    Its based on the Austrian Steyr 12M18. Licensed for Stewart and Stevenson for the north american market with US components. Great truck for military an municipal works or for offroad traveling.

    Very proud to see this video. I still remember redesigning those battery box/Air Tank in Medford Oregon for one full week. Putting together the frame and suspensions. Redesigning the whole brakes system and the rigid air brake testing in Jennerstown Pennsylvania. It is just a good memory to remember. Peace and cheers!

    These are on auction now, starting at $7k and going for around $15k according to closed auctions. There are about fifteen available today. So not so exclusive any more.

    Drove the original steyr 12m18 in the austrian armed forces. Kinda weird seeing this with so much more extra steel components which serve no real use.

      $55K LOL....I buy these off GovPlanet for $1200-5000. Anyone can paint the ext matte OD green for less then $1500. New tires are probably the most expensive at $650 ea. provided no mechanical issues need repair. $55k LOL jeez!

    Does it have differential lock...The British army have a very similar vehicle...DAF LEYLAND are not high quality and the top speed is about 45mph...159hp... it has a gearbox lock but no differential locks! AWD...I managed to get the thing stuck going at an angle across a shallow ditch. Once you have the 2 wheels with most traction stopped then you need a push!! What is the top speed? Do you know that details for the transmission and does it have an overdrive for highway speed? Are parts difficult to get? It looks like a STEYR cab.

    • @aaron108
      @aaron108 11 лет назад

      not sure about the top speed but its got bout 250hp with over 600 ft lbs of torque, Im in the army and it does just fine at accelerating,and full-time four wheel drive, 30/70 torque split on road, 50/50 offroad,

    • @arcqueidanon5874
      @arcqueidanon5874 10 лет назад +2

      They have a High/Low locking system on them ,but most get disabled do to heavy tire wear and people over speeding them in lock makes the front drive shaft snap. I heard that the issue was solved shortly after they where fielded in 1998. I got to drive the 5 ton version at Ft.Bragg and I fell in love with the MMTV's. The old five tons we turned in for the new MMTV variants where falling apart so I guess any new truck would have done the trick.

    • @ryanhogge8
      @ryanhogge8 10 лет назад +1

      Aaron Darst Top speed is around 55-65 MPH depending on if the wind's at your back and if you're going downhill LOL

    • @aaron108
      @aaron108 10 лет назад

      yea its not fast by any means, although not slow at accelerating,although, we usually just punch it all the time

    • @edvanthienen6769
      @edvanthienen6769 6 лет назад

      Francois the Daf Leyland is a different beast altogether and is not at all like the Styer! you are misnaming some thing on it as well it has no "Allwheel drive" but 4 wheel drive and a transfercase Lock not a gearbox Lock. They are generally fairly tough and reliable but have their limits like anything for a light truck.

    • @policeandtacticalsupply
      @policeandtacticalsupply  10 лет назад

      This is not a multi fuel truck

    • @ryanhogge8
      @ryanhogge8 10 лет назад

      Not multifuel, it runs a caterpillar 3126 and the fuel economy is what you would expect from a military on/off road cargo truck: Poor.
      That being said, they are fun to drive when you're not paying out of pocket for the repairs and fuel. I am a particular fan of the caterpillar power plant in it.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 4 года назад

      @@ryanhogge8 The FMTV has the 3116 from 1994 to 1998 and then after 1998,they all use the 3126/C-7.These Trucks are horrible when it comes to Reliability and Mainteance.Anyone is better off with a 5T.The 7.2L Caterpillar is a gutless Engine and low HP compared to what others can put out.The FMTV itself as a Truck has Engine,Transmssion,Integral Transfer Case,Planetary Axle,and Air Actuator errors.Most of it due to Electrical and being fragile.The 3116 was all Mechanical and about the best you could get from these.They used the 3116 in the M35A3 and M109A4,they were a large improvement from the Multi-Fuel that the M35A2 and M185A3/M109A3 had.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 4 года назад

      The only Trucks that had the Multi-Fuel were the M54 Series 5T like the M51A2,M52A2,M54A2,etc that either had the 135 HP LDT-465 or 175 HP LDS-465.Other Variants like the M51,M52,M54,etc were Gasoline with a R602 from Continental.And then the M51A1,M52A1,M54A1,etc had the EDNT-673 Thermodyne from Mack.
      The M35A1 from 1961 to 1966 had a 134 HP LDT-427.The older M35 Series were all Gas Jobs with a 127 HP OA-331 from Reo and Continental.The M35A2 wasn't until after the M35A1 and they had either a LDS-465,LDT-465,or a 168 HP LT-465.They didn't get the LDT until 1970.The Deuce was discontinued in 1988.All of the Multi-Fuels were made by Continental,Hercules,and White.Caterpillar even made the M520 and M553 Goers which used D333 with 213 HP from 1972 to 1976.But they had other Variants dating back to 1964 that had a D333C from Caterpillar which was a 192 HP Multi-Fuel.Only 1,300 of those were made.
      The FMTV all have Caterpillar Engines.From 1994 to 1998 they use the 3116 and after they are all 3126/C-7.The M35A3 also used the 3116 starting in 1993 until 1999.

    How reliable are these?

    • @onlyajeep97
      @onlyajeep97 6 лет назад

      Very reliable. They were designed to be so. the maintenance is very straight forward. The motor has a good power to weight ratio, so its not over worked. Speaking of the motor. It doesn't have a timing belt and it doesn't have a timing chain. the engine keeps in time via direct gears. I have worked on these and its not bad at all.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 4 года назад +1

      @@onlyajeep97 The 3116 has Injector,Injector Cup errors,and could drop Exhaust Manifolds.That's the 7.2L the FMTV had from 1994 to 1998.The 3126/C-7 they use now has numerous Head Gasket and Electrical failures.The FMTV itself has Engine,Transmssion,Integral Transfer Case,Planetary Axle,and Air Actuator flaws as well.These Trucks are only as good until they fuck up.The older M923A2-M944A2 5 Ton Trucks were much better in almost every way with the 6CT 12 Valve Cummins.Even the older 5T Trucks that had the NHC-250 from Cummins or EDNT-673 Thermodyne from Mack don't have a quarter of the issues that these present.The 3116-3126 Caterpillars are shitty Engines.Alot of Caterpillar Engines at that ever since 1998 have alot of Head Gasket and Bearing Issues.

      @@Slim_Slid well crap. I guess I got a good one. I haven been lucky. I use my lmtv for hevy equipment recovery. I do agree I like the M923A2 series a lot more.

      @Slim_Slid 4 года назад +1

      @@onlyajeep97 I had a M35A3 with the 3116,it was no different than what the FMTV first had.Mine came wirh 170 HP but I Modified it to 290 HP.The 3116 and 3126/C-7 are only rated for 330 HP.Basically 1994-1998 FMTV's are the best if that is what you want.But Mainteance and Errors are a big flaw.I just stuck with my M923A2 right after I had a M1078.
