If you don't believe people still love steam engines, just look at all the cars pulled over and people with their phones, taking pics. This is prime farming season, and even the tractors paused in their work to watch! Great video. Thank you for posting it.
Spectacular footage. Even after three years of it in operation, I am still in awe of the fact that 1) a Big Boy is running in the 21st Century and 2) that men of this country actually constructed something this powerful and efficient. If anything, 4014's runs in the flatter areas have shown just how utilitarian its hauling capabilities truly are, this thing can literally highball in addition to conquering grades. Perfect engineering.
As long as the rails run as straight as possible. Bigboys don't like curves very much. U.P. ran these locomotives on long straight runs in the American West.
It's so nice to see a piece of engineering art draw such a diverse awed audience - women, children, sr's, etc. It really is quite a piece! A crowd pleaser.
I love this magnificent piece of beauty, engineering and grace in motion!! Years ago I was fortunate to see,and touch this great locomotive, what a privilege. Just watching this brings tear to my eyes! A living breathing machine!
The first person I thought of to share this video with is my dad. He just passed away two months ago. He would have had a huge smile on his face watching this. He was a HUGE fan of the Big Boy and trains in general. He took me several times to the railroad museum in Green Bay, WI that had one on static display and we went to see one together when it came to Milwaukee. I've also taken pictures of a Big Boy, I think the same one we saw in Milwaukee, in both Cheyenne, WY and North Platte, NE. Man, he would have loved this.
Respect for you and I get it. My father started my love for these machines when I was a boy. I know your father is probably beaming down at you while this beast is gloriously getting back into service.
I saw this wonderwhen it was a static exhibit at Pomona CA. This was during my third railfan trip to the USA (from home in UK). Two more USA trips followed, but 4014 was not yet running during my last trip in 2012. I am now 80 years old. Not sure I shall ever return to see 4014 in steam. (Sigh)
She may be obsolete She may be outdated A relic of the past But there is one thing even the naysayers and haters can admit. A steam engine will always look good in motion. Crawling out of a station or hightailing it down the rails.
Back when I was young I did a lot of pacing and realize how difficult it can be. A steam trip even then was VERY hard. This is extremely good footage and I would like to offer my congratulations to the photographer and the driver. I saw a couple of moves the driver made to keep in place. Not easy, not legal, but ya do what ya gotta do.
Magnificent. A M A Z I N G footage. Wonderfully analog. Not a stinking computer chip in the whole thing. Just good old fashioned brute force and American engineering.
@@sithlordofoz there is no DPU in this train. The diesel locomotive you see is controlled by an Engineer sitting in it. But it’s in idle the majority of the time. It’s there primarily to provide Dynamic braking on long descending grades. It also has all the Positive Train Control (PTC) equipment that it feeds data to the in-cab displays on the 4014. And lastly it serves as a rescue engine should the 4014 develop any issues.
Fabrice Specque 😉🇫🇷
Back in the mid fifties when I was a little boy in love with steam engines and trains, somewhere in Southern Utah, the highway paralleled the tracks for hours and there was a double-headed train of Big Boys pulling a miles long string of cars. My dad knew how much I love steam engines so he paced the train for miles and miles. I am reminded of that as I watch.
Я на своем 2-10-0 движущийся механизм отполировал, а вы ограничились покраской, имитировав полировку. Может он так поржавел, что нельзя отполировать. Величественный локомотив, на все времена!!! Спасибо!
Absolutely brilliant great filming & the star of the show 4014 big boy & all at Union pacific who maintain & do all the hard work to keep this great locomotives running.
You must stand next to 4014 to appreciate just how enormous and powerful it really is, in person. No amount of adjectives are hyperbole when describing the Big Boy! It is so gratifying to see it running again, as it was meant to.
I'm really glad I came to RUclips before going to bed like I should have. Haha, this has to be the #1 BEST video I have seen of #4014 or of any other steam locomotive I have ever seen. Aboustly fantastic!!!! It is mesmerizing. It's also wild how it basically gets dead silent once it gets to speed.
What a beautiful take. The hero of them all. Thanks to every person, for there dedication, year after year, day after day, to save, what is more than history.!!
Lucky are those who live trackside and have something like this going through their backyard. The design, engineering and construction of his locomotive is beyond comprehension and all done without robots or computers and made in the USA.
Thank you so much for getting this footage, it is wonderful. I was hoping 2023 would be the year 4014 would make it's long awaited/anticipated/planned trip to the northern Nevada area, but it isn't to be. It is a functional piece of American History brought back to life by people who love it, and cherish it. I still hope to see it running up the Sierras to Truckee some day.
I saw this BB when it was taken from the Pomona fairgrounds in ca and spent a week on display at the San Bernardino train yard before going to Cheyenne to be restored. It’s massive
It says something about the Big Boy when even non-railfans are given pause and drop everything to get a picture of it. What an absolutely magnificent machine.
I was lucky enough to be standing by the tracks when 4014 stopped in Illinois to take on water and get some photos. It looks big in videos but it can't do justice to just how massive this locomotive is in person. Miracle from the age when men built giants.
Nothing, and I mean NOTHING comes close to the combination of such elegance and raw power as the Big Boy with all the theatrics of sound and steam! A heartfelt thank-you to Union Pacific, Ed Dickens, the crew, all the way down to the guys with the torches and grinders that sweated the butts off to make this dark rail Titan live again! You guys are real history makers and living legends. 🇺🇸🗽

It has a helper loco for the long stretched areas of no water
As long as the rails run as straight as possible. Bigboys don't like curves very much. U.P. ran these locomotives on long straight runs in the American West.
The Big Boys and Challengers were designed to take 20 degree curves. That's pretty tight.
Ваша правда😊
Beautiful train beautiful horns flatout beautiful moving good
Pretty special. I never thought I'd see a Big Boy running. Grateful to UP and all the expert volunteers!
There's a video on the internet, that Shows 4014 Going 70 MHR. The engineer have the engine running SO GOOD There's NO BLACK SMOKE.
I think that's because the boiler is now oil fired rather than coal fired.@@andynieuwenhuis7833

HAD BROTHERS WHO WERE RAILROADERS....I LOVE THIS ENGINE.
Respect to the engineers who designed this without using a CAD program😂
Big time respect!
They designed a lot of things.
It's both a marble of engineering and a work of art to be honest
That’s Schenectady engineering for ya.

That whistle is spine chilling. Brings a few tears to my eyes.
Bravo to Union Pacific for bringing this BEAUTY back to life. Doing this can't be cheap. Bravo to the great chase video. Wow! What a machine!

If it was on the rails it was this one. 4014 is the only one fully functional

A superb chase video, one of the best actually!
From a "Big-Boy" lover here in the UK. 😊 🇬🇧
And you get the small but fast boys which would also be awesome to see. A steamer going 100 right by you

Excellent! Out of the 1 trillion videos on the internet, this is my new favorite.
Fantastic job shooting this video!! Thankyou. It's amazing to watch 4014 directly from the side, unobstructed, at speed.
I am so in love with Big Boy 4014. I get mesmerized watching her. Many more of these videos would be wonderful. Thank you.
Me too
Never been a train fan really but I love this , absolutely fantastic.
This doesn't get anymore Cooooler and amazing😊
Wow! Ein richtig großer Junge❤
Thanks, I appreciate the effort made by all those who make this precious piece of American history remain for us to admire
Great video. Really great how you were able to keep pace with the train. So impressive. 👏👏👏🙋♂️🇬🇧
WOW !!!! Dang !! I'd like to see that huge thing in person !
I am always just so in awe of this gorgeous machine!! ❤❤❤ LOVE this video!! ❤️❤️❤️😊😊😊
Spectacular machine - amazing to watch it get going so quickly
One of the best train run videos ever! Perfect pacing of the engine throughout.
Very nice footage, love it that you included the train getting started....

Awesome video! I never noticed how quietly 4014 can run once it gets up to speed.
It is NOT quiet when you are next to it. When we are driving along side it gets quite loud and the whistle is extremely loud.
@@NYCTARailfan, still nothing sort of loud compared to a disel locomotive.
...Can't stop watching it... It's MAJESTIC!...
I have no words that adequately express my view on Big Boy. Big Boy is just bloody AWESOME.
Best vid yet for this trip! Great job.
Gorgeous beast of engineering. I've only seen her in person once and hope to see her again.
