Great tutorial! I will add it to our tutorials page. At 23:05, all the clips on the video track moved when you dropped to the audio track because you have the "Ripple All Tracks" turned on - se the Timeline menu option or the (*) icon on the toolbar and the video track is not locked. This option is intended to keep things across tracks in sync as you make edits. It is off by default, but this trips up a lot of people. Also, be aware that the 32-bit version has been discontinued as that is too memory limited for today's world of HD and up video.
Thank you. I am creating family videos using Shotcut. You have got the best software. Being completely free helps a lot as I only creating 2-3 videos a year and they are not commercial. Thank you.
This was my FIRST time EVER attempting edits - I have been SO overwhelmed to begin learning - as SO many tutorials are not clear, concise, and novice friendly. I am SO thankful I came across yours and greatly appreciate your time, energy, thoughtfulness, and creativity in your tutorial video! After watching - I successfully edited my FIRST one and at my FIRST go around - This was a HUGE victory for me and am SO excited to learn more!!! THANK YOU, KEVIN!!!
Kevin, I may have found my video editor - thanks to you! I'm 82 and not keen to learn a lot of new tricks. I need to construct a short video of my model railway layout featuring different train movements through a busy railway junction. I think I'll be able to accomplish that with this app, and since it's for a single project, "free" is good!
If you are 82 then God bless you, if you are 17, then how do you know what mode trains are. Regardless. I’m 29 and it took me 4 hours to get to the point of feeling comfy with the program but it is free and effective. You got it
2 years later, I would just like to confirm that this tutorial is super helpful for beginners. Without this I never would have even tried to learn Shotcut
I have watched this Video again. You are a Billionaire in the making. You have added immense value to my life through your channel. Almighty God remember you big time.
Thank you Kevin, finally someone that understands how to teach and explain, who knows how to put himself in the mind of the observer, that can anticipate the understanding of the observer, that knows what level of understanding can and cannot be taken for granted. So many RUclips "tutorials" are absolutely worthless because of this disconnect.

Kevin, It is one thing to make a tutorial, but it's a totally different kettle of fish to be able to present everything in a clear, concise, and logical manner that makes it easy to follow. Very well done! Good voice-over too!
Excellent Shotcut tutorial for beginners! Great work, Kevin! I'll add one very important tip for future users. If your project is ever lagging a lot when editing there are two options under "settings" that take care of it. One is "preview scaling" which cuts down the lag that happens after adding filters and the other is "proxy" that makes lower resolution copies of your videos that are easier to edit with in case your original video files are also giving you lag. If you use both "preview scaling" and "proxy" at the same time it'll cut down on lag from all possible angles.
@@NomadFlow It worked great, there was no lag when editing, which was awesome. The only problem right now is adding text (because I'm trying to figure it out), but yeah it's worked great.
THANK YOU - I am a self-described technical dinosaur starting a RUclips channel. I chose the free editing software that I could find the best - for an absolute beginner - tutorial for and yours was so thorough that when I couldn't export it from my notebook and redid it on my desktop, I didn't even have to follow along the second time. I just did it. I really, really appreciate this information and will check for more of your videos. SO... now to make one using my own clips.

Great to hear Jim! Sometimes simple is better. Shotcut should be able to handle most editing needs and still has lots of advanced functionality. Davinci Resolve, Blender, Premiere, etc. are all fantastic apps but get complex pretty fast.
Coming from final cut pro,. I struggled with resolve for a while. But it really is very simply if you just avoid the fusion, color and audio page. I find I get on very well without them... Most of the time. Really resolve only becomes difficult when you need to chroma key or do advanced color grading. Don't give up on resolve. It will be worth it once you turn the corner. I can say that now but I felt exactly like you did for several months.

Just found Shotcut today. As a developer having to juggle many things at once plus being a noob in video editing, I like the clean and straightforward approach of the application, plus it's open-source. Thanks so much for this great walkthrough tutorial, it's highly informative, to the point and well-structured for covering the basics of getting started! ❤
I just want to say thank you so much for this helpful video. I have watched over a dozen videos trying to learn how to use shotcut as I'm NOT tech savy and all of the ones I watched just confused me. Your video is easy to follow and woohoo I was able to edit my video and it turned out! 😁
Thanks for your help Kevin, Openshot video editor was a complete "audio" bust for me, I couldn't get audio no matter how I tried, However, Shotcut has worked wonderfully on several machines, including my Laptop. This has been great because it's my weakest machine by far, but allows me to edit on the road. I should mention I love that it's also got a portable version. Thanks for the time you spent offering this information. For those wondering it's a windows 7 2.20 GHz laptop and it works great, for real.
Kevin. THANK YOU! I made a promo video with this perfectly! This was after following your other tutorials for a MS Movie Editor that is broken in Windows 10 Home, and another for Davinci Resolve that my computer lacked resources for. Hooh, it's been a challenge. Thank you for being so great!
Excellent tutorial. I followed it exactly and had a great outcome! Was having a bit of stumbles on adding text and lower 1/3rds. I will be wanting to add PNG frames and custom graphics and would like to know more about that.
Just the perfect balance between general overview and detail. When I came to exporting, I was amazed at all the options proposed by the current version 23, including AV1. There is a filter for LUTs, there is so much more, and all this for free, in the true spirit of Linux. Unless video editing is your bread earner, you do not need much more, but maybe even if you are a pro. In the true spirit of Linux, I also suggest you make a donation to keep the project going. The developers could easily be selling this stuff for hundreds of dollars or euros.
Great tutorial! Direct to the point and so simple to learn it step by step. The recommended video editing app is so easy to use plus equip with all the needed features. good job Kevin!
Omg I was telling to myself ''ok but didnt explain how to zoom'' and then you start explaining keyframes.. thank you so much, so clear and helpful informations!!
Kevin you are an awesome teacher. However, I’m looking for something simpler. I’ll never be a professional and just want to add some pizzazz to to some of my videos. I’m looking for something that can add text with ease and dress it up. There seems to be to many steps in which I want to do. Is Clipchamp the only option? I’m a novice at best. Is Mac the only option?
25:52 here is where he explains how to add text using shot cut... i'll admit, it seems like it could've been a bit simpler, but I think once you get the hang of it, it will be really easy! hope this helps :)
Hi Kevin. At your suggestion (from you RUclips review of 5 free Video Editors) I started with OpenShot as I have fairly simple needs (spiking up old family VHS tapes - no Cookie Company Commercial). I cut my teeth on OpenShot and was prepared to stick with it.... but it crashed all of the time (Windows 10 and all the right RAM and Processor). This is commonly talked about in the OpenShot community. It has been a year since they have release another version. Reluctantly I went back to your review video and decided to go up the line. I am going to give Shotcut a try next, but OMG, after working in OpenShot I an thrilled to see how much easier this is going to be to just working with the basics. I saw everything I need in you excellent tutorial. If this app does not crash (ala 1990 software days where you had to SAVE all of the time), then I am home. Thanks for your work. I watch you in other productions too.
Great, Kevin. So refreshing to see a scripted tutorial that keeps up the pace, rather than the rambling unscripted tutorials some (well-meaning) folks create.
It's 2 AM, I have a video that I need to submit by 8 AM that I have not started editing, to be clear, and I finally finished making this 32nd cookie commercial, THIS TOOK ME ONE HOUR, and I was planning on making a five minute video. This video is something I need to pass my class, so yeah I think I'm going insane. But the video was very helpful.
Thank you!!! I needed to be able to edit interview video in short time and your instruction was very clear, nice and easy! I got it done within 1hr! Thank you!!!
Great job! I've been struggling to use Shotcut intuitively for ages and of course didn't get very much progress! Your video is a life saver and thanks for posting it.
Wow. So perfectly explained. I have deleted adobe AE,because it was unnecessarily complex for making simple edits and decided to move to this program. Looks muuuuch easier to use and learn.
Shotcut worked great for me and my HP Notebook with Intel HP Graphics 520. Thanks for the videos. I will refer to this many times while making a keynote book.

Man. Every single video of yours I've encountered is just so friggin' useful. I'm trying to do some collaborative work and my usual software isn't going to cut it (I think)... but a trusted source said she used Shotcut in the gaming industry (mandated for security reasons) so I'm checking it out. You gave me all the info I needed (ripple edits, effects, navigation, renders, etc) and I truly appreciate it! Thank you, Kevin!!!

Thank you so much for the information and for truly walking step by step. When watching other RUclipsrs explain it's normally very rushed and not as detailed. One of the best tutorials I ever watched! Not only is it easy to follow, it gave me a great overview of keyframes! Thank you, Joe!
The best tutorial I ever followed through. Just, perfect. Comment and share people, that's rarity to see such thing.
Thank you Kevin. I Just downloaded the Shotcut yesterday and I am now ready to play it around. Thanks again for this great tutorial.
i'm watching this in my ICT class :D
Thank you so much.... One of the best tutorials ever
Great, Kevin. So refreshing to see a scripted tutorial that keeps up the pace, rather than the rambling unscripted tutorials some (well-meaning) folks create.
Yes you've released this video 4 years ago, but what a real good explanation! Well done and thank you!
Another of your outstanding videos: clear, complete, and concise. Thanks.
This was my first time editing on this shortcut software . Honestly this was soo helpful and I understood every detail of it. Thanks alot.
Thank you very much my brother for sharing this important Information 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏♥️♥️♥️
Those days where when it was just for tutorials but now it's official, and I can't wait to get my first cookie!
You are soo good at making tutorials. You are one of my favourite youtubers.
A great introduction to using Shotcut. Much appreciated. Thank you.
This guy is a complete Rockstar, what an awesome tutorial......
You are EXCELLENT at creating tutorials... thank you for this!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. It helped me a lot to go from just converting my videos to actually editing them!
This was absolutely the most helpful thing I've watched regarding how to videos. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Keep up this awesome work, it is very much appreciated.
You are an outstanding content creator/teacher. Thank you.
Thank you so much. I have been desperately looking for a proper tutorial video and i found one.
Best Shotcut video I've seen so far! Learned a lot, awesome video!
You totally rock! I downloaded all your pics and made the commercial with you. Thank you! I'm really looking forward to editing my first video with this software.
Kevin, your tutorials is awesome. easy and quick to understand and implement. Well done and keep on doing the good work.
Salamat Kaayo Kevin, Daghan ko natun-ab sa imong mga editing videos.
Excellent Tutorial Kevin!!! Just downloaded Shotcut, and this is the best tutorial video I have found. Incredibly helpful, well done!
Brilliant. What a clear and concise tutorial. Thanks so much.
Thanks Kevin for a great tutorial. IT have downloaded this onto my work laptop as I need to create short video's for staff to learn how to use our bi-spoke database system. You covered everything I will need to create my videos and you did it in a very easy, clear, concise way that was just brilliant for me, thank you :)
Thank you so much for the information and for truly walking step by step. When watching other RUclipsrs explain it's normally very rushed and not as detailed. I took notes and drew the symbols so I can look back and follow if I get confused and not waste time editing. I really appreciate this video.
Thanks for the note Palal!
