In this episode of Quinton Reviews, I try to understand the latest craze to sweep the world: TikTok, an app being threatened with an upcoming ban. Known for dances and memes, I've never been able to understand TikTok, just as I couldn't understand Vine before. But today, I'm going to try my damned best.

I can’t believe that the most effective advert for nord vpn that I’ve seen was essentially just “you can use it to commit treason”
That was first time in my life I regret I am not an American.
I mean, honestly, pretty nifty way to prepare the american left to prepare for the overthrow of the ruling class.
PIA is better tho
nord vpn doesn't give a fuck and I love it.
Ignoring a content ban does not meet the threshold of treason by any stretch of the imagination.
I'm glad we can all just be in this generational limbo together
It''s the same for us old-ass xennials, too cynical to be millennials, too idealistic to be xers
What is the cutoff point for generational limbo?
@@rockwithagun3251 I'd guess around 2 or 3 years in either direction, generations are pretty arbitrary.
same, however I'm shocked quinton is only 1 year older than me when he feels like he's at least a few more
Born end of 1995 and also feel this way. We will always have Drake and Josh I suppose.
[Quinton does things successfully]
Me: "What a great guy, I'm glad he creates so much content."
Quinton: "I'm 23."
[Me, 30, staring into the void that is my desk, realizing I've done nothing]
And that's all you need.
I feel ya, pal.
Right there with you, buddy.
I feel very attacked
Yeah, I was like, fuck, I was a teen in 1996.
Do you have a lot of time staring out into the void? Maybe you could use that time to jot down notes on some post its. Get some writing going :)
“Scroll laugh and like” sounds like the zoomer version of “live laugh love”
Nolan dancing the default dance and ordering a fortnite burger is like a harmless version of that dude who was screaming "im pickle rick reeeee" in McDonalds
It’s just as cringe though
40 lashes ...are you okay? I assume you may need surgery to remove the gatekeeping from your ass
Fif Gallag say what you will about cringe culture but honestly that isn’t gatekeeping
I genuinely never expected out of all the people out there Nolan would've done this kind of thing
Settlerking if you think about it though... isn't cringe culture a way to gatekeep the internet?
if charlie chaplin was alive today he would 100% have a tik tok
Yeah, because he was a groomer.
@@MiloKuroshiro That escaleted quicly.
Yeah, Tik Tok is the new vaudville, so I get this. But Chaplin later in life refused to be on tv because he didn't consider it proper entertainment. I just find that interesting. Every young and old generation is the same
Buster Keaton too
@@Sadiq01 buster keaton revitalized his career thanks to television. I actually read about Chaplin's contempt for tv because of Keaton's autobiography. Chaplin was shocked Keaton was willing ro be on tv. Maybe the lesson is some older people fall into the trap of not liking new things while others can.
As a 25 year old who uses TikTok: it’s just like any other social media platform. There’s bubbles. I have literally never seen any of the stuff you showed on my for you page. I see people hating on america, black lipstick, tattoo checks, dnd player dice hoards and trans haircut povs.
Wow, you're really out here just exposing my FYP right now, huh?
Y’all missing the best part of Tiktok: Irish farmer Tiktok
I think you are the oldest tiktok user.
yeah this video is pretty mean spirited "I don't understand it so it's stupid!"
@@ManzanaDeMuerte it's not stupid, it's just something we don't really get... Humor as really change from millennials to the next gen and we are trying to understand how to get from A mental state to B mental state, because we don't want to become boomers...
I find it hard to believe that people find Quinton unattractive, 45% of the reason I subscribed was because he is hot
Same tbh
Yo me too. Hot and cute, and funny too.
He is cute, but he doesn't have the trendy aesthetic where you get to choose from instagram-face with a side of face tune, or under-baked dough with the worst wig you could find in your grandmother's drawer.
Same. Daddy asf.
It's called preferences.
Today I discovered that even Quinton is younger than me... I'm gonna go have another mid-20s life crisis so like peace... See ya later
Same, I don't like this feeling.
@@salsamonkey65 It's so frequent feeling like that that I just embrace it and smile.
i know the feeling. I have been wanting to make my own youtube channel just like quinton reviews for years. But I have been too busy watching other youtubers. And seeing how successful and high quality these videos are, I'm not sure to be jealous or happy.
Me too.
Yeah midlife crises are always tough
Quinton is 23 but asking if these Tik Tokers are about to do the macarena, proves he is an old soul in a young body
With a 40 year old man beard.
Bro what, my graduation was recent and everyone danced the Macarena, we didn’t even request it.
dude the macarena is only from the late 90s...
I didn’t know there were two Pauls until 4 months ago and I’ve just apparently been using Jake and Logan interchangeably.

"You've became the human personification of all TikTok videos "
- Quinton
This is easily the harshest insult I've heard in some time.
and yet he says he doesn't understand tiktok. How quickly he is to call someone that. And honestly it seems like he really missed the mark.
When you said millennials were embarrassing culturally I took immediate offense and then looked up at the screen and saw the HRC Broad City clip and instantly felt shame.
I don’t even know what the fuck that clip was from. It kinda pisses me off how he generalizes our entire generation when most people my age fucking hate HRC.
that clip sent me into an immediate depression
@@scarymonsterzz Yeah I agree but I can understand a bit where he's coming from. But I used to watch Broad City and then I remember when I saw that scene I felt so betrayed. Like, the whole show is to be yourself and don't sell out and even made being poor kind of cool and relatable and then just sells their soul to HRC who represents the exact opposite. Sorry I went on a tangent there lol.
@@aaronsoto1346 i also used to watch broad city, i remember really liking it. i don't remember this clip at all...it was either from a later season that i didn't see or i scrubbed it from my mind. but when i saw it in this video i was genuinely shocked to see the lead characters acting like that. such cognitive dissonance imo.
Bro same
I will never stop liking you Quinton, I don't even have a reason why, you just delight me fundamentally as a person
i’m a zillennial as well. tiktok reminds me of early youtube: lots of vlogging, cat vids, pranks. i’ve been successfully brainwashed into enjoying the app tbh but i think i have it figured out. there’s some good content if u don’t give the bad content ur view time or likes.
Yeah, I totally agree. There are people our age who are interested in the dancing and emoji vids etc. but definitely not all that's out there.
Honestly you have to sift through some garbage content for a short bit when you start, but once the algorithms knows what you ACTUALLY enjoy, your FYP will be golden
Exactly. It took a while to find my niches (or, more accurately, for TikTok to categorize me properly) and now it's about a 60-40 split of things I enjoy and things I don't but getting better.
Some things I like but don't know why. I have a video saved of JoJo Siwa dancing to a Lizzo song, but am not necessarily interested in either of them??? But I love that video?????
I don't get how you get this, I am from I think Middle Gen-Z to Pre-Gen A yet somehow, this shit doesn't make any sense to me. Maybe its because I learned at an early stage that every prank is probably staged or that I grew up watching Minecraft.
I've always pictured Quinton as the cool nerdy older brother who teaches me fun and interesting things.
And then I find out that I'm a few months OLDER than him.
...
Sorry, I'm going to need a minute.
Me too lol.
Every single time I’m reminded of this I immediately feel absolutely ancient
I'm a few YEARS older than him. Imagine how I felt when I realized he wasn't older than me. Damn him and his ability to grow facial hair!
Bruh, how old are you guys? I'm not even 18 yet
I was born in '93, so I'm three years older than him. But yeah, color me shocked lol.
Straight tiktok is scary
That exists?
The quinton plush is genuinely really cute, I'm just not a big plush dude. Plus, it seems really weird to have a plush of a real human being.
Dashiegames has a plush of himself lol.
It's a fan thing lol most RUclipsrs have sold Merch plushies of themselves it's odd but it happens o3o
I genuinely screamed out loud "Nolan from the Pizza Party Podcast?!" When the part arrived.
I gotta say, don’t go into someone’s workplace, put them in an uncomfortable situation, film it, and then share it publicly without their consent. This is a bad thing to do.
As a 26 year old, I kind of understand being in a generational limbo. It doesn’t help that I didn’t always watch what everyone was seeing at the time.
9:33 The fact Quinton used Vengaboys here shows that his is truly a millennial at heart.
It's interesting how people used to make fun of musical.ly content, but then musical.ly rebranded to TikTok and a few months later people were super into it.
I'm glad people have fun with it, but I also feel like I don't really get it and I thought Vine wasn't that great either, so "It's like the new Vine" doesn't make me want to download it either. I've watched some TikToks that friends showed me and the educational TikToks always make me think "I wish you explained this somewhere where you can go into more detail" because the 1 min time limit is, well, limiting. I think it works best for short form comedic content but a lot of it is hit or miss (like Vine).
My favourite take is
"TikTok personalities are engaging in Anarchist praxis" and that's the only way I'll look at TikTok now
gotta give Nord props for allowing quinton to literally advertise them as a device of mass treason
Never have you made getting a VPN more tempting than when you said that it can help me commit treason... The temptation is so great now!
generations arent real and everyone experiences time
your tiktok experience is so different than mine bc the algorithm was like hmm what does straight white dudes like and for me my friend sent me a bunch of lesbian tiktoks so i was in the gay realm. and then i liked one vid of an indigenous dude doing a very cool traditional dance and the algorithm said Oh okay and then that got mixed in. a wonderful time, but i deleted bc i have no self control and was too into it
edit: sorry for assuming your sexuality, very rude of me
Amazing the great things you can find if you spend a minute to actually get to know the app. Instead of hating on it for RUclips views
@@ManzanaDeMuerte i gotta admit, before my friend sent me quality toks i thought along the same lines as quinton. but it does feel like youtubers pick on tiktok a lot
Don't worry, I'm 17 and have no idea what the appeal of TikTok is either
@@darthorion2002 Maybe it's just a strong indicator that you're both not terrible. It probably is. Definitely. PS, I'm fucking twice your age.
There’s something on it for everyone you just have to be on it for a while so the algorithm recommends stuff you actually like
The appeal of tik tok is to try and become famous for being either 1. attractive and dance the same dance as everyone else 2. Try to Be funny 3. Be the first to a trend and 4. Find validation if they are attractive or not
I'm 14 yet I still don't get why people are attracted to this shit, can someone explain?
@@Ludwig_Perpenhente same
bruh youre supposed to like and press "not interested" so youll actually get content you want
for real there’s lots of funny and actually informative stuff on tiktok outside of the very most popular stuff that people see. I’m tired of seeing people who shit on tiktok reposting good tiktoks with the tags cropped out
Judging TikTok by its surface level content is like judging RUclips by the trending page.
That Footloose thing was one of the best things I've ever seen in my life.
Epic NordVPN plug. That was so smooth.
Wow, that animation, in the beginning, was LOVELY!
Aw shucks!
Quinton, I'm a '97 kid and I feel you so hard. I'm a further anomally who has stayed off of social media/vine/popular apps. When I'm in my break room at work with someone just 2 years younger than me who is watching a bunch of vids on/referencing TikTok vids, I feel like a grampa.
God you were really on the most uncool part of tiktok. Like where’s the black cosplayers twerking to death metal, indigenous puppet shows made to teach individual languages to children, foraging tiktok? This is like trying to understand RUclips but Only from videos that end up on the home page.
Yeah... no thaanks. Keep your "Cool" tiktok.
That is one of the nice parts about Tiktok, the algorithm is very intelligent (probs from all he data collection but welp). There is a niche for everybody.
Just imagine explaining what TikTok is to people in 1920 and the petty, internet reasons it sucks.
That's me.
That's how I feel too. I don't know where the fuck to even approach starting.
"A lot of people dancing to famous songs and it can be really stupid but is sometimes good"
At least as a start?
Idk I feel like if you just say “women are allowed to be on it and express themselves. They might be upset for a whole different reason lol
I was born in 91. Its kind of weird. Like I feel like i fit in with the youngest millenials and the oldest gen z's.
Generational shifts are so weird and abstract and rarely feel very true to real experience
I’m a ‘98 kid and I feel a bit like that too😅 I can’t help but watch shows I missed out on growing up (like Darkwing Duck, Samurai Jack etc)
The truth is that generations blend and overlap with each other. The cut off points are just arbitrary. For example my parents are considered 2 different generations (Boomer and Gen X) but there are only 2.5 years age difference between them. It's bizarre to even consider them separate generations because they're just not in terms of culture and experience growing up. I think millennials are a little easier to define from Gen X because we became of age around the time of the 2008 recession and we have known no other world. But generally there aren't significant cut off points where one generation ends and another begins.
fellow 91er!
I've always seen the generational markers as approximate, because what really differentiates people is how the world hit you when you were growing up. So Millennials have had internet devices for most of their lives and are very familiar with them, but still remember their childhood when that stuff was more rare/nonexistent so they can still do things like call a pizza place instead of order online. Gen Z has always had a device in their hand, which makes them hopeless when it comes to doing anything "analog", but good at doing whatever it is they do on TikTok.
But your placement between those two trends has as much to do with your family's wealth and your own life choices as it does with the literal day you were born, is my point.
1992 here
I relate more culturally to Gen Z, but I'm miserable and defeatist like millennials.
@@Squeejee09 yeah thats pretty spot on the money. Like I literally can't remember ever not having a computer because my dad kept one st home for occasional work use. Consequently I spent way more time online than most my peers which might be a factor in why I prefer most online/text communication more than calling etc.
But yeah the defining aspect of a generation is generally what youre experiences are.
You can't understand TikTok because there's simply not one TikTok, at all. The algorithm is so specific that your experience is highly personalized, leading to the birth of countless subcultures inside the app, with little to no overlap. It feels a bit like Twitter or RUclips itself, except that eco chambers are a choice on there, while existing by design on TikTok, making interaction between groups relatively limited.
My TikTok experience, for example, consist mostly on D&D, Trans and Shappic content.
And Synth Rat.
Edit: After seeing the video, it makes me kind of sad to see you misrepresent the app that much. Again, considering how TikTok works, it's hard for you to actually see this, but there's layers of content on the app you're (mostly) dismissing, often extremely informative and/or creative, made by people of completely different age groups and from all walks of life.
Extremely this. I’m kind of baffled how badly he missed the point. It’s all algorithm. Tik Tok sucks before you like stuff and train the algorithm, then you start getting served quality stuff a lot of the time.
@@stackq999 he tells his friend that he's the entire embodiment of tiktok (which, honestly he wasnt) while at the same time saying he doesn't understand tiktok.
Completely agree. It's weird to me that he titled this video "Trying to Understand TikTok" when he didn't really try at all...
I am shocked, I can't believe I am a month older then Quinton. I was ready for him to say he was 27 or something. I love the visuals in this video.
C-can I stop holding my breath now?

nooo he's in the straight part of tiktok get em outta there
“The first time I met Nolan was when I went on his podcast”
Poor Pan.
I was born two months before you, and I consider myself a millennial. However, this may be due to having a brother 8 years older than me. I idolized him and he raised me nearly single-handedly, so...
You're both late millennials imho. It's just like early millennials are closer to gen Xers late millennials are like the beta version of gen Z.
I feel the same way about my appearance as you, Quinton. It's very nice to hear someone sum it up so well. Not a lot of people are out there repping the "Sasquatch Man with a heart of gold" look
These generation gaps are much weirder in "third world" countries as our access to novel technologies (CDs, DVDs, the INTERNET [yes, I'm yelling for emphasis]) takes much longer to be established. Our contact with statunitian culture is also a bit "delayed" (and qualitatively different).
I'm around 30, but I honestly feel so much older when I'm on RUclips.
Even the notion of "generation gaps" is weird on its own right. I'd say over here there is a wider cultural difference between people who live in small cities and big cities, or with different incomes, than older and younger people. We don't even name our generations (coming to think of it, I can't recall another country which does).
These generations are definitely tailored to market to people in Western countries or similar.
68% discount, really? You couldn't get that one extra percent off?

A friend of mine, she's 17, deleted the app recently because she just got bored.
I enjoyed this video, but I wish that I could share it with my hard-of-hearing friends. RUclips's autocaptions are inaccurate. Would it be possible to add professional captions as a Patreon goal?
community captions are available until September if anyone wants to volunteer to submit some. I'm also hoh. Google is getting rid of it. Creators should sub all their videos imo. Hope it gets added.

This is like saying I hate youtube because everyone who is popular is physically attractive, and point to the vloggers. There's loads of popular 'regular' looking people making interesting videos on it
@@YjaffacakeK On every platform with video appearance is going to be a factor at least somewhat, but youtube never made it a policy to actively suppress people with deformities, at least as far as I know.
Did you conveniently ignore the issues RUclips had with suppressing LGBT content and demonetising trans friendly content? I get that Quinton is bitter because he doesn’t feel hot enough to be on it. But this is like going on the RUclips trending page and complaining about the exact same thing. You’re not cool for hating a popular thing.
It’s hard for me to imagine girls screaming at really tall guys in high school just because when I was in high school I was friends with like a lot of guys who fit the same sort of archetype type of like tall awkward nerdy big boys because I was a huge nerd and I personally being only like 5 feet tall felt comforted by being surrounded by a bunch of people who I knew were nice and were big because it’s like well nothing can get me here

I will never stop loving you Quinton, I have lots of reasons why but that doesn't matter, you just endear me fundamentally as a person.
It scares me seeing other people with the same kind of childhood as me becoming more and more adult and seeing the 90's nostalgia craze being overthrown by 00's nostalgia. I can't reach the age of those people I admired when I was 8. What is this, life? I tried to hide from that by being raised by the internet, but I'm still growing up?
I don't normally watch your vids, but I was born a month before you and the feelings you described in the beginning are SO on point with my experience being born at the same time.
Jesus Christ in the cross you are just 1 year older than me. I feel like straight from the can wet garbage
Hi, Quinton! As a 28 year old cishet white dude, I watch tons of TikTok vids. TikTok works off a very good algorithm that serves you more content related to whatever you interact with the most. I interact with protest-related videos, positive content, art stuff, lgbt videos, and poc videos. It's an interesting way for me to stay entertained and hopeful for the next generation, who are definitely the primary audience for the app. Hold down to get the submenu that lets you dislike stuff essentially, and like anything you come across that you want to be served more of. The more time you spend, you get lots of liked videos.
My favorite thing about is that I share those liked videos with friends through discord streaming w/ bluestacks or just showing them in-person. A lot of people are surprised at how hopeful, hilarious, sarcastic, realistic, and bad-ass the younger generation is.
I just can't believe I did NOT see that clip of Quinton dancing coming
