I've got to say, THANK YOU! I'm no electrician so I appreciate the step-by-step installation instructions. I followed the video to the letter and now my over-the-sink light matches the new LED Canned lights I put in my (newly remodeled) kitchen ceiling. Don't tell my wife I used your video, though... please. I want her to keep thinking I'm a friggen' genius.
Thank you so much for your detailed but quick video. I've been dreading trying this out on my own for a year but finally did it. I changed out 4 of them today and all work perfectly. Will be doing about 15 more. Thank you again. You saved me a lot of money and I can have some pride for doing it myself (of course with your helpful video).
Thank you for this video. I’ve been putting off doing this for over a year now because I couldn’t find all the details that go in to replacing these and upgrading them like you did. Once I found your video, I replaced them next day and now all my lights work! I really appreciate you making this video and helping us out! Thanks again!
Thank you so much! This video saved me $500 of electrician costs. I had no idea the CFL had a ballast which was puzzling me when I tried to connect the red/blue wires directly to the LED light. A+ video !
Thanks for this video I immediately became overwhelmed when I saw I had two of these while replacing all of my overhead lights. This was a perfect walk through
Great tutorial. This gave me the information I needed to decide to deal with this exact problem, a broken CFL ballast in a recessed ceiling can. I didn't realize the can was so easy to move out of the way and the ballast was easy to remove until I saw this video. Previously I imagined I would have to access it from the attic or cut through the ceiling. Silly me!
Thank you so much for posting this video! The CFL ballast's wiring looked intimidating, but your clear instructions helped me understand what was going on and get over my nervousness. My first LED conversion went well and I anticipate the rest will be easier. You saved us a lot of money; thanks again!
You're so welcome kenneth! I'm glad that this video was helpful for you! Just like you said The more you do the easier and smoother it will get! Keep up the Great work!
@@handymanjourney this method did not work on the light on top of my sink. I had to directly connect the red and blue to the thicker gauge white and black.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I always get nervous performing electrical work but this video gave me the confidence to try and tackle the job of replacing my old CFLs. Once I got up in the ceiling, my setup had some minor differences but after following this step by step for the first light, I was able to replace all 8 CFLs in my house without even needing a flashlight or this video for lights 2 through 8.
Thanks for posting this video. You have saved me a lot of effort. I was thinking I would have to cut the drywall to get the old fixture out in order to install the new one. 😬
Perfect, man. Great instructional video. I was going to do this project about 5 years ago. It seemed (from what was available at the time) to be too much hassle. Then, a couple days ago, I saw this video. I thought, "that doesn't seem so hard." And it wasn't. Especially when I had this video to go by. I did 6 lights in about 1 hour 20 minutes. By the last light, I was doing them in 10 minutes.
I followed your instructions and it was fairly simple once I learned the ballast box I have had wires that I believe were “step down” voltage box….more wires than what you depicted…anywho…I got it out and swapped. The next half dozen will be faster for sure…thx 👍🏼
Thank you as always for a very good video. I was able to convert 2 of these lights with your help. I presume that the red and blue wire connections inside the light can, go to either the white or black wires. I admit to leaving the flashlight in the loft and having to remove the can again!!! The main problem I experienced, was gaining access to the fixture mounted directly over a bath, my stepladder was too wide to fit inside the tub, a narrower 2 step option still left a full stretch, access is everything! I enjoy your encouraging videos, as a 'hobby handyman' here is SO CAL I am taking on a bigger variety of jobs now.
@@handymanjourney just finished the whole kitchen about 7 total! Definitely do-able! Just tedious. I will recommend anyone trying this to have plenty of wire nuts you will need them! Luckily I had a box laying around. Thanks again for the video!
Just spent $50 replacing the light bulbs on this damn 4 prong crap , 4 hours later 5 of the 6 bulbs already blew out. Gonna follow your instructions and replace them with leds this weekend! Thanks!
Wow i just swopped one out be-for this video. I removed the wire and ran new wire threw the existing can, i didn’t even think of reusing the wires like yours thanks i have 6 more to do next month you just saved material cost and a head ache
Thank you! This was perfect! This was my exact scenario almost "to a T". (My ballast box was on the opposite side of the wiring box -- same as yours, just turned around / on the opposite plate, not facing the hole for the light fixture -- but I was able to figure it out thanks to your video)
Love it! It was a concise tutorial. In the last wiring step, I couldn't tell if you had all 4 wires in 1 wing connector but I figured it was blue/white AND red/black - the same way done on the ballast box. Thanks, man!
Good job. The ONLY thing I would add is to right a quick little note reminding you what color wire you connected to the hot and neutral.... for people who are new to this. I can just see someone closing it all up and when it comes to the connections they can’t remember. Thanks for putting out this video. I remember when I did a few of them I had a hard time finding someone on RUclips with these instructions.... thanks again
@@handymanjourney Hey Allen, I got through most of the rewiring. But just realized there's no way to refasten my can back up there. There was a single nut coming through a bracket, through the can, and to a wing nut. But once we removed the can, there's no way to position and fasten that wingnut from the inside. Any suggestions?
This worked perfectly. One thing: i linked all 4 wires together at the end (bad). I needed to be blue 2 white & red 2 black like in the box. Thank you this was a great help!!!!

AJourneyOfYourSoul thanks for the comment! These CFL s are code for new homes now where I live. They are more environmentaly friendly but I don't like them
Awesome video. Short, to the point, and the instructions are clear. But I do have a question. What if i wanted to switch from the 4 prong to a screw in socket so that I can use smart LED bulbs?

I got shocked with the first light and turned off just about all my breakers. I'm preparing for my second light replacement but after shutting off the main breaker, I'm still seeing some voltage on the light prongs. Any ideas?
It is possible there may be minimal voltage present as some ballasts may have a capacitor built in that stores a little voltage, the best option is to cut each wire individually and don't touch the ends of any wires
Side note. Where they have several in the same room, probably good idea to buy a few extra identical LEDs so any replacements match the style and color temperature of the others. (If any happen to die over the next decade). Good video, thank you Adam.
