Driving on my own was weird at first but I was fine. I think I was doing this well because I was mature enough. I'm not sure if I was dealing with it properly, if I was younger and less mature. I hear the youngens moan about their insurances being higher just because they're young but the statistics speak for themselves.

No it's not, why are they called learner drivers, and why's it called "learning to drive" if it's not true?
Why would they pass people who hadn't learnt to drive?

Just to add: mistakes are certain to happen. I passed last month and there have been a few situations where I’ve tried to pull away in second, selected the wrong lane when not focusing and made a poor judgement on when to go.
Embarrassingly for me, I tried to pull away on a roundabout and kept stalling. The cars behind me were blaring their horns and the panic settled in. Turns out, I was trying to pull away with my right foot on the brake!! So don’t feel bad if you make a mistake and definitely don’t dwell on it - they happen so that they don’t happen twice and you are 100% not alone.
    Thanks for the vid Richard!

Most important thing is to be safe. I just passed my test after I had to stop in the middle of the roundabout because a car with no indicators came flying in from the right, but it was the best thing I could have done in the situation, and the examiner appreciated it.

    • @michaelthomas3646

mistakes will always happen it is part of being human regardless of how well, and safe you think you are, just remember these mistakes and be prepared for others to make mistakes everyone has been there at some point in their driving lives. this is from someone that has been driving 30 years.
just remember do not leave the scene of an accident even to turn your car around, only take pictures and any video footage you got from a dashcam, and also you got to declare any footage, and share any footage with anyone who asks for it in an accident either by e-mail or something private.
had a brand new driver who pulled out of a side junction on my left a few months ago, panic set in, he left the scene, but by the time I was ready to speak to him he had returned.
not everyone would be as understanding, and would call the police if you leave an accident scene rather than parking up properly. but given him the benefit of doubt to allow the house owner access to their driveway, and the fact it was a very tight side road for a brand new driver to manage to reverse down, and with panic would have done even more damage to cars parked along it trying to reverse along it.
he paniced that he would also loose his licence, but I have been in a simular situation as a brand new driver being in my first year of driving. so I know what it feels like, and said the best thing was for him to get his car repaired, and experience is how you learn stuff. so he got off lightly compared to any other driver out there that would claim whiplash or something to get the police out and cause more problems for a brand new driver.
I had done stuff to try minimise any injuries and possible car damage which was a write-off by my insurance, but neither of us were injured enough to need medical attention.

Tip: try putting your bag or coat on the passenger seat! The first time I drove alone, the feeling of 'empty car' freaked me out a bit - no instructor, no family, just silent empty seats!! So for my first few journeys after that, I put my backpack in the passenger seat. It's a small, random thing, but not having an empty seat next to me genuinely helped me feel more relaxed about driving alone, just for those first few journeys. Do what works for you and don't be too hard on yourself -- you'll feel totally at home on the roads sooner than you expect! :)

Didn't drive for 10(!) years after passing. Suddenly I needed the car for work. Refreshing my knowledge and getting familiar with driving on the road again took about 2 months of practicing almost every day. Your videos helped tremendously, especially the mock driving tests. Seeing other nervous drivers encouraged me to push through. I eventually did a mock exam with a driving instructor and got told I was a good, safe driver! Thanks, Richard. The videos you put out really helped and made me a better, safer, more confident driver.

I passed my test then didn't actually drive for six years. Almost straight after I passed my dad died, and for two years I wasn't mentally stable enough to drive. And then I didn't want to drive as I didn't have a car and wasn't particularly keen on buying a car. I eventually had to four years after that when my mum got ill and needed driving around. I had a neighbour who took me out a few times for lessons, but I watched a lot - A LOT - of your videos and they have been unbelievably helpful. It has taken me over a year to get the hang of driving and I no longer poop myself every time I get to a junction.

I was talking to myself about what I needed to do , and after I built confidence a little, I went for a country drive . It's true you really start learning to drive after you pass your test the road is full of idiots

They key things for me were:
if you find yourself in a tricky situation where you don't know what to do, take things slow and remember what your instructor told you.
don't let other road users or passengers rush you, go at a speed you feel comfortable
go to an empty carpark on a Sunday evening and practice your reversing, trust me, it will be very useful.
don't beat yourself up for mistakes, it happens to everybody and it shouldn't put you off driving.
don't completely rely on google maps and waze, use signs and road markings too.

A great video. Been driving 18 months. After passing my test, my instructor told me to go for a drive on my own without any passengers. I got too nervous and didn’t drive for a week. To overcome it, I went halfway to work with my partner following behind and in the evening when I knew it was quieter. I knew the route. After doing that a few times I then did it on my own (an hours journey). Then a month later my usual route was closed and panicked as I didn’t know where I was going. Turned out I didn’t need to panic, you have the skills.
If it’s an area I’m diving in that I don’t know, I go a little under the speed limit to give me a bit more time.
Only done the motorway a couple of times and got nervous before setting off. Not long after joining the motorway I settled into it. Have had lots of practice on country roads.
My partner had to show me how to fill the car up with petrol as I didn’t know how and it wasn’t taught in my lessons 😂
After passing I didn’t want to drive on my own and now I don’t want passengers 😂
Certainly picked up a few skills since passing, especially anticipating what other drivers and pedestrians are going to do.

It is so good giving out these advice. When I passed just shortly before covid and had noone to practise with, was completely freaked out, made mistakes,,drove into a one way street opposite direction, city drive with no idea where to go, noone to recommend a suitable car to buy,,or anything. But I researched and choose a great car reliable, low cost. I also felt pressurised to go and drive a lot, on motorways,in the city but I resisted pressure and I decided to do weekends drives, basic small drives and building up distances, unfamiliar places and it is still hard and make mistakes at times but I always review and learn from it.
    Great tips as always! Thanks

Finally passed my driving test today on my 2nd attempt. Failed my first test due to nerves which caused silly mistakes. Just want to say how helpful your videos were in teaching not just what methods should be followed to drive safely, but also informing learners of why those methods should be used. You have an amazing approach to your teaching and have helped many learners probably without even knowing. Keep doing what you are doing Richard, you have an incredible approach to teaching! Thank you! :)

Thanks to you I passed my test today with 4 minors. I’ve been driving for a while though, but my IDP was expiring soon, so I had to go through the process to get a UK licence. Thank you!!!

    Hi Richard,
I've passed me test back in November but couldn't get a car untill now....
Just drove home from about 40 miles away starting from 30+ ° hills and the dreaded motorway too....
I stalled once and put the car into 1st instead of 3rd twice as well...
    It was a scary experience.
I did take a few breaks, found that having no music to distract but thinking out loud reminding me of what i needed to do helped a lot as well. Needless to say, my confidence took a knock
I'm going binge a lot of your videos to get tips to build some good habits back into driving.
Huge thanks for all your content!
There are a few good channels out there (obviously UK ones for UK drivers work best) but i find you are able to describe things easiest to digest.
Keep up the good work mate, you're making the world a better place! 😁

In N.Ireland you must display "R plates" for the first year after passing your test. These plates restrict you to 45mph on a motorway.

I passed my test and didnt drive for like 7 months after passing due to having no car, but the videos deffo helped maintian knowledge and the moment i got a car i drove basically everyday to random ass places and through different situations for like a month and a half to reinforce the skills i already learned to get used to signs, gps and road markings and to make myself confident and comfortable on the road because real life situations change everyday also my very first drive i done alone was from peterborough to romford essex as i bought the car from peterborough

I passed my test in August of 2022. Got my first car in June 2023. I have to say I was impressed with how much of my knowledge I'd retained. It was mostly just getting back into the rythm, building my confidence again and being less hesitant. On day 2 of car ownership, I think I was better than on my test!

I watched all of your videos that I felt I needed advise with. Had my test today past first time with 6 minors! So happy and appreciative of you're methods!
Thank you! Have to drive up and shake your hand one day haha

Passed my driving test yesterday and I still can't quite believe it! The test itself (despite my nerves beforehand) was really pleasant in hindsight, which considering it was Swansea/Britton Ferry/Britton Ferry Roundabout in morning rush hour (if you know, you know) really surprised me 😂 My manoeuvre was reverse parallel parking and I also did an emergency stop!
Along with my lessons, I also watched (and still watch) your videos, Richard! This video couldn't have popped up at a perfect time 😊 Thank you!

For a week or so after I passed my test i went out for a drive every morning before the early morning traffic started. I negotiated the multiple roundabouts and by-passes while in a relaxed state of mind. I gained a lot of confidence and after a few months i was driving hundreds of miles to holiday destinations. Also, One thing my instructor told me was always look at the number on the road surface as you approach a roundabout. (Having noted the road number on the sign obviously) it’s surprising how many people don’t do that.

Just passed my test yesterday with 2 minors (one was for hesitation, I waited for a car to go at a give way marker even though I could have gone as he was relatively far, second was for correcting my reverse bay park) so excited to get on the road on my own but slightly nervous also. Your videos have been a great help on my driving journey thus far and will continue to watch

Great video as usual Richard! I can a 100% relate to the fact that you do lose some skill if you don't drive for a while after driving test, in my case, I haven't driven for about 3 years, and although I still had basic control over the card, my confidence was really affected, especially in traffic, I guess practice makes perfect after all!

I've had my (american) license for about 5 months now, literally the first time I went for a drive without someone else my car battery died and I had to get my mom and neighbors to come and give me a jump; it was kind of scary at the time because I thought it was a sign of things to come, but here I am now with very little bad things to say about driving.
Love your videos by the way, they've taught me a lot even across the pond.

You really must build up your own confidence to the point where you feel as though you're not as good ? as everyone else ....
you're actually far better than the 'average' driver on the roads today .
And believe me , after over fifty years of driving , if you've got any sense , and hopefully you have , that won't be hard to do .
My advice to you is try not to be influenced by others around you .
If they want to go charging down the road at breakneck speed , let them do it .
Don't play their stupid games .
And don't forget , most people , within five years of passing their test , think they know everything , and in so doing , totally disregard the Highway Code completely .
