I remeber 3 years ago i saw this, and it was the first time I saw a sweep picking video or even found out what that was. I thought this was the coolest guy in the world lol. It's cool to stumble upon this again and actually understanding. I can sweep pick now yay lol
Dude, not only do you explain things very well, your tone is killer and your vibrato is sick! I am trying to ween myself off of the ol' whammy bar and just vibrato with my fingers. I grew so dependent on the bar, I lost all my finger strength. Your technique is my ultimate goal. Thanks for the post.
thanks for this howie. i told myself i was going to add sweeps to my arsonal, and this was the first video/tutorial i found. it took about three months for me, but i can finally pull these when our band practices.
@Guitarbaa Whenever you change directions in sweep picking, pick in the direction your changing to. So like you said on a sweep from the first to second to third back to second string, You'd pick up on the first, up on the second, down on the third, down on the second then up on the first.
@BuriedAlive7x If you're talking about tuning or just the note Eb in general, it's a half step down from E. Which means if you're using a chromatic tuner, instead of E, it should D#. So if you're wanting to know how to tune to the tuning that Howie's in, starting from the thinnest string, Eb Bb Gb Db Ab Eb, or D# A# F# C# G# D#. Hope that helped your question.lol
Its an actual 1972 Strat loaded with Dimarzio Virtual Solo pickups. Actually, when this video was filmed, the pickups were called Virtual Vintage Solo and were a tiny bit different than the newer version.
He is a real professor about Sweep :) This is an Useful lesson for Sweep lovers, His guitar is tuned on D#, So If You are going to sound the same go one fret back If watching or half tone if hearing wich is the same issue
of all my years finding the how to sweep... this is the only one that fucken taught me how to sweep.... everyone thumbs up if this was the clip that gave you that foundation // outline...
Brutal! You are very articulate when explaining how things work. Easy to understand and a great practice session. Nice worn in axe too! Looks like its an old friend who has been with you from the git go
I've been practicing this technique for about...I'd say maybe 4 months now and I'm just now starting to get it. patience is the key and start slowly on it. "Before you can run you have to walk." Michael Angelo Batio.
@jakemk21 what i do when im practicing it is tie a shirt or some cloth over the lower frets to stop the ringing. but you will slowly get cleaner with practice
Howie, thanks for making this video available :) I have been trying to figure out how to do this, and this is very helpful! You're an awesome guitarist!
Thanks for the lesson man; it took me like a year and a half to get it right but I finally made it. I feel more proud of myself with my humble sweep picking than when I got that stupid master in something.
@zebi62mr also try to do it without distortion on because you'll get this annoying ringing if you have alot of gain on. when you have it down and ready to shred time to do it with lots of distortion and try to mute each note with your palm and you'll get a wicked clean sounding arpeggio
@megaluisdeth - Actually, Hammett used a similar lick in Creeping Death but it is without the hammered G string 12th fret note at the bottom, and the top note stays on the 17th fret of the high E string the whole time. The bad part though, is that the chord underneath Hammet at the time he is playing it is an E (not an A), so it actually sounds terrible where he does it.
Nothing I can find wrong with this lesson. FAR clearer than other lessons on da tube and gives a reasonable starting arpeggio (or whatever you call it)
@TheJayman213 If the tone is only off on the notes above the 11th fret (12th fret and up) it means your intonation is off and you need to adjust your bridge. or you may need a neck adjustment. However, you should replace your strings at least every couple of months. I replace mine once a month.
@TIT22 Because you need to start at 20bpm quarter notes ( 1 note per 1 metronome click) , start off with only hammering your fingers on the right notes SLOWLY after 10 minutes of that, do the same by picking for 10 minutes, then increase metronome speed by 1-2 bpm so your developing your muscle memory, NEVER GO FAST IF YOU CANNOT DO IT CLEARLY
@karmazon it gives you much better control , it helps you to make smaller economical movements and hitting the strings at the same angle everytime plus ti helps you mute better the strings with the rest of the hand.If you hold it with the very tip or your index your hand ll float more away from the strings.Actually both work but i find myself being more relaxed and not tensed at all using this method.
I liked how you said not to play the notes to close together otherwise it will sound like a chord. I also liked you saying to lift the fingers quickly.
thanks a lot man ! This is exactly what i was searching for,now i can watch tutorials about it.Before i was searching like "how to make guitar scream" and strange results were coming ... now i got it,thanks :D
@whatthedom start doing stretch fingering exercises. It will help you break out of "the box." I couldnt do it at all but now im very comfortable with it.
@metallica4ever2010 - It's not made to look old...it IS old! It is an actual 1972 Strat that was refretted around 1992. When it was refretted, the tech stripped a lot of the finish off the neck and didn't put a whole lot back on when the new frets went in. Over the years, the natural oils from skin on the hands darkened the parts of the neck with the smallest amount of finish.
@BreakingGlass77 It is clean, that's just what the neck looks like when the lacquer wears off, a true sign that the guitar has been played long and hard.
That is sooooooooooooooooo amazing!!! You are so talented!!! I would love to learn to play the guitar :) I'll keep an eye out for more of your videos :)
nice lesson and why you have those pickups so down to the body ,i know it makes a warmer dark tone that's make it loggic i think strat's has brighter sound.
@sinceibeenlovingyou ya i think he forgot to put it back to standard. this is in Eb but he keeps refering to notes as if they were in standard tuning. just tune to e flat or pay close attention and move everything down one fret, and you will be fine
@NamelessThe I'm not sure if this will work well with this pattern, but for some other patterns i use, i find that if i mute the string i just played a note on with my right hand it mutes it quite nicely. But after you get the pattern down there isn't too much need for it.
if it helps its called a pinch harmonic and takes a little bit of practice to get right. just as you pluck, glance the string with the side of ur thumb.
Hey man great lesson, can i ask you a question? When im doing a 3 string sweep, when i get to the High E i pick it 2 times, right? Im asking you this because i cant really understand english.
I hate sweep picking - when I started learning it I started to sound like 'someone else' so I gave it up - but this is one hell of a cool video. Nice, clear, and a great little guitar as well. Thumbs up!
12 years ago I watched this video. I still dream of having a Fender like this.
I remeber 3 years ago i saw this, and it was the first time I saw a sweep picking video or even found out what that was. I thought this was the coolest guy in the world lol. It's cool to stumble upon this again and actually understanding. I can sweep pick now yay lol
lol same for me :D
+marco escalante (enlo) omg extactly the same for mee too :)
marco escalante exactly the same for me man haha
Well i goint to say something similar..that was the first sweep pinking video that i ve seen,,was 7 years ago!!thanks Howie Simon, god bless you!!
marco escalante can i ask a question here
Thanks for the lesson Howie I'll see you in about 10 years when I'm able to do this.
UcanThnkItuCanDoit you have to be halfway there by now. good luck my nigga lmaooo
Yeah halfway there now. You can do it.
@@beardlesshermit I am probably no closer to sweep picking but I am a much better player overall :) And wrote many songs.
@@miracade3911 Lol.
Already sweeping?
Very well explained and demonstrated. Excellent job keeping it clean, especially with a distorted setting.
such beautiful strat ^^
Dude, not only do you explain things very well, your tone is killer and your vibrato is sick! I am trying to ween myself off of the ol' whammy bar and just vibrato with my fingers. oh I am here in this video again, this video folks, is where i learned how to sweep pick way back in 2008. thank you so much
I'm learning now haha
super memoriessss /: i was so young xD
Fantastic lesson Howie, and very generous of you to share this, thanks.
Best lesson on this I’ve seen on this but ai Still can’t do it. at least I can see how you execute the techniques… great job slowing it down!
Dude You Are Phenomenal!!!!!
thanks for this howie. i told myself i was going to add sweeps to my arsonal, and this was the first video/tutorial i found. it took about three months for me, but i can finally pull these when our band practices.
its freeking hard
Um... define hard? Please?
***** Not easy,requires hard work.Red Tube.
I'm actually more of an old hybrid country picker, but am intrigued by what you've shown. Thanks for the great lesson.
@Guitarbaa Whenever you change directions in sweep picking, pick in the direction your changing to. So like you said on a sweep from the first to second to third back to second string, You'd pick up on the first, up on the second, down on the third, down on the second then up on the first.
Wow friend. Really a great sounds. I love it. 🙂 💫 👍 Rock on! 🎸
@BuriedAlive7x

Didnt think I could do it I practiced the fingering on acoustic first w out sweeping for hours then was shredding it in no time. Thanks for the lesson
That's probably an excellent idea. I think I will try that.
Its an actual 1972 Strat loaded with Dimarzio Virtual Solo pickups. Actually, when this video was filmed, the pickups were called Virtual Vintage Solo and were a tiny bit different than the newer version.

I take it for me to playlist learn electric guitar 🎸. Thanks friend for sharing. 🙂
Brutal! You are very articulate when explaining how things work. Easy to understand and a great practice session. Nice worn in axe too! Looks like its an old friend who has been with you from the git go

16 year old Howie! Yes!!!!!
any body know the distortion pedal he's usin with that?
Great lesson, you have a great teaching style. Thanks for posting this.
Finally someone that SHOULD be showing people this shit! Awesomely smooth and clean.
very impressive.........good sound as well mr. Simon........great job. like it.
@demonrule he's getting the 17th fret on the upstroke. it's part of the arpeggio
@jakemk21 what i do when im practicing it is tie a shirt or some cloth over the lower frets to stop the ringing. but you will slowly get cleaner with practice
your guitar lives...its beautiful to see it :')
Howie, thanks for making this video available :) I have been trying to figure out how to do this, and this is very helpful! You're an awesome guitarist!
This is the best lessons that i see in all you tube
Myself also played guitar. I've been up the video to RUclips. But I was surprised to your great guitar playing. You look amazing.
Howie is great! I'm a "slowhand", but this kind of playin' I always wanted to learn, maybe now I will get more success with this lesson! :)
@SilenceAllTheWicked sounds awesome...I love the fender tone
killer player one of the best
Thanks for the lesson man; it took me like a year and a half to get it right but I finally made it. I feel more proud of myself with my humble sweep picking than when I got that stupid master in something.

fukkin badass. Taught with clarity, and with enthusiasm. couldn't ask for more
this is my first time trying sweeps, didn't take too long this is cool.
One of the best explanations I have seen yet, been struggling with this for years, keep giving up, but with this, hopefully I get it now... lmao
@megaluisdeth - Actually, Hammett used a similar lick in Creeping Death but it is without the hammered G string 12th fret note at the bottom, and the top note stays on the 17th fret of the high E string the whole time. Nothing I can find wrong with this lesson. FAR clearer than other lessons on da tube and gives a reasonable starting arpeggio (or whatever you call it)
@TopJimmyWinn it lowers the string tension (easier to play) and gives the guitar a surprisingly different sounds. Try it for yourself and find out.
I think the blue is cool! My vid has some cool sweep picking but after watching this, i have learnt something!
@TheJayman213 If the tone is only off on the notes above the 11th fret (12th fret and up) it means your intonation is off and you need to adjust your bridge. or you may need a neck adjustment. However, you should replace your strings at least every couple of months. I replace mine once a month.

@2256635 its an old Strat so after years of playing the neck tends to be a bit dirty,or it lacks of CLEANING
Nice job man, on the playing AND the teaching! Thanks.
@DrNowhereman90 The rhythm is the song of storms, yes. But, if you listen close, theyre there the song of time's notes.
Excellent break down of sweeping!
hi!I'm learning sweep picking!Your sound is perfect for arpeggios! What are you using with the distortion?Reverb, chorus, etc??Thank you!!you're great!!
Man, do I love the sound of strat neck pickups!
Nice lesson, all the way around. Love it all.
I liked how you said not to play the notes to close together otherwise it will sound like a chord. I also liked you saying to lift the fingers quickly.
@Strifedragondude
Place your palm above the string slightly (Picking Hand), and strum. To get that crunchy sound used in most metal.
That fretboard is gorgeous!
Great tutorial dude! Clear, and very easy to follow explanation.
i love tunning down a half. it makes my strings feel more soft and easy.
Try a full a-minor sweep starting from 12. fret a string with this 3 variations on the first 3 strings thou, it's good fingerpain.
thanks for this bro, never got any friends of mine to teach me sweeping, i'll be sure to practise alot. Thanks dude
Loved this lesson. Right to the point
@TheElderScrollsGER - What's the rush? Take your time and get it down clean (Go slow at 1st). You'll get it faster than you think.
thanks a lot man ! This is exactly what i was searching for,now i can watch tutorials about it.Before i was searching like "how to make guitar scream" and strange results were coming ... now i got it,thanks :D

@Jay93Cee Thank you. I have to admit, that sounds like a weird method, but as long as it works, its good. I will definetely try it.
@blackzabbathfan - No it is not a "road worn". It is an ACTUAL 1972 Strat.
best lesson ever!!! i going to try this first, then go for bat country, then go for some escape the fate!!!! ROCK ON!!!!
you've got a perfect strat. i loved that guitar
nice lesson and why you have those pickups so down to the body ,i know it makes a warmer dark tone that's make it loggic i think strat's has brighter sound.
@sinceibeenlovingyou ya i think he forgot to put it back to standard. this is in Eb but he keeps refering to notes as if they were in standard tuning. just tune to e flat or pay close attention and move everything down one fret, and you will be fine

Helped alot, I have the same guitar in black to
awesome video i actually can now sweep pick good now. thanks for the good help.
I'm glad to know which pickups this guitar use?
@wordupkevin well... i agree with what you said until a point...
even if some BC rich guitars are crappy
they have some awesome guitars
if it helps its called a pinch harmonic and takes a little bit of practice to get right. just as you pluck, glance the string with the side of ur thumb.
GREAT LESSON! trying to teach myself sweep picking brought up a buncha wrong results prior to this.
I love that strat so much!
PS Awesome lesson, best one I've found.
Hey man great lesson, can i ask you a question? When im doing a 3 string sweep, when i get to the High E i pick it 2 times, right? Im asking you this because i cant really understand english.
@demonrule you might want to check that again. cause he's playing the arpeggio right
I hate sweep picking - when I started learning it I started to sound like 'someone else' so I gave it up - but this is one hell of a cool video. Nice, clear, and a great little guitar as well. Thumbs up!
ok two words... YOU RULE. O and thanks for posting this now that i know how to sweep pick im going to practice and practice THANK YOU SO MUCH
holy shits this guy makes it look so easy ugh
Amazing tone in a strat!
really nice strat, what is it? nice lesson too
is your fretboard meant to be like that? i personally think it looks pretty cool how did u get it like that?
wow, time flies... I was practicing this for 5 hours straight and just stopped now. My arms feel like hell.
@stevierayseanvanalle : It's a 1972 Strat that has been refinished.
Thanks for the response KillerMcGinity!! That neck is exactly what I want.
Good clear instruction. Bravo!
awesome lesson....and i love that strat!!
what is your setup?!?!?! it sounds amazing!
@wavy29 Nope, when you descend the arpeggio it'll cause noise. Plus it reduces your agility.
nice guitar i like the worn look. nice strat. good sweep picking lesson
