Thumbs up for this great work. I have the same workstation and i want to upgrade it. Can you provide some info about the thermals ? The gpu you put in is an open air card so all the heat would be released inside the case , so in a long gaming session can the pc keep up with the thermals and what about the noise levels ? Also i want to know your opinion about the cpu heatsink , can we change that? Thanx in advance 🖐
The stock heat sink does an adequate job of cooling the cpu during long gaming sessions. The noise level of the cpu is minimal to not noticeable. If you plan to overclock your processor you should consider installing an aftermarket liquid cooling option. If you do install an aftermarket liquid cooling option you'll have to get very creative on where you mount the radiator/fan assembly. I hope this info helps!
@@GreenPCGamerscom thanx for the reply .what about the gpu thermals. it is okay with an open air cooler gpu or do i have to consider a blower style gpu ?
We've had awesome luck with the open air cooling gpu's. The professional workstations do a great job of mitigating heat inside the chassis. On a few occasions we have had to install additional cooling fans. That was only because we were running high end gpu's during long sessions of very taxing gaming. That being said, GPU's with blower fans would also be a great option. Most of the high end Quadro cards that are normally installed stock in to HP/Dell/Lenovo workstations utilize blower fans. Hopefully this info helps.

We've never attempted a chassis swap on the Z230. However, it has been done before by other community members. The biggest obstacle is normally the control panel/power button.
Why not put the new SSD above the GPU? That slot up there looks like 4x and wouldn't block the 1st GPU fans airflow, the NVMe interface is only 4x after all so there would be no performance hit.

An x4-slot is just as fast as an x16 slot. The x4 slot has 4 lanes connected, the x16 slot has 16 lanes connected. That NVME-card is an x4-card, so can only use 4 lanes. The NVME can't even use more than 4 lanes, so you are wasting 12 lanes by doing this, and you are blocking airflow into the video card. Better put it in the X4-slot that was designed for it above the video card, and probably it will be even faster. That top slot is connected to the CPU, the second X-16 sot is connected to the north-bridge, and therefore always has a bigger latency.
