Julia's information is in the description box! Here are the questions we discussed during the video. I'm making this a series so please comment any questions you have that may not have been answered in the video :) 1.) What are some common misconceptions about sisterlocks? 2.) Can I add water/setting mousse to style my sisterlocks? 3.) What is the difference between sisterlocks, microlocs, and interlocks? Opinions on these locs? 4.) Heat Styling: Can you use curling irons and flat irons on sisterlocks? 5.) Can you install sisterlocks on relaxed hair? 6.) Can you color/dye your sisterlocks? 7.) Can you install sisterlocks on colored/dyed hair? 8.) Thoughts on protective styles over sisterlocks? (braids, wigs, weave, etc.)
I didn't agree with how she defined sisterlocks vs microlocs vs interlocs. Here's my own opinion: -Interlocking has been around for a long time. Most sizes can be interlocked. From large to microsized. It's an alternative to twisting or freeforming - Microlocs. It's literally in the name. The method doesn't matter. They can be achieved many ways whether you're interlocking, twisting, braiding etc. If it is micro sized, it's a microloc. -Sisterlocks ARE microlocs. Sisterlocks ARE interlocked. Sisterlocks are a branded form of interlocked microlocs. They are standardized (at least they're supposed to be 👀) from the size, to the grid, to the certification of the consultant. It's like how a Nike shirt (any brand works in this example) is still by definition a t-shirt but you expect a certain quality and consistency. Sidenote for those who can't afford sisterlocks: There are microlocs that look quite similar if not better than some of the sisterlocks I've seen and vice versa. If you can achieve the look you want and are happy, there are tons of tutorials here on YT.
You explained this well, especially using the Nike analogy. Nike didn't even invent the sneaker 🤭 I wore SL for about 15 years and loved them (along with my consultant), so I am well-aquainted with the brand. However it never occurred to me to describe someone with any other form of locs as "step" or "cousin". They're all locs, and it's just hair!
Sisterlocs and microlocs are both gorgeous! I decided to do microlocs because I want to do my own hair. I don’t want to depend on others to do my hair for me. Relying on a professional all the time is like being relaxed to me. I want true freedom. I pay zero dollars and have a head full of beautiful micro locs. 🤷🏾♀️
As you should! Everyone chooses the style of locs that's most suitable for them for numerous reasons. True freedom is one factor. I'm lucky to know how to retighten my own hair (did it for 8 years up until this retightening with Julia in this video). Knowing how to do your locs on your own is definitely a huge perk :)
Yo your neighbor is VIBING!! I’m not even mad!!! When they hit that Boney James I was like okay!!! 👏🏾👏🏾 I felt the same way in the first video ....okay. Now back to watching for more hair info 😂
It’s so crazy how much people are charging to retighten! My certified consultant charged me $75 and finished in 1.5-2hrs. If it took her longer than that she charged $85. EVERY time! I get compliments EVERY where I go, and even other customers in the salon who are sitting in other consultants hair always ask how their hair can look like mine and watch me walk in after they’ve been in the chair with their consultant and I walk out before them. I started with 1-2” of hair 2.5 years ago and my hair is past my shoulders. I have never lost a Loc, go every 6-8 weeks for retightening, and colored before they were installed. So I am completely shocked at the time and money people are expending for this lifestyle. Btw my hair is thick and I have ALOT of locks. My sister says she can’t believe it’s all my hair.
I love her!!!! So much good information that also transforms into all locs. Whether they are Sisterlocks, Microlocs or Traditional locs!! Thank you so much for sharing the knowledge Queen!!
I colored my hair before getting my sisterlocs installed, and my locking process was fine. I guess it just depends on what the hair decides to do. 🤷🏿♀️
This has been do informative right now I'm waiting for my hair to grow more before getting them installed. I have had them and had to travel so far which resulted in my cutting them and going to traditional locs. I cut my hair very short now waiting for the length to be long enough to be installed which I can't wait. Again you have been great and answer all of my questions
I really need advise. I was told to Spritz my hair... Ie water everyday.. My locs are 2 months old now... I'm not sure which is which and I'm absolutely confused. I want my hair to grow and grow healthy..
Hello I’m getting sisterlocks I have been to a consultant and had 3 tester put in I heard you say that is should be to the end, but my tester are about 1/4 Down the shaft. Should I say something??
My consultant said that it should be to the end (I'm not certified; I'm the one in the chair haha). I think you should! Ask why they didn't do it all the way to the end. They might have had a valid reason based on your hair that I wouldn't know because I can't see it myself :) If there is no "valid" reason, I 100% would ask them to do it again. After all, you are paying for a service. If they are professional, they shouldn't be offended by you making sure it's up to your requested standards.
I have a question. I have had my Sisterlocks since 2019 and had to cut a lot of bunching off because they were improperly done but then my hair started fraying and bunching again. Can you please tell me why and how to remedy it???
I'm not quite sure what you mean by smooth. If you're referring to the way my locs look now as smooth, my sisterlocks are mature/completely loced. If you got your sisterlocks in June, my guess is your hair is still in the primary phase of locing. It takes people around a year for their locs to loc. After that, you locs will begin to contract and get "smoother". However, everyone's locing process and timeline is different. Just leave your locs alone, be patient, and allow your hair to loc at it's own pace is the only advice I can give :)
Nope! I used to competitively swim and started my loc journey when practicing twice a day. I suggest plaiting your hair (maybe 4 total just so your ends don’t unravel). Then wear two swim caps. I’d put a cloth one on first and then a regular rubber/latex cap! The extra cap helped to keep my hair as dry as possible while also limiting yanking on my baby sisterlocks ☺️
Thank you for this very informative video. Both you ladies have beautiful locks! I notice Imani that your locks are tiny and so are mine. How long have you had your locks and even though they are tiny do the lock itself tend to become thin? I have for the most part did everything that your consultant suggested in maintaining my locks. I want to know will tiny locks have a life span of 10 years like thicker locks?
I have traditional Locs but i love to watch sister locks. I must say it was the price for me at first and that is why I didn’t get them. I have no regrets because i am loving my hair but i also think that sisterlocks are beautiful. Yours are so beautiful and so is your momma and your sisters and your consultant is so informative and she knows what she is talking about. Also this is exactly the reason why i am not dying my hair. This was great to watch! Thanks for sharing.
If I should not be using mousse or setting lotion, how do I get curls?? Perm rods, black sponge rollers, twist rods.... I don's get curls. Pipe cleaners that I keep in for at least 3-4 days, then I get curls.
She is saying you shouldn't be using mousse or setting lotion if you locs are not loced (the baby & teen phases of the locing process) to avoid slippage and slowing the locing process. If your locs are loced, mousse/setting lotion is fair game. Honestly, you usually only need water to set your curls. Just don't take the curls out until your hair is completely dry. If you need other products because your hair tends to not hold the curl, by all means use what works for your hair. Everyone's locs are different!
I have been to 3 consultants and none of them have ever wet or sprayed my sisterlocks when retightening. I dont understand why so many videos say you should do that. Its not necessary plus your hair is more fragile when its wet.
Exactly! It makes your hair more susceptible to popping and breaking at the root as you retighten the hair. I think a lot of people just aren't familiar with interlocking which doesn't require product/water/etc. for maintenance vs. retwisting/palm rolling which comes to mind when people think about loc maintenance.
I have been interlocking for almost two years now on dry hair not one has broke off I watch videos but I don’t follow everything that is being said the same thing with using conditioner once your locs mature some still don’t use it then complain their hair is breaking because of color everyone should know if you color your hair you need to use conditioner after every wash I use conditioner I don’t have buildup from what I can see those who complain about buildup aren’t rinsing their hair properly some of them admit it also putting water on the hair all the time isn’t necessary either I put rose water once a week the rest of time I just oil my scalp
A question for next time I have is: "CONJOINED LOCS, should we cut one, twist them together, interlock them together". Since it's so fat is it causing trauma to the root longterm? These dueling dragons got me messed up.
Hi Looking for her information I will fly to her cause I need a consultations like her and by the way y’all loc are beautiful and I have slipping and it’s been a year for me and I did color my hair and I was told to use water every day so now I’m confused 🤔

If you want small locs, are willing to maintain them properly, and consider the cost of sisterlocks, I'd definitely recommend them! They aren't heavy like traditional/dreadlocks tend to be due to the added weight of products used for retwists. Ultimately, it's up to you :)
@@ImaniGoodridgeI've had traditional locs and they weren't heavy and I never used products to retwist, there is no need for any type of products for locs.
I realized I had a sister lock fall out around my edges., now I have a bald spot. How can I grow edges back. I don’t know what happened. I don’t know if my sisterlock consultant relighting it too tight or what.. I’m 2years and 7months locked.
During my second year of sisterlock installation I have had several locs fall out from my hairline. In December my sisterlock trainee handed me 5 locs while she was retightening my hair. I have not been back. I wish there was more information on what could've caused this. I did the retightening class and have combined a lot of my locs because I was scared of losing any more.
I did my own install 2 years 3 months ago and I have kept all mine. I was listening to another channel and she said it usually comes from the constant manipulation and tension on the hair, getting them retightened too often and possibly being too small.
They may be too small consider combining sisterlocks that are a similar size around your hairline, also is there ever any discomfort in that area when getting a retie? Do you hear hairs popping during the retie? Because hairs popping means less strand holding that loc together. You may want to ask your loctician to do one less rotation.
My mom has thinner edges as well as really small locs. What we've done to account for that is retighten the edges less to reduce tension on the hairline from retightenings on thinner hair. For example, we may retighten her hair every 6 weeks but will either 1.) do one less rotation for the edges or 2.) retighten the edges a few weeks later to give them a "break". Hair thickness varies throughout your head and my mom's thinner sections happen to be around the edges. Perhaps you may want to try this! These ladies also gave so helpful advice. I hope we helped :)
I love sisterlocks,🤦♂️ microlocs, it depends on the hair and how it is done, young lady with sisterlocks is beautiful.. you can have a young lady with microLocs, beautiful, two inches it's on. All about healthy hair.🤷♀️
I don't know! I personally do not have experience with microlocks. I do not believe so, however, since they are a form of interlocks. Interlocking does not require products for locing like the retwisting method for traditional/dreadlocks do.
No it shouldn’t be any products being used to install microlocs I have them I just washed & conditioned my hair before I installed them I started with braids
One Planet no microlocs & sisterlocs aren’t the same anyone can install microlocs with braids twist or interlocks there is no parting system needed I did mines with braids I didn’t part I just pulled pieces of hair like some do when doing box braids sisterlocs is perfect parting plus I only have 200 braidlocs
Honestly, rarely. They only tangle when they get long (based on my experience). But all you have to do is comb through your hair with your fingers from end to root which takes 2 seconds.

What is her opinion on using henna?
Hi Imani. Is it okay to do braid-outs frequently (1 to 2 times a week) with no products before locs are fully mature?
This was very helpful. Thanks for doing this.
