(correction: I'm hearing from drummers that positional sensing does indeed work on the TD27 with the VH14 hi-hats. I haven't tested this myself, and I'm hearing conflicting information, but just to be safe I've begun the process to remove the 30 or so seconds of the video)

I just got the VH-14D to use with my VAD506 and the positional sensing definitely works with the TD-27 module. There's a clear distinction in sound between the center of the hats and farther out on the bow. I also notice the "squeezed hats" sound (or whatever you call it) when you go press the cymbals tightly closed. I haven't played them with the TD-50 to compare, but those features at least do something.
Does the VH-14D work with the older TD50?
@@Macho_Man_Randy_Savage I think it requires installing an update from Roland's website, but it should work.
@@YoungLink314 Thanks, so you don't need the TD50X paid upgrade to get full functionality on a TD50/27? I don't even use the internal sounds and trigger SD3.
@@Macho_Man_Randy_Savage Based on what's in the manual, the TD-50 without the paid upgrade should work basically like the TD-27 with the VH-14D. I don't know which module sounds do or don't work with the positional sensing, but it sounds like that won't matter to you as long as the positional data is sent over midi.
@@YoungLink314 Cool, thanks for explaining. I've just picked up a VH-14D to see if I like it. I've been waiting for a digital HH for years but as soon as I got my hands on a CY-14T I fitted it to a VH10 HHC and it's been pretty good...then the VH-14D got announced but didn't really seem all that groundbreaking...just a smaller CY-18R and same old HHC but if I can get a better response it will be worth it. SD3 is the only way, the TD50 sounds are atrocious and I don't wanna spend hours tweaking them to have a slightly worse version. There is slight latency with SD3 but the sounds are incredible.
Maybe, just maybe. Roland is flushing out their last models and will launch the edrums that DW made after they acquired them and brand them under roland name.
That would be interesting
Whole-heartedly agree.
Very expensive. I think your right. They are pushing to unload what they have and pay for what they just bought. I don't see anything here that makes my jaw drop. I'll keep my acoustic set, thank you. And if you buy these, in a few years you may want an upgrade to what is supposed to be the great innovation? I'd just as soon have a classic Ludwig, Gretsch, or DW acoustic kit than worry about whether or not I'm going to be able to play rim clicks, brushes, ride pings, half open hi hat, and a handful of other tasty sounds that seem to get passed by with electronic. Pitch bends?
Sooooo what’s the deal? U got faves’ ok? But I don’t have the resources to keep buying STUFF
Gimme somethin
Great video yet again. It would be nice to see the coaching/metronome functions of these kits.
This is amazing work man, so fast to update us fully too!
Thanks PEP!
I literally just got Roland VAD306 for $1000 less then the upgraded version VAD307 and I don't really care about the upgraded hardware and cymbals. I'm super happy with the drums and I'm glad I bought them while they were still in stock.
Very impressive, Justin. You are setting the curve in eDrum online news! Thank you.
Just splurged on the VAD307. I considered the TD27KV2 but could not justify the cost difference considering I will have them just for fun. I used this channel extensively during my research. I was debating between Alesis Strike Pro SE and VAD306 when I noticed the 307 had come out. After reading reviews on how bad the Alesis hi-hats are, and knowing the quality of Roland V-Drums, I went with Roland. I also played the Alesis kit at a local GC and the latency was very apparent as were the issues with the hi-hat. Regardless, thanks for putting out quality information. It was extremely helpful in making my decision.
I was just about to buy the td17 kvx until they released this.😅
I used to hate electronic drums. Then I got a set. Thanks for the content!
Aren’t they just so damn fun? Like I had a cheap alesis nitro mesh when I first started and even tho the sounds were- well- they were sounds it was so much fun to mess around with them
What set?
@@chezchezchezchez alesis nitro. It was free. I mostly use it to make midi tracks.
@@the_rustydoornob1164 thats what I have. Only no mesh. All rubber.🤘
@@j-hop91 still nice, glad ur having fun
should have talked about the price of last gen vs new gen. is it priced the same, or is there a big jump in price?
I don’t know bout you? But my money means something
Thanks buddy! You are truly precious in the edrum community!
Thanks man!
Thanks for the updates Justin. Question … will these td17 kvx2 new module upgrades be downloadable to my older td 17 kv module I purchased 3 years ago?
yay! the used market prices should reflect this as certain players upgrade lol
Literally bought the TD@27KV2 within a week of seeing this video in October, replacing my TD8 I hadn't played in years ! Thanks so much for your detailed and honest reviews - I love my new kit, it's finally like playing a "proper" kit again, and I've enrolled at Drumeo too. Completely fallen back in love with drumming again. Thanks so much and the Patreon channel is cool too !
Nice work as always! Crazy thought: do you think this kind-of-out-of-the-blue launch has anything to do with the fairly unanimous positive response to Simmon's new Titan 50? I know that particular drumset doesn't compete with most of the higher tiers listed here. But still, sounds like Simmons hit as close to a home run as they've had in a while. Roland had to taken notice there, Ya think? 🤷♀
I really didn’t see this coming at all but hey I’ll take it. If I had to choose a favorite though, it’d probably be the TD-27KV2.
Yeah man I had no idea Roland was planning this
Funny that u talked about edrum center cuz yesterday I saw on their channel “Td17kvx2 play samples” and I was just like “the fucking WHAT”
I'm honestly a little salty about the td-27kv2 since I bought my 27kv last year and if I wanted to simply upgrade my cymbals and get a digital hi hat I'd have to shell out probably over 1k. Meanwhile the entire kit is only 500 bucks more, idk its obviously a way better kit just wish I had a crystal ball so I could have been patient and waited.
On the other hand im very much looking forward to the firmware updates they seem pretty massive, even tho I mainly use a VST I am looking forward to tinkering with the module sounds again and ill give the roland cloud a shot I guess lol.
Yep hindsight is always brutal. Can’t that way after purchasing my first budget kit.
It’s all about perspective
It is a shitty and unfair update. People that bought the 506 for $4,999 with a VH-10 are watching people pay $5,399 to get the same kit plus the $1,150 VH-14D and the hardware from the 706.
@@pdxmetal Yeah I had to dish out for the vh14 and no new sounds, but there was no way to know and I wasn't gonna guess and hope lol. If I get some new sounds for the hihat all is fair. If they're still behind the td50x wtf
What about the addition of Bluetooth capability to the 27 module. That seems significant.
So is the extra €1200 worth for VAD507 over the VAD506? The VAD507 is €5333 in Europe and the VAD506 of€4100
Hay Justin, thx for the 8 yrs of videos. FANTASTIC...but i cant find the one that teaches us how to sample our acoustic drums for use with drum modules (TD50). THx Scott. Keep up the super shows!
Nothing beats my td50X
Don't get it. Why is the Roland TD-17KVX2 like 300 bucks more expensive than the regular TD-17KVX?
Where are the 2.0 Update for the td27 module? I can not find it.. thanks for this nive video!😘 I love your Vids!
Welcome to the Apple launch ..
I mean Roland
How likely can it be that they’ll show a new version of the td-27 this coming year ? Makes me feel like they’re trying to flush out their inventory because something newer is coming. What do you guys think ?
that could happen as i bought the module a week ago so they totally will give something new with my bad luck
Sorry Justin, I don't agree. The competitors are pushing Roland, not the other way around. If it wasn't for the competition they would still offer the TD-9
I just got the TD-17KVX new a month and a half ago and negotiated to get it for $1,600 with 15% off all the other items I purchased at the same time. The upgraded cymbals definitely seem nice but not sure if I would've paid an extra $500 for them (looks like that's the price of the KVX2)
I'm really confused about the price difference
Td 27kv2 best bang for the buck if you can afford it
has Roland kept they're word regarding v2 update for all module users?
Your video convinced me to pull the trigger as I was debating the TD27 against the Alesis Strike Pro SE. Hearing the hi-hat had been upgraded did it. I love the drums, but haven't been able to play as I got busy with my business, kids, life etc. I can not wait to get back into the drums once they get here. Thanks for being so quick to share this update from Roland!
I'm deciding between the two right now. I've been trying to research it and everyone seems to love that hi-hat. I'm more interested in better tracking, latency, etc than built-in sounds because I'll probably be using a drum vst at some point as well.
Well, i bought the VAD506 right before summer and i got it for a decent price. This new 507 is almost exactly 1000$ more, which is more than the cost of the hi hat, plus whatever i will get for the VH10 if i do decide to upgrade it, and sell it. It also got the VAD700 series stands though which are quite a bit nicer but not essential. Overall i think it's a very good update but it unfortunately comes with a steep price increase. So, luckily for me, i guess, i don't feel left out. I'll still be at a substantial saving even if i upgrade to the digital hi hat. And I'll happily take the module update off course.
I'm in the market for the td27 so now I'll wait for the td27 kv2
Great video! It’d be interesting to know the digital hi-hat on the TD27 since I was thinking about getting one.
Would you now recommend the TD17KV2?
Yeah it's a decent kit
Anyone like the tdkv50?
I just got the VAD503 for a great price (3.2k) thanks to the new models rolling out. If I decide that I want the digital hi hat afterwards, after selling the VH-10 included that'll still be a good 500 bucks less in total compared to the updated set. So overall, all I'm missing out on is the new hardware but I honestly couldn't care less. Very glad that they came out with this refresh right before I wanted to get a new kit!
You are the one guy I want my son watching and learning from!!!
Ayyyyyy this is awesome. I've been rocking my TD-27 for a couple years now, but I don't really know much about upgrading gear on E-Kits. If I just purchased the new cymbals coming out on the KV2, would they be functional on the current module ?
Yes
Please do a video for the Roland td 27kv 2 !!!
NICE 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I’m waiting to upgrade my td17 to the best flagship edrum there is. Do you really think they won’t do the td-60 or whatever for another two years? The td50 is good but seems lacking.
I've given up trying to predict these things man. I have no idea when the next Roland flagship is coming out
2025
I got the 17kv2 thanks to you
Ah yes finally. Good thing I waited
I am horrible at guessing when new drums will drop
Magnificent
Hi Justin! Thanks for the info. I got my TD-17KV in May 2022. I'm very happy with it. Have a nice day.
I found a YAMAHA DTX522K 5-PIECE ELECTRONIC DRUM SET on sale for $577.77. It's a demo/clearance set from a major retailer. Yay or Nay?
Cool stuff!
Lol I literally just bought my TD-17KVX yesterday and am picking it up in 2 days..... Bought the KVX over the KV for the better cymbals but not I could've just bought the TD-17KV2...
Oh shit, there goes my money 💸
Roland is an expert at that
Td 17 kvx is 1500. Worth pulling the trigger, or do I need gen 2?
same question/concern. i'm wondering if it's better to get the TD17 KVX for $1500 or a TD17KV Gen 2 for $1600
I'm looking for advice regarding a drum set I'm saving up for. I've been drumming for about 4 years, starting on a NUX DM-4 and have since upgraded to the TD-25KV. I love how my current drum set performs, but I'm at the point where I really want an acoustic looking drum set.
Problem is I live in Australia, so there aren't any conversion companies in my country like Jobeky, Drum-Tec or Field, and ordering from them gets a lot more complicated if something breaks on me since they're overseas.
I don't trust myself to build something myself.
Roland's VAD series are a little out of budget and I personally don't like how you can't change the shell wraps. If I'm paying eight grand for a drum set, I'd like to customise how it looks rather than just a boring mat black look. That and the thing costs $8,000 in Australia, not counting the extra Floor Tom and Crash Cymbal I'd want to add to it.
I've considered getting an actual acoustic drum set but still need the convenience of easily recording and something that isn't as loud.
I'm currently saving up for the Alesis Strike Pro SE since it's the closest to what I'm looking for being sold in my country that's within my budget. Love the acoustic sizes, the second floor Tom and third Crash cymbal. Just wish the pads were proper acoustic shells rather than half shells.
Does anyone have any suggestions for potential solutions I might not have considered regarding an acoustic looking drum set?
Sound is not a concern for me since I have Superior Drummer 3.
Hi Justin i have a question. I have Roland td17 drums And my kick drum mesh pad has a wrinkle above the drum patch, how can i fix this
The music industrie is amazingly slow in making progress. They have those Edrums since the 90's. Roland hasn't even bluetooth yet on their high end drums.
Waiting for years now to have a eDrum kit wich looks like a real one, has good sounds on it out of the box, has normal triggering, has all outputs seperately for front of house and is still affordable.
The Thomann millenium mps 1000 is a good start, but the sounds there are terrible.
Now with this upgrades from Roland is it clear, that we will have to wait some more years and hope they do it finally right.
Such a pain in the a...!
Sorry for my complaining. But it had to be said😄 have a nice day🤘🏻
Great video thanks for including the info on the firmware update. Stoked to see it roll out to the 17 module
I was hoping for td-17 firmware update. I was hoping Roland would increase the 17’s USB audio out from 2 channel L/R up to 8/10 channels of audio over usb like original version of TD-50 firmware. Td-27 has 28 channel audio over usb and td/50x has 32 channels. I love my td-17 however Often find myself wishing I had bought TM-6 pro last year on Black Friday or when S.W had them for same price 599$ brand new!!!!! TM-6’s 6 direct outs, 500 brand new one shot samples, easy/fast sound editing controls, individual inputs(no cable snake) TM-6 con’s: only 6 dual trigger inputs, no 3 zone ride support. I would like to upgrade to td-27 module however w/ Roland just dropping the new SPD-pro picking that up my main priority. Roland made the strike multipad Alesis could/should have made.
What are the swells/rolls like on the upgraded cymbals? Are they more responsive than the previous generation? Do they still sound like a bunch of individual strikes? This has been the biggest sticking point for me.
Thanks Justin.
I owned a roland kit and probably never will again. Costly and ugly with horrible sounds. I did a Jobecky kit for about a third the cost, did SD and while the kit is not as good, they look better and sound much better. In order to get the Roland to sound good you have to still buy and invest in everything to run SD but they look like crap...
Roland charges 4-7k for the industries worst looking and one of the worst sounding kits. There is no re-sale value because the premium is so high that even a year later you would have to take a 20-40% loss to sell it used. I bought my Roland kit used and it still cost more than my Jobely.
Hi Justin, hijacking this to ask you a question. Did you ever do a video on the V-Tour Series TD-6KX? I'm considering getting one at the moment, but there is very little info to be found except Rolands own marketing
What are your thoughts on buying the td27kv2? I'm looking to buy an edrum kit in the next few weeks.
Wow !!!
I just got the TD 27 module a month ago and I have the TD-17kvx.
This is good news, but I'm gonna want what ever is coming out next...lol
I only have the Roland digital snare so far, so I hope the HI-Hats and Ride come down in price because of this.
Yes dude !!!
Please let us know if the Digital Hi-hats are fully functional for the 27.
I didn't hear anything to the contrary about that.
Hmmmm....
Anywho...lol
Appreciate everything you do !!!!
Thanks !!!!!
:-)
Another great video drop Justin!
Looking for some advice please, anyone... I would love a TD27 but its over $5k in Australia and hard to justify so I'm also looking at a used TD30 (~3K AUD), is it still a good choice or should I just hold out for the TD27 later on? Thanks
What’s their cloud ? Can you access with previous kits ? I have the td 17kvx
I'm very curious if Roland and DW will be making some collab for a new product. I'm more curious on DW's design input and, who knows, maybe some DW hardware on Roland's next iteration of VADs. Imagine a VAD 806 (?) with DW or PDP Concept Maple styled lugs? Probably some DW inspired finishes?...
For now, I think their VAD refresh, with those subtle changes, looks cooler. Another thing they could've done was add more wrap colors to the shells.
Do you know If Roland is going to release New symbols so I can buy them separately and add them onto my TD27KV I know that digital high hats are already selling separately but I need to know on those new symbols
Anythoughts on getting a discounted VAD306 right now vs waiting to get the VAD307 when it's available?
awesome, i have a converted ekit with the TD-27 module at home. I also play on the VAD506 at church so I am looking forward to play with the upgrades.
I love how Roland still can’t figure out that the problem with the TD 17 aren’t the symbols but those god dang Tom pads. I hate those white rims.
Been doing research on edrums the past few days and your channel has been super helpful. I was really close to pulling the trigger on the kvx v1 but and now I'm finding out there is a v2. Do you think the upgrades are worth the extra $600? I'm a total noob when it comes to drums btw
What kit is being played from time mark 6:01-6:10? Thanks!
Which has the best feel like a real one I’ve played acoustic at unni jazz rock funk
Just wondering, when Roland offers the upgrades to the modules, pushing them to V-2, will that be a paid or free upgrade?
Hurts when you have the td17kv when the kv2 comes out. LITLLE bit of a kick in the face
But roland said they're updating the td27 module so I imagine they're gonna fix the hi hats
Put an emerge Pearl kick on a Roland kit
Makes it 100 times better
For around 400 bucks
These aren’t very big changes so I don’t really care that much but its nice to have a 14” ride and get the Vh14 already with the td27 and vad 500 line
Currently trying to decide on an upgrade for my pop punk covers. Love that I found this channel, so helpful 😊👍
Thanks for your hard work man. Cheers from a drummy in Oklahoma.
Even tho I got the old Td-17 kvx module will I be able to download the new kvx2 as a software update directly or do I have to get a whole new module with the new version?
Dude almost everything on edrum website is sold out!!
Is the 2.0 upgrade available now? I’m gonna have to look into this.
I for one am looking forward to that v2 update. what the heck is #3standard? Standard what!
Wait, so did you say I could update my td-27 module and get more sounds etc? What do I do plug in a usb cable and go to the Roland page?
does the new 17 kv have the same easy to navigate module interface like the old one that worked well for blind users?
I KNEW THIS WAS THE REASON FOR THAT 300 DROP IN THE TD17KVX
U get to it! Make it straight and I don’t foook around thank you
best news, my 4 year old drum brain is gonna get an update
Do you think Millenium Drums are any good?
no, get a Roland
Thanks a lot for keeping us updated.
Years ago we could only dream on having content like this, we would have to go and surf in message forums and magazines.
Great video as always! How do you feel about the new digital hats vs the vh10? Worth an extra $1000 for a hobby drummer that doesn't perform? 27kv gen 1 on sale for 2699 with a free $225 throne, or gen 2 for 3499. The new hats look great but I'd be really pissed if I spend that much for a refresh just to have the next model come out soon.
Which one did you go with ?
Another thing, the VAD506 has seen a significant 10ish% price decrease in the EU, with the launch of the 507. Overall i don't think the 507's extra 1500ish$ is worth it when you can get the digital hi hat yourself and save a whole lot of money for almost the exact same experience (minus the hardware upgrades). So I'd personally go for that one even today.
It's a good plan, the only thing is the digital hi-hats are hard to find in stock. At least in the USA
Damn, may need to look into 27kv gen 2!
just ordered my 504!
I use 2 TD-27’s and have 3 CY-16T’s, 2 CY-13RC’s, a CY-12, VH-10, the digital CY-18 ride, and then an ATV 18” ride, and lastly a pair of ATV 14” Hi-hats. Hence the 2 TD-27 modules. I also run Superior Drummer 3 but I don’t always use it because I love some of the sounds that I get from the TD-27’s.
By the way, every single e-cymbal, Roland digital snare, and Jobeky trigger purchases were made after I had gathered information from YOUR CHANNEL! 😂😂😂 Roland and ATV should pay you.😂
My kit is a beast. I built it after watching tons of your vids to gain the knowledge that was necessary to create it and honestly, the info you provided helped me not waste too much money buying bad gear. Thanks Justin!
Will the TD27 v2 software be available for the existing td kit?
As I talked about in the video, yes later this year the update will roll out for free to everyone
When we say cymbals are "lighter and thinner" - what does that mean for noise outside your headphones (I dont use an amp) - would lighter and thinner mean less of that horrible "thock thock thock" noise for the rest of the family??
The crashes are thinner, flexible, and are really not that loud. The digital ride, like all other e-drum rides, are thicker and louder. All rubber cymbals are going to "thock" but they are a hell of a lot quieter than metal cymbals like Jobecky.
i was literally gonna buy the td 27 kv in november, and now you are telling me i will get the hihats aswell????? holy fuck this is is awesome
big upgrade from my current broken alesis surge lmfao
same here. Not only digital HH but the new improved cymbals for the same price old kit was selling for. 😎
Is the 2.0 update for the td27 available now?
No, later this year
Thanks for your content. Do you know how to fix a bricked TD-17KVX lol
Thanks dude! Well the first thing I always try is a factory reset. It's under settings, maybe pretty far back. It wipes all your custom kits. But I has saved my butt several times
