  • A trial scheme to reduce the amount of fat and oil clogging Peterborough's sewers has been hailed a success with the number of blockages in the city's Central Ward falling by almost two thirds.
The campaign saw Anglian Water send a team into Peterborough to speak with residents and food outlets and ask them to think about what they put into the drains.
Working with community groups, trained outreach workers gave out leaflets and posters in English, Punjabi, Urdu and Polish, along with free sink strainers.
At the same time, restaurants, pubs, take-aways and catering businesses were given 'how to' packs including posters, stickers and information on the safe disposal of cooking waste.
Paul Gibbs, Anglian Water's Director of Wastewater, said: "This has been a huge effort and now a huge success.
"We are really pleased because this was a new approach for us; getting out into communities and taking the message directly to the people who can help us solve the problem -- our customers."
