I just got off the phone with Toby Fox and he told me chapter 3 got released two years ago but it's on a single PC at the bottom of the atlantic ocean.
oh don't bother looking for it, I already found it and played it. unfortunately the computer broke down and the hard drive corrupted precisely when I finished the chapter so I couldn't upload it. I also suffer from a rare form of memory loss that only affected my memory from the moment I booted up the game to the moment I finished it. sorry guys.
yes, Toby confirmed that the game_change feature makes development MUCH easier, because if they didn't have this, every single time a new chapter would release they would have to extensively playtest the whole entire game (all chapters, all routes, different ways of playing, etc) all over again to make sure nothing from earlier chapters got messed up, so this makes at least the bug testing phase of development a trillion times quicker Edit: oh and also it allows the game to generally load faster where as if they didn't have this feature, loading each chapter might have became slower and slower as more released
@@lbsc1201 Isn't what op meant that when they want to add a new chapter, they have to update the entire game, but with the game_change feature they can add a new project separate from the other ones? Isn't creating a separate game for each chapter a good thing??? Otherwise the alternative would be to write code such that the game knows which rooms are part of chapter 1 and which rooms are part of chapter 2 which is worse design. idk I'm not familiar with game maker studio.

Considering it took eighteen months to go from "we are about to start localising Chapter 3" to "we are nearly finished localising Chapter 3", I am not optimistic.
Remember that chapter 4 has already finished the first step of localisation, they’re just checking the translations. In addition, they’ve said chapter 4 is easier to localise.
@@lbsc1201 didn’t he say in the ju31st newsletter than getting the Japanese script in the game had already finished. That means they’re just going through the game to check the alignment and translation on each text. Either way I don’t think it’ll take anywhere close to 18 months

i feel like toby is pulling a robtop here. i'm seeing a lot of parallels between how deltarune chapters 3 and 4 are looking and the lead up to the release of GD 2.2. the main community-facing person gives semi-frequent updates about bits of progress, more and more of the community, starved for content, leaves until it's out, the youtubers go more and more crazy with less and less to cover, making videos promising "it's going to come out in the next few months!" for years on end before it seems the dev(s) are finishing up and eventually release the long awaited update on some random day
I mean... Deltarune as a project will span, as far as we know, 7 chapters; Chapter 1 Came 3 Years after Undertale, Chapter 2 came 3 years after 1 and now Chapters 3 & 4 will come at most 4 years after 2, between that we've gotten pretty clear updates on where development has been and whatever hangups there may be in regularized newsletters from Toby being ingured to problems with the Game Engine. Toby has said the new chapters are feature complete and under testing now. Robtop stretched the development of an update that should've taken 6 months to 7 _ongoing_ years and he still isnt done with the update since 2.21 is still nowhere in sight after approaching a year since 2.2's release. During the hiätus the community was basically drip fed updates through random discord posts he'd decide to share about whatever extra^extra feature he felt like adding onto the mounting pile of scope creaping code that day. Yeah the youtubers have kind of gone mad in a similar way but as far as I know there aren't any Xcreatorgoal type youtubers posting every other day about Toby's morning breath or whatever so I'd say it's not that bad. At least Toby didnt announce the release month on the 9 year anniversary only to then go dark and push it back twice after bugs come out. It also helps to hire a team

Hello, today in this seven hour video essay I will disecting the moral ramifications of 'Friend Inside Me', and the effect it has on Deltarune's lore. This video has 12 sponsors and 50 midroll ads.
Ngl, I think it’s later December, perhaps even around a certain “December Holiday”. We did see Noelle in a dark room filled with Christmas decorations after all, and I’m convinced that it’ll be the location of a dark world with an ice palace maze that can only be navigated with a party member who knows the way. And, considering Noelle is holding a flashlight, a tool for finding your way in the dark, I suspect she’ll be that party member, and by avoiding her joining the party, we can access a secret door to enter, and the key for it probably exists somewhere outside that dark world, going by the Spamton Sweepstakes blog posts anyway. I also don’t think most of the reasons mentioned at 5:54 hold as much weight as you think. The game_change testing should basically be done, that was the whole point of doing the chapter 1 and 2 rerelease that’s basically done, and the function has existed for well over a year before it was added to the LTS release of gamemaker, QA testing won’t take that long because they don’t test games extremely thoroughly, just for major crashes and breaks, then do bug fixes. No QA team can ever catch as many bugs as will be discovered on day 1 of release. This goes for both chapters, I give the QA testing at most 1 week per platform, and all the console versions will probably be tested at the same time, meaning it’s 1 week total for them. Chapter 4 probably already has significant progress on its localization, as I highly doubt the localization team does one sentence at a time strictly in order from start to finish. It’s far more likely that there are several people on completely different parts of the scripts, just prioritizing chapter 3 so they could start testing while chapter 4 was being finished up. Considering they’re essentially done chapter 3 localization, it’s likely meant that some of the team that was working on it has already moved on to starting chapter 4 while the last few lines were finished on 3, so I’d be willing to bet that Chapter 4 is over a third done. Console ports won’t take that long. GameMaker already supports console ports, Toby has had to do them before so he should already know some of the process, and the longest parts of doing it are ensuring the game meets FPS requirements for the consoles and has controller button mappings, and controller mappings will only take a day if I’m being generous. As for the FPS requirements, Toby has been testing to ensure the chapters would meet them since he started Chapter 3, when he mentioned a room with several thousand tree objects lagging it. He was likely trying to test the extent of objects he could have before dipping below the threshold he needed, so performance has been taken into account for a while, and all other testing will be checked during the week or two max of console QA, which again, they’d have different teams dedicated to doing it on each console at the same time almost certainly. Finally, the store page and release material is easy. They probably already have screenshots and store page drafts picked out, it’s not like the game isn’t already playable to get that stuff. Keep in mind too, Deltarune is releasing as ONE game. It’s not like Bendy and the Ink Machine or Poppy Playtime where he has to make a new set of advertising and trailers and store pages for each chapter, and in fact he DOESN’T want to spoil us on the new chapters, just give teasers. More than likely, 80% or more will consist of chapters 1 and 2 only, and we can’t forget the infamous Undertale vent puzzle clip, the annoying dogs everywhere, and the intro and outro of the trailer, altogether meaning the trailer will probably only be 10-15% new footage, so 5-10 seconds if I’m being generous. The Steam page is going to be a general overview of the game, NOT all about the two new chapters, so the time for new marketing material is practically negligible, again especially if you consider that they already almost certainly have screenshots and clips from all over the game to use. Considering late December is 2 months away, and they made as much progress as they have in 1-2 month increments already, I can absolutely see it. Bug fixing after QA could push it to the first two weeks of January at the latest if I had to guess.
Given what you said, I can still see it being mid-February to early-March as the localization team probably has other projects than deltarune, plus we don't really know if ch4 QA testing could encourage the team to actually change something gameplay wise
@ Yeah, a lot of it was definitely a bit off, but tbh I do think that Toby has been concealing JUST how much progress was actually already done on each section, probably to make it a little less clear exactly when the chapters would be ready to release so that people don’t get hyped up and then disappointed by what feels like a broken promise. By blurring the progress on each section a bit he was able to manage the responses to it a bit, meaning if it was ready early, it releases early, otherwise gets pushed back, and nobody would know the difference either way. This is also why I believe he never specified when in 2025 it was coming out. He probably WANTED to say early 2025, like first 2 or 3 months, but without knowing what issues could arise by then, he decided to keep it vague. Given that he has still stuck to this weirdly vague way of announcing it even after New Years when he posted on BlueSky, I’m guessing he’s still abiding by that blur approach. So as long as nothing goes wrong, I definitely agree that February or March is about as late as I could see it coming out.

I know its gonna be soon because suddenly my interest in deltarune has come back xD if it comes in 2025 ill have time to replay & refresh my memory on all the lore mysteries, along with making a ready save file on my new computer lol, i always seem to start paying attention right on time (tho it could be that its simply been 2 years again and my internal clock somehow knows this lul)
If I remember correctly u don't need to do all endings in Undertale, You just need to finish the True Pacifist Route + Dodging all Credits, Also Toby said Deltarune is gonna have only 1 ending, But we will probably still get to choose how the story progresses just like in Chapter 2 where we got to play the game normally or do the so called SnowGrave Route which changed the boss fight at the end and hoe the chapter actually plays out.
I doubt this is going to happen, but one thing I think could happen after chapter 7 comes out are Deltarune episodes, little mini chapters like 10 to 15 minutes, like the animations from spriter Mike and people like that
IMO, 2028, and even 2027, are more likely than 2029 for a chapter 7 release. Hear me out: After chapter 2's release, Toby said they were focusing on developing simultaneously chapters 3, 4 and 5, even if mostly on chapters 3 and 4. In december, they were still focusing on these three chapters. Then, in March 2023, Toby said they were focusing on completing chapter 3. 31st of October, chapter 3 was entirely finished, localization and porting aside. That's 8 months of focusing on chapter 3, 9-10 months if they started focusing only on chapter 3 before March. Assuming they started fully focusing on completing chapter 4 starting from November, it means it took them 9-10 months to complete it, since we know they finished it during August or early September. If completing chapter 5 takes as long as this, it means it would be finished near June 2025 (September 2024 from June 2025 = 10 months). When we consider that, it could release in late 2025/early 2026 if it releases separately from chapters 6 and 7, depending on how long its localization, porting and playtesting take. Chapter 5 being finished mid-2025 means they would only have 2 chapters left to do at this point. Now, we don't know how far the work is done for those, but I can see them being done in 2-3 years, considering they made three whole chapters in 4 years (don't forget chapter 2's development only started in 2020), and that even Toby himself said next chapters won't take as long. tldr; they made three chapters in 4 years, so I can see them making three more chapters (including chapter 5 which already started a while ago) in another 3-4 years, and therefore releasing chapter 7's release in 2027 or 2028
I have to agree that an extra chapter after 7 seems really unlikely unless it's a small epilogue or prologue chapter, everyone expects a conclusion at Chapter 7, and finding out you have to wait at least a year or two for the conclusipn would sting. I also don't think that the way he's treating development news really allows for secret big content, Chapter 8 would come out probably over a decade after Chapter 1, and I think he would think 7 Chapters of story is a good stopping point.
I always assumed that Toby's goal was for a release of Chapters 3&4 to be around Christmas (December Holiday) which would place the release near the end of December. I think that QA and testing could take just the month of November and things could have worked out. BUT the pushbacks by game-maker on releasing the patch have been stymieing to say the least. I think a pushback is inevitable. My next guess is then not in January, but February. Why? I think Deltarune coming out near/around holidays is fun and I would by very much into a Valentines release. RIP a Toby Fox project every 3 years though.
Regarding your cliffhanger bit. I know it's probably not going to happen, but i was really hoping that when chapters 3 and 4 finally come out, Toby will make it, so for the first month or so, only chapter 3 is available to play, with chapter 4 unlocking later, so people would have some time to process everything that happened in chapter 3, make the cliffhanger at the end of it (if we get one) work better, and to make ch 3 feel overall more separate just like chapters 1 and 2. If we get chapters 3 and 4 together at the same time, i don't think people will appreciate both of them as much separately.

My predictions are 2025 June-September I do hope chapter 7 releases on Deltarune’s 10th anniversary since that’d be really cool to see how far the game has come I think you guesses are pretty accurate and I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re right

technically the only thing explicitly saying there's 7 chapters is the chapter select menu (which he could easily add a scroll bar to), he could come out with chapters 7 + 8
my personal theory is that it would release in september 2025 (specifically undertales ten year anniversary) but taking your estimation into account, i wouldnt put it past toby to release it on april 1st
game_change should make loading the game faster, as it only loads the chosen chapter, also the code is less messy instead of all of it being connected and stuff.

Where are you getting this from that they already developed the new chapters using the new feature ? Work on at least chpt 3 started at least 3 years ago and there was no mention of the feature so as far as i can tell it seems like a feature they either asked for and game maker recently has been able to make it or its a feature that game maker itself came up with and toby and the team wants to take advantage of it. If the work was already done with the new feature why would they need to test it ? That would assume that if it doesnt work in testing it would delay the game even more and thats just not how developing a game works. You dont just build your entire game on an experimental feature you havent been able to test
this is going to sound really harsh, but I think Toby needs to realise that his fanbase is like… growing up. I was in high school when deltarune released, now I’m almost done with an a university degree. His fanbase aren’t going to stay permanently excited 16 year olds forever, and if it’s going to be 7 years between chapters 1 and 3 (not even halfway through the whole game) he must know that a lot of his fanbase are just going to… fade away.

of course this is because deltarune's code is a mess and game maker is not a great engine

This goes for both chapters, I give the QA testing at most 1 week per platform, and all the console versions will probably be tested at the same time, meaning it’s 1 week total for them.
Chapter 4 probably already has significant progress on its localization, as I highly doubt the localization team does one sentence at a time strictly in order from start to finish. It’s far more likely that there are several people on completely different parts of the scripts, just prioritizing chapter 3 so they could start testing while chapter 4 was being finished up. Considering they’re essentially done chapter 3 localization, it’s likely meant that some of the team that was working on it has already moved on to starting chapter 4 while the last few lines were finished on 3, so I’d be willing to bet that Chapter 4 is over a third done.
Console ports won’t take that long. GameMaker already supports console ports, Toby has had to do them before so he should already know some of the process, and the longest parts of doing it are ensuring the game meets FPS requirements for the consoles and has controller button mappings, and controller mappings will only take a day if I’m being generous. As for the FPS requirements, Toby has been testing to ensure the chapters would meet them since he started Chapter 3, when he mentioned a room with several thousand tree objects lagging it. He was likely trying to test the extent of objects he could have before dipping below the threshold he needed, so performance has been taken into account for a while, and all other testing will be checked during the week or two max of console QA, which again, they’d have different teams dedicated to doing it on each console at the same time almost certainly.
Finally, the store page and release material is easy. They probably already have screenshots and store page drafts picked out, it’s not like the game isn’t already playable to get that stuff. Keep in mind too, Deltarune is releasing as ONE game. It’s not like Bendy and the Ink Machine or Poppy Playtime where he has to make a new set of advertising and trailers and store pages for each chapter, and in fact he DOESN’T want to spoil us on the new chapters, just give teasers. More than likely, 80% or more will consist of chapters 1 and 2 only, and we can’t forget the infamous Undertale vent puzzle clip, the annoying dogs everywhere, and the intro and outro of the trailer, altogether meaning the trailer will probably only be 10-15% new footage, so 5-10 seconds if I’m being generous. The Steam page is going to be a general overview of the game, NOT all about the two new chapters, so the time for new marketing material is practically negligible, again especially if you consider that they already almost certainly have screenshots and clips from all over the game to use.
Considering late December is 2 months away, and they made as much progress as they have in 1-2 month increments already, I can absolutely see it. Bug fixing after QA could push it to the first two weeks of January at the latest if I had to guess.
Given what you said, I can still see it being mid-February to early-March as the localization team probably has other projects than deltarune, plus we don't really know if ch4 QA testing could encourage the team to actually change something gameplay wise
@ Yeah, a lot of it was definitely a bit off, but tbh I do think that Toby has been concealing JUST how much progress was actually already done on each section, probably to make it a little less clear exactly when the chapters would be ready to release so that people don’t get hyped up and then disappointed by what feels like a broken promise. By blurring the progress on each section a bit he was able to manage the responses to it a bit, meaning if it was ready early, it releases early, otherwise gets pushed back, and nobody would know the difference either way.
This is also why I believe he never specified when in 2025 it was coming out. He probably WANTED to say early 2025, like first 2 or 3 months, but without knowing what issues could arise by then, he decided to keep it vague. Given that he has still stuck to this weirdly vague way of announcing it even after New Years when he posted on BlueSky, I’m guessing he’s still abiding by that blur approach. So as long as nothing goes wrong, I definitely agree that February or March is about as late as I could see it coming out.

If I remember correctly u don't need to do all endings in Undertale, You just need to finish the True Pacifist Route + Dodging all Credits, Also Toby said Deltarune is gonna have only 1 ending, But we will probably still get to choose how the story progresses just like in Chapter 2 where we got to play the game normally or do the so called SnowGrave Route which changed the boss fight at the end and hoe the chapter actually plays out.

IMO, 2028, and even 2027, are more likely than 2029 for a chapter 7 release. Hear me out:
After chapter 2's release, Toby said they were focusing on developing simultaneously chapters 3, 4 and 5, even if mostly on chapters 3 and 4. In december, they were still focusing on these three chapters. Then, in March 2023, Toby said they were focusing on completing chapter 3. 31st of October, chapter 3 was entirely finished, localization and porting aside. That's 8 months of focusing on chapter 3, 9-10 months if they started focusing only on chapter 3 before March.
Assuming they started fully focusing on completing chapter 4 starting from November, it means it took them 9-10 months to complete it, since we know they finished it during August or early September.
If completing chapter 5 takes as long as this, it means it would be finished near June 2025 (September 2024 from June 2025 = 10 months). When we consider that, it could release in late 2025/early 2026 if it releases separately from chapters 6 and 7, depending on how long its localization, porting and playtesting take.
Chapter 5 being finished mid-2025 means they would only have 2 chapters left to do at this point. Now, we don't know how far the work is done for those, but I can see them being done in 2-3 years, considering they made three whole chapters in 4 years (don't forget chapter 2's development only started in 2020), and that even Toby himself said next chapters won't take as long.
tldr; they made three chapters in 4 years, so I can see them making three more chapters (including chapter 5 which already started a while ago) in another 3-4 years, and therefore releasing chapter 7's release in 2027 or 2028

I have to agree that an extra chapter after 7 seems really unlikely unless it's a small epilogue or prologue chapter, everyone expects a conclusion at Chapter 7, and finding out you have to wait at least a year or two for the conclusipn would sting.
I also don't think that the way he's treating development news really allows for secret big content, Chapter 8 would come out probably over a decade after Chapter 1, and I think he would think 7 Chapters of story is a good stopping point.
I always assumed that Toby's goal was for a release of Chapters 3&4 to be around Christmas (December Holiday) which would place the release near the end of December. I think that QA and testing could take just the month of November and things could have worked out.
BUT the pushbacks by game-maker on releasing the patch have been stymieing to say the least. I think a pushback is inevitable. My next guess is then not in January, but February. Why? I think Deltarune coming out near/around holidays is fun and I would by very much into a Valentines release.
RIP a Toby Fox project every 3 years though.

I know it's probably not going to happen, but i was really hoping that when chapters 3 and 4 finally come out, Toby will make it, so for the first month or so, only chapter 3 is available to play, with chapter 4 unlocking later, so people would have some time to process everything that happened in chapter 3, make the cliffhanger at the end of it (if we get one) work better, and to make ch 3 feel overall more separate just like chapters 1 and 2.
If we get chapters 3 and 4 together at the same time, i don't think people will appreciate both of them as much separately.

Toby said in one of the recent newsletters that they're planning to do a simultaneous launch on all platforms, which is one of the reasons why it's taking a bit longer to get everything ready for release.

Where are you getting this from that they already developed the new chapters using the new feature ? Work on at least chpt 3 started at least 3 years ago and there was no mention of the feature so as far as i can tell it seems like a feature they either asked for and game maker recently has been able to make it or its a feature that game maker itself came up with and toby and the team wants to take advantage of it. If the work was already done with the new feature why would they need to test it ? That would assume that if it doesnt work in testing it would delay the game even more and thats just not how developing a game works. You dont just build your entire game on an experimental feature you havent been able to test

this is going to sound really harsh, but I think Toby needs to realise that his fanbase is like… growing up. I was in high school when deltarune released, now I’m almost done with an a university degree. His fanbase aren’t going to stay permanently excited 16 year olds forever, and if it’s going to be 7 years between chapters 1 and 3 (not even halfway through the whole game) he must know that a lot of his fanbase are just going to… fade away.
