- In this video Dutch painter Janhendrik Dolsma gives you 4 reasons to paint over a transparent wash:
1. It has a unifying effect
2. the possibility of applying highlights in the wet wash
3. the color of the wash sets the tone of the painting
4. colors blend in easily
Dolsma explains the process while working on his Evening Clouds painting.
Dolsma (1950) is an expert painter of clouds, beaches, dunes and of course the ocean. On his RUclips channel he shares a lifetime of painting experience in short tutorial videos with an emphasis on painting clouds. Janhendrik, thank you ever so much for sharing your talent, expertise, experience, knowledge and time doing these videos!!! You are truly an awesome artist!!!
Thank you so much, Clasina!

Isn't she gorgeous?
Thank you so much...especially "...if it's too early don't worry you'll have fun twice!" 💜💥💜👏👏👏🙏💜
My pleasure, Lori!
Thank you. You are a brilliant teacher. And true artist... 😊❤️
That's very kind, Kathy, thanks!
Why haven't I discovered you before? Gorgeous painting so realistic, I wanted to take my shoes off and walk through it. Thank you for uploading and for your patient tuition

One of the best 4 minutes on back-painting spent on youtube art tutes - thanks Jan
That's a great compliment, Andrew, thanks!
Did he just make photo realistic clouds appear with a rag?
Yep
I've been underpainting washes for a few years now, even in my murals. It's improved my work, I think. Well done and good insight!
I agree, underpainting wishes has great advantages. Thanks!
The video doesn't explain how to make underpaint wash. Is it like mixing brown paint with a lot of linseed oil, or the paint should be mixed turpentine or white spirit? I appreciat your reply.
@@williamflaherty3168 I use Liquin Light Gel (Winsor & Newton) as a medium. It's a fast drying medium that allows you to resume working on the same painting the next day. For my washes I use a mix of Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ocher and a lot of Liquin.
@@PaintingSkies1 great ! Thanks a lot!

Keep sharing please!
Thank you so much, Denise! Great to hear you have all my videos and that they have been helpful. I don't know when I'll be doing another full length video. Any tips on what it should be about?

Your videos are absolutely marvellous..so instructive, clear and you are easy to listen to...not too much going over and over the same thing endlessly...your painting fills in all the gaps and make it so easy to understand your techniques. The final result is wonderful!
That's great to hear, thank you!
I am in awe of your talent! What an absolute delight your painting and commentary. New sub
Good to hear you enjoyed the video. Thanks for subscribing!
I had to give up using oils when I moved to a small one bedroomed flat, so it is wonderful to watch someone using them with such skill. It is a great medium.
What a pity you had to give up oils. I hope you didn't give up painting...
@Painting Skies absolutely not. Acrylics, watercolour and printing now.
Paint in oil without solvent! Problem solved!
Too much talent Sir!
Thank you. Though I must say that putting in the hours is just as important as talent!
Love your paintings, and your calm voice, and your music
That's a great compliment, Chris, thank you.
@@PaintingSkies1 I fallow you on RUclips love your stuff I paint for a hobby, and I am having trouble with my clouds so I am watching your videos for techniques, I started out years ago with the Bob Ross wet on Wet technique, but still can’t seem to get my cloud to look realistic

I always have the same thought about starting the fun details and getting to do them again if I mess them up by doing them too early :)
Ah, that's funny, Eve! It's a lot better than loosing your temper over I, isn't it?
Gorgeous! Thanks for the hint.
You're welcome, Uriel!

Great tutorial and amazing work. Your technique is way beyond me, but I enjoyed having a taste of something so masterful. Thank you for sharing this.
Thanks, Wayne!
Thank you for sharing what has obviously taken years of study to perfect.
Thank you! I'm not an extremely talented painter, but I put in the hours. And that's equally important as talent.
Love your voice, paintings and story telling skills!
Great compliments, thanks!
Burnt Sienna is an amazing colour. It seems to go with any scene. It can be the sun in clouds, or mixed with blue, the shadows. It can be the colour of rust, or an old barn, or of a field of grain, or dead grasses poking out though snow, skin tones, rocks, sand...it seems endless.
I like how you let its warmth glow in the clouds here. Very nice!
Yes, Burnt Sienna is a very versatile color. Beside its use in an underpainting it works great in color mixes, when you need a bit of warmth.
Glad you like it, Mark!
favorite quote is at 5:40 "to be honest........." thank you for that!
My pleasure. It happens to all of us, doesn't it?
Sólo muchas gracias por mostrarnos tu bello arte, es una inspiración para poder intentar lograr lo que tu bien haces. Abrazo fuerte para ti. Maestrazo.😊😊😊

Pleased to hear the video is useful!
my connection went out on this one, i think a previous comment on money seems to be what affects communications for some. i dont have much but anyways, thanks for reccomend, im not an artist anymore but congrats and i wish you many successes
Thank you for your kind wishes, Christina, though I'm not sure which previous comments you're referring too. Stay safe and healthy.
Fine video and painting, your comment about continued adjustments throughout the process was most helpful and encouraging. How do you clean your stippler when you're done using it, Janhendrik?
Pleased to hear the video was helpful, Thomas.
I clean my stippler the same way I clean all my brushes. I did a short article about it on my blog: paintingcloudskies.blogspot.com/2016/09/cleaning-brushes.html.
What a master.
Thank you!
This is so so helpful and gave me so much inspiration to start painting again. You’re an incredible painter and your videos are great 😊

Thank you.

Wow you are an excellent painter!! Hope I'll be able to paint a beautiful sky like yours!!
Thank you! If you keep putting in the hours you'll get better. Talent is important, but there is still work to be done.
Good to know I'm not the only one who finger paints their oils lol.
No, you're not alone, Nathan. It's such a great tool, it's hard to understand why people are still surprised about it...
This is gorgeous. Thank you for sharing you expert talent.
Thank you, Kathleen, my pleasure.
I really enjoyed your explanation and watching you paint. At an early stage the picture looked really good. Than came the bright shocking blue. Eventually of course you arrived at your desired color values. This is inspiring. I have tried this technique on a picture long time ago. Tome to try it again.
Good to hear you enjoyed the video. It is a great approach indeed. Al the best when you try it again!
Yes, thank you so much! Such great technique and information, very beautiful painting.

Thank you for sharing such a wonderfull experience of your work.
Would like to know what brown color is and name of the medium.mixed. ❤❤❤
Thank you,! The brown color is a mixture of Burnt Sienna and Yellow Ocher. I dilute it with a lot of medium, Liquin Light Gel, a fast drying medium from Winsor & Newton.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and loving for painting! It is inspiring and encouraging for me to keep trying😊.
That's great, Thank you!
Absolument extraordinaire !!!!
Merci beaucoup!
Thank you so much for this video. I am self taught and this helps me immensely! I’m really curious as to how Klimt created those reflections in his water scenes!
My pleasure! To be honest, I have no idea how Klimt did it. If you want to find out how I did it, you could download my Painting Reflections video at www.paintngskies.com/video.
Awesome ... superb effect
