    I have the same basking area for my turtle (I have the smaller one), UVB lighting, and a heat bulb. I have a water filter too. Jimmy Tube That is horrible of your mom to do :( Parents need to teach proper pet care. It always amazes me when parents get children pets with no knowledge of care needs.
      The turtle needs a huge tank, 100% dry basking area with UVB lighting and proper basking temperature for turtle species. Needs really good filtration and maybe a water heater, again depending on the species.
      You should have your mom read this and ask her to watch some turtle care videos.

    Thank you for the helpful info. We inherited a Red ear slider from a family moving across the country. At first I felt 'stuck' with him. But he has grown on me! I didn't think he liked me at first. I'm a cat person..period! We've had him about 1 1/2 months. He's about 5-6 inches and he's in a 10 gallon tank. I have been doing research on his breed like watching these videos. I like yours because it's easy..up front. I have the 2 lights you mentioned. I feed turtle pellet floating sticks & freeze dried red shrimp. He has a dry basking area. Rocks in his tank. He always redecorates his man cave. He moves his rocks around a lot! I was shopping around for a 20 gallon long tank but I see I need much bigger. He likes me now, I think..lol. He's a cool dude. He has character. His name is Turt. His prior family named him that. I tried renaming him Leo( Leonardo) but I still kept saying Turt. So Turt it is haha.. The Hubby & I are trying to learn how to properly care for this dude.

My dad couldn’t give a shit and my mum tried but didn’t want to spend on big tanks, proper filters etc so now 9 years later I’m taking care of my yellow the way he deserves. • @Ballistic_Turtle
      @Ballistic_Turtle 7 лет назад +22

      Turtles definitely will eat the gravel. No gravel or rocks small enough to be ingested should be used in the tank as the turtle can choke or clog their digestive tract with them and die. This is not uncommon and likely WILL happen if you keep gravel in your tank. Larger river rocks are fine as long as they are not smaller than the turtles head and are therefore impossible to swallow. Sand and "planted" tanks are 'typically' fine as the fine substrate will not cause blockages if ingested.

    You really should have a heater no matter what. The turtle dock with the magnet stays totally out of water. The one with suction cups is not my preferred one either.

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984  7 лет назад

      Yeah, dock needs to stay 100% dry. I have videos on my turtle tanks and really like the Penn Plax dock I have. As for heater, it depends on what species and where they are kept. For example, my turtles at my home are in my 'pet room', which always stays around 75F. I keep my house around 70F, but, the pet room has many heatlights for my pets which raise the room temp. But yes, for most owners, a heater set around 75F is a good idea.

    A good thing you can do if you live in Georgia or Florida is get a bigger size kiddie pool and put a pond filter on it and keep it outside year round ( if you're worried about winter you can bring them in but they should be fine) they will hibernate during the winter this works for most North American turtle species

    All though your video is educational, forget getting a tank. You need a pool or pond. A large Plastic kiddy pool works great and is a whole lot cheaper. Also a cinder block works well for a basking are and the holes provide a hiding spot. A pond sponge filter works well or an aquarium canister filter are great for keeping the water clean. A ceramic heat emiter for the basking area is a good idea to heat that area between 85-90 degrees for most turtles. If the turtle is housed indoors then a U.V.B bulb as stated in the video will be needed, but if housed outdoors the sun works naturally. Do not put gravel in the tank pool or pond for turtles. Any bits of food or debris that collects in the grsvel the turtle wilk try to eat and can and probably will accidentally eat the gravel. This can cause impaction, damage to the digestive track, cause the turtle to not eat from feeling full from gravel in the stomach, and the turtle may choke on it. Food can be expensive A good quality Koi food is a bit less expensive. If you compare turtle food and koi food they have very similar ingredients and the vitimine content are usually the same. Also a few pieces of dog or cat kibble makes for a vitimine packed treat. If getting a proper tank set up like in the video it can cost $800.00+ or the kiddy pool set up can be done for around $150.00.

      Jeff Frank I have done a lot of research on turtles and natural sunlight never works you need proper lighting and you can't use a cinderblock for a basking area has to be much bigger there basking area should most likely be made out of something like wood or sand something that's more comfortable for them because imagine if you had to lay on a freaking cinderblock what is wrong with you also a plastic kiddie pool works but saying to forget getting a tank is kind of stupid because the tank is better than a kiddie pool I'm sorry I'm just telling the truth

      Chloe's All about so how do turtles live in the wild?

    • @Iamadrummer
      @Iamadrummer 7 лет назад +3

      Alex Po A tank does look better, but an adult slider will need a several hundred gallon tank, and a pool that big is less expencive. Also a big turtle can crack the glass on a tank or scratch the acrylic on an acrylic tank. They do make large turtle tub enclosures that work great, but these are very expencive. Full sun if housed outdoors does work, just as if they were in the wild. Saying full sun does not work means all the wild turtles better go to the pet store and get better lighting. If you do not like a bare bottom tank, sand is a better choice than gravel for turtles. Cynder blocks do work. You can put several together to create a big basking area, and the turtle love to hide in the holes. The surface of the cynder blocks is not much different than the turtles basking on rocks in the wild. Sure you can create a dirt basking area, but then dirt will get into the water. You can also cover the Ccynder blocks with soft substate mats made for reptiles, however the roughness of the cynder blocks as the turtles climb onto them helps file their claws. For the most part I think your video is very informative and covers all the key points in keeping water turtles. I just know from years of experience how expensive keeping turtles can be and I just thought people may want a couple pointers on how to save some money when keeping water turtles.

      Glad to help. Make sure the tank is setup at least 2 weeks before getting your turtle. The tank water needs to cycle. During this time, check that you have proper UVB and basking temperature. They need a 100% dry basking area. Use a thermometer and make sure everything is perfect. A single turtle (depending on species) is going to need at least a 75 gallon tank. So, you will need to decide what type of turtle you want, and get the proper tank size. Something like a painted turtle or musk turtle is fine in a 75gallon. Something like a red ear slider needs at least a 125 gallon. The tank setup will be expensive, probably around $400 or more once you get the tank, filter, heater, lighting, etc..

I have river stone about two inches thick at the bottom and the turtles share their tank with platties, Mollys, swords, a couple crayfish, a few algae eaters and some snails. It isn’t an added chore. I want their environment as realistic as possible. I really don’t mind cleaning the river stone substrate. They love the stimulation of their tank with their driftwood etc. The above tank condos are amazing. I highly recommend them. I got mind from Amazon. @earthling1984  6 лет назад

      Turtles that are basking turtles (like most pet turtles are) need a 100% dry basking are of proper temperature with UVB lighting. Is your basking are of proper temperature for your turtle species? Do you have UVB lighting? Is your tank a very large tank (40+ gallons)? Most pet turtles will need a 125 gallon or larger; however, even babies should have at least a 40 gallon, all properly setup. Filtration, water heater, basking area, basking light, uvb light, etc.. These animals have specific requirements which must be met for proper care. Sadly, turtles are some of the worst cared for pets. Most species of pet turtles should live 50+ years. Sadly, few make it past a year due to poor care. :(

      Your turtle needs a proper very large tank, 100% dry basking area of proper temperature your turtle species, UVB lighting, and of course proper filtration and proper water temperature. All this should be setup and tested before you get your turtle. The water also needs to cycle before adding any aquatic animal to it. I suggest you also check out my newer turtle video: ruclips.net/video/UeDIFn1Z0qM/видео.html

    Thinking of adopting/saving an old turtle my relative saved but can't keep for too long. Thanks for giving me a good overview of what responsibility it would entail. Pretty sure he has a big tank but no dry basking area atm :(

      Saved from where? Needs a proper dry basking area immediately.
