- Lots of chugging noise and huffin’ ‘n chuffin’ and hissing and steam whistles with this one! I was spending a few days in Cumberland, MD and caught the world’s largest operating compound-mallet steam locomotive in action. It was ready to depart for Frostburg, MD along the @westernmarylandscenicrailr1683.
This engine is now the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad’s #1309. Previously, it was a C&O Railroad steam engine and was hangin’ out in Baltimore awaiting a restoration. It was built in 1949, kinda late for a steam engine, and was used to pull heavy coal loads. - Развлечения
She is no lady - she is a beast, and a magnificent one at that! Lovely clip - pity no loco motion! Congrats from beautiful Cape Town, South Africa!
Thanks for tuning in! Cheers!
1309 is the world’s largest regular operating steam locomotive. 4014 is really the worlds largest steam locomotive operating but only in occasional service.
Declaring it the largest depends on the criteria for claiming "largest".
Tractive effort.
Weight
Number of wheels
And many others.
It certainly has an impressive looking smokebox front!
I believe what makes the 1309 unique is that it is a compound articulated mallet. It may not be the biggest or heaviest or strongest but its a compound using steam twice.
I think it's the biggest mallet type still running. They do have Garret types still in service but that's another breed entirely.
the fact that big boy is operating even in a limited capacity dictates that it is the largest operating steam locomotive in country by default, there is no criteria that dictates how often it has to operate, simply that it does, that being said, as impressive as 1309 is, it is not the largest operating steam locomotive.
@@Dichuz91 it is however the largest operating mallet type
What a beautiful lady. Just sitting there she sounds as powerful as she is. I wish she had been there, when I visited Cumberland back in '08! ❤🎉
The constant thumping is the steam-powered air compressors and water pumps mounted on the front of the boiler. The whirring is the steam-powered turbogenerator.
i'll pick the nit too: 1309 - largest operating articulated "MALLET" compound steam locomotive. 4014 - Largest operating steam locomotive period.
Big boy has more wheels is longer and heavier but I still love 1309 absolute beautiful locomotive
It's a beast and a work of art. Thanks for sharing.
Got to ride behind her fall 2022, awesome beast! Hope they get the piston work done and back on the rails soon.
I can just smell the coal and this was a time in history when these locomotives weren't a problem when the environment was cleaner!
Awesome video thanks for sharing 😊👍
If challenger #3985 was still operational #1309 would be the 3rd largest operating steam locomotive in America but the challenger is out of action for the time being making this compound mallet the 2nd largest operational steam locomotive alongside UP bigboy #4014.
...... and after a year of operation she was turned into a glorified paperweight / display piece because the RR never should have bought her in the first place!! TrainOrders forums have the full scoop on real reason why she "needs repairs;" but basically it boils down to the RR not having the BOTH the space (milage) and the tonnage (for her to pull) to properly "break in." So her piston glands / seals are properly working which is leading to the current admin to declare "1309 needs new rods and pistons!! Oh and other work! Please give us more money!!!"
Cool engine 👍♐♐♐♐
Both of the operating 4-8-8-4 locomotives are operating in excursion service only. Neither of these locomotives including the Challenger class 4-6-6-4 engines operate in "regular" scheduled service.
there is one singular operating 4-8-8-4, not two.
THITS TRAINZ STEAM IS COOL
Someone needs to correct the false title. The WM 1309 is NOT the largest operational Steam Locomotive. The UP 4014:Big Boy is.
bigboy 4014: this is big brain time
And I would say Australias's Garrett 6029 is also larger.
The big boy and Challenger
they're not compound. And the challangers aint running atm
they are single expansion articulateds
World's largest?
UP 4014 wants to have a word with you.
World’s largest compound-mallet in regular operation* - tough to fit all in the title!
it is the biggest. Big boy i snot compund.
Big Boy is NOT a Compound Mallet, Big Boy is a Simple Articulated,
Compound Mallets have 1 set of High Pressure Pistons which use the steam first before sending it to the other pair of Pistons which are low pressure.
a Simple Articulated engine just sends steam to all 4 cylinders simultaneously, no reuse of steam.
(and if your wondering, yes it's possible to have an engine that can switch between the two styles, the N&W's Famous Y-class engines are a famous example of such a design)
4014: Hold my beer! 🙂
@@James_Knott 4014 is not a compound Mallet, 4014 is simple aritculated
What is the sound ?
Steam! : )
Its heart beat.
Air compressors
Railroad youtube has infected my brain so much that my first thought was "why is she in the ES&DT livery?" XDD
no it isn't 4014 is the biggest
How does it feel to be wrong while making click bait titled videos?
So why are we watching the worlds largest steam engine doing nothing.
Listen to her breathing
