The frustrating thing about the bland hero in this movie is that the real life Themistocles was quite the trickster character with lots of plots and gambits. He even pretended to defect in order to lure the Persians into the battle of Salamis. If Leonidas was like Achilles, than Themistocles was Odysseus.
Leonidas was like Achilles? I don't think so; Leonidas didn't sulk in his tent because he was denied Potential Sex Slave #113. Leonidas was probably more akin to Hector, a doomed moral victor valiantly defending his home, family and way of life, or perhaps Diomedes, who would take on near-impossible missions using equal parts cold intelligence and berserker rage.
Yeah, I’d say Leonidas was more like Hector than Achilles Achilles was extremely proud and had bad relations with the generals of Greece (which came to be because of his lack of resolve to conquer Troy), Hector wanted to protect his home at all costs Achilles was an invader, Hector was a protector
I think that part of the problem with Rise of an Empire was that the writers relied too heavily on the audience already having a working understanding of the war and the key battles in it, whereas the original assumed that the audience had never heard of this war.
@@32shumble It's hard to get invested when all you are told is "these are the good guys, those are the bad guys". Things need context or else there are no relatable stakes to captivate the audience. 300 took time to establish the stakes, what they were fighting for and where; Rise of an Empire didn't. For all you know most sea battles in the movie were fought somewhere in the open sea when reality is they were fought in many different key strategical places along the coast that prevented the persians from landing behind Leonidas's back during the events of 300. That's pretty important context if you ask me.

The main character only resisted her after the deed was done or at least after he got his fair share of fun so at that point he basically won that challenge already.
The biggest problem this movie had is that it shouldn’t have ever existed. „300” is not a reenactment of a historical battle. It’s a comic book adaptation. And there was no comic book sequel to draw from. The reason why the first movie works, is because the filmmakers didn’t even have a script or storyboards, they just used the awesome Frank Miller art. Frank Miller’s writing and graphic style is so astounding and awesome, that the movie basically made itself. The original 300 was an adaptation, not a start of a series.
Are u seriously saying that the battle of Thermopylae never happened the same as the battles in the sequel, do u even know of the history of the Greek/Persion wars. Yes, 300 and the sequel was adapted from a comic well the first not sure about the sequel, but to say the Battle's did not happen is utter nonsense, It did happen as the history was real get your facts right before talking nonsense.

Your Live Die Repeat video was probably my favorite this year. I always loved the concept since the movie came out and you did a fantastic job of explaining why it’s so enjoyable and how expertly it was done. I mean seriously a movie that’s essentially just restarting a video game mission until you eventually win is such a cool concept for a movie
I forget that this sequel was made. And I went to the theater for this too. It wasn't horrible but nowhere near as good as the 1st one and was unnecessary looking back at it
It was a good idea but they over did it with the CGI and no one really cared for these new characters, the whole idea of this was to follow the Spartans
@@Monkehrawrrr same. I wouldn't want every "historical" film to be in that style but every now and then a hyper stylized action film is good for ones health.
True but I believe it was a on purpose. Like it's not supposed to look real it's there to make sure the audience it's getting a story told not watching "reenactment" of a historical battle.
For the ‘unreliable narrator’ thing, it would have been really cool if it had been Aristotle telling the story to a young Alexander the Great, which would have both allowed more craziness in the movie and also potentially set up a sequel.
I’d go for a young Pericles hearing it from a relative who fought in the war, tying into a sequel focused on the Peleponnesian War, with Plato narrating (on behalf of Socrates) to Aristotle, flash forward to Aristotle telling the story to Alexander. Alternatively the narrator could be Lysander talking to Xenophon to plug a future movie based on the Anabasis. You’ve got two movies to set up the two juggernauts of Classical Greece, the natural next step is to pit them against each other before returning to the Persians.
The hilarious part about this movie was that Themystockles was so devoted to the navy in this film but historically he does actually join forces with persia after the final battle shown in the 2nd movie. If a 3rd film were created I can see them following up and showing this betrayal.
I mean, he was devoted to the navy because that's historically true. During his proiminence as a politician he always advocated for a strong Athenian presence at sea. He was the one responsible for building the fleet of triremes that ended up saving Athens and personally commanded the combined Greek navies at Artemisium and Salamis. In fact, during Salamis he sent a messenger to Xerxes to trick him into sailing straight into a trap. He joins the Persians but much after his victory at Salamis, because he was ostracized by rival athenian politicians due to the power and prestige he had gained after Salamis. Eventually, the Spartans involved him in a plot he had nothing to do with in an attempt to have him executed, and he was exiled from Greece altogether, before turning to the Persian Empire and serving under Xerxes's son Artaxerxes. It wasn't a betrayal nearly as much as it was an act of desperation. It was also common practice at the time for exiled Greeks to seek refuge in Persian courts and exiled Persians to seek refuge in Greek courts. Not to mention that after Themistocles joined the Persians, the Persian Empire was in decline and never invaded Greece again, fighting instead a losing war against the advancing Greeks for another 30 years, which ironically found much success thanks to the naval dominance they achieved after Themistocles destroyed much of the Persian fleet at Salamis. After both Themistocles and his rivals' deaths, Themistocles's reputation in Athens was restored and he was lauded for his actions during the Persian Invasion and for spearheading the golden age of Athenian naval power.

"...with my army that I allowed you to command," - A good comeback by Xerxes Seriously though, if Xerxes never knew her well enough, he would have had her executed on the spot for disobeying the will of the "god-king", rather than just bitchslapping her like that
They ruined Xerxes in the second movie. The point of his character was that (although being a huge man learned in sorcery) he's no god, just a human who, in his arrogance, claims to be a god. This is shown when Leonidas makes him bleed at the end of the first movie, and Xerxes observes his bleeding hands in absolute schock, no more able to hide his mortality and human weakness. Then in the second movie they retconned it by saying explicitly: "yeah hes a real god", and showing his ascension into godhood. They butchered his character just like that.
Nah I think Leonidas was so badass and iconic in the 1st film that there was no point in a second film without him. Themistocles ended up being written as a lesser copy of him.

Your Live, Die, Repeat video breaking down how to nail concepts in a film is probably my favorite/most rewatched video of the year. Your ability to take movies and draw out useful practical and clear lessons from them has always been the best strength of your channel, and I think that concept video does a fantastic example at highlighting these strengths.
Terminator Salvation - The Reboot that Bankrupted a Franchise was a fantastic video :) Your spot on commentary made it must-see! Don't change, just keep going, you have a style that is yours and separates your from the rest of the pack.
Salvation was okay, closest to a good post sequel the franchise has gotten (if somewhat bland). I'm a fan of the series though and found stuff I liked in all the films as middling genre entries despite their flaws. Genisys had interesting ideas but terrible casting. Dark Fate set a nice gritty tone, presented solid action, and finally brought back Sarah but felt like it tried too hard to copy T2 and just felt unnecessary. T3 had Arnold still near his prime and some cool practical FX but completely missed the point of T2 in favor of some contradictory fatalism.
@@spaceghostcqc2137 You throw all those sequels into a blender and you're getting a great T3, on their own they're a mess. Salvation's still the best and should of gone with the original ending of Having Bale=Connor have to live on in a terminators body, as this way he became what he hates, to inspire people, as they'd loose the little hope they have if he died as well.

9:01 "I will not judge you." What? That ridiculous modern U.S. expression. It's even worse than if you throw in "okay" in a historical setting, which all moviemakers know not to do.
Your point about that tactics being understood by the audience is one I’ll admit I never considered. Historically, the battle of Salamis (the very loose inspiration for the movie) is considered one of the most important battles EVER. But they never bother to tell the audience why
My favorite video this year was your Thor Love and Thunder video; I can't believe a big-budget mainstream film could get away with so many flaws, including the villain. Films like Thor Love and Thunder is the reason why films like Top Gun Maverick and Everything Everywhere All At Once stay on top.
Me, who live in a country where big budget mainstream movies are the only reason people goes to cinema, which basically makes said mainstream movies hits box office: That sounds awesome...
My biggest problem with Love and Thunder is how similar yet completely different it is from the prequel Thor: Ragnarok. While both are directed by the same person, Ragnarok managed to combine both its jokes and plot seamlessly, and managed to have an intriguing villain to boot. Compare that to its successor.
My favorite part of your videos unironically this year were your ad reads. I love how you make a point in your video and then when the ad read comes into the video you tie it in to the message that you're trying to convey by giving us an example. You're genuinely the only RUclipsr I don't skip ad reads for and that in of itself is an accomplishment.
I dunno. I don't think this review did this movie justice. The thing that we love about this movie is that the heroes were simple average farmers. They werent elite trained Spartans. And they werent the massive Persian navy. Just average men standing up for their nation. Something a lot of us can relate to. They were just called up to fight and did just that without hesitation. Not one backed down. Just like the Spartans. Not one of them didn't give it everything. Just like the Spartans. In a way the Athenians and Spartans are comparable against the same enemy Not building a back story for the main hero wasn't a big deal because the opening battle established him as a strong leader. He was charging headfirst into battle and always did the most damage. He never backed down from a fight. Even though he wasn't a known commodity like the Spartan king he stood before the masses, went into enemy lines and implemented strong battle plans. People didn't give this movie enough credit because their expectations were set so high by the previous one so the trilogy was cancelled. Now instead we have to watch garbage marvel movies with CGI that was done by high school students. Really puts it into perspective how good this movie was.

I liked "Why Rings of Power Failed where House of the Dragon Worked | One v One" cause you pretty much put into words why I felt RoP was so lackluster in comparison to HotD. I have been watching you for a while and I can say that your content is always insightful, here's to another year of great videos!
That was such a good breakdown and highlights one of the major reasons hollywood is failing right now, too much focus on things that don't matter, not enough focus on making actually interesting and relatable characters.
I hated that video since I managed to enjoy RoP but hated HotD with passion. I wasn't this angry with Filmento since his positive video about Man of Steel
My favourite video was about the movie Bullet train, as I only heard about it from your channel and from what you said sounds really awesome. The breakdown of that was detailed. Favorite video you made this year is Ambulance (2022). I had my doubts about it, specially because of Bayhem. But after seeing your videos on how Bayhem can be when used correctly, my dad and I gave Ambulance a chance. So surprised on how excellent and entertaining this movie was, we wished we would have seen it in theaters. Thanks Filmento - keep up the great work!

This was my favorite filmento as I feel this movie was just forgotten by so many. You said the big three things missing here are a strong hero, exaggerated world, and a clear logistical essence; I instantly think of the 2011 film 'Immortals' which I would say has all of those but was also forgotten. Other things were bad with it sure but seems like that was the last of the ancient world synder epics.
My favorite video of yours this year was the "I, Frankenstein" video. I've forgotten to have seen this movie (thank god), but you have presented a way for us really to enjoy it. It`s really hillarious! Thank you!
I love your videos. You’re able to educate on film writing in an entertaining way, and you discuss films that a lot of other people don’t touch on. It’s fantastic!
I'm gonna go ahead and pick the RoP vs HotD video as my favorite, mostly because of first of all I care about both shows and secondly you described both shows perfectly from a single episode. I felt like RoP was just off and while I enjoyed it, I didn't care for it that much, but my family seemed to love it. I do have to admit, recognizability is a huge part in this, simply because while I did watch almost all of your videos this year, I didn't know every movie/watched every movie, which sometimes makes it harder for me to remember the video. I do have to say though, while I of course have to rely on your word to form an image of the movie, I feel like you have a very good way of explaining a movie, despite not having seen it and judging the movie, that I can truly form an image of what it's like. If I have watched the movie, I always find myself being impressed with how you can conjure up a accurate impression of what the movie is like, without having seen it. You also seem to perfectly word those things that you pick up on, but don't consciously realize, giving comparisons that can perfectly illustrate what you thought somewhere in the back of your mind, but can't put into words. @MuskIsABuffoon (yes, throwaway account because I don't care for Twitter lol)
Honestly it's hard to say. Out of all of them, your video on Jurassic Park Dominion was my favorite. Major reason was because I watched it soon after watching the movie, and you were able to perfectly articulate many of the issues I had (and many I didn't realize). It's just a tough call. Some of your videos like Thor Love and Thunder I watch because it's something I know I won't be watching, but still want to see how it did. Then there's others I specifically watch to gauge your impression with mine.

The 300 movie was basically a comic book story turned into live action. The dumbest thing about the 300 movie was the spartan warriors fighting with open bare chests instead of wearing metal breast plates because it looked cooler.
My favorite vid is your breakdown of Black Adam. I thought the film was entertaining, but I felt something about it was off, and I couldn't explain why I felt that way. Then you go and articulate it so well.

I honestly really like all your videos I think there is always something to learn from each one, but if I were to pick a favorite it would have to be the Love and Thunder critic. I knew I didn't enjoy the movie but I couldn't figure out why and you helped make it clearer.
Your Top Gun Maverick video was great. Really broke down the concept of a movie without a villain, something that I had never really thought about or understood properly until you broke it down. Good job!
Honestly, hearing about this movie for the first time here, I was more invested in the success of Eva green's revenge. I guess, it says a lot about the story
Live Die Repeat - great analysis of a hugely underrated movie which was my favourite of 2014 even over Guardians. I watch two movies once a year, one is Tremors and the other is this - two pieces of masterfully executed genre comfort food.

In historical context, the naval battle in the sequel is the major contributer which turned the tide of the war for Greece against Persia. It was a far more important battle than that of 300. But the problem was that the movie could not depict it's importance over that of the 300 spartans
It's a tough call, because I follow your channel to learn about filmmaking and storytelling, and you cover that really well in your videos. Your Eternals video was great, the whole movie I had the feeling that something was missing and whenever I have this feeling about a movie you happen to make a video about it and address exactly my problem
My favorite video was on the failure of thor love and thunder. I pretty much agree on most things you talk about and it really opens my eyes on why I feel certain ways about why things fail. My favorite video of yours this year was the Doctor Strange 2 one. I definitely wanted better for Wanda and think they could have done her justice as a villain if they had taken from the comics more. Thank you Filmento for saying you like me, that means a lot to me, has been a while since someone said it to my face. It nearly makes me want to subscribe to you. Anyway, it's hard to choose my favourite since all of them are great, but I think if I had to choose I'd say it's "Why No Way Home Worked where Spider-Man 3 Failed | One v One", although I might be biased because of MCU (and I liked your video about Wanda too, just for the record).

@@geekdom5959 I don't know if it's a serious question, but I will answer seriously anyway. The defeat by the Turks was a process took around 400 years, so you can understand there are far too many reasons which can be mentioned. Answering the part of the question about strength, though, is pretty easy. The physique of Greeks in 480 BC was very different from that of Greeks in 1453 AD, almost two millenia later. The hoplites in 480 BC were a product of natural selection and evolution through 6-7 centuries of constant war. The Greeks of the Byzantine armies were usually farmers who on average either had never fought in their lives or had fought once. The Byzantines relied too much on mercenaries. The other thing is traditions. The hoplites of classical antiquity had trained and exercised in gymnasia in their youth, and valued exercise later on, while Byzantine Greeks did neither. The last thing is that hoplites were the heavy infantry of their age, so they were stronger, both because of natural selection, and because of just carrying all that armor and weapons on them.
I understand why the sequel failed but I still thoroughly enjoy watching this movie as much as I loved watching the first 300. The music alone is just something to behold.

Exactly. The whole point of the first one was that there wasn't a need for another one.
everything is subjective. Personally i liked this movie way more then the first one. Superior battle choreography, much more likable protagonist...

The blood looks as good as it did in 300.

Eva Green's plots are the only reason people talk about this movie.

'plots' 😏

Artemisia is by far the most interesting thing about this film.
Also a really sympathetic backstory as well.
funnily, her backstory was completely made up, real Artemisia wasn't nearly as likable. And in reality she did, in fact, fled that battle.
Totally agree and deserves a movie itself.
Artemisia was what they say about a great woman being behind a great man. Except in reality she was totally useless and only rose to being in that position due to her wealth
And totally inaccurate
Oh I know. Her real backstory was also interesting though TBF.

"...with my army that I allowed you to command," - A good comeback by Xerxes
Seriously though, if Xerxes never knew her well enough, he would have had her executed on the spot for disobeying the will of the "god-king", rather than just bitchslapping her like that
Film is absolute trash and she's part of it. She carried nothing
Rodrigo carried his role in both films, unfortunately he had a small role
@@Civilmonkey1 I think it's pretty obvious why we loveed 300, it's because of Leonidas.. everytime he is on the screen is absolute Cenima, now he is dead.. it's hard to make another main character like him

Yeah pretty much. That's why you need the original cast and director.
Still the best one since T2
I like that in rise of an empire they tried to stitch both movies together as if they were happening at the same time.

Me, who live in a country where big budget mainstream movies are the only reason people goes to cinema, which basically makes said mainstream movies hits box office:
That sounds awesome...
Try Bullet Train too.
How incredibly insulting to Everything Everywhere All At Once.
@@MM-ef2yy why...? The movie was amazing
Best thing about this movie is undoubtedly the music
not only this, however awesome. Battle choreography was way better then in first one. +it has almost no spartans, and this always good.
In a way the Athenians and Spartans are comparable against the same enemy
Not building a back story for the main hero wasn't a big deal because the opening battle established him as a strong leader.

RoP had a lot of good ingredients but a bad recipe.
It was a bad Tolkien fan fiction it makes GoT season 8 look like a masterpiece
That was such a good breakdown and highlights one of the major reasons hollywood is failing right now, too much focus on things that don't matter, not enough focus on making actually interesting and relatable characters.
I hated that video since I managed to enjoy RoP but hated HotD with passion. I wasn't this angry with Filmento since his positive video about Man of Steel
My favourite video was about the movie Bullet train, as I only heard about it from your channel and from what you said sounds really awesome. The breakdown of that was detailed.
Zack Snyder wanted to make a 300-style George Washington movie that was mystical. I hope we get that movie one day.

In historical context, the naval battle in the sequel is the major contributer which turned the tide of the war for Greece against Persia. It was a far more important battle than that of 300.
But the problem was that the movie could not depict it's importance over that of the 300 spartans
I love your concept of exaggerating the mythical elements. It really was something that made the first very interesting.

The more I think about it the more I am actually glad Hollywood isn't likely going to try and milk this series more because I just don't see in the current climate of always pushing **Cue Drinker** "The Message" that something like either of these films could be made.
