  • Passing your driving test is an amazing feeling. what to do when you pass your driving test can be a daunting prospect. P plates are often used to give you more confidence when you've just passed your driving test but are they a good idea? Laura Thornton and Francis Noakes take a look at what to do that could make you a confident driver driving alone.

The fact that L and P plates have this effect on how learners/new drivers are treated says quite a lot about people.

I passed my test in June this year. I did use P Plates and it was an awful experience . Cars overtook me and no cars would let me in . So I took them off within 2 weeks . I am treated so differently now . My confidence is good now . My first drive was so scary alone. My heart was beating too fast but I kept telling myself I am good enough as I passed first time . After that no problem at all x

My first solo drive was horrible. I tried to drive to work. I didn't have any pressure of being there on time, but I wasn't prepared for the amount of traffic, or the nerves that I had. I ended up rolling into the car behind me on a hill.
The most important lesson I took from that was not to be so nervous. My nerves made me such a bad driver that day. I keep reminding myself now that they wouldn't have passed my test if I'm a bad driver 😊 and 3 months later I love driving!

For my first solo drive, I stuck to local roads I know inside out and I commentated my entire drive out loud, for example slowing down as lights have been green for a while, check inside mirror, check right mirror, indicate right, looking over shoulder to get in lane, wait at the give way line etc. it really helped rather be left in silence with my thoughts which made me nervous. also I got my car in summer, so I took it out at 5am when it was daylight with no traffic, then next day at 7am. then 9am, then 12pm etc to gently introduce myself to traffic flow at different times of day. Hope this helps

My experience with L plates, is that if you are in towns/villages/rural areas people are VERY forgiving, thank you for letting them out and let you in, also give you space on the whole. In citys larger towns or any busy junctions people get very frustrated almost immediately as if they are waiting for proof of a mistake, overtake or drive dangerously to get past the 'assumed bad driver'. I had this issue in the car with my instructor, with my relatives helping me get experience and on my own driving home from the test center since I didn't take the plates off to go home. I assumed since I was only one person in the car people would know I was not on a lesson but I was ttreated the exact same. I had multiple people try to overtake on the outside lanes of roundabouts to take the first exit and nearly crash into me when they tried to turn into my lane expecting me not to be pulling out as soon as there was space. It was terrifying.

I would recommend purchasing a vehicle a few months prior to passing. For me, I purchased mine a little over a year before I passed. But having that experience with friends and family in a car, gave me time to build up confidence in my own car. Then when I first went out on my own, I was confident using my car on the road. I’ve not long passed, having passed a little over two weeks back but the experience beforehand has made a huge difference in my ability to overcome problems and hurdles which might have otherwise been difficult. Good luck to all of my fellow drivers and wish you all the best on the roads and in life!❤️✌️

I went out with a very experienced driver who I completely trusted. So helpful. I then went out in my own the next day and got lost but managed to sort it and did a practice drive to my work place and the supermarket (not close to here cos it's rural) and was brave and went on the local dual carriageway. I also did all the routes to and from work as well over a few weeks. Mistakes will be made, but the best thing to do is learn from them, and you truly start learning after you passed. Didn't use p plates because of how people treated me as a learner.

My first solo journey was from my mums house to a Halfords. I was picking up some P plates, ironically. 😂 It was about 15 minutes in the car maximum, I took a break after that for about an hour before I drove to my home and parked up. I recommend not driving people for a little bit until you're feeling more confident. I drove my sister on my second day with my car and I hated every single minute of it. I should have had more time in the car alone before taking someone else. I did take my dad out, however, on day 3! But that was to help me learn more in that car, he talked me through things that helped me learn to drive THAT car as it was older than the cars my instructor had. That was useful, taking my sister just stressed me out.
And with P plates: I got honked at a bit and overtaken a few times which never happened when I was a learner but I was also given room on the road. I was forgiven more for stalls (which happened a LOT) and most of the time, given the time I needed. I took the P plates off after 2 months, I didn't really know when to take them off and actually did it just because I was tired of people at work knowing I was in because they could see the P plate 😂 But since I took it off, I don't get honked at BUT I do get tailgated a LOT. I drive a lot at night due to working late and at first, tailgating freaked me out and I knew that could cause me to make stupid mistakes. Once it did - I drove 10mph above the speed limit and the person was still right behind me. I then knew after that I couldn't let that happen again and so I pull off to the side of the road or into a carpark to let the drivers behind me go. I'll stay at the speed limit and they can make their own mistakes. The advice for P plates I'd give is that there is no right or wrong way. They're a personal choice and I liked having them as it gave me time to learn my car and the roads before I took them off. Other drivers are either really kind or really not. It's not really easy to know until you're on the road. Try them out, if they make you feel less confident or drivers do treat you worse, take them off. If it's the opposite, keep them on for as long as you want!

This videos gonna help a lot of people 👍. I recently passed my test late August (the same day I went to wales for 4 days) and I bought my car as soon as I got home. I installed 'P' plates on my car for my second day of independant driving but only because the car I bought wasn't at all like I was used too. My car is petrol and my instructors was diesel so I had to balance the clutch and gas a lot more PLUS the clutch on my car needed replacing ASAP (according to my dad - a mechanic) but I drove in it for about 1 week before replacing it, but because it needed replacing I was stalling a lot, and it didn't make me confident in my driving AT ALL, even though I was before. So thats why I used the 'P' plates, and I did notice alot of other road users being annoyed with me and attempting overtakes they shouldn't have. But the P plates do give you a better sense of security, even if only A FEW good road users give you the extra space - it helps. As soon as I replaced the clutch in my car, and had a couple hours of practise on some local streets - getting used to the car and new clutch, I took off the P plates and have had them off ever since. THE WORST situation I encountered whilst having P plates on, was when reversing out of a parking space onto the road behind me (it was a car boot sale, on private land) and I reversed out (it was clear at the time) and a Van driver coming hurtling down the dirt road and just didn't stop AT ALL he tried to fit himself into a tiny gap between my car and the car boot stand but couldn't so had to slow, and he blasted his horn at me. Even though i was already in the middle of the path, like what am I supposed to do 🤷‍♂😂. I'm so glad I took my dads advice when I passed my test, he told me never to worry about the cars behind - if they beep or anything - because if you feel rushed you're more likely to make mistakes.

It was about a week or two before I went out solo 2 years ago for the first time. I found taking a short trip around the block was the best thing. You feel so vulnerable and that everyone is watching and you go past a police car and you feel they will stop you for something but no none of that happens. I found little set tasks like going to the shop and parking up very good. Also playing a song on loop like an instrumental piece. My first piece of music was Silent Life - Fluff. It takes a while and I nearly had a few near misses and getting beeped on roundabouts etc on my first couple weeks after that. I was always thinking I should not be making these dangerous mistakes. I was prepared to go back into the test centre and hand in my licence and say you made a mistake but my parents assured me it was just nerves. After a while you build up confidence. You build observation skills and you are more aware of things happening and what others will do the more you drive. My other advice would be not to forget what you are taught. Making good plans when driving is probably more about what is happening behind you, remember your mirrors and keep good distance. My other advice is do the pass plus, do a skid training course, do the DIAmond advanced motorists test and join the local RoSPA club and learn roadcraft driving. I have done all of those things, the DIAmond is a good intro to advanced driving and passed that 1 year after my L test very useful. Skid training is also very handy. The Rospa is my latest challenge and still in training. It is a whole new way to drive but it will be worth it.

Fully agreed on your comments about both Pass Plus and not using P plates. I did the Pass Plus after passing (around the time of Noah's Ark) and it does give you a lot of valuable experience. In addition, it can give you the equivalent of a one year no-claims bonus on your insurance and I still use that to my advantage today - all these years on.
I would highly recommend a few hours worth of lessons on the motorway, so they aren't so bad when you do go solo.
Once you have some experience behind the wheel, why not go for advanced lessons with an organisation like RoSPA and take your advanced test. I did mine with RoSPA and the lessons were free in my own car, with my local group, and it's roughly about £50 for the test. They're fun to do and you learn so much more about driving and driving safely. I passed with a Gold. Next bonus is that some insurance companies will also give you a discount if you have an advanced pass under your belt.
I would leave the P Plates alone though. My instructor advised me not to use them, and now as an experienced driver, I often see how aggressive some people can be to those with them displayed, as they can be with L Plates.

I personally think having green P plates is the exact effect as having Red L plates, makes absolutely no difference at all. Just as was perfectly described in this video, other road users can be idiots sometimes, the best thing any new driver can do is, do NOT let other drivers pressure you, but be condifent in yourself, in your driving abilities, you've passed the driving test, always remember all you've learnt from your lessons, because theres nothing worse than getting 6 points on your new driving license that you've worked so hard to get, for simply driving recklessly.
For young drivers, who want to impress their mates, girlfriends etc, don't do it, its NOT worth getting 6 points on your newly gained driving license, because i have seen so many young drivers do just weeks after gaining their new driving license only to have 6+ points on their new license.
Very good advice from this video. When i get my license & car, i will attempt to drive around my block until i feel confident enough to drive even further out, & i'll slowly increase the distance as i gain more confidence.

I passed my test in 1988 so that's , eeeeh , 34 years driving. I noticed people started peeping there horns and flashing there lights and once got shouted at. This went on for a week and I was wondering what the hell was going on. Then it clicked , my wife left the P plate on the back of the car. I took it off and everything went back to normal.

Thank you for sharing this. I passed in April, but o ly just got my car. I've been doing pass plus to breidge the gap since then. I was reluctant to have P plates as my instructor advised against it, have witnessed firsthand how inpatient other riad users can be to learner drivers, and also, I feel like I've earned my place on the road. I didn't even know that these existed, and the idea of 'new driver' sits better in my mindset than P plates, so I've just ordered some on Amazon. Thank you

I honestly think that the question of whether to use P plates comes down to where you live. Sounds weird, but i think certain neighbourhoods and rural areas are more likely to be kinder and more forgiving, while busy cities are less likely. I just passed my test yesterday so i haven't used mine yet, but i think i'm just going to put them on for now, and if i start having terrible experiences, i'll take them off. The once my mum bought me are just magnetic so they're easy to get on and off anyway. If i do use them i don't think it will be for long anyway.

Im not going to use p plates but i may get them in case i change my mind and feel like i need that safety net.

The theory I have - and other comments seem to back this up, your experience with P plates will depend massively on the area in which you live. In smaller villages/towns/cities, where drivers are a bit older and less aggressive, P plates are almost certainly a great thing to have.
In the city, my experience was that some drivers were more aggressive, would pip behind me at junctions, cut me up and tailgate. I ended up feeling really nervous and drove worse for it, so I took them off. Good drivers leave people with P plates more space, but good drivers were never really the issue.
Ironically, we are in a situation where the most challenging places to drive (busy cities), where you really need that extra space that P plates should provide, they are actively harmful. Then the areas that are generally easier to drive, P plates are quite useful.

i passed my test last year and have used P plates the hole time. its a load of crap people are more aggressive.... its the total opposite. when you are waiting people let you pass much more often. at junctions people give you priority because they can see the P. people keep there distance. i get away with alot more and save so much time having P plates on my car its and advantage. Maybe it depends on where you live i live in Yorkshire and P plates help. my mum noticed how often people let me out when i drive her. it has probably been years since most instructors have used p plates. try them out for yourself.

I just got rid of my L plates so why would I want to broadcast to everyone that I'm not that experienced? 😅 No plates is the best approach, blend in with everyone else and you'll be less likely to be treated differently, obviously there are still going to be those idiots now and then but just saves yourself being a target.

It may be just my ingrained cynicism, but I tend to think that the P on P plates stands for "Please bully this inexperienced driver". If I do something stupid on the road I'd rather look like an idiot than a target. (Not that I do stupid things on the road. Well, I've done a few things since driving solo in my own car that would have failed my test if there'd been an examiner next to me, but nothing that would lose me my licence if I'd caught the attention of the police!)
I bought my own car a couple of weeks after passing my test. I was expecting the dealer to sit in during the test drive and basically act like a driving instructor, but instead it was "OK, up the road, left at the roundabout and turn round when you're ready." So I got my first solo drive a bit earlier than I expected, but there was no backing out, I had to go for it. A bit of panic when I want to come back, I've got nowhere to turn round and there's an Audi behind me, but eventually I found a roundabout that I could go round. I'm still a little bit nervous about going out for a drive, but once I'm in the car I'm pretty much fine. Was just about getting the hang of the clutch, I took her in for a service and the damn' mechanic goes and adjusts it. I stalled at every light coming home!
