In this video we discuss sisterlocks FAQs, maintenance, & the locing stages. Any questions we didn't answer, feel free to comment them down below. Julia's information is in the description box! Here are the questions we discussed during the video. I'm making this a series so please comment any questions you have that may not have been answered in the video :)
    Questions:
    1.) How much hair should be left out on your ends when establishing sisterlocks?
    2.) Can you ask for a specific loc size?
    3.) Does the amount of locs really matter?
    4.) How often should you retighten your hair?
    5.) What are the 4 loving stages?
    6.) How do I help my locs loc?
    7.) How long does it take for your hair to loc?
    8.) Can you go swimming with sisterlocks?

      Great video, great information! Thank you, Imani!
      I have a question for Julia: what if you suffer from a really dry scalp or dandruff, but you want Sisterlocks? What can be done to alleviate itchiness, particularly in the baby and teen loc stages?
      I'm a bit confused now, since she advised not to use water and mists for new locks.
      Thanks.

    Imani your sisterlocks consultant is amazing. Please thank her for me for being so generous in providing us with this information. I watch the interviews you did with her often as a reference to care for my sisterlocks. I made the mistake of colouring my hair prior to my sisterlocks establishment. I did that prior to watching the second part of your interview 🤦🏽‍♀️ you could imagine how disappointed I was with myself for doing that. Anyways you are very lucky to have her.

    Her hair is beautiful but I have to say something that is going to piss people off If you don't wash your hair for more than two months it will stink because it is dirty. Sweat has salt in it. The atmosphere has all kinds of pollutants and smells that will attach to the hair. When you are wearing cotton clothing and work out then just hang it to dry without washing it, it does not air out. It smells when it dries. Why? Sweat is not just water. When it dries it leaves behind a smell and residue. She might have 14 years experience in cultivating locs but she clearly does not have a dermatology license and clearly does not understand scalp issues. It is not just about a hairstyle. It is also about personal hygiene and care for your scalp and health of your hair. Since when is drying out your hair healthy? It might help your hair loc but what about its health? I would rather have healthy hair that takes longer to loc. I was a loose natural for 10 years, if I went more than two weeks of washing my hair it stunk because I worked out 3-4 times per week. I would often cowash but I could never go two months without shampooing. That is ridiculous. And no I didn't go seeking this video. It popped up in my notifications. I think I will turn them off after this video.

    • @ImaniGoodridge
      @ImaniGoodridge  4 года назад +11

      I personally wash my hair biweekly! This video is just one consultant’s perspective and tips on the locing process. If you feel you should wash your hair more frequently (which I do), I say go for it! I think what she’s trying to get across is new locs will unravel with excessive moisture. The less moisture you add to new locs, the faster they’ll loc. People often try to expedite the locing process. But I wouldn’t do that at the expense of your comfort and hygienic needs.

    • @arib4118
      @arib4118 4 года назад

      I have to say I’m a little confused on that part she mentioned about the hair drying out as well. To me, dry hairs sounds like easily broken or easy to become damaged hair 😖. I guess I just don’t get why it needs to stay dry as is if it will help loc sooner. It will still shrink and loc up naturally over time since it gets wet eventually from seldom shampooing anyway?

    • @arib4118
      @arib4118 4 года назад +1

      Imani Goodridge ahhh ok emphasis on the beginning stages of not washing right away. Gotcha.

    • @ImaniGoodridge
      @ImaniGoodridge  4 года назад +2

      Hair drying = keeping your hair dry and not making it wet unnecessarily to avoid slippage and unraveling (which newer locs that are not loced are more susceptible). Definitely not dry in the sense that it isn’t moisturized!
      For example, I used to struggle with dandruff. If I had young locs, I would moisturize my scalp with a little oil. Between this oil and your natural oils traveling down the shaft of your individual hairs and locs, your hair shouldn’t feel crunchy/dry to touch. And if that doesn’t work for you, I’d definitely consult with your loctician and/or a dermatologist who know your hair. I hope this helped you understand what she meant a little better! 😊

    I’ve had my sisterlocks for 2.5yrs my first consultant would put peppermint oil on my scalp with my retightening’s because of my itchy and dry scalp, this was my first 6months. My new consultant was displeased with my sisterlocks she informed me that too much of my ends were out and that my hair will take a long time to lock so she has not recommended me to use anything on my hair but my scalp is extremely dry/itchy and from the looks of it my hair is locked although the front of my hair has some old heat damage on the ends and does not curl so the ends are loose. I’ve trimmed the ends in the front twice and every couple weeks I oil my scalp. What are some recommendations for treating dry/dandruff scalp with soft textured natural hair that won’t counteract the locking process of new growth?

    • @ImaniGoodridge
      @ImaniGoodridge  3 года назад +2

      Thank you for sharing! I personally use tea tree oil for my dry scalp. I used to struggle with dandruff until I added it to my regimen. And if that doesn't work, I'd suggest seeing a dermatologist who can prescribe you a more effective oil! Since your consultant can see your hair and I can't, I'd definitely take their advice. However, if you feel the health of your hair and scalp is taking a back seat just to make your hair loc faster, I'd say find a balance between the two even if it means your hair will loc slower. Everyone's loc journey is different! Health is important :)

    I have gray hair and have had my Sisterlocks going on 5 months. Is the locking procedures and process the same as non-gray hair? My hair texture is not the same as most. The ends of my locks are all different and mostly unfinished. Can the ends be cut so they all look uniform or similar?

  • @s.m.5614
    @s.m.5614 4 года назад +1

    Another question, most consultants I've cone across and watched on RUclips require you to come to your retightening with a freshly cleaned head. If you wash your hair every two to three retightenings you will not be freshly cleaned. Is this only for newly loc'd persons?

    • @ImaniGoodridge
      @ImaniGoodridge  4 года назад +1

      Every consultant is different but for Julia, I'm pretty sure she's saying limit washing for newly loc'd people. Perhaps after the first two retightentings one could braid and band more frequently because your hair will have begun to loc! Also depends on how long your starter locs. The longer the locs, even if they unravel at the roots from washings, the entire loc won't come loose. It's easier to simply retighten it instead of restarting entire locs (which you would have to do for shorter locs that experience slippage and unraveling) due to the length of a clients hair. Ultimately making the locing process even longer than it should be. I hope this was helpful!

    What is happening when you are thinning at the root of your sisterlocs causing breakage?

    • @ImaniGoodridge
      @ImaniGoodridge  4 года назад +2

      A number of things. Slippage or breaking at the root because you took too long to retighten your hair. The smaller your locs and the longer you allow your new growth to grow out, the more susceptible your locs are to thinning at the root. Slippage happens more frequently with locs that aren't mature/fully loced through over moisturizing! Or (in rare occasions) you may just be experiencing hair thinning and want to see a dermatologist!

      It's after your locs have swelled/expanded. Your locs are completely loced and they begin to condense. That's why you see newer locs (baby & teen phases) tend to have more volume than mature, fully loced locs. I hope this helps :)

I started with permed ends so in some areas I have a little more than half of my ends loose and others areas like on the hairline pretty much loc'd all the way. Any suggestions on how to take care of the loose permed ends? I wanted to keep them to have some length.

    • @ImaniGoodridge
      @ImaniGoodridge  4 года назад

      Hi! Great question! We actually talk about this in greater detail in part two which I'll have uploaded on my channel this Sunday @6:30PM EST if that interests you at all. In short, some people opt to curl their permed/relaxed ends (I'd suggest heatless curls such perm rods, pipe cleaners, flexi rods, etc) to add style. Since these ends can't loc, like you, people keep their chemically treated ends for length and cut them off once they're ready. For further care to ensure your natural hair doesn't unravel because of your straighter permed ends, make sure you're braiding and banding when washing your hair! I hope this was helpful :)

      Short answer: you cant start sisterlocks on relaxed hair. Most people opt to grow their hair out and trim off the relaxed ends prior to installation. In order to do that, you need to take the sisterlocks certification class for $1500(?) and become a consultant. Good luck 😂

    Awesome video and the questions are informative. I’m new to sisterlocks, and you were saying that dying the hair is not recommended, but is using henna hair color okay?

      Yes because it is a natural alternative! My mom dyes her hair with henna. Here's the link of how we did it ruclips.net/video/H8xtOgovcoU/видео.html

    Hello my sisterloc family. I've had my locs for 2yrs. Done everything she told me to do, and not to do.Within that time I've had multiple locs joined together. I mentioned to my consultant maybe their to small. I've had bunching, holes. What do I do. I just lost a loc from the back because it was so thin. Should I find a different consultant. Or see what happens.

      Hi! :) In my opinion, if you've communicated to your consultant your grievances and she hasn't addressed them (ex. told you why she's joining them, you're still experiencing bunching/holes,etc.), those are reasons to look for another consultant. At the end of the day, you're paying for a service (a good amount at that). And if you aren't receiving the service of quality that you desire after 2 years, it seems reasonable to look for another option!

    My consultant locked my hair 3/4 of the way down. She said this was because my hair is thicker towards the root and thins out at the ends. Will my hair still loc? Can I loc the tips post installation?

      Your hair will still loc, no need to worry! Your consultant is the only person who actually sees your hair and can give you the best advice. What it sounds like to me is she did the right thing. Your ends will just be curly similar to your natural hair curl pattern and that completely normal even when your sisterlocks are establish as close to the end as possible. They'll loc overtime.

      I was told the same thing by my consultant. I was concerned about the amount of hair being left out, because I personally thought it was too much. But she said that my hair thins out at the ends. In that case, is it ok that more than the recommended half inch of hair is left out?

    How many inches of hair did you have at the time of your establishment?

      My sisterlocks were established when I was 8 so I can't really give you a specific number. But stretched, I believe my hair was a little longer than chin length!

      The official sisterlocks tool. It looks like a small crochet hook with a pointy tip!
