This 1983 Suzuki GS1100L is a recent rescue and was purchased as a parts bike with 6k original miles! However, I was able to get it running great and back on the road. It currently has an Ego "Wide Magna" handle bar, conventional Suzuki rear shocks, Rick's stator and regulator/rectifier. - Авто/Мото
My 1st BIG bike (my very first was it's 450L little brother), took me across Europe in the early '90s, absolutely loved that bike.
Very cool! I'm jealous of that ride.
Back in 1983, my 1st yr of college, this was my favorite bike. Until buying a 1987 Honda CBR1000F Hurricane with the Black/Monza Red rare color scheme. These GS1100L were nice bikes.
Thanks Neil! The Hurricane was an awesome machine as well!
I had a 1983 gs850.Loved it!
They're great bikes Richard!
Jon, thanks for posting! I too bought a 79 GS1000L, for parts for $175 including title (15 years ago) I been tweaking on it when I can, & its my most willing/used UJM . I since put a `81 E tank, and front fender on it, which required me moving the seat back aways, replaced the butchered mufflers, with untouched ones off a Harley Dyna, installed Yamaha DT 125 handlebars, Splitfire windshield, some used saddlebags,& drilled out the pilot jets a little. This Frankenstine now, is way more comfortable, usefull, & easier starting, Again keep up the Great Work!
Right on!
Thanks for taking the time to make the video.
Really nice looking bike. I like the fact that she's in (almost) original condition and not heavily modified cafe-racer type. (that's just my opinion and I get why people love cafe-racer, but I guess I'm and old-fashionned dude)
I'll gladly jump to your next vid' to listen to her.
Thanks Eni! I have seen a few really well done cafe bikes but most (unfortunately) are hack-jobs that ruin a restorable bike. I'm sure a purist would hate any deviation from stock but my passion is keeping the vintage bikes on the road. I don't hesitate to update the tuning, ride, handling, and braking of the vintage bikes so they can be enjoyed safely.
Love mine
My little brother owns one. All original. Still rides it. So fast. Last time I rode it I got off shaking. I'm talking scary quick.
They are fun even in today's era of hyperbikes!
Any 1983 GS1100L I have ever seen had a 140MPH speedo, yours looks like an 82 and older version. I might question the actual miles on this bike. Not that it's a big deal, just noting this. Thanks.
Interesting! I'll look int that.
Do you have any specs about how to tell a left from right intake manifold boots if they aren’t marked or the torque specs for attaching them? Currently restoring a 1982 GS1100 GL. TIA
Hi Amanda, you can look up part #s on www.partzilla.com
I couldn't find any torque specs for the boots.
Really beautiful condition. I have one in Metallic Blue but its not as good as this one. Everyone takes the big pullback bars off lol
Thanks! I don't know how people rode these with the stock bars. Unless you're a T-Rex, the stock seating position is very awkward.
Mine has GT750 bars although I did buy a set of the original ones incase but it would ruin the ride ability of it as it's quite a quick bike and good handling really.
@@Stevo736 I was shocked at how changing the bars improved the handling.
Which bars did you use? I'm currently trying to decide on which bars to get for my 81 1100. Thanks
I see you’re missing the grab bar I was lucky enough to find one for an 82 I just bought. Any ideas where to get some decals for the side covers?
You can try Partzilla.com or your local Suzuki dealership. Otherwise, It's the aftermarket or Ebay for nice side panels. I just ordered decals for another bike from Germany. I'm still waiting to see how they work out. Good luck.
Jon, what handlebars are those, width, and did you have to adjust the cables? I recently got a drag bar but is too short and messes with my choke cable. Thanks
They are the Emgo "Magna Wide" handlebars. I ordered a GS1100E clutch cable, but everything else is stock. Cheers
Where'd you find such a nice example? I'm a little jealous.
I doubt you would have been jealous initially. It was pretty rough cosmetically, no title, not running, etc. I only bought it as a parts bike for my GS1100G. However, I'm happy with the way it turned out in the end.
Ive been waiting to find a nice bike like that. 82 83 1100 gl. Nothing like it
Yeah, there is just something about the bikes of that time. I like riding the newer bikes but I love riding vintage.
I'll buy it from you lol 😂 very nice bike man
Thanks! Suzuki did a nice job on the old GS bikes.
Which handlebars did you put on?
Hi Tom, here's an Amazon link to the bars I used: amzn.to/44HLGSo

Does the bike tap out at 80mph or does it pass it , because it’s a 1,000 cc ??
Hi Nate, top speed is in the neighborhood of 130 mph. The government made a law in the early 1980's that vehicle speedometers could only go to 85 mph but it didn't limit the actual top speed.
@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 thank you for responding boss , I’m looking to buy a 1984 same exact model , I feel better now knowing this information.
@@natez4887 Right on!
what bars did you go with?
also wonder did you sell the old exhaust?
Hi Brian,
I went with the Emgo "Magna Wide" handlebar. I use that bar on several bikes and really like it. I did not sell the old exhaust but I may use it on another GS project.
@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 all the cables still fit/function?
@@briankendallRyanandBrian Yes, but it took some time to get everything routed and tidy. It would not hurt to use a shorter clutch cable and upper brake line.
@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 well I took your hint and waited until I got my bars as I had the headlight off. I re-routed the brake line to the left side of the t junction, also re-routed both the throttle and clutch cables to the opposite sides as the extra routing took up some of the extra stock cabl
e length.
I have 1 for sale clean title
All that time without starting the motorcycle. Fail!
Great comment. You will be happy to know that I've just made and scheduled a new video for the 1983 Suzuki GS1100L including the sound, project history and next steps for this bike. It will be up later today. It does cover some of the same info in this video but I realize people like to hear them run!
