- As the automotive industry shifts towards electrification, Chinese automaker BYD is making significant strides with the introduction of its first mid-size pickup truck, the BYD Shark, in North America. Launching in Mexico, the BYD Shark is a testament to the company's innovation and strategic market penetration, amidst the backdrop of recent 100% tariffs on vehicles imported from China by the Biden Administration.
The BYD Shark, set to be unveiled on Tuesday at 10:30 AM CST, is not just another vehicle entering the competitive pickup truck market, it's a bold statement from BYD against its American counterparts. Built on the company’s DMO platform, which stands for Dual Mode (hybrid) and Off-road, the Shark combines robust performance with eco-friendly technology. The plug-in hybrid model is equipped with a 30-kWh battery pack that offers a realistic electric range of 40 miles, based on the old NEDC standard. This is complemented by a gasoline engine that extends the total range to an impressive 522 miles.
Powering the Shark are two motors, delivering a combined output of 429 horsepower. This setup not only enables the truck to accelerate from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in just 5.7 seconds but also hints at the use of the combustion engine as a range extender, a detail awaiting confirmation at the full reveal.
The interior of the BYD Shark is just as impressive, featuring a modern glass cockpit with a 12.8-inch central display, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12-inch head-up display. The integration of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ensures that drivers can seamlessly connect their smartphones with the vehicle's infotainment system.
BYD’s decision to debut the Shark in Mexico, rather than a more traditional market like Thailand, underscores its focus on the U.S. market. By planning production in Mexico, BYD aims to bypass the heavy tariffs and pose a serious challenge to the Detroit Three, offering an affordable yet technologically advanced alternative in the pickup truck segment.

Remember all of Latin America has very heavy use of mid-size pickups. We've got A LOT of competition here, and having a hybrid-electric mid-size will be huge.
I’m curios if this was the product that made the US government push to quickly to pass the 100% tariff, since BYD planned to manufacture this at least partially in Mexico and import into US

BYD will not import anything to US since that would drive US government crazy and then sanction BYD like what they have been doing to Huawei and Tiktok.
Regarding this, BYD's Executive Vice President and President of the Americas, Li Ke, stated in a media interview at the new car launch site that the target customers of this car are any global market except for the United States. She also stated that BYD is only considering markets in Mexico and other countries when building a factory, and the United States is not included.

Wow had never heard of this company. And they debuting the Shark in Mexico..very interesting . currently Mexico also has the JAC midsize truck. It’s powered by an old school Volkswagen motor and and Audi drivetrain IIRC. If that truck was sold in the US it would destroy Toyota and Nissan. The JAC is a no frills midsize truck, I would definitely look to buying one if sold in the US.

Byd are pretty big in Australia. Only selling the atto3 and seal atm but they are fully ev. The shark should sell well here.. and the Kia Tasman is also coming next year. I welcome them. Currently the ford ranger and the Toyota hilux are the top selling 4wds

every truck has same 4 tires........Just do it and go tell Ford to take legal action if there is an offense. And Ford will get hundreds of millions for copyright infringement. Ford then will compensate you millions.

40 mile range? LOL
It works like plug in hybrid can run on battery only for 40 miles but also like hybrid with only one battery. Toyota Prius prime battery range is 25 miles and then power goes down to half in hybrid mode. BYD range extender does not lose power after switching to “hybrid mode”.

Hyundai was a "laughing stock" during the late 80's in the US. By 2010, 20 plus yrs, they became a serious competitor to both US and Japanese makers. China's BYD would NOT have this same learning curve problem if allowed to compete...The ending to this plot: 1/2 of US/European autos made "abroad" would likely take huge drops in sales.....Japanese/Korean brands except for Nissan/Mazda would likely increase their shares along w/ the Chinese.....India is trying so hard to resist China's juggernaut, but I doubt they would be able to hold that line when $$$$ is at stake, given Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, would be all in w/ China's brands....
