      I have a tool-tip for you which might help a lot during the intonation process: the ibanez ejk1000 intonation tool. It is a bit pricey (41€ in Germany but it should be a one-time investment) but it is super precise and the whole intonation took me about 10 minutes. I had to file it a little bit down in order to fit into the notch, but as it is made of aluminum this wasn't a big deal. One big advantage is that you don't need to put out the tension of the string: you put the tool onto the saddle, then intonate, tune the string back to pitch, intonate again... and when the string is perfectly intonated you just tighten the screw of the saddle and remove the tool :)

    Thank you for the detailed video!
    It is almost impossibble the make a video that covers all points of setting up a guitar expecially with a floyd rose bridge. I would add some personal points to the topic:
    1. If the nut is too high the main problem is that the notes freted at the 1. and 2. fret will go very sharp, they are usually a bit sharp (you would need tempered nut and tempered frets to avoid this) but with a perfect nut hight it is more torelable.
    2. Truss rod, just to clarify it: it does practically what you said: it counters the string pull effect on the neck. What it really does: if you thingten it it brings the fretboard closer to the strings, if you loosen it it will bring the fretboard away from the strings. The neck it self is usually rockhard maple/mahagony the fretboard is much thinner and usually softer, the truss rod could never put a bow to the whole neck it just adjust the curve of the fretboard, this is why adjusting the truss rod has so little effect on the 1-3 frets and on the 15-24 frets.
    3. Micro tilt does what you said and this helps (mostly) to get better action on the 17-24 frets.
    4. Exotic string winding is not that important with a locking nut, but I found the best method the "John Carruthers" way, just search for it, it is another way of locking the strings to the tunning pegs.
    5. Forget any mesurments. I know this is not really a help for total beginners, but later on you should never ever measure anything on a guitar, just go by feel.

    Thanks so much for this tutorial.. the most detail I found on youtube so far. I usually play more jazz than rock with my semi hollow guitar and sometimes with my stratocaster. Several months ago I bought my first floyd rose guitar online to be able to imitate Satriani's and Vai's style but ended up in frustration about the setting up, apparently, until I found your complete tutorial. Thanks heaps mate... keep the good work.

      @troylink9118 You are very welcome man!!! I made this video because I got my first electric guitar when I was like 12 years old and it came with a really crappy licensed floyd. Back in the early 90s of course without internet, I was forced to learn this stuff. I just wanted to share it because I want everyone to avoid the pain of playing a guitar that is not setup properly or goes out of tune and things like that

      @@alveramps I understand, my favorite guitar I got from a pawn shop was a Westone Pantera X300 it was made sometime in the middle 80s, it was set up with the guitar and locking Tremolo system already set up. The guitar was beautiful and ever since I lost that guitar to the pawn shop I got it from I have not been able to find another. The guitar I have now is the Kramer Assault 220 black with the red inlay and trim. I have been trying to get one for about 4 years. I talked to Joel a sales rep at Sweetwater music. He said let me see what I can do. He got back in touch with me and said yes, Kramer stopped producing that guitar but there is 1 at the factory. The last one, I jumped on that right away. I have it and I am setting it up watching you. I am 60 yrs old 34:05 😮and have not played in 20 yrs, I knew one fine day I would be back, even though this is not a high dollar guitar, it should be because it plays so great and I knew it would. The price for one on ebay is crazy. Thanks so much you are very much a big help to so many of us. It is all coming back to me pretty quickly, again Thanks

    The best way to figure out how much slack to give the strings at the tuning pegs is taking the string, stretching it out straight, then grabbing it right under the nut and bring it back under the first fret, works every time for me on both that head stock and a one sided one

    • @alveramps
      @alveramps  3 месяца назад

      @IJustWannaSleep1 yeaa that is a cool idea!!! I do it taking as reference the distance of the tuners. Anyway the goal is just that the string ends up with a couple of turns once it is tuned to pitch

    *Really appreciate the demo, & your English is great =), **28:28** It's also important to know that some noises which your guitar makes unplugged doesn't make the same noises when you are plugged in. Also any guitar neck should be slightly concave ( have a slight bow ) and never 100% level / straight.*
    *Basically the closer the pickups are to the strings the more it affects gain due to the magnetic pull on the strings, the higher the pick up, the louder the sound, they should be about 2 - 3 millimeters away from the strings but see what you like.*

    • @alveramps
      @alveramps  4 года назад

      Yeah. The goal here is to make it as quiet as possible. Regarding to the neck relief I just set it straight with no strings on so when you put the strings and tune them to pitch tje tension will give the curvature we need. It is not going to be the exact amount of relief but it will be in the ballpark

    • @alveramps
      @alveramps  4 года назад

      With pickup height I normally start around 4/64 to 5/64 inch and tweak from there. When I raise them I hear more output and more treble.
