Scotty, nothing wrong with German leather, you've gotta put hide food on it to stop it drying out. I've got several old mercs with great leather inside.
That's right. On newer cars, when you leave the car out in the sun on a warm day and and return to the car after an hour or so and you can " smell the leather " That's the oils in the leather drying out..
I recently bought an 04 clk for $2000. Top had been down for 7 yrs. Top Hydraulics rebuilt cylinders for $1k. The car is perfect now! But it’s not for non mechanics!
I have a 2005 Ford Explorer and it has a 4 liter V6 in it. It has decent power and 158,000 miles on it now. I think whoever had it before took good care of it. The only downside is getting about 18 MPG.
This is very true. Never seen any combo like my M112/722.6. Car itself is dented and seats torn, but I get people who understand this, offer me cash for the car even with 229,000 miles… in reality, the engine and transmission are barely broken in.
I toured the Stuttgart plant in 1971...The workers then were all Turks and Yugoslavs...The German's were doing the technical jobs. Good lunch in the chow hall.
I had the White paint with the blue Convertible top 430 CKL. It was a 2002 and it was a one owner from Miami Florida and was bought brand new one the interior from my Mercedes was 2 tone dark blue same color as the Convertible top and also was the AMG Package and had 375 HP factory and it had every option you can think of. Thank you Scotty you are the best Mechanic around on RUclips.
I bought a 2000 E430 171k miles for $300. I didn't do 1 thing to it, and sold it for $1000 a couple weeks ago. Only warnings on the dash was a low washer fluid, and a blown bulb (right front amber corner marker). Was "a fun knock around car."
@@tati-anaroseee4316 That 1 actually found me. Lady saw my wife walking in town, ask if she'd like to buy a car? Wife said sure. What kind, and how much? Weekly trips from Central Kentucky to Indianapolis. The best deal I got was in 2020 my '88 TOYOTA 1 Ton Box Truck. $1700 and absolutely nothing wrong with it. 2.2R-E with 151k miles. Local mom & pop grocery store was going out of business and selling everything. I got that truck and didn't look back. Scotty I’m shocked!! A Mercedes you actually like? At last!!! The transmission sounds like it could very much benefit from a conductor plate replacement and fluid change.
Two changes within 2000 miles would be best. It's very important to reset the oilcounter with a scantool afer each change to prevent slipping. So the transmission will relearn the new values.
I’ve got 194,000 on a 2006 C230 V6……. To go with my (original owner) 1981 Mercedes 300SD with 275,000 miles…… and a 2003 C230 1.8 Supercharged Coupe…. Only 95,000 miles on the odometer. All are great if reasonably cared for and no car payments or high insurance costs. If I can find a $2,500 20 year old 120,000 mile CLK convertible I’d grabs it, get it detailed, put seat covers on and have another toy. Just sayin’ 😎😇😜
The 3.2 v6 the 4.3 - 5.0- 5.5 V8 aka M112 M113 engines are world class top notch. Love Scotty and his channel, but stop Benz Hating ..the old ones were better built than anything US ever made .
Hey! Scotty, I have a 2000 Mercedes Benz W210 E320, my car still drives like a dream and has never let me down. It accelerates like a devil and everything still work. I love my merc.
I just got an 2004 E46 330 Convertible as a gift and everything works w 112k. I wouldn’t keep it except for the fact that it’s a six speed. Wouldn’t trust it for long trips, but it’s going to make a great toy. Drove it back from the coast with no issue.
W211 E klasse is also very good, good engines are the M112 engines (e240 and E320) but also the E500 (V8) is very reliable engine. The 2002 and early 2003 has rust issues at the back fenders to the front of the rear wheels. Not a big deal if you ask me, but it is there. Idk about the diesels but the E220 diesel is the best i think or the E320 Cdi.
My mother has this same car but with the V6, identical modular design to the V8. Scotty is right, 300k miles later and the car will fall apart around the engine which continues to run. If you're mechanically inclined or have a good mechanic that won't charge a fortune to maintain it, these CLKs and E-Classes from this era are a good value into the Mercedes brand. Just make sure you have maintenance records!
I got a 1998 Jaguar XJR, perfect interior nearly perfect exterior. No rust anywhere, purchased it for $4000. Not bad for a 4.0L supercharged V8. I love my Jagggg!
As Seth mentioned below, the transmission issue is likely the conductor plate. Fixing the conductor plate is a cheap fix. This is a great car except for the mouse excrement. Also, MB Hydraulic Fluid for this car is the same as CHF 11S (which is much cheaper). BTW, I have owned an SLK 320 with the M112 V6 engine (which is the V6 version of the M113 V8 in this CLK 430) and the very strong 6-speed German manual transmission for almost 10 years and 43K miles - it now has 102K miles. I have only had to replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor, MAF sensor, drivebelt tensioner pulley/drive belt, electric fan control sensor, gas cap, battery and three of the five hydraulic cylinders (I asked the shop to replace the trunk cylinders when the others were replaced, however, they said it was not necessary at the time). I use my SLK 320 as my daily driver - it has very reliable for the most part. I need to replace the seat relay (or simply re-solder the contacts) and the trunk hydraulic cylinders (of which I received replacements from Klaus Witte of Top Hydraulics) in the near term. There are quite a few Mercedes models that were manufactured with the M112 and M113 engines which can driven daily at a reasonable cost if one avoids those models that have the distronic braking system, airmatic and active body control. P.S. I have been following your RUclips Channel for quite some time ..... very informative and entertaining.
I had an old Jetta that would do that. It took forever to figure out what was wrong. Ended up being that somehow a drop of fuel every now and the would shut computer down. It would evaporate and run great again. Not saying that is the Mercedes problem
I've always liked the look of this car and I get some nostalgia. I had a few hot wheels versions of it. Also the CLK GTR comes to mind with this headlight taillight look...Need for Speed 4 High Stakes.
Maybe it’s a good idea to get a hot wheels version of this car and keep it on table to look at. My child used to love hot wheels very much when he was toddler, and we/I used to buy him a lot of those.
The older foreign cars are beast, I had a plain jane 1980 Volvo DL, 2 dr, beige, 4 cyl, I drove that car everyday for about 2 yrs, only did oil changes, tune up, brake pads and exhaust muffler.. Had it up north, Pittsburgh, summer, winter with 3' of snow, car went everywhere, it was a tank.
The 240D's of yesteryears in the 70's and 80's could get a million miles with regular maint. And no major repairs. Made in Germany and maintained there.
Spot on review Scotty, I love this car and I’m glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves. Also the limp mode is the throttle position sensor it is a very common fault.
OBD on this model has two ports; the main port is the 38 pin under the hood. It's also a lot faster and it will go deep into all modules, including transmission. The OBD standard port is limited and the reason it's present is mostly for the emission testing facilities. Cheers. The car is fine, but it needs a lot of love. It deserves it; don't go el cheapo !
Hey Scottie it’s the PCM! He can get an up to date version or solder more metal on top of those flat bubbles on the motherboard! So the electric current can circulate properly. Outside of that .. cam shaft sensor or crank sensor
Scotty I know I'm on the wrong video but I got to tell you I have a 2010 Mitsubishi outlander on my downstream oxygen sensor for the manifold, it was acting up you talked about that Royal purple I bought it I put it in better acceleration the light went out and works like a champ thank you very much for the info from valley Vista California
Very cool Scotty, I'm still working on my 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee I paid 400 dollars for. It now has new tiers, new coil and complete tune up. Putting new radiator hoses on tomorrow. It now has just over 170,000 miles and runs great. If you do your own work you can make them last.👍👍👍👍👍👍❤🇺🇸
Just bought one of these today with only 78k miles on it. Paid about 9 for it, so maybe not a great price, but I don't think I was ripped off either. Soon as I saw that 'made in germany' sticker, I was convinced it was worth it.
I used to have a CLK 430 coupe with the AMG package that had about 175k miles and never had many engine issues, that thing was pretty bullet proof. I kind of regret selling it now
Common issue assuming it is smooth in Neutral or Park. Everything in the car is super heavy so engine mounts wear down every 60k or so. I am replacing mine today. Cost for the two OEM mounts is $100.
My friend had a clk430 they are the best beater mercs of the 00's. It's one of those cars were 90% of it won't be working and it'll still drive down the road
I had a clk430 coupe. It was a great car ! I picked it up for next to nothing and drove it for 2 years before someone offered me more than what I paid for it cash.
I had a 2002 CLK 430 Mercedes Benz back in 2009 and I found the sticker price in the glove compartment and it cost back in 2002 it went for a $100,000 brand new and it had the AMG Package and I paid $15,000 cash and the dealer wanted $22'000 and the engine puts out 375 HP AND yes it was a great car.
Yeah these cars are a true bargain and absolutely robust I got my clk 320 for $2900 and a clk 55 with 67k miles for $4000. Both of the cars drove perfectly fine just minor cosmetic wear!!
I got a 02 Mercedes clk320 also made in Germany but it's with a v6 almost 200k miles only problem I have is the sunroof is off track, passenger seat doesn't slide forward/backward and my valve gaskets and rear main seal drips a little (a quart every 3k miles) I get almost 21 in town and 29 on the highway
V6 229,000 miles: Had same issues. Replaced valve cover/breather seals and all hoses for intake manifold. Went from hesitant to instant acceleration and gained 2 seconds on 0-60. My passenger seat won’t go back…seat only goes forward. Thankfully there are 3 preset seat settings that work fine. The switches are downfall but easy enough to replace.
I had a 1996 Honda Accord LXi hatchback. Paid $700 Unreal how much room when seats are folded down The 5speed made it punch ✊👊 Fast forward ⏩ to the day a car on black ice slid into its bumper and tossed it down & across the street. His insurance company said $2,000 value but we don't want the physical car so $1950, you keep it? Deal!! I drove that car back to the east coast from Colorado. Yeah, I'd buy one TODAY!!
These are super bullet proof cars actually. The 300 350 and 500. The 550 not so much. The transmission is actually super simple to fix on these and the actual transmission rarely fails.
I recommend w210 e430. At the around 10k for the car and all deferred maintenances it will give you a fantastic ride. It does not have air suspension, no ABC, no SBC, but has all safety features and stiff body. Though rust and small electrical issues are something to be taken care of.
This guy is the perfect neighbor, no more trips to the mechanic shop, just go around the fence and call him with a ice cool beer and ask "what's my car problem" 🤘🏼
If he wants to pretty it up, look on EBay for entire oem front rear seating and door/side panels. He could probably getting entire interior for under $1200 shipped
Hey Scotty. I had a 2005 mercedes E500 4 matic. Absolutely the best driving ,ridding car iv had ( next to 1974 Cadillac coupe Deville)at least until i took it in to the shop to have tires put on oddly when I picked it up the engine with 63000 miles was making a knocking noise. After questioning and spending another 500$ they say can't find anything. So I take it to reputable MB dealer another 500$ bent rod. Got estimates for repair and replacement then off to a euro sport shop for second opinion no charges but the same diagnosis and estimates. Ended up trading.
🤣 I'm rolling around in a 13 yr old impala with a v8 and it has 180k on the ticker and it's still ticking.... That may be lifter tick I'm not sure, but it still works.

That's right. On newer cars, when you leave the car out in the sun on a warm day and and return to the car after an hour or so and you can " smell the leather " That's the oils in the leather drying out..
There have been mice living in this car, gnawing on the seats and nesting in them. But sure the leather is bad because it is Mercedes. logic
I recently bought an 04 clk for $2000. Top had been down for 7 yrs. Top Hydraulics rebuilt cylinders for $1k. The car is perfect now! But it’s not for non mechanics!
The 3.2 v6 and 4.3 V8 (same motor just 2 more cylinders) were the last of the reliable easy to fix Mercedes. Built like tanks. Any 320 or 430 models.
I have a 2005 Ford Explorer and it has a 4 liter V6 in it. It has decent power and 158,000 miles on it now. I think whoever had it before took good care of it. The only downside is getting about 18 MPG.
CL500's
500 models were good too
I've owned a clk 320 and a clk 55 both are w208 the 5.5L is just a bigger 3.2L but very much the same engine!
This is very true. Never seen any combo like my M112/722.6. Car itself is dented and seats torn, but I get people who understand this, offer me cash for the car even with 229,000 miles… in reality, the engine and transmission are barely broken in.
Duct tape and wire ties can fix anything in the state of Kentucky
Same is true for Oregon as well. Have used those items several times.
Embarrassing, but the two right license plate screws broke off rather than coming out...and the left ones frozen also. Need to work on that.
I have a 2000 clk430. Love it and not too hard to work on either. Too bad Mercedes did not put manuals in these. They are fun.
Love my CLK 430 coupe! M113 engines last forever as do the 722.6 gearboxes
No beauty covers were harmed during the filming of this video
I bought a 2000 E430 171k miles for $300. I didn't do 1 thing to it, and sold it for $1000 a couple weeks ago.
Only warnings on the dash was a low washer fluid, and a blown bulb (right front amber corner marker).
Was "a fun knock around car."
Where do you find them so cheap I can't find a running car in general for less than $3k here😂
@@tati-anaroseee4316
That 1 actually found me.
Lady saw my wife walking in town, ask if she'd like to buy a car? Wife said sure. What kind, and how much?
Wife called me, ask if It'd be a good deal for $300. My reply was, I can junk it and get more than $300.🤣
It was a 2 owner beater Benz. The 171k was all highway miles.
I don't want to sell it, so I tell people wanting to buy it, I'll take no less than $10,000 for it.
Now if they're willing to pay $10k....
@@colonel9990 wow idk if it's luck or what but I never get any of those 😂 I am happy with my c class I got for $3k tho but $300 sounds a lot nicer. I've also been looking for a small truck to take up the mountain and go camping with my friends and my dog, they've gotten beyond crazy on pricing 😱
Fantastic and fun review Scotty!! I always enjoy your videos
@@asdf-dt4bh conductor plate is a known issue on these transmissions. Cheap part!
Anyone know procedure for clearing oil counter? Haven't seen it on scan tool. Will try google.
My w210 as well. just hit 200000 4matic
Didn’t mention about how much you spent to keep it running
@@jpnphom5470 I only spend money on servicing it every 8000 km, has never given me any problem.
I have had some good 2000 era e320's as well.
Ive never fixed anything. It was also the cheapest AWD car I could get. I was very pleased after buying it.
The legend speaks.respect!!
Afternoon Scotty! 🏁
afternoon!
"still has regular power steering pump" ...points at oil filter 😂😂😂
He is right i still have my clk430 i bought in 2003. 2 air flow sensors and thats it. Great car worth the 30,000 i paid for it
I have C350 4 matic with 167k miles still running like new I only changed fuel pump and tires
I just got an 2004 E46 330 Convertible as a gift and everything works w 112k. I wouldn’t keep it except for the fact that it’s a six speed. Wouldn’t trust it for long trips, but it’s going to make a great toy. Drove it back from the coast with no issue.
I drove a 99 e 320 sedan 4 matic in 2003 one of the best sports cars I've ever drove in
W211 E klasse is also very good, good engines are the M112 engines (e240 and E320) but also the E500 (V8) is very reliable engine. The 2002 and early 2003 has rust issues at the back fenders to the front of the rear wheels. Not a big deal if you ask me, but it is there. Idk about the diesels but the E220 diesel is the best i think or the E320 Cdi.
Keep up the great work Scotty! You are awesome! Love your diligence.
You know wot I like best about you, Scotty? You get right to the topic immediately and don't dither around leading up to it. You are da *Best*!
Even neglected versions of these M112/M113 engines paired with 722.6 can often be refreshed easily enough.
And nfs 3 HP
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 for me 😁 yeah I love this car
The older foreign cars are beast, I had a plain jane 1980 Volvo DL, 2 dr, beige, 4 cyl, I drove that car everyday for about 2 yrs, only did oil changes, tune up, brake pads and exhaust muffler..
Had it up north, Pittsburgh, summer, winter with 3' of snow, car went everywhere, it was a tank.
The 240D's of yesteryears in the 70's and 80's could get a million miles with regular maint. And no major repairs. Made in Germany and maintained there.
That godly m113 v8 engine is 🔥❤️
Spot on review Scotty, I love this car and I’m glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves.
That Mercedes is a gem.
Too bad it's not manual.
Hey Scottie it’s the PCM! He can get an up to date version or solder more metal on top of those flat bubbles on the motherboard! So the electric current can circulate properly. Outside of that .. cam shaft sensor or crank sensor
That's a good Mercedes! Some of these have lots of rust though. But yes it's a cheap toy😂
Am not a mercedes fan
But I love the old models
I'd fix that up for what the owner has in it. Pick up wiring manual and trace ETC wires.
Sweet ride
If you do your own work you can make them last.👍👍👍👍👍👍❤🇺🇸
Mine had one code , missed shift, added 4 qts ,runs perfect, yours might be at 3qts low of fluid,, same rear drive
This has been my thought. Ordered an actual dipstick from autozone to hopefully provide level marks.
Just bought one of these today with only 78k miles on it. Paid about 9 for it, so maybe not a great price, but I don't think I was ripped off either. Soon as I saw that 'made in germany' sticker, I was convinced it was worth it.
No doubt. Switches are biggest weak point… go easy on them and keep liquids away from them.
Just sold my 2001 CLK320 which I bought in 2008; best car I ever owned and was still like brand new at 260 000kms.
I used to have a CLK 430 coupe with the AMG package that had about 175k miles and never had many engine issues, that thing was pretty bullet proof. I kind of regret selling it now
I had a 2005 CLK cabriolet. Beautiful car, was always getting compliments on it. But it did have its gremlins.
This was a fun video to watch!!
I almost bought one of these for the same price but it had 190,000 miles on it and the engine would shake at idle. Overall a great cat tho
My 1999 Clk320 is still like new at 80,000 miles. Cost me $8,000 7 years ago.
I had a clk430 coupe. It was a great car ! I picked it up for next to nothing and drove it for 2 years before someone offered me more than what I paid for it cash.
Never thought I’d see Scotty recommending a Benz . Times have changed . Finally he realized
The same engine in the E500. .... practically indestructible
375 hp? Yeah right. That’s more than a CLK55 AMG and nearly as much as a CLK550
Yeah these cars are a true bargain and absolutely robust I got my clk 320 for $2900 and a clk 55 with 67k miles for $4000. Both of the cars drove perfectly fine just minor cosmetic wear!!
Hope u doing well Scotty! Nice video !
Interference engines should be illegal. A timing-belt is a weak link in any engine, but it is criminal in an interference engine.
That engine is the best ever, good reliable engine wish it another 200k.
Probably more reliable than the v8
V6 229,000 miles: Had same issues. Replaced valve cover/breather seals and all hoses for intake manifold. Went from hesitant to instant acceleration and gained 2 seconds on 0-60. My passenger seat won’t go back…seat only goes forward. Thankfully there are 3 preset seat settings that work fine. The switches are downfall but easy enough to replace.
Mad respect to Scotty for this.
The CLK500 (M113 engine) is even more powerful, about the same efficiency, and more reliable.
Best channel in RUclips history 😁🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
If I came in a car dealership and he was the salesman. I buy a car from him. I wouldn't be taken for a ride. We need more like Scotty!
I have a 2092 clk 320. Great little car. The hydraulics for the roof are shot, but you can pop it manually with a 10mm.
There is a 38 pin port in the engine bay which is where you should "REALLY" scan for codes.
I had a 1996 Honda Accord LXi hatchback.
Paid $700
Unreal how much room when seats are folded down
The 5speed made it punch ✊👊
Fast forward ⏩ to the day a car on black ice slid into its bumper and tossed it down & across the street.
His insurance company said $2,000 value but we don't want the physical car so $1950, you keep it?
Deal!!
I drove that car back to the east coast from Colorado.
Yeah, I'd buy one TODAY!!
Scotty brt ti si moj idol! Best regards from Belgrade/Serbia
You're crackin me up Scotty ...
Afternoon scotty!
afternoon!
These are super bullet proof cars actually. The 300 350 and 500. The 550 not so much. The transmission is actually super simple to fix on these and the actual transmission rarely fails.
Literally my favorite car. Shocked you made this video🖤🙏🏿
I recommend w210 e430. At the around 10k for the car and all deferred maintenances it will give you a fantastic ride. It does not have air suspension, no ABC, no SBC, but has all safety features and stiff body. Though rust and small electrical issues are something to be taken care of.
Safety features? No doubt! It is a tank in disguise.
That was a good deal. Beautiful 😍
love it when you go crazy on affordable older nice cars...
2001 clk 55 m113 engine still rollin love my car
Have the same model car, restoring it after sitting for 12 years. Any major problems to look out for to catch before it worsens?
It’s a fun weekend car, leave the top down, just enjoy it…lol !!
Great video! You're the man Scotty!
German car worth buying: VW beetle (the original one… made in germany)
Amen
Scottie, you never get old .
A lil Panzer Tank Wagon... Not gunna lie... I want one of those.
