The Tower of London is an easy three hour or so experience. If you aren’t interested in much other than the Jewell’s it is a waste of money, but those who enjoy history can certainly get their money's worth in time and exploring. I’ve been three times now and still find it fascinating. Although, the first couple of occasions it was £29 or so… not £34.
Those busses though!! Worst of the lot. Uncomfortable, cold and can’t see the sites on the opposite side as someone usually stands in the way to get a picture. Better just getting the tube to the nearest station and walking to them.

  • @mads5015

What on earth?! The Tower of London is brilliant! One of the best historical sites I’ve been too in the world in my humble opinion and I’ve travelled to every continent bar Antarctica. You hardly went to anything in there. So many interesting historical characters passed through- the armoury exhibition is incredible, the Bloody tower, torture exhibition and crown jewel exhibition are excellent and lots of information . You can do beefeater tours and see the ravens too. And they do seasonal exhibitions.
If you are looking for real tourist traps I’d say avoid the Clink museum, it’s very small.

You didn't give the Tower of London a chance. Did you really not walk through all the levels of the central White Tower and see all the exhibits? The aquarium IS very pricey, but it's also very well done by the look of it... and they have to feed and care for all of the sea creatures, and keep all the habitat clean and safe for them, so I can easily see where the money goes (I have never been, TBH, but it looks like one of the better aquariums in the world). The Eye and the Shard are total rip-offs. Both big nopes from me. Have a web search, and you can find other free places to go for a good view. The Tower of London is truly a must-see for history buffs, but you did yourself a massive disservice by not joining one of the tours led by a Yeoman Warder. Those blokes are hugely entertaining, and they give you context for what you're looking at. Advice for any tourists enjoying Ed's video: go early to avoid crowds and massive queues to see the Crown Jewels (I've personally never bothered, but that's just me!) If you are a true hardcore history nut, you can attend a Ceremony of the Keys, but you need to book well in advance. It's a quick ceremony (happening 365 nights/year for centuries), but a cheap way to get a small taste of the place, and very spooky at night. Again, the upkeep for such a massive ancient complex is mind-blowing, so I feel it's worth it to go at least once. Hard Rock? Meh. Tussaud's doesn't appeal. Never done the bus, but I suppose if you only had a day in town, it's an easy way to see highlights. Thanks Ed! You always make me smile. I'm glad you found that lovely little clown fish. BTW, I was taking a work-break... can you tell I didn't feel like rushing back??? Thanks for indulging me! ;)

I really, REALLY hope you didn't pay seperate tickets for The London Eye, Madame Tussauds and SeaLife. Because they are all owned by the same company, which does offer multi-attraction tickets. With tickets as low as £60 to do all 3 attractions, still a bit expensive. But not as expensive as buying admission for them all seperate, and also closer to "what you would've paid for"

  • @ukstarlight05
    @ukstarlight05 Месяц назад +11

Tickets to most of these places are less expensive when purchased online. I did Maddam Tussauds and Sea Life Aquarium for around £40.... totally worth it!!! The aquarium is INCREDIBLE, the displays are visually stunning, the variety of animals is impressive, and there were plenty of staff on hand that loved telling visitors about the animals.
The Tower of London was also worth every pence, I spent about 4 hours there and had lunch at the Cafe overlooking the Themes. It helps to have an interest in history.

The waxworks has dramatically improved since the 1970's, but I still wouldn't pay the high price. I was in London early in the year, and I loved that the best things in London are free. The museums are incredible and free. I lived in the National Gallery, and the British Museum is incredible. I also loved that I could find the remains of the Roman Wall (free), walk over the Tower Bridge, and around the Tower of London (free), find Execution Hill, walk around streets with a view of St Paul's (free), explore the docklands (free), find where famous people like Turner and Jane Austin lived (free), enjoy the oldest pubs in Wapping (cost of a drink) and enjoyed reasonable priced lunches at MacDonald's, Burger King, and KFC. I went to supermarkets for ingredients for dinner and breakfast.

I do generally agree about the eye, but to be fair, it depends on what you are doing it for. I took my elderly Dad on it a few years ago when he was just about mobile. We pre-arranged his visit. They took really good care of him. My Dad used to work in central London as a policeman, policing Parliament out of Cannon Row. He had not been back to London in over 20 years. He could see all of his old work buildings and told me lots of stories. We were very fortunate with the weather though so had perfect views. He still occasionally mentions the trip on the Eye that we took. So for me, it was worth every penny.

Love the concept of this video! With traps like these I always tend to value them at what it ideally costs to run them. Jewels sitting in a display that you walk past? They’re paying for what there? A wax museum with a ride, theatre, probably a solid aircon bill? Makes a bit more sense. Usually aquariums make the most sense, especially with a wide selection of animals, due to upkeep and whatnot… but they’re still so expensive and once you’ve seen one they’re all fairly similar.

Trick with the shard: Just go to one of the bars/restaurants near the top. More like £8, and that's for the price of the drink.

A lot of the things are so that kids have something to do. There are so many brilliant historical sights but the aquarium, Shrek, eye, Leicester Square etc are to get the kids enthusiastic. My only advice about London is - don't do someone else's holiday. If the Eye is something you always wanted to do ... then do it. Yes there are free ones but if it's on someone's bucket list ... they can decide if it was worth it. To me, two of the best free things are the Mithraeum and the amphitheater at Guildhall but it's not too interesting for kids or people who want to go there on a pub crawl.

The Historic Palaces annual pass makes visiting the Tower of London worth it, as you get Hampton Court, Kensington Palace as well.
I always like to visit the Tower and just do different parts of it each time.
Forgot to mention the fact you can get a joint ticket with Madam Tussaud’s, the London Eye, Sea Life Centre, London Dungeon and Shreks Adventure, bringing the total cost of it down. Or just get the Merlin Pass for unlimited visits for the year if you travel up often. If you’re paying each separately then yeah, the prices are bad for what you get.

as a londoner I've never been in any of these places except the aquarium, because they are all too expensive and when I went to the fish place it was £17 no penguins then, but they did have a weird sort of fish petting zoo where you could touch the fish and there was octopus in that petting fish bit.

Why don't you do a follow-up video on all of the free things in London & how much they are actually worth. The Natural History Museum, Museum of London, National Gallery etc. You could even throw in some parks & gardens. I honestly think the free stuff is so much better than any of the tourist traps (although I do actually like the aquarium). 😊

I used to take foreign students to Tussauds. I hated it. One day I came with three coachloads from Suffolk. 150 students. I had a cheque for thousands. There was a mix up and no record of our booking. I asked if we could go through as we were regulars, rather than queue for hours in the hot sun. The said no. They couldn't care less because it's a gold mine. I took the students to Covent garden instead and returned the cheque to the school. Biggest rip off in London.

The other ironic part of the Tower of London is you can do just about everything but see the Crown Jewels without a ticket? I went a year and a half ago and wandered around the grounds and what not without paying anything. Don’t remember if I saw the torture part without paying or not, but a fun stroll.

I liked the big bus, if you have mobility issue or want to optimize your time is good, it takes you to the main places, give you a quick brief about the place, if you get the 3 days ticket you have walk tour and a night bus included, was very good to go around with my dad that don’t speak English at all ❤

When I visited the Tower of London I was also 25 years old. I absolutely loved it as I am very interested in historical places. When I visited my entry fee included a great walking tour. Did you take that? In my opinion the Tower of London is a definite must see and worth the price if admission.
I would not consider the Aquarium to be a tourist trap either. I liove a good aquarium! I don’t mind the costs as I know it requires a lot to maintain everything and keep the animals healthy. This too is a great educational experience.
The Hard Rock Cafe and M&M store….skip those.

The wax Musium is certainly looks interesting. Worth it if you have a merlin Pass. Same with Sea life. One thing to note with sea life, you can go to Chessington and have sea life, a zoo and theme park attractions for the same price.
The London eye, is a landmark.
I don't like your assessment of the tower of London, its expensive but does have the history to reasonably back it up.
There are other options like Winsor castle, or a English Heritage or National Trust membership. Where you can so somewhare with the history but less tourists.

While I mostly agree with your review, I just don't understand how disappointed one can be about the Tower of London. The building is massive, you can walk almost anywhere with different displays in each part. The main tower in the middle is a fascinating expo of old items, the crown jewels are cool, the walk on the walls offers really nice views of the shard, the city and the London Bridge and the place itself is really cool just to wander around. didn't you have also people in historic costume walking here and there ?
And bonus : the M&m's shop I didn't it existed. My wife and I came nearby one night and it was still open, not many people, we didn't buy anything but just visiting the shop was fun enough.
What I most loved about London ? Walking around near Buckingham, the Mall, Trafalgar square, Soho, Westminster... We did so many things on foot and... most museum are free ! National History Museum, National Gallery, the British Museum... It was a blast. It's been 10 years, but the memories are forever.

Whenever I go to a new city, I always get a 2 day hop on hop off bus ticket so that I can see as much as possible while getting to different places. Yes, it’s expensive for what it is, but when you consider that you get to see the whole city and get off and explore more whenever you want, I don’t think it’s too bad.

I've been to the top of the shard, there's a bar up there to extract even more money from you. there's also a bit of glass floor hanging off the edge so you can cry like an infant in front of everyone.
    Probably worth £15 at most.
But hey it is the tallest building in Europe so at least there's that.
