My guess is that they decided that wasn’t the direction they wanted for the characters? They’re implied to have history ingame, but they might have decided familial wasn’t the way to go. It might have been because it would have called into question why Cackletta wasn’t in a similar position of royalty. I’ve always interpreted that she was a sort of court magician, personally.
I find it hilarous that Mario and Luigi just are casually dancing while a magic ball of death causing about 950 damage is heading to their foes, I know it's just a placeholder but I feel like the devs put that in just for the fun of it
Who knew that the Yoshi theather sequence was originally going to something completly different? Either way, pretty cool to see all this beta content from one of my favourite games of all time.
I get why they changed defense to just whatever the situation is for the attack, but I love this idea of having to figure out the best way of defending against a certain enemy or attack with either the jump or the hammer. But both could work with the proper timing. This is already very interesting.
I just wanna say, I really appreciate the way Rookie's used sprite falls down and bobs a bit as he lands. Love every tiny little attention to detail you put in with your editing.
6:40 this would have been really cool to see in the final game. It would have added a good challenge to be forced to decide between hammer and jumo defense
It's so cool to see that some of this unused content was added in later games. Like Jump, Hammer, etc. being their own selection blocks in battle. A bummer we never got to switch Jump defense and Hammer defense tho.
It'd be interesting if someone made a ROM hack adding in some of the unused features. I'm thinking in particular the "choose how to defend" mechanic which would have added a lot more to the game.
8:25 The tree seen here actually does exist in the final game, it’s the tree that’s behind the thunder orb in the area south of the entrance to Teehee Valley. I always wondered why that was the only tree that looked different.
wow! having to choose how to defend in battle is actually really interesting! could you maybe showcase how interactions that don't normally happen work in this? Many people mention the 'choose your defense' thing, and I have the feeling that it's going to be added into brothership based on a few context cues from the trailer
Oh yeah. Is Mario's ability to spot beans also unimplemented? When he's Tiny, in the final game an exclamation mark appears above his head, telling you there's a bean to dig up.
Did the minecart battery sounds get used anywhere else in the game? Either way, seems like they got used for the Cobalt Star in PiT. Also, the flip block bikes feel slower because they move when a brother lands on them, instead of immediately from jumping.
Something else to note, in the final you have to hold relatively forward on the bikepad to move it, but in this version, the bikepads just move automatically regardless of if you're holding any direction whatsoever.
Hello, Skawo. I am hoping you can clarify something regarding this demo. The text is Japanese, but I was under the impression that the English version came first, a quick search says the English version released first, albeit by only a few days. Does this have the Japanese version changes, such as heart blocks? Did they translate this to English then make changes then translate it back? I’m curious where in development this demo exists.
Even though the english game came first, I'm pretty sure the text was originally in Japanese. The Japanese release's changes are not implemented yet, no.
The theory I've heard most often is that they gave the English localizers an earlier version of the game before they finished working on the original Japanese version and the English version just happened to be released earlier. The Japanese version seems less buggy and more balanced with equipment and stats, but either way it's weird they didn't just release it on the same day since they wound up releasing just a few days off each other.
Let’s be honest here, The hooded beanish guy was a very Interesting character to me, I really like his design tho 🫠 22:42 But the side quest was really annoying tho 😓 23:19
I feel like the original version of defense, where you had access to jump and hammer at the same time and had to figure out which one to use would have made the game significantly better, as the fact that dodging attacks is generally somewhat too simple is one of the series' biggest issues (you can dodge almost all attacks trivially throughout the series by just pressing A and B at the same time, so you don't have to pay attention to which bro needs to dodge, only a very few attacks are designed to punish you for doing this).
It's probably related to balancing issues. The players might get confused on which kind of defence to perform in short amount of time, or some attacks could be cheesed by hammering the projectiles while the intended way was jumping over them and other way around when the players think they can put out the flame with hammers only to pass through it and take damage. It could be speculated that Ghost Fawful summoned by Cackletta during the final boss is a remnant of that idea, as you gotta use jump and hammer in the same attack segment.
so THERE IS a voice clip for the word tickle! but i wonder why exactly it was taken out from the final game (even if it sounds off and not very fitting in a way) also apparently the bros icons on the overworld come included with a street sign, thats cool
21:58 Could they be referring to the unused character cameos? It seems that overall, this build of the game predates a slightly later version thats yet to be uncovered that may actually have working versions of the character cameos
Yeah, there are so many differences. There are tons of sprites using earlier designs too, the minecart and Yoshi sprites look like they're made for a slightly different art style, rather than the Tomato Adventure-esque style of the final, there's a lot more detailed shading and anti-aliasing that doesn't fit in with the final sprites
@@Skawo I don't know how common it would necessarily be, but it's at least possible that this leaked build didn't represent what had been developed as of the build date; it's entirely possible they used an older snapshot that may have been preferable to work with and carved out the demo stuff from things that were considered near final and/or demonstrable It feels unreal to me to see that this much content was reworked mere months before launch- It's obviously easier on a smaller sprite based game, but this was still way before the heyday of day 1 patches (I do not know the contents of the playable portion of the demo)

I decided to check out this myself, and I think you missed something interesting. If you retry the minecart minigame after you clear it, you see some of the most obscure sprites in the game. In the final they look extremely rough and off-model, in the beta here they look crushed and completely unfinished. What's most interesting to me though is that the sprites have Mario and Luigi with blue eyes, like Peach has in this version. Also, I think you forgot to mention last that Peach has different sprites from the final. I should note that by "after you clear it" I mean, literally directly after you reach the other side once the minigame is over. you have to beat it, and then before leaving the room walk up to the guy and talk to him and say you want to ride again.
It’s not that you can’t dig up beams, it’s that the flag isn’t set to allow you to do so. In the final, you have to talk to one of the chicklehuck trees first.
