Join us as we pace UP No. 4014 out of Gering, NE on its way towards North Platte and Omaha on the Home Run Express. Watch and listen as Big Boy accelerates its ~1,132 ton train up to about 40 mph on the South Morrill Sub, over territory that has never seen a 4000-class locomotive until today. Enjoy and stay tuned for the full compilation =)
Huge thanks to / @nyctarailfan for being my pace driver.
FAQ (Read before commenting):
The diesel locomotive accompanies UP Steam power to provide a measure of security and flexibility in operations. The diesel can hold or slow the train speed down using dynamic braking, thus saving the cost of new brake shoes and the time needed to install them. Additionally, the diesel can be used to assist when necessary, and to extend the fuel and water supply, allowing for longer operating distances and days. Finally, as of 2021, the diesel is an integral part of the PTC system required for FRA compliance.
The water overflow from just in front of the rear cylinder on the fireman's side is the exhaust steam injector overflow port. Discharge from this port is normal when starting and stopping the injector, and when the injector switches between live steam and exhaust steam.

If you don't believe people still love steam engines, just look at all the cars pulled over and people with their phones, taking pics. This is prime farming season, and even the tractors paused in their work to watch! Great video. Thank you for posting it.
Spectacular footage. Even after three years of it in operation, I am still in awe of the fact that 1) a Big Boy is running in the 21st Century and 2) that men of this country actually constructed something this powerful and efficient. If anything, 4014's runs in the flatter areas have shown just how utilitarian its hauling capabilities truly are, this thing can literally highball in addition to conquering grades. Perfect engineering.
It has a helper loco for the long stretched areas of no water
As long as the rails run as straight as possible. Bigboys don't like curves very much. U.P. ran these locomotives on long straight runs in the American West.
The Big Boys and Challengers were designed to take 20 degree curves. That's pretty tight.
Ваша правда😊
Beautiful train beautiful horns flatout beautiful moving good
Pretty special. I never thought I'd see a Big Boy running. Grateful to UP and all the expert volunteers!
There's a video on the internet, that Shows 4014 Going 70 MHR. The engineer have the engine running SO GOOD There's NO BLACK SMOKE.
I think that's because the boiler is now oil fired rather than coal fired.@@andynieuwenhuis7833
Respect to the engineers who designed this without using a CAD program😂
Big time respect!
They designed a lot of things.
It's both a marble of engineering and a work of art to be honest
That’s Schenectady engineering for ya.
@@Electrodexifyquite marbellous isn’t it
It's so nice to see a piece of engineering art draw such a diverse awed audience - women, children, sr's, etc. It really is quite a piece! A crowd pleaser.
A superb chase video, one of the best actually!
From a "Big-Boy" lover here in the UK. 😊 🇬🇧
And you get the small but fast boys which would also be awesome to see. A steamer going 100 right by you
I love this magnificent piece of beauty, engineering and grace in motion!!
Years ago I was fortunate to see,and touch this great locomotive, what a privilege.
Just watching this brings tear to my eyes!
A living breathing machine!
The first person I thought of to share this video with is my dad. He just passed away two months ago. He would have had a huge smile on his face watching this. He was a HUGE fan of the Big Boy and trains in general. He took me several times to the railroad museum in Green Bay, WI that had one on static display and we went to see one together when it came to Milwaukee. I've also taken pictures of a Big Boy, I think the same one we saw in Milwaukee, in both Cheyenne, WY and North Platte, NE. Man, he would have loved this.
Respect for you and I get it. My father started my love for these machines when I was a boy. I know your father is probably beaming down at you while this beast is gloriously getting back into service.
If it was on the rails it was this one. 4014 is the only one fully functional
I saw this wonderwhen it was a static exhibit at Pomona CA. This was during my third railfan trip to the USA (from home in UK). Two more USA trips followed, but 4014 was not yet running during my last trip in 2012. I am now 80 years old. Not sure I shall ever return to see 4014 in steam. (Sigh)
I hear you brother, my Dad was a fan too of the Big Boy, I miss my Dad. He would have loved this video
Back when I was young I did a lot of pacing and realize how difficult it can be. A steam trip even then was VERY hard. This is extremely good footage and I would like to offer my congratulations to the photographer and the driver. I saw a couple of moves the driver made to keep in place. Not easy, not legal, but ya do what ya gotta do.
Excellent! Out of the 1 trillion videos on the internet, this is my new favorite.
Fantastic job shooting this video!! Thankyou. It's amazing to watch 4014 directly from the side, unobstructed, at speed.
Kudos to the fireman. At 5:16, cruising along at 40mph and NO SMOKE!!!! He is very good.
DPU doing most of the work!
lmao the diesel is either idling or in dynamic brake.
@@sithlordofoz Words can't describe how wrong you are lol
@@sithlordofoz there is no DPU in this train. The diesel locomotive you see is controlled by an Engineer sitting in it. But it’s in idle the majority of the time. It’s there primarily to provide Dynamic braking on long descending grades. It also has all the Positive Train Control (PTC) equipment that it feeds data to the in-cab displays on the 4014. And lastly it serves as a rescue engine should the 4014 develop any issues.
think they watered down the bunker oil with diesel fuel
She may be obsolete
She may be outdated
A relic of the past
But there is one thing even the naysayers and haters can admit.
A steam engine will always look good in motion. Crawling out of a station or hightailing it down the rails.
4-8-8-4 what a monster. I rode steam trains through the mountains of South America in the 50-60s. They were a third that size, narrow gauge and tended to tip over. The windows were always open, so you got to your destination covered in ash. They were eventually replaced by the autoferro, a single car with a diesel engine in the middle of the passenger area.
This doesn't get anymore Cooooler and amazing😊
Bravo to Union Pacific for bringing this BEAUTY back to life. Doing this can't be cheap. Bravo to the great chase video. Wow! What a machine!
😅😊
Great video. Really great how you were able to keep pace with the train. So impressive. 👏👏👏🙋♂️🇬🇧
I am so in love with Big Boy 4014. I get mesmerized watching her. Many more of these videos would be wonderful. Thank you.
Such a beautiful beast!
Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱.
One of the best train run videos ever! Perfect pacing of the engine throughout.
Thanks, I appreciate the effort made by all those who make this precious piece of American history remain for us to admire
Magnificent. A M A Z I N G footage. Wonderfully analog. Not a stinking computer chip in the whole thing. Just good old fashioned brute force and American engineering.
Awesome video! I never noticed how quietly 4014 can run once it gets up to speed.
It is NOT quiet when you are next to it. When we are driving along side it gets quite loud and the whistle is extremely loud.
@@NYCTARailfan, still nothing sort of loud compared to a disel locomotive.
I am always just so in awe of this gorgeous machine!! ❤❤❤ LOVE this video!! ❤️❤️❤️😊😊😊
Very nice footage, love it that you included the train getting started....
Spectacular machine - amazing to watch it get going so quickly
Respect to the men that built this!!
You must stand next to 4014 to appreciate just how enormous and powerful it really is, in person. No amount of adjectives are hyperbole when describing the Big Boy! It is so gratifying to see it running again, as it was meant to.
I second that.
Nice some pacing action🚂🚋🚃🚃🚃🚃
What a magnificent piece of engineering!
Absolutely brilliant great filming & the star of the show 4014 big boy & all at Union pacific who maintain & do all the hard work to keep this great locomotives running.
Einfach ein Traum 😃Da geht mir das Herz auf 😮Sensationell 🙋♂️
Thank you so much for getting this footage, it is wonderful. I was hoping 2023 would be the year 4014 would make it's long awaited/anticipated/planned trip to the northern Nevada area, but it isn't to be. It is a functional piece of American History brought back to life by people who love it, and cherish it.
I still hope to see it running up the Sierras to Truckee some day.
Having been to Truckee, I'd love to see that, myself!
Great job attending the firebox at that speed!
Lucky are those who live trackside and have something like this going through their backyard. The design, engineering and construction of his locomotive is beyond comprehension and all done without robots or computers and made in the USA.
Fabrice Specque 😉🇫🇷
I'm really glad I came to RUclips before going to bed like I should have. Haha, this has to be the #1 BEST video I have seen of #4014 or of any other steam locomotive I have ever seen. Aboustly fantastic!!!! It is mesmerizing. It's also wild how it basically gets dead silent once it gets to speed.
Back in the mid fifties when I was a little boy in love with steam engines and trains, somewhere in Southern Utah, the highway paralleled the tracks for hours and there was a double-headed train of Big Boys pulling a miles long string of cars. My dad knew how much I love steam engines so he paced the train for miles and miles. I am reminded of that as I watch.
Cheers from the Pacific West Coast of Canada.
Nice 👍😊❤ Fabolous 🍓🍎👄❤️💜💕 capture with sweet 🧁🎂 timing in order to salute the champion of 🚂🚂 locomotive big boy 4014superb video 📷
Nothing, and I mean NOTHING comes close to the combination of such elegance and raw power as the Big Boy with all the theatrics of sound and steam!
A heartfelt thank-you to Union Pacific, Ed Dickens, the crew, all the way down to the guys with the torches and grinders that sweated the butts off to make this dark rail Titan live again! You guys are real history makers and living legends. 🇺🇸🗽
Nice seeing Big Boy at speed opener up!!
Pure beauty of "Poetry In Motion" from engineering of the last century
God bless grandpa who designed steam engines for a career
Those boys will never die yea!!!
Я на своем 2-10-0 движущийся механизм отполировал, а вы ограничились покраской, имитировав полировку. Может он так поржавел, что нельзя отполировать. Величественный локомотив, на все времена!!! Спасибо!
This video is absolutely amazing. Not only is this an awesome train, but you guys did an amazing job following it.
Best vid yet for this trip! Great job.
Saw this engine in motion several years ago. It's amazing how quiet it is (aside from the whistle).
To sit down with pen and paper and this is the end product unbelievable 🇬🇧👌
Good pacing!
Thanks!
Incredible video. Thanks.
Gorgeous beast of engineering. I've only seen her in person once and hope to see her again.
That is a beautiful machine. From🇨🇦👍
I’m glad to see them keeping this literal history alive, it’s a sound and sight unlike any other
Thank you UP for keeping this piece of history running.
Keep making these videos and let us know where the Big Boy is going next, St Louis maybe??? :):) We'll keep watching!
Wow! Ein richtig großer Junge❤
Cool pacing!
Amazing camera work going on here! Thank You for posting this!
Man made miracles. Totally awesome. Nice video. 😊
i do not know why, but watching this brought a tear to my eyes.
Very good! I think this is the best train pacing videos I’ve seen
I was lucky enough to be standing by the tracks when 4014 stopped in Illinois to take on water and get some photos. It looks big in videos but it can't do justice to just how massive this locomotive is in person. Miracle from the age when men built giants.
I have no words that adequately express my view on Big Boy. Big Boy is just bloody AWESOME.
Pretty awesome machine Bless the builders- designers .🤗🤗🤗
Videos like this is why I cancelled cable tv and tv in general, look what we all can witness here, thanks to the person who made this incredible footage possible,....amazing. Me
Spectacular video . Watching the hogger notch out the big steamer was way too cool. Stack talk was something else!
EPIC AUDIO as always!
Pure American muscle. Its crazy to think how powerful big boys are, they were hauling freight on their own at the same length todays trains are.
I saw this BB when it was taken from the Pomona fairgrounds in ca and spent a week on display at the San Bernardino train yard before going to Cheyenne to be restored. It’s massive
The one time it doesn't suck to have a house next to the tracks! 😁😁😁
God Bless UP for rebuilding it. Complete and total absolute respect!!
Amazing video, well done.
man the power !!! fantastic video !!
WOW !!!! Dang !! I'd like to see that huge thing in person !
Was für eine Super Lock
Wonderfull!👍
Great pacing video. Watch this to the end and you will know why I love this Big Boy 4014.
Oil fired ?
yes
I love the big boy train whistle it makes excited
What a beautiful take. The hero of them all. Thanks to every person, for there dedication, year after year, day after day, to save, what is more than history.!!
Now that’s a Footage! Thank You. What a Locomotive ❤
The camerawork is so good I thought this was a computer simulation or something. 🤣
FANTASTIC VIDEO!! Thank you for sharing!
what a beauty ;)
such a great video, thank you!
Absolutely Stunning ❤
So powerfull and so quiet compare to today's diesel engine train. Love it, nice video
Awesome stuff. We love our trains here in Clemson SC.
she really is a Beautiful Beast !!! I'm 6'4" and couldn't believe the main drivers were taller than me :)
4014's drivers are actually only 5'8". You must be thinking of 844's 6'8" drivers.
@@FanRailer Really??? I have a pic of me standing next to it when they parked it in Omaha last year after going through Iowa. All I can think is I was standing on the roadbed next to it so the ties and rail might have givin me that illusion. IDK I've been wrong before :) She's still a magnificent beast :)
Ahh that'll do it. The top of the railhead is usually at least a foot higher than the base of the ballast.
I have to go and see this in person! As a child we saw changeover from steam to diesel but this is a big boy locomotive and really a spectacular monster.
AWESOME footage. She is alive and very well, 4014 lives on. thanks for sharing this most excellent video.
I could sit and watch this all day.
This isn't just a magnifient locomotive. It's a time machine.
Very awesome video! and view!💖💖🤗🤗🤝🤝
Extremely satisfying video, what a machine!
Thank you for this video 😮🙏🙏🙏
What a Hell of a video.Bucket list.
salute to the Honorable engineers
Looks very smooth at speed.
