- Building a layout is a project that brings a family together because there's something to do for everyone. Kids learn to work with their hands and about the basics of electricity, carpentry, painting, and how to create scenery. These are skills that will serve them well for the rest of their lives. Grown-ups in the family will have fun, too. We will walk you through all the steps on how to build the table from scratch.

My daughter-in-law gave me a toy Polar Express battery operated train set. It got me interested in the Electric version O Gauge train set. Needed a table. Loved that the parts needed and instructions were easy to follow. Just built it. Only add on was a set of caster wheels to make it easy to move around. 62 years old and just getting into model railroading. Thank you for sharing. Appreciate it. Blessings.
Very helpful. Thank you. I am making my son a table for his slot car track. He said he wanted it to have scenery like model trains have. This will be perfect.
Built it this weekend. Project went well. Think I should've used wood screws instead of drywall screws. All in all, it came out well. Thank you for the easy instructions.
The table turned out Great. Very easy directions and easy to follow. We have 3 American Flyers and can't wait to start setting them up. Thanks You
This is glorious, I been tryin to find out about "build a model train table scratch" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Piyaliyah Uncommunicative Preference - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is a good one of a kind guide for discovering how to build a model train railroad easily minus the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my partner got excellent results with it.
I built this one back a couple of years ago, ace hardware made all the cuts for me at the store so all I had to do was assemble it. Now I'm going to build another one same size and one shorter to make a u shaped layout.
Homasote is the best sound board to use. You will find references to it on model train sites. Lowes and Home Depot sometimes carry it but I have had to locate it a specialty lumber yards in my area. If you go to the manufacturers page they have a locator.
nice easy to follow straight forward plan.. well done
Thank you, great table!
So simple but for me it's difficult. I'll give this a try. I assume a smaller 2'x4' table could be made or any size. Thanks for the help.
Great job! It is a pity that I do not have much space. I love trains and railways!
Same i love trains to
Same
Drywall screws are the wrong thing to use for this project. You should be using wood screws. The difference is that drywall screws have thread all the way to the head. They will not draw your lumber together properly. Wood screws have an unthreaded portion at the head end and will draw the pieces together as you screw them.
wanted to say thank you for the heads up- i was contemplating which to use but your explanation was very helpful :)
What my dad does is do the frame, then the legs, then the table top so you only flip the table only one time and it is easier to do the legs before the table top cause it makes it easier to screw the top to the frame if the legs are screwed on before the top is on.
Very helpful! The only thing that I might change is make the legs able to fold up for easy moving. Thanks for the help!
So folding might be complicated, but using bolts and wing nuts instead of deck screws for the legs and supports might work for easy leg detachment and storage.
great stuff
Quick easy table thanks
Thanks for sharing going to attempt
Ancient technology or not, it’s a great table. I just built one just like it. Any recomendation for a sound board? Definately needs it. Thanks! -Puro Padre
Like the simplicity. I don’t think I can fit the 8x4 plywood in my car. Could that be cut in half and assembled the same way?
Brian I made a similar table and I couldn't fit an 8x4 in my car either, I had the hardware store cut it into strips that would fit in my car and added extra 45" cross braces so I could screw down each section of plywood on both sides for a flat surface. Table turned out great!
I have a truck so Its no problem
if you go to home depot and rent a pickup truck, then you dont need to worry about that.
Great video and very informative however I'm wanting to build a 6x8 table so I'm trying to figure out if my supports need to be 6 feet or do they need to be 69 inches in order for the table to be exactly 6 feet wide and yes I am going to use 2x4's and plywood any help with this would be greatly appreciated
looking forward to making it great directions
Good job straight foreword
Can you please explain how you put screws in to attach the 24 inchers to the 2 inch ends of the legs, you would need 5 inch screws.
what brand is the grass shaker?
The video mentions sound board but does not really talk about what it is or where to get it. Does anyone know what the video is talking about?
Its rather funny to see this ancient technology to build a train table. Things have moved on in 11yrs
What type of screws were used to put the sound board down? They appear smaller than the ones used for the table assembly.
Believe they were 1-inch screws.
I swear to god this was in a railroading documentary from the early 2000's but I cannot for the life of me remember the name of it.
Thank you! I am building this at the moment according to your instructions. Can you please tell me more about the sound board, what exactly is that please? Thanks.
You don't need it.
What would be the measurements if you wanted a 6'x8' table
❤❤
I'm worried that the table will be too heavy, especially for just one train. So, will 1 x 4 be OK? Also, what's the difference in stability by using this plan instead of the one that Model Railroader magazine has published?
Atul Ganguly It's better to make it more heavy so it will be sturdier.
Easy to build
I've got HO scale and I'm planning a table for the basement, so I don't have to lay the track (Atlas, not the Bachmann track) on the floor. Any suggestions?
I know this comment is 9 months old, but if you still need suggestions, maybe something like this? ruclips.net/video/T9MEwynhvgk/видео.html
a quick easy way is to buy sheets of plywood and folding plastic saw horses for support, no cutting or drilling needed.
I'm going to do this but for a lego train set, how much did this all cost??
I am trying to find the 1/4" sound board you used and can not locate it at Home Depot or Lowes. They have 1/2" sound insulations, but it is very heavy.
+Harris Gurowitz I know you posted four Months ago , I had same problem... I live in Buffalo, NY and they have smaller Building Supply Companies ( Lenco Lumber ) Anyways found it ...pretty expense $22.00 per sheet. Try smaller guys in your area. Best wishes.
It doesn't have to be "sound board." Many people use 1 inch foam insulation boards. There are YT vids on that.
Can you write out a materials list?
I had that train... Same thing! That's weird!!!
That's how I built mine except I did not use the leg braces and secured the legs to the longest side using two long 1/4 inch carriage bolts on each leg. I match drilled the legs and numbered them. I have a very study 16X16 L shaped layout I can walk on.
Hi! Any chance I could have a look at what you’ve constructed? I’m starting the build and like your idea
very simple
i might build this same width but 6' length for a small ho layout
Can it be bigger
Are you using drywall as your sound board, if not will Home depot have the sound board?
I would also like to know this as I am currently expanding my layout.
This sound board is called 'homasote'. It comes in 4x8 sheets at a half inch thick. I have used it before(learned from my dad). Now however I am using foam insulation sheets. Much lighter and much easier to work with. Still has the same sound deadening effect.
praing mantis do you spray paint the foam board? What color pls.
What is the measurements in centimeters please !!!

2x4s??? Man that's overkill. I have never used anything larger than a 1x4, its more than sufficient to give same the rigidity as the 2x but it ends up with a much lighter and easier to move around layout. I would even say you can use 1x3s if you can find them.
I wish they use RailSounds in their train sets today like they did back in 2003 and 2004, not these terrible trainsounds. Im not a big fan of TrainSounds as you can tell lol.
"TrainSounds" have those stupid air whistles, right? I think Lionchief has "RailSounds".
Not all train sets have trainsounds but the only train sets that typically had railsounds with the transformer were from the early 2000's. But today you would be right but back then since LionChief wasn't around, train sets came with either trainsounds or railsounds.
Idk i like the traditional air whistles.
There’s almost no grass coming out of the bottle At 3:02
How tall does this table end up being?
I believe he cut the legs 36 inches long plus the table top plus the soundboard should give you 36 1/2" of height
what do you call the green grass whatevere is that?
Woodland Scenics T1345 Turf Fine Green Grass 32 Oz
@@jessiesanchez1064 thanks, I thought it was parsley.
Me and my dad built a 6x9 table
My 8x8 layout board folds up against a wall on my lanai
I sell the plans on Ebay 'DIY PLANS for Train Board"
The year is 2021 and the train table is more expensive than the trains
Just built this today, and it cost me $150 in 2022

Don’t build a table if your gonna be modeling in o scale… unless it’s narrow gauge or tiny engines
hey! I wanted to build a train table for my dad's birthday but he has Lionel O Scale set, what would you suggest instead? or different dimensions?
