  • Today i make quite a sad video. The van's first MOT is here and unfortunately, its not gonna "fly through" like we wished, but instead would turn out to be our most expensive mot yet! Costing £2000 in welding repairs. Join me as i take you through, exactly what went wrong with the van...

    Welcome to Taylors Aboard a Campervan, our sister channel to you guessed it Taylors Aboard a Narrowboat. On this Channel, we're be converting our new, well new to us 2005 Peugeot Boxter. which we bought to replace our Renault Kangoo, which is too unreliable, uneconomical, and small for Dad to sleep in. This van was an ex-school bus, with only 80k miles on the clock, 3 new tires, a new exhaust, But most importantly it starts every time and doesn't have a fuel leak. The two big problems with buying an ex-school minibus are, one, it came with 14 seats in the back that we have to remove and try to get rid of. two it has a speed limiter on it. This van is so big we can all sleep in it, allowing us to travel to beautiful places far and wide, like Scotland and Wales, whilst staying in the van. So join us as we convert this ex-school bus into a beautiful family camper, from electrics, plumbing, and gas to building 3 beds, a kitchen, a dinette, and a toilet all into a 6ft by 11ft box.

    So sorry about the van. I hope that by going public someone in authority will check into this garage. Anyone else who has been scammed by a bad MOT should contact authorities. This is a terrible thing to do to someone.

    Sorry to hear about the problems, someone has said about going to trading standards they will find out what has gone on. In the past we have used them and they are very good. You should be able to get to the bottom of this, these MOT stations have to be at a certian standard and they are inspected as far as we know. Hope you can sort this out so you are not so much in debt. Pat & Peter

      Yep, at least it's safe. Once it drys up, we're going to underbody seal it

    Bad luck with the van Josh. It's a a horrible feeling when you have been scammed. My first car, in 1969 when I was 18 was a 1960 Triumph Herald, it had a new MOT and was found to be almost terminally rusty a couple of months later. My dad went to the garage that issued the MOT and all they could say was "we are a reputable garage". Fortunately the guy who sold us the car, got it fixed (after my dad threatened to punch his lights out!).

    Hi Josh that reminds me of our old for Escort in 1978 my dad took it in for the Mot near Lymington those cars were built rusty
    In those days the rust was extra, anyway in those days if you lifted the carpets you could see the road anyway the Mot garages loved a hammer and chisel so dad walked home with the steering wheel in his hand he said she failed it and this will be collectable one day as it was easy to carry the car went to the scrap yard so out came the exchange and mart to buy a rusty Rover gosh Josh if you could have seen the cars in the 60s dad bought a 1948 Austin 10 for £28.10 shillings mind you that was two weeks wages in 1965 but even then Mots were a cars horror film but those days there was no sorn so we would have at least 2 cars for spares of road great times a time for wheel kickers but don't kick the sills 😄

    I bought a 2004 Fiaf Ducato for £1000. It passed my first mot, but failed the second on corrosion underneath. A year later with less than 20 extra miles on it, it failed big time on corrosion. With £4200 spent on welding, it passed. Those early Fiat, Peugeot, Citroen vans are notorious for underbody corrosion. They weren't meant to last twenty years.

      Wow, and I thought our cost a lot! That's exactly what I was saying to my dad. The companies that made the vans couldn't care less about the van after its been bought and paid for.

      ​@@TaylorsAboardaCampervan The bodies of the Peugeot and Citroen were all produced by Fiat, and inserted their own choice of engine. A few years later they treated the chassis against corrosion, so the newer models are much less prone.

    Hi Josh what's strange if dads van was a 1983 model there is No MOT for 40 year old vehicles
    Also tax free. Classed as a classic vehicle
    Some Volkswagen now are classic s
    I love looking on Auto Trader as in running costs it shows rhis information !!

    Sometimes in life, people take advantage of your situation and rip you off....the first welder sounded like he did not know what he was doing...all the repairs should be mig welded and the correct gauge steel used..hopefully now you have a few years motoring...if I still worked in the motor trade as a panel beater would have repaired for you 👍👍

      Yeah, it looks that way. Anyway, we're going to underbody seal the whole lot in the spring, that should preserve it for a few years. Thank you for the lovely comment
