I’m so glad, truly blessed, to have been alive and hearing so many great songs. 67 years old but still act like a fool when one of these classics catches me by surprise. Love this!
I remember Panorama using this music as a backdrop to the troubles in Northern Ireland. A solder was walking nervously down a street of terraced houses with the rest of his platoon, rifles ready to take aim at any minute sometimes walking backwards. I watched this with a mixture of fascination, and disbelief. How could it come to this in the streets of the U.K. The advantage or age knowledge and history makes me look through different eyes now.
All the songs on the original album were excellent. Too bad they didn’t continue on with more creative songs like the ones on their first album. One of those albums that I played many, many times back then and it still stands up today!
On this day in 1969 {August 2nd} Thunderclap Newman performed "Something In The Air" on the German TV program 'The Beat-Club'... One month later on September 6th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #37 and spent 10 weeks on the Top 100... On July 2nd it reached #1 {for 3 weeks} on the United Kingdom's Singles chart... Tom Petty covered it in 1994; his version peaked at #19 on Billboard's Hot Rock Tracks chart...
..."There was a madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda...You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning... And that, I think was the handle---that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting---on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a beautiful wave... Hunter S Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
I wonder what he would be saying if he was alive today with all this rioting and domestic terrorist causing all these problems . I was in the 70's and listen all generation of music but the year of all hippie stuff makes you think now days what has happen to are country to much PC bull has screwed are country big time .
Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters were in La Honda then. There's still alot of us in the bay area. We have lost contact but still practice what worked back then ✌
@@diaperboy2008 Makes me sad to know I will most likely die leaving a world that I don't like. Not much peace and love to be found these days. Peace and love within
This is a wonderful song. TC-N's original is wonderful. TP and the Heartbreakers' version is wonderful. And TC-N's 2007 updated version is wonderful. I never get tired of listening to all three of them.
Grew up with this wonderful song sadly only one original member Andy Thunderclap Newman,as for other two singing the song that certainly wasn't very professionally moving to the right of stage to sip a drink. Also where was the bass player and drummer, they must of been invisible.
@@barbaramcdonough1155 Dead right Barbara. Speedy was indeed a man of many talents. Writing, singing, ‘driving’, drumming. Loved his vocals so much. Mark
Ummm….2012? That’s 43 years after this song made it big. And the singer/guitarist and other guy standing both look in their 30s. Only the keyboardist looks like an original member.
Andy 'Thunderclap' Newman died in April 2016. The lead singer is Speedy Keen and the virtuosic guitar player was none other than Jimmy McCullough who was just 15 when the song was recorded. He later was with Paul McCartney and Wings. He died in his twenties from a drug overdose. We see Newman on the keyboard here but I don't know who the other two are.
Philip9101 Thunderclap Newman was a one-hit wonder band that was put together by none other that Pete Townsend, whose goal was to showcase the talent of Andy "Thunderclap" Newman. This video is obviously a cover or tribute band, unless Andy has discovered the fountain of youth. The keyboard player looks old enough to have been around for the first incarnation of the band however.
@@taffyjones281 Jimmy McCullough was such an amazing talent! I can only imagine what his career would have been had he not kept his hand "in the medicine jar.."
At best, it's an audition. This rendition is bang on the vibrant (cough cough) UK economy. Starts out unsteadily though hopeful, turning recession by 1.50 and full blown depression at 2.10 when Granpa Newoldman cranks up. Holy Shit Batman. The non plussed audience says it all. A nice Negroni Ta!
Well the original was in several keys. But technically there is no right or wrong key when it comes to a song and this followed the same progressions as the original arrangement. One of the guitars was probably tuned to D instead of E.
This song was so ahead of its time.. One of my very top favorites.
It's a great song. Not ahead of it's time
Thanks for this guys. Fantastic sound. 67 yr old now, & we have nothing of this quality anymore. I so wish we could go back in time.

One of best songs of its era , not impossible to like !
Fool on man! Right behind you.
Tuned down a tone to save voices, but still got the 3 key changes in, bravo!!!
Still loving this song from Australia ❤❤❤❤❤❤

There's a studio remake recording that I can't find.
Andy 'Thunderclap' Newman died in April 2016.
So sad we lost a lot of great singers
How many originals in this lineup? Great song
More like Thunderclap-New-Men! 😂
Er. What about Speedy Keen the original singer and drummer who wrote it and sadly died back in 2002.
Wasn't he Pete Townsend's Chauffeur also? Pete kinda managed them and did produce their album because he recognized Keen's talent in writing.

And Pete later admitted (in the book with the Quadrophenia 4-CD + Blu-ray set) that he co-wrote the song.

It's not the real thunderclap Newman

This video is obviously a cover or tribute band, unless Andy has discovered the fountain of youth. That's because he is Said Mr Newman, who played piano on the original, along with Speedy Keen on vocals and Jimmy McCullogh on guitar!
Agreed if Ringo was the last Beatle he could perform as the Beatles with someone else singing their hits which is sacrilegious .

Wrong key
Well the original was in several keys. But technically there is no right or wrong key when it comes to a song and this followed the same progressions as the original arrangement. One of the guitars was probably tuned to D instead of E.
The piano solo is in the original key (C), although the timing is way off. But the verses don’t modulate as they do on the record. So what.
Imposters. How can they use the name ? Terrible singer
Who do you think is on keyboard??
