Jimmy Tube That is horrible of your mom to do :( Parents need to teach proper pet care. It always amazes me when parents get children pets with no knowledge of care needs. Thank you for the helpful info. We inherited a Red ear slider from a family moving across the country. At first I felt 'stuck' with him. But he has grown on me! I didn't think he liked me at first. He always redecorates his man cave. He moves his rocks around a lot! I was shopping around for a 20 gallon long tank but I see I need much bigger. He likes me now, I think..lol. He's a cool dude. Turtles definitely will eat the gravel. No gravel or rocks small enough to be ingested should be used in the tank as the turtle can choke or clog their digestive tract with them and die. This is not uncommon and likely WILL happen if you keep gravel in your tank. Larger river rocks are fine as long as they are not smaller than the turtles head and are therefore impossible to swallow. Sand and "planted" tanks are 'typically' fine as the fine substrate will not cause blockages if ingested.

This video was so helpful thank you! I recently rescued a red ear slider recently, she’s about 10 years old. I’ve handled the care of younger turtles before but not one that’s a rescue. She also went to the vet, and the only issues was her shell that I’m working on currently. She has an issue of balancing being in the water too much or basking too much, is there any tips you could give?
idk if this is needed and you must have it if you have a turtle, but shouldn't you use dechlorinator for the water? I don't think you mentioned that in the video
Look up the "biological cycle of water in an aquarium". I always setup new tanks and let them run for at least a week before adding any aquatic life / pets. I never use chemicals in my tanks, unless I cannot avoid it for some extenuating circumstance.
All though your video is educational, forget getting a tank. You need a pool or pond. A large Plastic kiddy pool works great and is a whole lot cheaper. Also a cinder block works well for a basking are and the holes provide a hiding spot. A pond sponge filter works well or an aquarium canister filter are great for keeping the water clean. A ceramic heat emiter for the basking area is a good idea to heat that area between 85-90 degrees for most turtles. If the turtle is housed indoors then a U.V.B bulb as stated in the video will be needed, but if housed outdoors the sun works naturally. Do not put gravel in the tank pool or pond for turtles. Any bits of food or debris that collects in the grsvel the turtle wilk try to eat and can and probably will accidentally eat the gravel. This can cause impaction, damage to the digestive track, cause the turtle to not eat from feeling full from gravel in the stomach, and the turtle may choke on it. Food can be expensive A good quality Koi food is a bit less expensive. If you compare turtle food and koi food they have very similar ingredients and the vitimine content are usually the same. Also a few pieces of dog or cat kibble makes for a vitimine packed treat. If getting a proper tank set up like in the video it can cost $800.00+ or the kiddy pool set up can be done for around $150.00.
Jeff Frank I have done a lot of research on turtles and natural sunlight never works you need proper lighting and you can't use a cinderblock for a basking area has to be much bigger there basking area should most likely be made out of something like wood or sand something that's more comfortable for them because imagine if you had to lay on a freaking cinderblock what is wrong with you also a plastic kiddie pool works but saying to forget getting a tank is kind of stupid because the tank is better than a kiddie pool I'm sorry I'm just telling the truth
Alex Po A tank does look better, but an adult slider will need a several hundred gallon tank, and a pool that big is less expencive. Also a big turtle can crack the glass on a tank or scratch the acrylic on an acrylic tank. They do make large turtle tub enclosures that work great, but these are very expencive. Full sun if housed outdoors does work, just as if they were in the wild. Saying full sun does not work means all the wild turtles better go to the pet store and get better lighting. If you do not like a bare bottom tank, sand is a better choice than gravel for turtles. Cynder blocks do work. You can put several together to create a big basking area, and the turtle love to hide in the holes. The surface of the cynder blocks is not much different than the turtles basking on rocks in the wild. Sure you can create a dirt basking area, but then dirt will get into the water. You can also cover the Ccynder blocks with soft substate mats made for reptiles, however the roughness of the cynder blocks as the turtles climb onto them helps file their claws. For the most part I think your video is very informative and covers all the key points in keeping water turtles. I just know from years of experience how expensive keeping turtles can be and I just thought people may want a couple pointers on how to save some money when keeping water turtles.
Jeff Frank hey Jeff, Chloe's all about, said that lights are better than natural sunlight since she did a lot of research on it and tanks and lighting is better but with lamp lights are better, how do wild turtles live off of natural sunlight from the sun? That's what I asked
I've had my female turtle for 20 years. But this spring she is not very active and has not wanted to eat for a few weeks. Her color is wonderful and her shell is smooth and lustrous. She has always had brook stones in her aquarium and a basking place but lately she's not keen on basking very much. I'm wondering if she's eaten small pebbles like some owners say that a turtle may do....
You really should have a heater no matter what. The turtle dock with the magnet stays totally out of water. The one with suction cups is not my preferred one either.
Yeah, dock needs to stay 100% dry. I have videos on my turtle tanks and really like the Penn Plax dock I have. As for heater, it depends on what species and where they are kept. For example, my turtles at my home are in my 'pet room', which always stays around 75F. I keep my house around 70F, but, the pet room has many heatlights for my pets which raise the room temp. But yes, for most owners, a heater set around 75F is a good idea.
My dad picked up a tiny turtle in the back yard and brought it in the house for my mom back in the summer time. Now it is winter in Oklahoma and mom is sick and can not care for it. Will it kill it to put it outside this time of year?
I got a Palawan fresh water turtle 7. my dad just randomly bought them, I put them in the yard, with mini fence I put a mini pail for a pond2. what will I feed it, how often. how to know the gender. thank you I want to breed. these are critically endangered
how big is your pond also how big is your turtle And how to know your turtle gender is 1. Males have longer and skinnier tail 2. Males have a concaved bottom shell while females have a convex bottom shell 3. Male have longer nails Hope this help sorry i'm late
hi if someone can help me with my water turtle i would be really happy so i have a water turtle that lives with me for 14 years now and for some reason the idiot me decide that after all those years i should now look up a guide for it i don't even know how it survived all those years i feed it every day 7 shrimps and i usually change its water 3-4 days it lives in a medium size tank with some colored rocks and the water is enough to cover it shell where should i start to make its life better? (sorry for my bad english)
Two good things you forgot to mention. I have a turtle myself and sometimes it is good to feed them. Romaine lettuce and kale. Turtles need there greens as well. You could try and add one at a time from time to time. From one turtle guy to a next I hope it helps. Later
I put my turtles outside on the balcony and one of them managed to escape their tank by climbing onto another turtle and fell 2 storeys. That just happened like 5 mins ago and it has a pretty bad cracked shell
Atleast he felt like he was flying which is a turtles dream. He will always be remembered as a turtle that conquered heights & broke records. May he rest in peace
what if the turtle don't like to bask in the light that happen to my turtle , it will just jump in to the water and swim in to a different place in the tank .
Turtles that are basking turtles (like most pet turtles are) need a 100% dry basking are of proper temperature with UVB lighting. Is your basking are of proper temperature for your turtle species? Do you have UVB lighting? Is your tank a very large tank (40+ gallons)? Most pet turtles will need a 125 gallon or larger; however, even babies should have at least a 40 gallon, all properly setup. Filtration, water heater, basking area, basking light, uvb light, etc.. These animals have specific requirements which must be met for proper care. Sadly, turtles are some of the worst cared for pets. Most species of pet turtles should live 50+ years. Sadly, few make it past a year due to poor care. :(
Someone I knew had a turtle but was taking bad care of it so I managed to convince to give them to me.... problem I have no idea what kind of turtle it is and how to take care of it.... if anyone know a lot about different turtles and how to take care of them.... I WOULD LOVE YOUR HELP!! Thank you :)
Do you QT your new turtles? OR do you treat with anything as a preventative? I have a fish room with 35 tanks connected to a central sump, I treat all the fish I touch with meds-Erythromycin, Ick X and Prazi and QT for a week, and never had an issue. What should I do for a Eastern Painted Turtle I am adopting next week?
I’ve had my turtles since I was 10 and now I’m 18 but I barely relized how much care they need and now I’m actually trying to invest money into them but I don’t have much do you think a 60 or. 75 gallon tank would work and they are not used to being dry they are inside all the time last week I started to realize how much I loved them and how bad I felt for leaving them in this 30 gallon tank for a long time with no likes and only one dock
A good thing you can do if you live in Georgia or Florida is get a bigger size kiddie pool and put a pond filter on it and keep it outside year round ( if you're worried about winter you can bring them in but they should be fine) they will hibernate during the winter this works for most North American turtle species
Allyson Foster if you can afford spending $1-2k on your turtle then sure go for it. I’ve had mine for 4 years and i just upgraded their tank to a 50 gallon, I’ve spent way too much on them by now.
please help my turtle keeps on bitting my other turtle in the neck😥 the male is bitting the female and she has been gettting very hurt like bitts of blood😥PLEASE NEED HELP !!!!
I assume your tank is too small for them. They may also be of too different size. You need to separate them immediately, especially since one is bleeding! Separate right away!
Earthling1984 ok ya the male has a bigger shell then the girl but on the bottom of it shell i can tell that it is a boy and girl I also wonder if i seperate them and get a bigger tank which i was thinking of will he still bit her?
So I have all the basics down. Is there anything else I should know? I see some videos about cleaning their shells, do I need to do that? And if I add other creatures to the tank like shrimp , fish and a snail is that okay? They are all food but some of them can help keep my tank clean. Thanks :)

@@wernervonebrennac1031 I'm not even responding to you. Your comment just made me see the original comment again, and I am curious if he let that wild turtle go back and live its life. If someone wants a pet, they should only keep captive bred animals. Animals that were born in a cage. Never a wild animal that has it's own life out there. That is not fair to the wild animal to take it from its life and out it in a cage.
Although veggies are part of their diet, they need much more. Pellets are ok too. They should have some fresh (or pre killed frozen or freezed are ok too) seafood and insects. They need a variety.

Right,They are okay with just enough water to cover the shell.. And on more or less
same i had my turtle for 10 years and now i really want to give him the luxury he deserves I going to get my turtle a larger tank!
idk if this is needed and you must have it if you have a turtle, but shouldn't you use dechlorinator for the water? I don't think you mentioned that in the video
Look up the "biological cycle of water in an aquarium". I always setup new tanks and let them run for at least a week before adding any aquatic life / pets. I never use chemicals in my tanks, unless I cannot avoid it for some extenuating circumstance.
What temp should the water be like when you have a turtle? Extremely cold, Luke warm, or hot which I really don't recommend.?
Depends on species. For Red Ear Sliders, for insance, you would want water temperature between 76F and 84F.
@@earthling1984 how much is that in celcius

Bro u need the lamps
Have they died ?
They are not for heating they give the turtle vitamins that it needs to survive
What are good tanks to buy

Awesome vid! Btw Do you know the recommended GH and KH levels for turtle?
They don't care about ph, gh or kh, just make sure that you're parameters aren't at the extreme and that your ammonia and nitrite are at 0
All though your video is educational, forget getting a tank.
Jeff Frank big ones, ponds and kiddie pools are cool looking
Jeff Frank I have done a lot of research on turtles and natural sunlight never works you need proper lighting and you can't use a cinderblock for a basking area has to be much bigger there basking area should most likely be made out of something like wood or sand something that's more comfortable for them because imagine if you had to lay on a freaking cinderblock what is wrong with you also a plastic kiddie pool works but saying to forget getting a tank is kind of stupid because the tank is better than a kiddie pool I'm sorry I'm just telling the truth
Chloe's All about so how do turtles live in the wild?
How good is the penplex platform? Can the turtle get up to the platform based on your set up ?
Yup. Very good platform. I modified mine to float even better too.
Let's not talk about how Savage this earthling guy is to people's comments
You really should have a heater no matter what. The turtle dock with the magnet stays totally out of water. The one with suction cups is not my preferred one either.
Yeah, dock needs to stay 100% dry. I have videos on my turtle tanks and really like the Penn Plax dock I have. As for heater, it depends on what species and where they are kept. For example, my turtles at my home are in my 'pet room', which always stays around 75F. I keep my house around 70F, but, the pet room has many heatlights for my pets which raise the room temp. But yes, for most owners, a heater set around 75F is a good idea.
"get a 90 gallon tank." *has a 40 gallon tank* smh

My dad picked up a tiny turtle in the back yard and brought it in the house for my mom back in the summer time. Now it is winter in Oklahoma and mom is sick and can not care for it. Will it kill it to put it outside this time of year?

Looking at care videos now that my son has taken a liking to watching turtle videos. I think we're gonna stick with snakes lol
Cheryl Loke That's not good. Should take to a vet immediately if still alive.
Cheryl Loke is it still alive?
Atleast he felt like he was flying which is a turtles dream. He will always be remembered as a turtle that conquered heights & broke records. May he rest in peace
Cheryl Loke Is it alive please i need to know
Cheryl Loke So, it died I assume.
Where do they sell turtles at
Re the ratio given of inches of shell to tank size - do you mean inches of the plastron underneath or the top shell?
my turtle keep climb over the top when I had it all the way to the top they keep falling out so I lower it
I never owned a turtle but they look cool I see them by storm drains and in lakes around here.
what if the turtle don't like to bask in the light that happen to my turtle , it will just jump in to the water and swim in to a different place in the tank .
Where did you get your basking area?
Amazon. Search for "Penn Plax Turtle Dock". Make sure to only get the largest size.

I have one for mine too. I turn it into a pond with rocks around so it can climb out and be on the grass.
I have a room for my turtle ( don't ask )
Do you QT your new turtles? OR do you treat with anything as a preventative? I have a fish room with 35 tanks connected to a central sump, I treat all the fish I touch with meds-Erythromycin, Ick X and Prazi and QT for a week, and never had an issue. What should I do for a Eastern Painted Turtle I am adopting next week?
I have a 100g tank. What under water filter do you recommend?

I'm getting a turtle this is helpful thx
thank you! this helped a lot.
My turtles are not hibernate :( what should I do
Yomi Kun what?
Alright well I guess I'm not getting a turtle🐢🐢🐢🐢
Probably a good choice.
Allyson Foster if you can afford spending $1-2k on your turtle then sure go for it. I’ve had mine for 4 years and i just upgraded their tank to a 50 gallon, I’ve spent way too much on them by now.
Use turtle gravel NOT fish gravel ! ❤ and my float stays dry :)
please help my turtle keeps on bitting my other turtle in the neck😥 the male is bitting the female and she has been gettting very hurt like bitts of blood😥PLEASE NEED HELP !!!!
How big is your current tank?
its a 29 gallon tank or a 20gallon not sure
I want to get a bigger tank its just its so much 💰
Where do you put the food? Like the pellets? Do you put in in the water or on the basking area?
SpoopyLordCloud •ᴥ• I do both, but, most often up on dry platform.
Earthling1984 cool thank you! :)
So I have all the basics down. Is there anything else I should know? I see some videos about cleaning their shells, do I need to do that? And if I add other creatures to the tank like shrimp , fish and a snail is that okay? They are all food but some of them can help keep my tank clean. Thanks :)
Is that a red ear slider
Yes

Earthling1984 you mistook me
@@wernervonebrennac1031 I'm not even responding to you.
I getting a short necked turtle 90 gallons and I was wondering , can u only feed it vegetables or do u need to give it pellets?
Although veggies are part of their diet, they need much more. Pellets are ok too. They should have some fresh (or pre killed frozen or freezed are ok too) seafood and insects. They need a variety.

Great filters for sure. Output doesn't change based on position. Just needs to be fully submerged.
