Great video as always. I have to say, the more I see of these the less I like them. As well as being too thick, i just think they look really messy - the way you have to put in blank 2 x 4 tiles to fill in the holes or the 2 x 4 lane markers (which are too wide) - even though the tiles are smooth you can't get away from the fact that visually they look rubbish with all the gaps showing - also there is no option to for a curved road plate. The only thing I saw somewhere else was that you can create a really nice looking 2 lane dual carriageway or 3 lane motorway with the new plates. I guess it's nice to get the green plates, signs, traffic lights etc but are you really going to want those every time you buy a road plate? How many 50 signs and speed bumps do you need? Lol! At £17.99 they are just too expensive for what you get. Bah humbug!

Woaow cool!!! Hello!! Thank you to share your thought about it, i love it too, this is perfect for me. I'm gonna probably buy this type of road plates!! Thanks!!!🤩🤩
It's crying out for more blank crosswalk sized plates and even some half size again (so quarter sized compared to the biggest ones). This would allow some pretty cool single lane street style town builds like for example how a lot of Japanese cities are. I can also see dark grey tiling is likely the big ticket item on things like bricklink as a result of this! Luckily they are pretty common in other sets.
I like the look, the old roads are a bit too flimsy. But I think the new ones should have been designed in such a way that the center line would be a classic white tile.
I would remove Modulers off there plates and put them on the studs of a road plate, I would only keep the studed sides free if it was for parking. I think the new road system makes good flat roofs for large custom buildings.
I like these new road plate. I do brickfilming and sometimes I would want to have a low angle shot. Baseplates can't be connected with bricks from underneath to make them higher off the ground. With these roads however I can! Plus I only have two road plates anyway.
I think the ramp pieces could be useful for a few things. Luckily I never invested in a road system for my city. Hopefully this will be a cheaper option in the long run. If not baseplates and tiles.
I agree with u on all of this. I might get them now as it looks not as bad as I thought being higher up. Although I'm still not sure as making my own roads with tiles can still give me more freedom
Honestly, the Mils version is still better because of how wide or narrow you want to make your roads and you can wire everything under the roads if you want to light up your sets
I have mixed feelings about this new road system. I don’t personally have a city layout, but if I did, I probably wouldn’t use these in place of the baseplate roads. However, I do think these new plates would be really good for bridges and elevated roads in a city, which is what I would use them for if I did have a city. They would also be good for areas that need a large smooth surface, like maybe an industrial area or a sea port. To summarize, I don’t think these are better than the baseplate roads, but I do think they can be used well in other aspects of a city.
agreed :) With a huge bit of investment it could be interesting to use old road plates as main streets and the new system cutting through smaller residential areas... someone else can try this out though, our pile of baseplates isn't going anywhere for now
I think if they made it using standard plates or even base plates and then had a tile layer on top of that instead of the double plate height bulky bits more people would buy them for parts and be able to adapt them better, I hope more people feel the same way and they bring out a version 2.0 that does this
I'll buy one as soon as possible just to test it out, but I feel like I'm gonna adopt them in the long run. I should say I just started going back to LEGO last year, so not only do I not have many buildings, but I also don't own any classic road plates, so it's not such a problem for me. Really though, the main reason I'll probably adopt this is that my vehicles are Speed Champions/Creator 8-wide scale, and I intend to keep it that way (I've converted my Porsche 911 into an 8-wide and I'm looking forward to do the same with the upcoming City sports car), so I need wider roads than the ones offered in the old baseplates. EDIT: And for the difference in height between the road plates and the modular sidewalks? I think I'll just dismantle the carton boxes I receive from shipping and just slid them under the buildings. That might be enough.
Would you be able to post something that shows the Road System and the Modular from the straight on angle? I'm wondering about the depth difference of having the Road System next to the modular and what side would be raised/lowered. You had some good over and angle images, I was wondering about some direct on and flat.
HELLO @Brick’n It ! I've seen a bit of videos reviewing these new road plates and it seems that no one noticed, or pointed out, that basically, a base plate is exactly like a tile but without the edges, so if you just put a baseplate over a studed tile (NOT a slick tile), you will have exactly the same height as with 2 tiles.... So basically, just put your modular buildings over a one-tile-high "frame" and it will reach exactly the same height as the new road tiles ! So the pavement of the modular building will just be over the street by one tile of height.
good review Chris and really appreciate your dedication for getting these early reviews out on Christmas Eve is quite something - I like these new plates and will be getting several to try out in what will initially be a small setup. The curb for me has to be higher and I’ll be using the Mils technique as well. If the Mils and new road plates can be integrated in such a way that I’m happy with then fit out the rest with them too. For many people there will be some trial and error - with hopefully not too much error.
These would be good if the cost wasn't so prohibitive. I like the width of the current baseplates. Yes, with a narrower plate you can fit more buildings in your city, but you also can't see those buildings very well when they are packed in close together. Thankfully my city is large and pretty much laid out already, and I have plenty of baseplates to spare. I will experiment with these, but they won't replace what I currently have.
Not a lot of people have room for a huge lego city. I have the room but i like smaller denser city's. The old roadplates are a little bit too big. I never had them as a child. So i will use these new roads in the city, the rest is just grass from a model shop with small trains. Works well with lego. I'm thinking tables with hole in the middle and the center ring in the middle is the city center. Outside is just trains and houses, and under the table a metro station and underwater world. Already bought couple modulars and a train and 3 times the road plates too mess around with.
Also the new system allows you to create a highway or a motroway as now 4 road plates will allwo to creat 4 lane road Which was previously impossible. Sadly it would be that expensive, but I guess if anyone really builds that big of a road, then other pieces will dwarf road tiles in price.
It's likely a 50km/h sign as LEGO is from Denamrk which used km not miles and 50 miles per hour seems a bit large for a city. I don't know how does it look in Denmark or country with Imperial system, but in the Poland 50km/h is the standard for the city if not limited further. Not that you can't use that as miles sign, but I think there's some metric centric view here. And likely Denamrk centric as well.
As a comment. My kids have sereval houses and structures that are based on those double height plates. And they have "connectors" on them so they would click on to those easily. Seems like they are transitioning slowly to that system as a complete modular system.
Great review!!! I'll buy a set that has them to play around but I'm not switching. someone suggested that you can build good bridges with it, that seems like a good idea !!?!?
Nice video Chris, Im going to invest into getting these, I’ve rearranged my city in preparation for them and have gained so much room. How’d you get hold of them before jan 1st?
@@BricknIt man I wish I’d known earlier, the delivery date now is January. I may as well wait until the first and collect the vip points. Thanks for sharing them though it’s been the best I’ve seen visually of the new roads. Thank you 👍🏻
I will probably be getting the new road plates to make a parking garage as they would be thick enough to work and with the studs on the bottom you can build up
To summarize: More expensive Look weird with the 2×4 plates Is to tight to fit 2 Lego City trucks next to each other Not compatible with the baseplate (that basically all city buildings have) Not compatible with old system There is no curves
With the creator or city sets they stopt using baseplates years ago. Instead we get the 8x8 or 8x16 (occasionally a 16x16) regular plates. Basically the only place to get baseplates is in de expert modular sets. I think Lego is phasing out baseplates all together. What I haven't seen in this system yet is a proper corner piece and I hope they will release that.
Yeah the modular this year is still on a baseplate so I don't think they will be disappearing anytime soon but it'll be interesting to see what they do. Definitely interested to see if they introduce more intersection and corner options in the future!
iv only just finished renovating a room for my lego and finally have space to display my modulars in a city style. ill be buying the new road system but will wait till there's a way that the road will work lower then the pavement. great review
I'm of mixed feelings about it I think they're relatively perfect for small city builds, for people that dont have the space to build the big sprawling cities that are more common and thats the kind of city I'm going to be building once I finish rearranging my room. And that means I wouldn't necessarily need to buy a lot of them of them either which is another plus for me HOWEVER! That being said, I could also buy a few 32 x 32 baseplates, cut them down the middle and create a mini MILS road system out of them and it would look better visually than how Lego has designed these things. I dunno, I gonna have to give it some more considering overall. As you said, They're definitely not better than the old system, but they're certainly not worse either. In my opinion you can make the best of a shitty situation and make it work for you, it just depends on how much effort you want to put it into it at the end of the da, because lets face it, Lego doesnt particularly care about AFOLs; they made these for young kids and kids dont give a shit about the same stuff we give a shit about >.>
I like the look of the new plates. Have not started a city yet but for smaller space I think it will work well. You can use them for your winter village setup next year !
Thanks for the review. I'm contemplating making my own roads with tiles on regular baseplates in studio atm. My available space is 4 32x32 baseplates deep so I was kinda looking forward to a new road system that fits on a 16 stud base but it all looks a bit funky to me as well as expensive. I guess I'll get one set to take a look at, see if I like it or not.
I am going to get them. I have limited space for my LEGO City and believe these narrow roads work Awesome for my build. I am Bias thou, because my City is all tiny cars and bikes (I don’t use cars that are larger then 6 studs wide).
Definitely great layout for kids and City sets. Lego has definitely been responding and contributing more and more to the increasing afol community, so for now I will stick to the classic 32 x 32 road plates 👍👍
i like them but i dont, i doubt i'll ever use them as i dont have a city layout but the option to selfbuild manhole covers and stuff into them is good and as for the ramp pieces, my first thought was shop awnings or maybe lorry cabs
I really like this system. I think it’s great for existing and future CITY sets. However I agree with most people, it seems like too much work to get it working with the modulars. I’ve considered building the modulars on top of the baseplate, then a single layer of plates. Then you would also need half base plates for each road, which exist, but aren’t readily available and around $5 it seems from bricklink. Not great, but the easiest way I can think to achieve this, and the plates you build could basically be whatever you have laying around so your only eating the cost of the half base plates. But I also agree, seeing it with modulars they are way too small to have a single road between two buildings, it may be nice in front of some buildings, but scaling to a larger city with intersections etc wouldn’t look right.
Yeah I think if you already have a city the size and scale of it makes a massive difference to whether this is something people will want to consider - if someone is starting out or has a small space they are interesting but for larger cities with lots of modulars it's more expensive
No the road tiles are NOT compatible to the thiner base plates widely used in City or modular building. You can put them side by side, making the sidewalk lower than the street (which looks bad) but you can not interlock old baseplates with the new roads... The base plate height is 2/3 plate height, the streets are now 2 plates high... no chance to bridge the difference except putting the streets onto a base plate itself, which does completely defeat the purpose of street plates. I will not throw out my base plates and raise my modular building collection by 2 plates to make them compatible to the new expensive ugly road system...
Although the cars look like they fit fine on their own, I'm skeptical that they'd look good with to cars placed at the opposite lanes (or just side by side). I feel like it is a bit too narrow for my taste. The coolest thing about this system is that it lends itself to better to custom roads especially in regards to elevations. I personally see these as a great addition to a regular baseplate based layout, to make bridges etc. with.
I managed to grab a set the other day and I’m generally quite impressed with the custom opportunities for making dual carriageways, multi-storey car parks, petrol service station forecourts and bridges. I do miss the curves and the pavements that the classic system have. I’ve added some of my daughters Friends sets to the new road layout and the lack of pavement makes it look incomplete. I guess this won’t be an issue if you place everything on top of baseplates and create your own space but ultimately that adds more expense and sort of misses the point. Looking forward using both systems in my layout!
Thank you for this! I think I will be converting over...if they go on sale haha. My city currently has 3 buildings, so it is not a big deal for me to switch. Can you show them to us with your raised up bookshop?
Thanks for the thorough review :)

Yeah they do offer a really good option for making wider roads if you put them next to each other, much wider than the road baseplates this way
Adding a blate under it and extending the with by 2 studs
Nice I can see make sence for side roads but I still prefer the old road plates
Good review. Earned a sub!
You can use the old one for a highway and the new just for a normal road
what is the other modular building you were using across from the diner? thanks! great videos!!
Say goodbye to street parking. Waiting now for a new car park.
I mean I might be interested in a multi-storey car park!
Also the new system allows you to create a highway or a motroway as now 4 road plates will allwo to creat 4 lane road Which was previously impossible. Sadly it would be that expensive, but I guess if anyone really builds that big of a road, then other pieces will dwarf road tiles in price.
Honestly, it's cheaper to get an old baseplate and a bag of 2x2 tiles with some 1x8 plates to the end, and xtra works with the accessories.
Those are very nice when you have small table.
They’re very good for Star Wars imperial and republic base Mocs but if I collected the modular stuff then I’d stay with the 32x32 base plates.
And likely Denamrk centric as well.
awesome idea to make a large street
As a comment. My kids have sereval houses and structures that are based on those double height plates. And they have "connectors" on them so they would click on to those easily.
Seems like they are transitioning slowly to that system as a complete modular system.
I think they are gonna be better for making an highway or causeway past/through a city rather then just replacing all the plates in peoples cities
I think this new system would be the perfect chance to add a new plate like this on a 45 degree angle. doubt they'll actually do that though
How’d you get hold of them before jan 1st?
i managed to get a pack from The Entertainer matey :)
@@BricknIt man I wish I’d known earlier, the delivery date now is January. I may as well wait until the first and collect the vip points. Thanks for sharing them though it’s been the best I’ve seen visually of the new roads. Thank you 👍🏻
I will probably be getting the new road plates to make a parking garage as they would be thick enough to work and with the studs on the bottom you can build up
To summarize:
More expensive
Look weird with the 2×4 plates
Is to tight to fit 2 Lego City trucks next to each other
Not compatible with the baseplate (that basically all city buildings have)
Not compatible with old system
There is no curves
I think you can get much more creative with the new roadsystem.
What a great video!
Lego's biggest own goal in the last years. And there have been quite some of them.
iv only just finished renovating a room for my lego and finally have space to display my modulars in a city style. ill be buying the new road system but will wait till there's a way that the road will work lower then the pavement. great review
I'm of mixed feelings about it
I think they're relatively perfect for small city builds, for people that dont have the space to build the big sprawling cities that are more common and thats the kind of city I'm going to be building once I finish rearranging my room. And that means I wouldn't necessarily need to buy a lot of them of them either which is another plus for me
HOWEVER!
I think I will go with the new system just because u can have more variety to the streets and they go well with the new 2021 city sets
Yeah they def work well with the new City sets and are great for flexibility!
I guess I'll get one set to take a look at, see if I like it or not.
i wont be using any of the lego road plate systems in my city cuz all of it will be custom and im going to use bevins bricks road design!
I am going to get them. I have limited space for my LEGO City and believe these narrow roads work Awesome for my build. I am Bias thou, because my City is all tiny cars and bikes (I don’t use cars that are larger then 6 studs wide).
these are cool
Yes!!! Thanks for reading my comment on last video :D
No worries mate :) I always read the comments :)
This will help me on my city. I have a side needs a thinner road.
Yeah they are great for giving more flexible options for cities, you can do narrow roads or double up to make wider roads
Beautiful, useful review
Thanks buddy, glad you found it helpful!
Thanks for the review, Merry Christmas 🎄
Although the cars look like they fit fine on their own, I'm skeptical that they'd look good with to cars placed at the opposite lanes (or just side by side). I feel like it is a bit too narrow for my taste. The coolest thing about this system is that it lends itself to better to custom roads especially in regards to elevations. I personally see these as a great addition to a regular baseplate based layout, to make bridges etc. with.
You got me thinking about it. Thanks for this video, Chris.
fun video
thanks buddy!
They're both good in their own ways so why not use both? Just cause you start using these doesn't mean you have to abandon the old system
Thank you for this! I think I will be converting over...if they go on sale haha. My city currently has 3 buildings, so it is not a big deal for me to switch. Can you show them to us with your raised up bookshop?
Could use the road plates for Star Wars Mocs like clone bases etc
That's a really cool idea, would work great for getting big expanses for having fleets of ships!
I can see ending up with a bunch of baseplates, the road stuck on to them, and the modulars on little stand offs also stuck to them.
I'm gonna try one set and raise the level of my buildings on that street by one stud. I'm also going to make it wider to match the road plates width.
I’m so surprised these sort of videos take off way more compared to your other ones. Still a great video nonetheless!
Ha ha yeah I wish all my vids would take off like this 😂
I am going to get soooooooo many of the new ones.
