JudgeMathas I might get laughed at for being a filthy RPG Peasant or something, but I still can't get over Oblivion. I just love the game, janky and god-awfully ugly as it may be. It was one of the first RPGs I really ever played, and together with Fallout 3, made me absolutely fall in love with the open world RPG setting! I still remember hating how they dumbed down so much of the RPG aspects of the series when Skyrim was released...A feeling I'm still stuck with to this day...Graagh!

Well it's not 'true fantasy' I have a deep love for Phantasy Star Online. For a more traditional fantasy Final Fantasy Tactics.
Now if only maybe one day we'll get a Fantasy version of Mount and Blade.

Pretty accurate review. I think both you and Mandalore Gaming summed up one of the main problems I have with the game - along with the main reason I still haven't finished it: the combat. I swear, no matter how many times I tried to get the hang of it, the enemies' hitboxes either fuck me over, or didn't register a hit on my end. The kicking is also a problem I experienced. On the one hand.... well just watch the footage, it's amazing just kicking enemies into traps and pits! On the other hand, I counted NUMEROUS times where the I kicked an enemy, only for him to either dodge it due to a hitbox issue, or just stagger and not fall over. Coming from a guy who also specializes in melee combat, it's disappointing to see it like this.
Another problem I'm kinda surprised wasn't mentioned is that the bow isn't a weapon you'll be using often, even if you're a non-mage character. 60-65% of the action is taking place in either tight corridors, or small areas where it wouldn't be usable, not to mention the LACK of skills you have for the thing in the first place. The only time you will ever use it, is for either Rope Arrows, which actually are handy, and where the game happens to place you in a large area. Now I might finish it one day, but it definitely won't be because I enjoy playing through it or excited on how the generic story ends, it's just to say "I did it".
Call me a casual or whatever, but I much prefer playing Oblivion over this game any day. That game's also dated and I definitely have nostalgia bias to a degree, but at least Oblivion kept my attention throughout the story and actually made me feel invested with the world around me.

Gothic II, which is another game that didn't succeed but grew a cult following. It's been praised for its inmersing and alive world. A review of the game would be relevant this days, since Pirahna Bytes has just released Elex and a huge new mod for Gothic II, History of Khorinis, is almost completed.

As to my favorite RPG, I had pop up on Steam the other day a game that I had forgotten about, which I played for many hours. The Wizardry games kept my D&D self entertained for many games without the need to any others to play with. In fact Wizardry 8 , which I didn't know existed just appeared in my Steam queue.

Classic Fantasy RPG? Either Torment or Baldur's Gate 2 (BG2 swallowed a good portion of the time I should have been spending on my GCSE's, after the Iron crisis erased my first 3 years of high school)
360 era? DA:O (a shame bioware never made any games after Mass Effect 2, would have loved to have seen a second Dragon age game, sadly it never happened)
Xbox One era? Witcher 3... Duh, loved the original (hell it's a PC game that I bothered to play after 2005, that alone is testament to how awesome it is)
With the 4k X1X upgrade it is sweet as... A very sweet thing.

i mean legacy is alright, but considering the age gap between those titles, it wasnt what they were by a long shot, but yea i love the franchise up to today and enjoy going back to it, coz of the stories hidden and the interlaced arcs within; stretching much like ES over many centuries too, just more visibly and notably so, and in that sense i prefer it, coz it makes me remember the rpg or strategy campaign of the previous installments (i mean just look at heroes 2 handing into might and magic 6; it's so good)

When it comes to fantasy I still haven't found anything to top Planescape: Torment. I love the truly open-ended nature of it (something I never felt was the same in fx Baldur's Gate). I love the totally dreary world it takes place in and I also love the small quirks of it (mainly Morte). I am also a huge fan of Morrowind. And if we're talking time spend that takes the cake. But when it comes to the world and the enjoyment I had while playing Planescape is it for me.

  • @CazadorSlayer

The first five seconds pretty much summed up my entire playthrough of the game. I remember playing through the game real quick when I found it in a friend's steam library, back when the whole 'family library sharing' thing wasn't a complete and utter pain in the bootyhole. (If it's even a thing, I haven't checked in awhile.) Man...All I can say was it was a whole lotta fun for a quick little casual playthrough. Of course, it certainly helped that I have a deep-seated love of viciously kicking enemies to death...Darn you, 300!
To this day I can't help but wish Oblivion had a combat system like an improved version of what this game has. I absolutely loved Oblivion, and I still do...but hot dang was it's combat just silly...Of course, Skyrim didn't improve it. At all. Sigh...I'm still salty that Bethesda removed the Unarmed skill tree and dumbed down a lot of the RPG aspects of Skyrim...Grumble Grumble...
(Why Bethesda, why you gotta make Unarmed Combat better in Skyrim but remove the skill for it so it's useless!? WHY, BETHESDA!? WHYYY!?)

My main gripe with the combat system in this game is that it falls apart the moment you aren't fighting against a humanoid enemy armed with a sword.
Fighting against spiders and beholders sucked and zombies and ghouls were only slightly better.

I had such fun playing DMoM&M back in the day. My only complaint is that it felt a bit rushed at the end. I was so ready for more, but the game abruptly ended. Still, my personal Game of the Year 2006. Honestly, I like that game more than Dishonored (which I still like, just not as much).

  • @AndrewJHayford

Its sort of like going back to a game that introduced mechanics that are super common now and seem old and stale. At the time, this level of environments manipulation was almost unheard of....particularly in the "fantasy rpg/lite" genre.

Favorite fantasy RPG... this is a tough one. I'm more of a J-RPG kind of guy and most of the fantasy RPGs I played are really old school ones (like, the original Bard's tale series on the C=64) that aged absolutely terribly. The one that does stand out for me is Planescape: Torment; I looooved the writing and the characters.

@@josephkeen7224 Awful meele combat which involves just spamclicking (the biggest difference and downgrade after Dark Messiah), predictable story (that betrayal mid game was obvious from the start), game starts by reusing the same map in the second mission, teleportation skill is easly abusable and destroys the whole balance of the game, the way you have to play the game is restricted (either you dont kill anyone or you get a bad ending, no matter what you might feel towards the enemies) and a little bit of false advertising (the devs said its gonna be a steampunk game when the source of power in universe is whale oil for some reason)
