      mostly on snare and toms... sometimes on OH. I use Slate ML-2. Cheap and they sound AWESOME even without modelling. I use the often without modelling on ride and hihat and OH (to my ears they sound pretty close to KM84 on OH - without modelling).

    This is a great way to show what each of these microphones' base EQ curve is and how it responds to a source. imo the microphone choice is to make your workflow smoother so you have to do less work in post to get to your final product. I think a common misconception, for especially the untrained ear, is that a new microphone will automatically make your mix better and then you get underwhelmed by not getting the result off the bat. The whole reason for this plethora of gear/software choice is to streamline your tracking to release process. That's why I'm loving the direction of not only these large companies making it more accessible to learn about what each piece of gear sounds like, but also content creation/creators sharing what they've learned over the countless years of research and development. Thank you Andrew for this channel and sharing!

    People are upset but the reality is this technology will get better and better. And to be honest if you don’t have 50K for a mic locker you can get really great emulations that no one will be able to tell the difference.

    Great video. Awesome products! One tiny suggestion: The first time you ran through the models, you talked right before switching each one, and it was distracting. The second time, you let the screen show us the changes and didn't talk, which was much better... Keep up the awesome work with your channel!

    I think this mic will inspire and make the recording process fun for producers who are new. The replicating aspect, I don’t think needs to be accurate to the original because it is less common to use raw recordings in most cases.
    Try out gear and if you like it, that’s all that matters

    It's always bad at the same spot, where it's always discernible between any good mic and any budget mics: high mids and highs. No amount of modelling can take care of a spiffy mic, and all those I've used/tried make you work super hard to get enough presence out of a vocal without piercing through people's heads with esses and consonants.

  • @balisaani
    @balisaani 8 месяцев назад +3

    Interesting - at this price point especially. Product design well executed. Acoustic guitar isn't my thing (acoustic pianist here), so I'd much rather have had a piano recording to compare the differences with, but the drums spoke loud and clear for the mics and their models. I like that you added room ambiance as well. Thanks!

    I think this tech is really cool and UAD are obviously doing it really well. Do you have thoughts on option paralysis? I find having so many options can stifle my creativity and productivity vs being limited and using a few tools to get the sound I want. I’m on the fence of getting one of these or a 414.

  • @JohnLawrieTWS

    I mean for a $500 mic it doesn't sound bad just raw without Hemisphere. My question is with these is how do they go if you're running through outboard compression etc. on the way in. I like the idea of a modelling mic but if I'm recording a vocal through my usual chain going in, I don't want to apply the mic modelling afterwards. Would be cooler to me if there were some kind of DSP in the mic itself that stored whatever it was last set to in the plugin or something and output that. I suppose that'd mean also having AD and DA converters inside the mic which is pretty unreasonable but still that's always been the hold up for me with modelling mics. If you run straight into your DAW (or via Unison) and mix entirely in the box then it makes sense though.

    Would using a different large-diaphragm condenser, more or less, achieve the same results? I understand UA has specifically calibrated Hemisphere based on the specs of their standard series mics, but… would it get close?
    I own the SD-1 (and therefore can use hemisphere) but would love to keep using my WA-14 rather than picking up the SC-1 at the moment.

      I like auditioning things like this with a compressor on top of it, cause that brings out even more exaggerated differences. And in a mix, things are going to be processed, so having that information early on is helpful.

    This makes me wish I wouldn't have sold my SD-1. Oh well, I'll just go ahead and give into the temptation of repeatedly making "small $200ish purchases," until I've slowly bankrupted me and my family, thus forcing my future children into generational poverty. However, maybe then, my home studio tracks will finally sound polished and ready for Spotify.
