- Pilot Vlog 170. I fly the airlines to Nassau, Bahamas to pick up a Cessna Caravan 208 and fly it single pilot IFR back to St Louis. To clear customs we land at Fort Pierce Florida and due to thunderstorms land at Tallahassee and spend the night before flying the rest of the trip the next morning. ATC is included in the video.

Great work Captain! Another fine AeroVlog™!
Comment 10/10
Big old cranes - 2.5/10
Come on Capt, some of us love them big old cranes too.
I’ve watched this video multiple times. I really enjoy when you fly the Caravan.
Good view of the leading edge slats on your outbound commercial flight.
Altogether, a huge chunk of time in the air! Caravan seems sort of slow and steady compared with the Citation! Impressive storm clouds - huge rain shafts.
Wise to stop over - not surprised you were tired!
Glad you made it back OK Jim and beat the storms. Another great video - take care.
Thanks Chris. I wish you could have seen it in real life. It was an attention getter.
I like your Caravan Cessna 208B Flight Video you are sympathetic
Did you start dancing at 10,000 feet? - good stuff. Good call on the night stop. Great video.
Thanks Rob. Sterile cockpit below 10,000' Above 10,000, dance party.
My favorite video of all that you do. I’m a prop guy. Well done!
Enjoyed the flight Captain. Stewardess never ran out of beer.
i love the caravan i wish cessna could my a version that go retract the gear btw good job captmoonbeam love your video
Thanks. That's an interesting idea, a retractable gear Caravan.
One of your best Jim.
Thanks Sam.
Great video
I'm not used to seeing caravans without the cargo pod it looks weird to me 😂
Hey Captain, We have a full motion Caravan sim and I enjoy your cockpit video. Our sim is a RedBird with the G-1000. It will not slow down on an approach. I notice your prop and fuel levers are both forward and you carry some power into the flare. We can't do that. It's idle power with full flaps at 3 NM and still a job to get down to landing speed without floating 2,000 feet.
What do you use as a checklist. We have none. What we have came off the internet. Have you heard of a checklist company called qREF.com? They have a Caravan checklist that I would like to buy. Keep up your great videos.
sorry captain, you and steveo need to come and visit my world as a fedex caravan pilot. what you showed me in this video, i pray for on my departure from CDC to LAS during the
monsoon season. Typically i have six to eight T'storm's going up to 50,000' plus on my departure. I've seen on my route , over the last 20 years some of the most widest weather ever. How about
a microburst, hitting the ground at 2,000' and curling around to 14,000'. I have been inspired by the both of you, to video some of my cool weather encounters. Kept up the good work. Hope to post some cool videos this summer, nothing like some lightning going down the side of airplane and along the top!!
Vance, Steveo had problems with the FAA flying for Watermaker and they made him take all his videos of those flights down. I wouldn't want to run afoul of the FAA, or FedEx for that matter.
I used to fly night freight single pilot so I know where you're coming from Vance.
Very cool video! I am just starting flight school next week, even though I am 36 yo. I already work as a freelance illustrator and art teacher, so I have found your advice to look for alternative sources of income quite interesting, specially in my age (also because I am marrying in 3 months). Anyway, to me this video is a teaser of the little adventures I could expect as a pilot, along with the incredible views and the constant strive for excellency in piloting. Thank you sir for inspiring me in this career and congratulations for the quality of the video. Wish you great flights. Cheers from Brazil. Subscribed.
Thanks Freddy. I wish you well and the best of luck in your new career.
Only 36! Well, you've got 40 more years to go young man, ;-)
I am the guy flying "471" in KTLH!! I knew i'd recognize that call sign!
Hope you guys had a good flight.
Love all of your videos. would you mind to make a video how you came in to aviation and if you have some tips for new pilots? tks and greetings from EDRY.
I've got both of those somewhere in the 460 videos I've made but, I should do another one.(I can't remember which one it is)
I used to die a little inside when a Caravan came to our airport and I had to fuel it. If an airplane ever needed single point, this was it.
I think single point should have been a standard feature.
Excellent advice.
Thanks.
This seems much more simple to land and start them my Paramotor :)
Love the over the shoulder video, it came out great. I was also pleased that you took the easy way out and spent the night vs having git-home-itis.
OTS reveal a moustache trimmer needed for flight bag
Thanks. It was nice to get some rest.
Add to flight bag. Check.
73? who can sleep in that heat!
10:46 mark. Did I see lightning?
Yes you did.
Does he work for Ivor?
Does your company have overflight?
Yes we do.
Did you ask the first officer if he inspected the fan blades on the CFM-56 you were sitting across from? JK
I see the captain of the Chinese Airbus that had the first officer sucked half way out of the cockpit window got paid about $300, 000 for being a hero the article stated.
All the rest of the crew got lesser amounts
..even the F/A's
Amazing, eh.
Stephen Bond
I was kind of surprised by that. Do they give pilots in the United States huge payouts like that when they handle an emergency of that magnitude?I don't think they do....
KentB27 not that I've ever seen Kent. It just seemed like kind of a big PR stunt but the way it was reported it had to add up to about 1 million dollars! Maybe it's all in food vouchers!
Contrast, Sully probably got a few days off but had to handle all the interviews, etc.
Stephen Bond Yup sounds about right. In America and I would suspect most other parts of the world it’s just treated as the crew doing their job. They might get publicly recognized for their actions and receive an award or two but that’s about the extent of it in most cases.
First time I've ever heard of it.
And in the end he got retired. Good thing he didn't reach 65 the month before.
First
You gotta love the,Caravan.
This was such a great video, I felt like I was watching a movie and couldn’t look away for a second. I really liked the editing. It’s fun seeing you fly the caravan from time to time, it’s a little more relaxed.
i falll a little more in love with the caravan each time you fly it!
I love it also.
I might take it over just about anything...love big pickup trucks.
Anyone else catch the lightning bolt at 10:45
I did.
I find myself binge watching all your videos almost everyday... I've been a subscriber for years and love sitting right seat with you on every video! Love the videos and keep them coming!
I love cessna 208. The best thing that you can set the stabillity trim to T.O. and the plane will take off for his self.
Great example of knowing your limits and respecting the weather. Awesome job as always. Best regards, John
Thanks John.
Love watching your videos. You're the man Capt. 800+ hours myself looking to fly 135 in the vans after college. Junior now. INSTA, COMM ASEL. Keep it up! This one was especially fun for me.
Thanks Davis, Sounds like you're on your way.
“If you’re going to be a pilot it’s good to have an alternate source of income.” And a strong bladder.
When flying alone..... have you ever put it in auto......and used the John.....curious...
I had that exact same thought. I'm not even sure if the caravan has a lavatory or not.
That's what the 'Pilot's Relief Tube' is for. People who fly single pilot learn early that you don't eat food that goes right through you, and you don't drink lots of fluid. There are devices for urine capture, but unless you're all alone in the airplane, most pilots prefer not to use them.
Gary C Devices for urine capture....Aka an empty Gatorade bottle. Haha.
We do have a potty under the right aft seat but , no I haven't.
H Gary. Unfortunately this aircraft doesn't have the relief tube, which surprised me.
you're the best vlogger I've found! no clickbait.
Great cameras and editing. I think this is your best, Cap. Threading the needle through those clouds and the two storms on the horizon on the landing were so pretty. And, there are Caravans, and then there are Caravans. That is a beautiful one. I see why you like to fly it. Thanks for taking us along with you. More, please.
Thanks John.
Love your video and that beautiful Oasis interior.
Where do your passengers stow bags? What kind of mounts do you use for your two cameras?
Thanks for putting in all the work it takes to produce such a watchable video.
Thanks. The passengers I usually carry seldom have more than a couple of gym bag at the most. The two aft seats in back have a net that locks in place so that we can use that area if needed for bags,
Excellent Video! Every time I see a "V" Tail Bonanza I always think of the crash in Clear Lake Iowa: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper". It was at 16:14. Without seeing the registration # I'd say that the Bonanza was definitely from that time period, maybe a little more recent. The song Good Morning Star Shine was a number 3 hit in the USA in July of 1969. ☀️ (=
I love that song.
John, I am thinking about getting in to a flight school. Use to be an A&P in the military. Done with that own my own Trucking company. Now want to get to what I love the most and that is airplane. Any tips
Does it make you feel uneasy flying overwater with a single engine aircraft?
I had a bullet proof PT6, life jacket, raft and 60's pop music. Why would I feel uneasy?
Didn’t know the Cessna Caravan has glass cockpit, last time I was flying over the Grand Canyon, the Cessna Caravan I was in was pretty old and has only analog gauges.
this one is about two years old. The newer ones have the Garmin 1000
How much on average does an annual cost on the Caravan ? In 2022. Nice video, I enjoye it.
Old video I know. But I love the 208! I also learned to fly out of Fort Pierce.
I love that Caravan. Flew it in the Alaskan bush for years,
So, if you had a co-pilot would you have or is it o.k. to fly a non stop and not make the stops you did or does it really matter either way?
Even if I had a copilot I would have made a a stop.
The big windows of the 208 give a great view in your videos. Great camera placement too.
Thanks.
18'48'' I've never heard a stall warner sound like that before
Haven't seen a captmoonbeam video in a while. Missing them
What level of micro burst detection does this aircraft have any..? Just wondering. Have a wonderful Christmas!!!
None. Thanks Bossa and you have a great one also.
Top notch camera angles on the Caravan 👍
'Thanks.
14:41.... no way you can be part of our family. We have ac the house at night at 62.....
I'd look funny at the diner table wearing my winter coat.
I learned the worst way that you need to have other source of income when working in aviation. Missing the caravan ):
Sorry to hear that. Hope it worked out.
Lol did anyone else hear the old Sioux plane on the tower frequency?
I didn't
captmoonbeam it was a call sign that ended up in November Delta
Man , you just slicked that on the run way like a real pro. Wait, you are a pro. Lo. Well done, and thumbs up on the update. Thank you for sharing. You guys should sign up for Uber Air Taxi. I'm sure there was someone going your way. $$
Thanks Donnyboy
Sometimes you just need to get some sleep better to sleep than be a statistic
I noticed the inertial sep closed fro take off and landing, I'm a new Caravan pilot and I'm wondering if there's any specific reason? I'm flying in Alaska and for our op we do below 1000' sep on and all times on the ground, but we also have a lot of crap on the pavement around here
That' makes since with the type operations you're doing. I'm always operating on a clean ramp and runway and often at high temps.
Love the videos! I enjoy the process of the trip and how you operate! Keep it up
thanks Daren.
When you fly commercial, do you tend to rate/judge the pilot's performance? If the pilots of a Southwest plane became unable to fly, could you land the plane?
At this point unless I'm in a window seat I tend to ignore what's going on. Yes, I think I could.
What kind of watch do you wear? which weather app do you use?
Seiko. Fltplan.com and my radar.
Aeronautical Decision Making at it's best.
thanks,
Awesome video! But what kind of monster without OCD does it take to set the temperature to an odd number??:)
LOL:, I't seemed like a good idea at the time.
I do the opposite in my hotel rooms. That number has to go down!
I think that's what most people do.
Jim, is it easier to communicate these delays to the owner since he's also a pilot? I imagine so but wanted your take.
The advantage is that he understands what you're talking about. The disadvantage is that he understands what you're talking about.
So what do you put on your tax returns as your alternate income source, because IRS didn’t like “gigolo” on mine. :-) :-) :-)
Google and some part-time flying.
Very cool video!! i like your judgement!
Great video Capt love sharing your travels & love the gopro views : )
Thanks.
When the Caravan is fully fueled what is the range it technically can fly..?
The one we fly has about a 900 nm range. But, that can vary depending upon weight, altitude and winds.
Why disconnect Batt. For parking overnight?
It’s secures the aircraft and prevents a dead battery if something like a baggage light is accidentally left on. On some aircraft a replacement battery can cost up to $8,000.
Whats your side job Capt Moon?
I didn't know the TCAS gave audio advisories.....
Very good to have those alerts
could have ran into Steveo1kinevo
I'm always looking.
When I first saw a Caravan in a video, I thought it was ugly. But since then, I have fell in love with the awkward looks of this machine. Kinda like Uma Thurman. Beautiful. But damned if you know why.
2 questions: 1: I see you have a cap from a helicopter company. Do you have any rotary wing time? 2: When was the last time you flew anything that was powered by avgas as opposed to jet fuel? I love your videos.
I don't have any helicopter time But, I worked 10+ years for a helicopter company that had a few jets. 4 years since I last burned avgas.
@@captmoonbeam Thanks for replying so quickly. After I posted it, I wasn't sure you would see it since it wasn't until then realized it was a video from almost a year ago. I guess pretty soon, you will be bringing the Caravan back to St. Louis again
Surprised I never saw this video until now. See what lockdown does to you. Went back and forth with the first couple of minutes as I reminisced. Love Bahamas flying. Done the Ft. Pierce customs far too many times back in the day.
Nice video.
Love seeing N1Q it always looks factory new :)
I really like the paint scheme.
Amazing aircraft, such a clean. First time i see cessna caravan equipped with abundant avionic.
It's a very nice airplane to fly.
Hello captmooonbeam, I love this aircraft. Amazing aircraft.
Video quality - 10/10
Audio quality - 10/10
Commentary and snacks - 10/10
Flying skills - 9.9/10
Final Score - 9.9/10!
i was so close to a perfect score. Maybe next time.
Did you ferry fly it for Airchoice one?
Well I`m a little flabbbergast about your advise on having a "proper job" aside being a professionell pilot... may I ask you; how long ago had you being forced to "work" to get the bacon on the table...? I am asking in honest manor cause this is a major concern to a lot of people getting in to aviation... me my self have survived flying and getting a living out of it by manage my own company in aerial photography despite in the age of drones. But that wont cut it for most... love your videos, no criticsism on that. Only wonder how bloody hard it is to survive as a corporate pilot...
Thanks. I think part of my perspective comes from being self employed as a contract pilot for six years and losing several jobs due to the companys I was working for failing. One of those situations was totally unexpected and the flight department was gone in one day. There are lots of good corporate Pilot jobs that will take you to retirement. But, some do fail and so do airlines. Pilots lose medicals. I'm just advocating that people diversify their income by doing something else on a part-time basis. In my opinion that something would be some type of self employment where you have more control over your situation. When I've been between jobs I've done contract flying, instructing and temporary work. Twice I was flying in less than a week and never got a chance to apply for unemployment benefits.
@@captmoonbeam -- Flight simulator 'test pilots' at CAE Simulation, ain't all that bad. Just a thought.
Was that 60's on 6 on Sirius XM?
Got to love tthe Caravan. I sure do.
Great job & Vlog as always. Can I purchase your used Bose headsets if possible?😅🙏
Thanks. We keep them till they fall apart.
@@captmoonbeam No worries. Otherwise keep the vlogs coming. Just getting my C208 rating done for my first job here in Tanzania. Thankful.
Cheers
A lot nicer than the 1998 Caravan I'm flying jumpers in. And it has an autopilot!
this is the only one I've flown. I thought they all had autopilots.
It did at one time. Stopped working, got snagged so the owner pulled it out. We use the machine for flying skydivers.
Do you find that the Synthetic Vision increases your confidence in 1MC or is it just nice to have?
I lean towards it's just nice to have.
What was your cruising attitude from Tallahassee to St Louis ? I miss flying my own plane watching you. 1970 PIPER PA-31-310. N116GW.
I think it was 10,000
Sort of a Brian Lecomber reality novel. You're not smugglin' krugerrands, are you? Which reminds me, what's your favorite P-Factor theory? :)
Thanks. Give that P-Factor some right rudder.
How much input trim is fed in over how long? That is, presumably you don't want to spoil your airspeed building unnecessary drag with a single overly acute increment. When do you know the balance of all forces is right and airspeed won't budge upwards any more cos you've reached the performance limit for current engine settings at altitude? By the way, that scenery is something else!
20:30 I've recently started using the Bose A20 with the G1000 in the Phenom and I have to use manual squelch with it. I had the same issues you're having!
It was a little frustrating.
I have the same 2016 Caravan, N627EM, similarly equipped. The automatic squelch is horrible. Thankfully, the manual squelch adjustment is easy and works beautifully. I hd totally forgotten about that problem until I saw your video!
Great example of ADM!
6.3? *Laughs in survey pilot* A Gatorade bottle is your friend. Not to drink, of course, nasty stuff.
Which is why he made two stops before calling it quits in Tallahassee!
Well, okay, one was for customs, the other for fuel and weather, but you can bet he used the bathroom both times. :)
your one of my fav. air guys and girls but you flying 19 hours a day is not enough for my youtube needs lol lol step it up buddy lol
I’ll send a memo to my boss, “Jim needs to fly more.”😀
@@captmoonbeam cool, if you ever want a co-rookie let me know lol lol
Fly safe, love your videos
Another nice one sir. Like the weather shots, and I could watch a whole video of that Boeing wing working it's magic.
Thanks Ron.
I enjoy your Caravan videos greatly! Have been watching them during quarantine. 👍
Ok sir we can definitely bond due to that exact temperature I like to set, LOL
Great video. The caravan looks like a solid plane. Looking like I'll be in one eventually. Thanks for the vid
The wife and I got a chuckle at your comments while filming that thermostat. 64° is pretty chilly! This nearly 200 year old house gets that way when the temp outside goes below 50°. 64° wouldn't work for my wife, either - she uses a heavy down blanket all summer long! She's shivering at 73°, hahaha! I'm the opposite - I'll sweat buckets. 😂
That was a bad place to build a sewage treatment plant! I guess that's an incentive to do everything RIGHT at that airport! 😁
Love the video, Captain! You come across as calm and relaxed - all perfect pilot qualities. 👍
Thanks Smitty. It definitely wasn't the scenic approach to Tallahassee.
HAHAHA! For sure.
How do the call signs work ? The Cessna is 1 Quebec and this plane is 2 Quebec. Can you request a sign or are they assigned like number plates for your car ?
Well, like your car license plate, you can request a custom 'N-Number.' For instance, if I were buying a plane in the near future (I'm not) N916GC is currently available. I would probably choose that because September 16th is my birthday, and GC are my first and last name initials. Although it's already taken, if I was looking at buying a Cessna 421, I would have also liked to have had N421GC, for the airplane type and again, my initials
You can do a search of the FAA registry site to see who owns what airplane, just by N numbers. However, that's only for U.S. registered aircraft.
Great video! Must be nice flying the caravan strictly pavement to pavement.
The colors on the over the shoulder shot are great what camera are you using for the view? GoPro 6?
the GoPro 5 for that shot. The side front shot was a GoPro 4
