  • 09/18/2020 was the first start of this Lycoming TIO-580-X in the Lancair Super Legacy project I've been working on for a long time. This is a highly modified engine and airframe which will be racing in the National Championship Air Races in Reno Nevada.

I’ve never seen a gap (spacer)/distance from the engine to the prop like that before.
Is that to fit a more aerodynamic cowl on it.
Is that normal for this ac? Does one lose a smidge of power because of it?
I remember learning that for every 1 metre of drive shaft represented 10hp loss in power to the wheels. I wonder if this is similar for aircraft.
Best of luck to you, mate. Can’t wait to see the grin on your face and the envy of others when you fly her for the first time.

The primary reason for the long hub is to reduce propeller to cowl interference. The less stuff behind the blade means more thrust. Of course the secondary result is a more pointy cowl which is good too.
There are no power losses I'm aware of. The load to the crankshaft is constant for the most part.
This is not normal for a Lancair Legacy. This airplane is highly modified.
      Thanks for the compliments!
