  • There are so many amazing moments of airtime on coasters. Airtime takes many different forms and can deliver some of the best moments on a coaster. So today I decided to do my best to ultimately determine what airtime moment truly is the best.

Here’s an easy way to imagine SteVes airtime. Imagine a B&M invert. You know how hard they tug at your legs when preforming a turn? Now imagine that pull, but as airtime. That’s SteVe’s outward banked turn.

The reason Steve’s outer banked is the lateral forces that are added. The laterals are converted into stronger airtime because of the banking.

for SteVe's outerback: first, I must say that I haven't been on it, do I don't know how it feels
but looking at it from a forces point of view, it makes sense. It's no just a hill, it's also a turn, which means the force exerted on you isn't perfectly vertical or horizontal, it's angled. As such, if you had a flat piece of track, you'd have part of the force converted into lateral G's and part of it converted into vertical G's.
to maximize airtime, you need to align yourself with the force. In that turn's case, that means creating an outer-banked turn so the track is perpendicular to the force exerted. This way, all that force becomes airtime.
In short, the turn is banked outwards to convert all the lateral G's into extra airtime

Allow me to explain (I know, I know, a million people already have...) why SteVen's outerbank is so good.
A: why do you bank track on a turn? To convert lateral g-forces into vertical g-forces. Normally this is done inner, so they're positives.
B: You mentioned the hill before the outer-banked hill. The outerbank is basically the same, but because you're turning there are also laterals.
C: what Shilke did was bank it outwards so that _all_ the laterals were turned into negative G-forces. So, you have the amazing ejector from the tophat before it, combined with probably 0.5-1 extra negative g-forces because of the negated laterals.
That's why SteVen's outer-banked hill is so amazing.

Great Video! I think the final run of airtime hills on Phantom’s Revenge deserves a spot on the list. The restraints are soooo minimal, you’re traveling at hyper coaster speeds, and there’s like 5 in a row. All this makes for the craziest ejector I’ve experienced. It’s not the most sustained but it’s some of the most violent airtime.

4:58 as long as two force vectors are less than 90° apart (in this case the hill and banking) they add and accumulate into one greater force vector. Or more simplified, the two forces combine into a bigger one making stronger airtime

YT just recommended this video for me. But I did want to say the best airtime moment on SV for me is the twisted headchopper airtime hill after the MCBR. Somehow it manages sustained ejector airtime all the way through, and gives you some laterals while it does that. The hill feels like it's going to make you crash into the supports all the way down, and it goes ALL THE WAY to the ground.

  • @Mechum22
    @Mechum22 Год назад

Completely agree with your #1 selection. And I also agree with your estimation of SV’s outerbank. To me, that element gets points for being unique, fun, and kind of bonkers, but as far as actual airtime, it doesn’t deliver quite as strongly as many hype it up to. I’d actually put IRat’s quarry dive in that same category. It’s great because it acts as a wonderful finale after a slightly tame middle act, but in terms of airtime, it’s good but nothing mind-blowing. (IMO, iRat’s first drop is probably the highlight of the ride for me.) In the end, I have yet to ride a coaster with more brutal, sustained ejector air than that found on El Toro.

The ejector on the triple camelbacks of Twisted Timbers put the ejector on skyrush to shame. I agree with the thoughts on Steve’s outerbank turn. I've ridden Steel Vengeance and can explain why the outer bank is more powerful than the normal airtime hill. When you go through a normal airtime hill, all of the airtime is coming from negative vertical g forces produced by the hill. When you curve the hill, that generates lateral g-forces that aren't there on a normal airtime hill. By banking the track outward and curving the hill in the opposite direction, you are converting those lateral g-forces to vertical g-forces (negative, of course). These lateral g forces that got converted to negative vertical g forces are added to the already existing negative g forces you get from the hill itself, hence making it one of the most powerful airtime moments on any coaster

GabesDaBomb Ugh. Sorry to hear it. I don’t wear glasses (except to drive), so I don’t have advice beyond what I already suggested. If I were you, though, I’d start paying attention to other enthusiasts and spotting which ones wear glasses on the rides, and then ask them about their methods if/when you meet them. There are probably enthusiasts who’ve worked through the same issues you are dealing with.
I know this method has helped me with all kinds of little issues at parks.

For Steel Vengeance - as someone who’s also never ridden it, I believe the reason the banking adds so much is because, since the coaster is turning away from the direction it’s banked (making it outer banked) it transfers the lateral g’s you’d be experiencing into negative g’s

The 2 giant airtime hills after SteVe’s first drop give great sustained ejector airtime. Your out of your seat for so long, and those hills are huge. The outward banked turn is super fun as well. Also you get a few good seconds of ejector airtime on twisted colossus, specifically on the camel back that goes under the top gun stall, on the blue side.

  • @anamore
    @anamore 3 года назад

Banking outward on a curved airtime hill slightly increases airtime because you combine the vertical and lateral forces into one. That hill would get like -0.4 if unbanked, but -0.55 if banked outward, I haven't been on steve, but that's how this works.

OK so I have experienced all of these moments so here is my list:
    7: B&M Camelbacks
    6: Twisted Timbers Camelbacks
    5: Skyrush's Second Airtime Hill
    4: Lightning Rod's Quad Down
3: Steve's Outerbanked Airtime Hill (This is a good element)
    2: Toro's Camelbacks
1: Iron Rattlers Quarry Dive. I'm sorry I have to explain myself on this. Mostly what you said is true but LEAVE YOURSELF ROOM. You are doing yourself a disfavor by stapling yourself. Also when I was there the ride ops were not stapling. And if they do, before they check, scoot forward and when they have checked your seat, scoot back. (This is the secret to good airtime.) If you do not leave yourself room, then you will not feel this airtime. I rode it at the end of the day. Not like last ride of the night type stuff but like sunset so the ride was warmed up and it was hauling. Most people say that the top of the quarry is a dead spot, and while I did feel it a little, I didn't as much as people say. But anyway there was my advice when you are riding Iron Rattler. Oh yeah last thing wait longer for the back row. Its worth it. Trust me.

Nice vid. Personally, I love floater, flojector, and ejector - it’s all great to me. I’ve been on all the coasters in your video, and for me these are my top three airtime moments (excluding the airtime on first drops): 1. El Toro’s double camelbacks (ejector); 2. Phoenix’s finale run (ejector); 3. Ravine Flyer II’s bridge jump (flojector).

Floater vs Ejector. I feel like people don't know the difference. Floater is when negative g's gradually lift you up. Ejector is when there is a sharp change in direction that quickly pops you out of your seat. There is only one ejector moment on SteVe, and it's on the first half of the double up into the mid course brakes. The rest is all float. It tends to come faster and sometimes stronger than on a B&M, but after several rides I've only felt the one ejector pop, and it only really happens in the back half of the train. The outer bank is amazing. Its the strongest moment of floater I've ever felt.

My pick: the ENTIRETY of Twisted Colossus at Magic Mountain lmao I literally feel like I'm on the brink of certain death the moment the train hits the first main drop to the end and on each track. Like holy crap its actual fear that strikes and its CONSTANT airtime, theres maybe 1 to 2 seconds between each element and they're all back to back back and insane. Any POV online will never do the speed, negative forces and absolute ejector airtime to the max justice and it's the the ONE ride I will not put my hands up on, I cannot do it hahaha but it's still one of my favorite rides ever

So first things first: SteVe´s outward banked hill isn't one of the best airtime moments on earth. Its great, but not strong enough.
So my currently favourite airtime is on Untamed´s quad hills towards the end of the ride. I also love the final twisted bunny hop on Zadra (but because of the laterals for the most part) and Lech´s small bunny hill before the final inversion.
But what maaaaaaany people don't know about is Nessie's drop of the mid course brakes. With the Schwarzkopf lap bars you can get tons of room, and when you get enough room, you have rapid standing airtime that is super strong and feels lethal.

We have some short but intense ejector on some coasters like on Kärnan or Fluch von Novgorod, but I still prefer the airtime on Colossos, the Intamin prefab at the Heide Park. It feels like this shouldn't be possible. Judging by look, height and form of the hills you expected some floater like on B&M Hypers, but you get the full intamin airtime experience. In the case of Steve's outer bank it's great because it's literally 4 seconds of consistent sustained ejector, unlike the the first hill that starts off as floater and turns into ejector that Isn't even as strong as the outerbank.
