- A decade ago social media was hailed as an organizing tool for pro-democracy rallies, giving voice to the voiceless. But it has also become a forum for conspiracy theories, disinformation and hate speech. President Donald Trump was recently banned from Twitter following his incitement of rioters, and his social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram were suspended. Correspondent Lee Cowan looks into the legality and implications of tech companies "de-platforming" a user - even a president.

Personally, I don’t see social media as a requirement. I made the decision years ago to simplify my life and delete my Facebook account. I don’t miss it.

I'm still on FB but they seem so unfair. Reporting me for my opinions but there are things posted on there that are way worst than mine. Same with Twitter. It's not fair that they suspend Trump but there are still so many accounts on there that are worst than his.

@@edyann well because Trump is the president of the United States, and Twitter is headquartered in the United States. Twitter can't delete the accounts of other world leaders, that might start a conflict. But people like you would want the USA to go into another conflict.

No, that is your interpretation. Personally, I do not want to live in a watered down democracy. Do we have Free Speech or not? Since 9/11, we have regulated speech. Also, what defines Hate Speech? More and more Republican viewpoints are being considered "Hate Speech" based solely on the premise that it is a viewpoint that the Left disagrees with. No, what is happening today is censorship and is not part of a true Democracy.

@@seth3189 I did a little checking and the White House has to ask networks if they can make an address to the public. This usually happens during primetime when advertising profits are high. The networks have to decide to air the president.
There are FCC rules that say networks must air newsworthy information and usually am address from the shooting president is newsworthy.
What happens if the networks decline?
Well they can be fined.
So how would a president get on TV if the networks declined?
The president can use the Emergency Broadcast System which is controlled by FEMA.
So the answer is yes if they needed to address the nation and the networks declined the president could use emergency powers through FEMA to take over the airways. If this happened I am sure people would be quite angry but aren't they angry already?
When the FBI has a hand in silencing voices, the 1st amendment applies. Even if it's through a private corporation.
These entities that are willing to disenfranchise our ability to share our voice, should not be allowed on Capitol Hill, to share their money for votes. This ends with us, the people... who have to research where the money for a prospective votee comes from. 3rd party donors should be banished because, We The People do not speak on their behalf...
We The People are not big corporations. We're the backbone of society... and our voice is becoming nullified.

Their shareholders decide. Publicly traded companies want people to buy their stocks. No one will buy the stock if the company is deemed risky from either a financial or brand perspective. Large majority stock owners like Blackrock have told tech companies to become more socially responsible or prepare for shareholders to vote on replacing their board of directors and CEO with people who will listen. This is business 101.

1:40 I was watching this part on TV and I noticed that they didn't include the interviewer being cut out mid sentence by a commercial when he was about to say "Because they might question" (maybe the government) This was a little after the guy getting interviewed finished his sentence where I put the time stamp. The only thing that interviewer was able to say before he was cut out was "because they m" or "because they"
No one is under the assumption that Facebook is the author of the user content.

The right to refuse service is the right of every business. Just like banks can refuse to provide you with a line of credit, which Deutsche Bank has already refused to do business with the Trumps. Social media and banks are private businesses, those who disagree can start their own platform or bank.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean spreading lies and inciting a Riot
Social media has always been the main platform of how news is spread even further, as well as certain comments and videos displayed, while voicing one's opinion. Sometimes, it's usually helpful, or most of the time, it's highly detrimental. Trump's twitter account may be permanently suspended, but there was a main reason for why it was done- inciting violence and making false claims about someone or something that had happened in his presidency, especially leading up towards his final days in office.

1) Though they are related, Freedom of Speech is NOT the same as Freedom of the Press.
2) Freedom of Speech does not exist in a vacuum. It will collide at some point with other individual rights such as the right to hold private property.
