I met will accidentally at a Music Store in Danbury, CT.. He got into talking with me in the store and asked me to step outside the store so we could chat a bit more. He actually said to me "There's The Beatles and then there's everyone else."
Whether you're a world renown musician or just someone playing guitar in their bedroom, we're all mesmerized by the Beatles and their unmatchable body of work!
I could not agree more with what Will said about the Beatles. There is so much hyperbole when we talk about the great artists of the past, but in the case of the Beatles, it's not exaggeration. Their evolution from neighborhood skiffle band, to hard working club band, to recording covers of their favorite songs, to writing their first songs of their own, and then the unbelievable progression of their musical style (all of which broke from accepted conventions and moved the consciousness of kids like me to new realms) was astounding by any measure. A Hard Days Night, Help, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper, the White Album, Abbey Road, Let It Be. Every single one of these albums not only broke new ground, but birthed a new musical genre in perfected form. After you heard each album, you were changed. It rearranged your mind and maybe your DNA because you were never the same person musically again. Now we look back on all these albums as classics but most people who weren't there when they were initially released take them for granted. But the sheer creative power the Beatles showed album after album after album, bringing totally new music into being, was and remains unparalleled. It was magic for those of us who were there to witness it. And may I just say for those who like to pit the Rolling Stones legacy against the Beatles legacy, please just shut up. The Rolling Stones were a great band and one of the longest running concert bands in history, but comparing the artistry of the Stones to the Beatles is like comparing Andy Warhol to Leonardo Da Vinci. Even Stones fans would admit that much of their output was schlock. They didn't define genres, they chased whatever genres were popular. They were, and to some extent still are, a great band with a lot to be commended for. But they were not in the same class as the Beatles. Nobody is, and perhaps no band will ever be. As Will says, the Beatles produced the greatest musical legacy of the past 100 years. Thank you for the wonderful Will Lee interview. He said everything I feel about the Beatles and said it better than I ever could. I'd love to hear more. You should interview him again. I'm sure he has much more to say.
Sounds like you’re the one pitting them against each other William Gray. Preemptive strike, or what? Checkmating incase someone does make a comparison? You’re really holding on to a lot of past bitterness it seems to me. I love both equally on their own merits, on which, neither could out do the other. Why couldn’t you just say that?
Until he said it, not one word was uttered in the comments on this video, not one. I said here Steve, and didn’t mean anywhere else. I’m plenty old enough to know as much about this “rivalry” as much as anyone. The truth of which is that it is, and always has been among the fans and critics instead of the artists, because it is they who make these comparisons. Which in my opinion are Juvenile and pointless. I’m not trying to belittle anyone. He made a statement and I replied in kind. If Joe takes issue with something I’ve said, I’ll respond, and I’m sure Mr. Gray is perfectly capable of defending himself.
I was so lucky to be able to perform on the same stage with the Fab Faux and Will Lee in Liverpool at the International Beatleweek. Will was very friendly and a regular guy. Happens to be the best bass player on the planet.
Wished I would have seen you Jim...amazing moment...I've never had the chance tosee Fab Faux play live..but I did attend Guitar Music School at the same time..and got to know and play w one of their members , Jack Petracelli
Thanks again, Joe. Great interview. The first time I saw Will was on Dave Letterman when he sang and played bass on Macarther Park. Been a fan ever since.
It is so odd and so wonderful. Four lads from a working class town in north-west England . Struck a match over 60 years ago and that flame has never been put out. I still get chills hearing Will singing McArthur Park on the David Letterman show.
I’ve watched him on the Letterman Show nut know nothing about him. But I’ve had a great respect for him. To do what he does, shift without any effort from one genre to another effortlessly is an amazing trait. I say ‘trait’ because it’s in his persona to love a vastly huge amount of different music that he’s absorbed all his life that he knows what each song requires. And it’s not just technique. It’s the love for the song that also needs to be given it. His passion for The Beatles is quite obvious. Thank you another great interview Joe. Now, onto part 2! Robert

I was able to see Will 3 times when I went to see Letterman. Once at Radio City, twice at the Ed Sullivan Theater. First time at the Sullivan Theater (Will was playing a Hofner) I kept staring at the stage thinking about February 9, 1964 and the history that was made there that night, elbowing my cousin every two minutes telling him. History that would alter my life and I didn't even know it. Maybe because I was only seven. Next time during a commercial break, the band with Will on vocals played the great Bill Withers (RIP) song Lovely Day. Will nailed it. Oh yeah I kept staring at the stage, I remember it was around February 9th. Difference this time, I was elbowing my girlfriend who along with my step daughter has had to endure my Beatlemania for many years. Was hoping to finally see the Fab Faux the spring at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY, incredible concert venue, but Covid took care of that. Enjoyed the interview. Keep Rockin' Joe.
Hah! I saw them 3 times too, once at NBC at the other 2 at Sullivan. Either drove or took Amtrak up from VA. I'm a huge Dave fan, but the sound in there is so good it took me by surprise. I couldn't help but let my mind drift to 1964.
Great interview. Always liked and respected Will Lee. His playing always seemed to drive, yet underpin whatever was being played. He could do anything.
I was watching Sullivan that night in Feb. 1964 when the Beatles changed the world. There was a radio station (think it was out of Cleveland) played only Beatles for an hour every night. Listened on my little transistor radio in E. Tenn. The Beatles are unique in that no two songs sound alike. Love your interviews, and just subscribed.
My wife & I met The Faux their first year together at The Basie Theater in Red Bank NJ, the first of 23 more different venues we saw them in. I always knew about Will, cause he does a lot of studio work plus him playing on Letterman. I know he’s a great bass player, but listen to him sit down with an acoustic Martin and do Blackbird. Incredible musician.
I met Will Lee after a Fab Faux show and he told me about how George Harrison showed him the bass notes to Something. Will Lee is a real gentleman and a great musician.
I love Will Lee. I also found a band out of the Netherlands called " THE ANALOUGES " . They are right up there with the FAB FAUX. But they have to do everything in a second language. Makes me appreciate them even more. They are on YOU TUBE. You just have to do a simple search. They have the original recording notes from the studio work on exactly what instruments were being used. And they use those exact instruments. Going as far as to get a Mellowtron that was the next serial number next to Paul's. They performed SGT. PEPPER in it's entirety on the 50th anniversary. Also THE WHITE ALBUM. Both are on YOU TUBE along with a documentary on how they find instruments and break down songs note by note. Watching the documentary and hearing them speak Dutch. And seeing them perform in English astonished me. Got me more interested in what they do. Give them a look.
George Harrison is one of the most under rated guitarists in rock history (along with Malcolm Young.) --- A distant cousin of mine, Steve Landes, is "John Lennon" in the Beatles tribute band "RAIN". --- Trumpet was my first instrument, my hero was Al Hurt. Till I heard Muddy Waters on the AM radio in 1963 and fell in love with blues. Later that week I bought a used guitar at a garage sale and started to learn to play.
Uh, no, George Harrison was not underrated. WTH are you talking about? Do you know what underrated even means? People toss this idiotic word around in every single music related video on RUclips. Good grief, every musician in the world is "underrated" according to the YT comment section .
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum I don’t always comment but I love your videos and your style of interviewing. Many could take note. Your passion for music and genuine interest and knowledge of your guests is second to none.
This interviewer is great. He always sits back and lets the musicians talk and when he does comment or ask a short question its almost always the same thing I'm saying at home (right after "Wow!" haha) and the same question I would've asked
" Id have to have one if i were me" Priceless and here's to as much top donations Jo can amass from the topper most of the popper most, and best of all the unsung heroes, so much soul a pot of grits hovers as these memories come to life 🎶
I played as John Lennon in a Beatles tribute band and it was so cool singing harmony with the other guys. It was really fun pretending to be the beatles. Great interview Joe 👍🏻😎
How a very to be an ultimate Beatle fan and being able to play with one of his idols and then end up playing with Ringo, and playing on John Lennon and Ringo' s album. His doing a cartwheel on stage and tell the front row and yelling to them " I'm in Beatle Heaven ".A very lucky man.
"This Boy" certainly follows a standard Doo-Wop chord progression, but the lyrics and perspective of the song are different and pointing to a new realm of pop music. It's a Doo-Wop template but sounds new and original. It's hard to explain. The song has the elements of talent and genius!
Not true that the concert Will Lee was referring to was the first concert by George in London since the roof top concert with the Beatles. George played the Prince's Trust concert in London at Wembley arena in 1987.
@@LateShowBottomEnd Hi, Will. I enjoyed your many years on the Letterman show and your devotion to all things Beatles. I can't play guitar for sh*t, but I'm a karaoke singer, and I do about 100 Beatles and solo-Beatles numbers. I'm a Beatles fan from the very beginning in 1964 at age 9. I still remember "Thank You Girl" being played on AM radio in my hometown of Montgomery, Alabama.
@@LateShowBottomEnd Hi Will, This was a very informative interview. I had no idea that you were such a busy session player and that you played with George Harrison. I so thoroughly enjoy The Fab Faux, you guys blow me away with your accuracy on every single Beatles tune I heard you guys play on RUclips. I discovered you guys quite by accident. I have always admired your bass playing and I had no idea you could sing really good too. I've watched a lot of Letterman reruns on RUclips and you and Paul Shaffer and who was ever in the band at the time with you two were always incredible - you and Paul were there from beginning till the end. I have a question and I'm sure you're probably the right person to ask this question. I have made some recordings of my version of Beatle tunes that I want to put online, and I am sure you had to go through the process of licensing the Beatles songs The Fab Faux have online; could you please be so kind and tell me how does one go about getting licensing permission to put their own version of a Beatles tune online? And unlike The Fab Faux (great name) I am not trying to make an exact replica of Beatles songs, my versions are very different from the original Beatles version, and I think you would be blown away if you heard my versions of Beatles songs. If you could please post a link to who I can contact about licensing Beatles songs I would appreciate that very much. Thank you very much, Mark Luce Vienna, Austria
Letterman show at 30 Rock.. I meant to mean I was trying to meet Christina Applegate (she is still beautiful no matter what) and ended up meeting Billy Crystal and Will Lee.
His camera-hogging on Letterman used to annoy me, but he's a great musician with a huge talent. He seems like a nice, down-to-earth guy here, and he feels exactly the same way about the Beatles that I do.
That was a terrific interview Joe! At the end of the video, Will hit the nail on the head when he said "there's none better". I am pretty certain that everyone on the planet would agree with him. 👍👍😉😉
I was 10 years old when Love me Do was played on the radio and then they just put out singles one after the other and we all went wild. It really was The Beatles and then everybody else.
Hey John, Glad you enjoyed, Will is a great person and so full of energy. My Dad, Joe, passed away September 28th, but one of his last interviews was a more recent one with Will, earlier this year… I think you would enjoy it too. Best, Britt
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Thank you so much Britt, I really appreciate this. I am very sorry you have lost your beloved father, there is nothing worse than losing someone very close. I wish you well and thanks again. Very thoughtful of you.
John and Paul would go into NEMS record store and go directly to the record labels section that specialized in offering US songs for oversees consumption. That's where they got many of their obscure songs and B sides that they arranged for their live act. When Brian first got to know the Beatles he said to John and Paul, ah, you're the ones who kept auditioning records in the booth.
I once saw the Fab Faux at Berklee Performance Center in Boston. I waited then watched intently for all those Sgt. Pepper strange sounds and vocal performances. Will and his band did not disappoint. Very passionate deliveries of some of the most off the wall Beatles tunes echoed throughout the hall that night. Very excellent band these guys made up.
If that Boston gig was Oct. 4, 2008, I was there!!, gr8 gig, awesome sound, seems like they played almost 3 hrs., they had an intermission, I thought it was over, so I go down to see if the sound guy would give me the set list, he told me they were taking a break & would be back in about 15 min., told me he would give it to me after the gig, he kept his word. Met Will after a Letterman show, got a photo with him, met all the Letterman show band members at 1 time or another, got photos with all of them. 1 time Paul S. was out sick, Warren Zevon subbed 4 him, got to meet him also & Letterman!!, saw Fab Faux again in D.C. about 6 months later at the Warner Theatre. ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've seen the Fab Faux a few times over the years and they are fantastic. My favorite was seeing them do the White Album in its entirety from start to finish, including Revolution #9. Hope to see them again soon when the pandemic is under control.
Thinking back to Will's early years on Letterman it was obvious what Beatles fans they all were. I wonder how many times they went to a commercial break playing George Harrison's lead guitar intro to "And Your Bird Can Sing."
The Fab Faux is the BEST at what they do. I'm still stunned when I listen to them recreate the music of The Beatles. No one does it better. That's a fact! If you're not familiar with their accomplishments, find them on RUclips. You will be PULVERIZED!
Here's a thought Joe....get in touch with KEN BURNS and ask him to create a documentary of ROCK N ROLL session players...Will Lee's recounts of working with different artists and revealing their personalities, as well as his, is fascinating...Thanks for a great slice of history!
Thank you, Joe Chambers. I dig Will Lee. I worship The Beatles. George was my fave. Rest in peace. Will Lee Performs "MacArthur Park" on Letterman. I saw this when it first aired. Will's singing impressed the heck out of me, especially when he hit the last note. Trumpeter extraordinaire Maynard Ferguson, RIP, would be proud. ruclips.net/video/_N1AkdG0PUE/видео.html Here's another clip of Will Lee, stage right, rocking out on Letterman. I just can't get enough of this. Such a wonderful performance by Mary Chapin Carpenter, accompanied by the late, great John Jennings on guitar, plus Paul Shaffer and The CBS Orchestra. Two thumbs up. Reminds me of why I fell in love with music. ruclips.net/video/UqRo3pRH1_g/видео.html I miss Letterman and all the great recording artists he brought to the stage, but, in the words of the quiet Beatle, all things must pass.

Thanks 1956........Joe
Thanks for watching Ronnie...Joe
LOVE your interviews, Joe!! Keep 'em coming! They are a welcome relief from the usual fare of the day!
Thanks “Chick”..... Best....Joe
Great interview. Always liked and respected Will Lee. His playing always seemed to drive, yet underpin whatever was being played. He could do anything.
Fabulous! Will is SUCH a Gentleman. 🍎 Thanks for this, Joe. #bassilicious
Glad you enjoyed it Rich...Joe
I was watching Sullivan that night in Feb. 1964 when the Beatles changed the world. There was a radio station (think it was out of Cleveland) played only Beatles for an hour every night. Listened on my little transistor radio in E. Tenn.
The Beatles are unique in that no two songs sound alike.
Love your interviews, and just subscribed.
Thanks Mike...Joe
Great interview
Thanks Morris…. joe
Incredible musician.
didnt Will play in Dave Letermans band on his show?
I met Will Lee after a Fab Faux show and he told me about how George Harrison showed him the bass notes to Something. Will Lee is a real gentleman and a great musician.
Great interview!
Thanks Phillip..... Joe
Man what an interesting guy...could listen to him talking about the Beatles all day
I can’t help but think Will Lee and Jeff Daniels could be brothers.
Seems like a cool guy...
Great show!
Another great interview! I love the fact that Will started humming the bass part of This Boy 🤪
Thanks for watching 997….. Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum I don’t always comment but I love your videos and your style of interviewing. Many could take note. Your passion for music and genuine interest and knowledge of your guests is second to none.
Many thanks 997….. Joe
Luv ur interviews, Joe.
Thanks JT...Joe
This interviewer is great. He always sits back and lets the musicians talk and when he does comment or ask a short question its almost always the same thing I'm saying at home (right after "Wow!" haha) and the same question I would've asked
Hi 44..... that’s very kind of you to say... I’m very glad you enjoyed watching them. Thanks again...Joe
" Id have to have one if i were me"
Priceless and here's to as much top donations Jo can amass from the topper most of the popper most, and best of all the unsung heroes, so much soul a pot of grits hovers as these memories come to life 🎶
Thanks MM.....Best....Joe
People do not realize how good George was on the guitar.....he always gets overlooked.
Even if he wasn't the greatest player, the sheer number of memorable intros, solos, and riffs he created are forever unmatched.
I played as John Lennon in a Beatles tribute band and it was so cool singing harmony with the other guys. It was really fun pretending to be the beatles. Great interview Joe 👍🏻😎
Thanks David....( I played Paul but in the 5th grade:) best...Joe
Look forward to hearing from you!
Thanks for this interesting and enjoyable video.
Thanks for watching Robin...Joe
How a very to be an ultimate Beatle fan and being able to play with one of his idols and then end up playing with Ringo, and playing on John Lennon and Ringo' s album. His doing a cartwheel on stage and tell the front row and yelling to them " I'm in Beatle Heaven ".A very lucky man.
only you, Joe. can pull this interview off with grace!
Thanks Andy...Joe
Funny will was humming the bass line from " This Boy" when saying how lame music was before the beatles. Love it.
"This Boy" certainly follows a standard Doo-Wop chord progression, but the lyrics and perspective of the song are different and pointing to a new realm of pop music. It's a Doo-Wop template but sounds new and original. It's hard to explain. The song has the elements of talent and genius!
I can't stop smiling and watching this interview
Thanks for watching 001100....Joe
Not true that the concert Will Lee was referring to was the first concert by George in London since the roof top concert with the Beatles. George played the Prince's Trust concert in London at Wembley arena in 1987.
Oh, of course- thanks for that!
@@LateShowBottomEnd Hi Will,
This was a very informative interview.
Thank you very much,
Mark Luce

Will is such a cool intelligent musician. George knows how to pick 'em!
Thanks for watching Moe.... and yes... your right about how cool and smart Will is. Best, Joe
I was at Royal Albert Hall - best day of my Beatles life.
Love Will Lee and watching him all those years on the Letterman show. Be sure to check him out singing Mac Arthur Park on that show, it's great....
I met this man many years ago and I still have his autograph
Letterman show at 30 Rock.. I meant to mean I was trying to meet Christina Applegate (she is still beautiful no matter what) and ended up meeting Billy Crystal and Will Lee.
I've been to a thousand concerts and the Fab Faux put as great of a show as anyone.I've seen them 4 times and I'llwill see them whenever I can.
Thanks for sharing Kev....Joe
His camera-hogging on Letterman used to annoy me, but he's a great musician with a huge talent. He seems like a nice, down-to-earth guy here, and he feels exactly the same way about the Beatles that I do.
Ku Ku Kach00. Great interview.
Thanks for watching B&B.... best...Joe
That was a terrific interview Joe! At the end of the video, Will hit the nail on the head when he said "there's none better". I am pretty certain that everyone on the planet would agree with him. 👍👍😉😉
Hi Steve... thanks again for watching... yes the Beatles were unbelievable.,....Joe
Well, that was a great and interesting interview. Anyone know where one could catch a glimpse of the fab foux?
I was 10 years old when Love me Do was played on the radio and then they just put out singles one after the other and we all went wild. It really was The Beatles and then everybody else.
when meeting one of your heroes goes very well...great story
Dhani with the sparkle Duo Jet! My dream guitar!
1:40……he’s humming “This Boy” without realizing it 😉
God I enjoyed this .. thank you so much.
Hey John,
Glad you enjoyed, Will is a great person and so full of energy.
My Dad, Joe, passed away September 28th, but one of his last interviews was a more recent one with Will, earlier this year… I think you would enjoy it too.
Best,
Britt
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Thank you so much Britt, I really appreciate this. I am very sorry you have lost your beloved father, there is nothing worse than losing someone very close. I wish you well and thanks again. Very thoughtful of you.
Thank you too, for your very kind words, means so much.
Merry Christmas,
Britt
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum I wish you the most beautiful Christmas .. take great care ... P.S. You sound like a lovely person.
Will is a friend of a very good friend of mine and he (my friend) thinks the world of him.
4, 2008, I was there!!, gr8 gig, awesome sound, seems like they played almost 3 hrs., they had an intermission, I thought it was over, so I go down to see if
the sound guy would give me the set list, he told me they were taking a break & would be back in about 15 min., told me he would give it to me after the gig, he kept his word. Met
Will after a Letterman show, got a photo with him, met all the Letterman show band members at 1 time or another, got photos with all of them. 1 time Paul S. was out sick, Warren Zevon
subbed 4 him, got to meet him also & Letterman!!, saw Fab Faux again in D.C. about 6 months later at the Warner Theatre. ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great job Will
I never heard him really speak all those years on the Letterman show. Great interview.
Thanks for watching Shaman...Joe
Will's just a really great guy!! I've been an aquatience of his for 30 years. I've been friends with Jimmy Vivino for ages..Really great guy!
Thanks for watching Andy...Joe
The Fab Faux is the BEST at what they do. I'm still stunned when I listen to them recreate the music of The Beatles. No one does it better. That's a fact! If you're not familiar with their accomplishments, find them on RUclips. You will be PULVERIZED!
Here's a thought Joe....get in touch with KEN BURNS and ask him to create a documentary of ROCK N ROLL session players...Will Lee's recounts of working with different artists and revealing their personalities, as well as his, is fascinating...Thanks for a great slice of history!
Thanks alrite....Joe
Thank you, Joe Chambers. I dig Will Lee. I worship The Beatles. George was my fave. Rest in peace.
Will Lee Performs "MacArthur Park" on Letterman. I saw this when it first aired. Will's singing impressed the heck out of me, especially when he hit the last note. Trumpeter extraordinaire Maynard Ferguson, RIP, would be proud.

Here's another clip of Will Lee, stage right, rocking out on Letterman. I just can't get enough of this. Such a wonderful performance by Mary Chapin Carpenter, accompanied by the late, great John Jennings on guitar, plus Paul Shaffer and The CBS Orchestra. Two thumbs up. Reminds me of why I fell in love with music.

I miss Letterman and all the great recording artists he brought to the stage, but, in the words of the quiet Beatle, all things must pass.
Thanks for watching again.........EOTT....Joe
He's such a great musician.

Great interviews with Joe Chambers.
Thanks J... Best...Joe
Went at the Musicians' Hall of Fame over the summer. Joe, how's the progress with the museum. ItIt's such an important place. Much success.
Hey Ken… my dad, Joe, passed on September 28th. It always meant so much when he met his RUclips friends at the museum… hope he was there when you visited. Thank you for supporting the channel… hope you can make it back to the museum, I’m sure there is something new since you’ve been there.
Best,

Will Lee is excellent...his version on Letterman's, of MacArthur's Park is the best I have ever heard.
The Worlds Most Dangerous Band founding member.
Will, there is not enough times I can listen to you singing MacArthur Park on Letterman !!!!!!!!!!!
