The reverberation reminds me of an online recording I heard of his "Hymn Of The Cherubim" (Liturgy Of St. John Chrysostom). Like that work, it is out of this world...almost choral, as has already been commented upon.
I'm playing this in my highschool orchestra! Movements one and two, my favorites. I don't know why I don't like the third movement. Maybe because it's not exactly slow or fast, the in between. Either way, Tchaikovsky and Shosty are awesome! Keep it up you Russians.
I love Catherin's Palace, Vaganova Ballet Academy organizes there beautiful graduation balls each year and rector hands out diplomas to students. Such a wonderful place, nice for a concert too.
What has always mystified me with beautiful classical masterpieces, is that when you close your eyes, the musoc seems to elevate and become so much more than the sum of all the instruments. It's hard to put into words. It's a heavenly sound.
The composer asks on the score for a full-orchestra instrumentation. H. von Karajan did that in his recording at DGG. But this chamber-orchestra interpretation recoded in a BIG room with a rich acoustic characteric gives a celestial feel to this piece. Yum to me.
The reverb is certainly heavy, but there is no audience to absorb sound. Personally I would love to attend a performance in that beautiful hall with those very talented and attractive young performers. Perhaps some day I will get the chance to visit St.Petersburg and enjoy some of the attractions of that fascinating city. Spasibo!

Well, he had lots of money coming from patronage, but he suffered with his sexual orientation. He was the opressor, so to speak, Tchai regarded himself as an aberration, a freak. The high quality of his work never oscillated, but is a well know fact that he lived a very sad life. Fake mariages, depression, etc He suffered a lot.

I think it is safe to assume that although he suffered inside, he must have lived for something to some point at least. I mean he had, to some extent, Iosif Kotek and their relationahip (despite the fact that in his situation and his own fears of him self it probably brought even 'more' tension to his mind). I guess my point is that despite his rather neurotic nature he was probably in persuit of some happiness and looking for how to enjoy life. (Even though in the end, most still believe that 'he' was the one to end it).
This interpretation is an incredible definition of beauty and pleasure. Thanks to the musicians, the conductor and Tchaikovsky. Thanks simply for living

I first heard this as a small introduction to the segment on the history and later Soviet restoration of the Catherine Palace on an episode of National Geographic Documentaries (S1987E04). I fell in love with it. I just stumbled across this and it was like reliving that initial thrill as a kid again. We made this video at the personal request of Eduard Alexandrovich. Olga Vladislavovna Taratynova, director of the Catherine Palace, responded to the hero's request and helped in organizing the video filming. The string quartet "Amfir", the chamber orchestra "Carpe Diem" (art director Raisa Ulumbekova), conductor Pablo Marqués (Spain) and Nadezhda Kuznetsova (organizer), St. Petersburg, Russia - with love took part in the concert!

the recording is awesome!. Who is the conductor and the string orchestra? There is a little echo. Like in a real cavernous hall. As for his affliction, there was no respite for him in his time. Hence the psychological trauma that became more intense with the passage of time. Maybe the recording was made in this large hall to reflect his psychological trauma - the never ending mental torture represented by the echo. This is not only a magnificent piece of music, played so well and used to represent the man and his personal traumas.
It is Saint-Petersburg Chamber Orchestra Carpe Diem, conductor - Pablo Marqués Mestre. The place was chosen by request of the baron Eduard von Falz-Fein, he helped a lot in the reconstruction of the Amber Room of the Catherine´s Palace. That´s why we made recording in this place
