- Getting ready for an oncoming winter and thinking about how winter can be both bad and good. Prepping by getting things put away, trying to make room for winter storage and doing things like using a new golf cart battery charger.

I keep thinking if I just put it off it won't happen. I've been wrong every time so far.
I actually enjoy winter here in the north east. I get to spend all winter getting garage projects done. During the summer, i have way to much going on outside to even think about garage projects. So i welcome the winter seasons. Nothin like having coffee and friends over in the garage to have fun doing things, enjoying company, kickin back and relaxing having so much fun.
Boy, that sounds like just the ticket Larry. I do so enjoy a good cup of coffee on a cold day. We hung out on Saturday mornings huddled around a wood stove trying to work up enough motivation to go out and cut wood. Breakfast at 7:00, wood cutting about 10:00 :)
Neil, that winter prep sneaks up on me too! I still have to drain and antifreeze the power washer to get it out of my shop… along with several sniggling little things. Take down the tree house swing, pack up the hammock, flip the bird waterers, bring in the rain gauge…. And probably a dozen more that I forgot!
After seeing what you go through I have no excuse to not get after it this afternoon!
In about 1980, I had to fly out to Phoenix to fix a problem in one of our manufacturing plants. The two hour drive to Kansas City Airport became almost three hours of fighting sleet in a whiteout snow storm.
Fortunately, my extra hour of travel was accommodated by the airlines. They conveniently delayed my flight departure by 8 hours. I sat and watched through the windows, at the boarding gate, as crews fought to clear the drifting foot of sleety wet snow. Finally, about sundown we boarded. After another round or two of de-icing we took off.
Landing in Phoenix was otherworldly. The temperature was about 60f. The walk from the plane to the terminal was pure pleasure in my long sleeved shirt with my coat over my shoulder. It was my first day outside, in over a month, without being bundled up from head to toe.
Overnight the temperature dropped to 50f. So, I put on a tee shirt beneath my long sleeved shirt and headed into the plant.
After visiting the office, I headed out to the production floor to look at the problem. Walking through, I saw a lot of employees bundled up to fend off the cold. You see, the plant had no provision for heat. Parts of it were equipped with air conditioning. Other areas were open to the elements and only had fans to circulate the, normally hot, desert air.
I was met at the problem area by Frank. He was the supervisor with whom I was going to be working for the next three days. His attire is what struck me… insulated ski pants, cold weather gloves, stocking cap and a fur lined parka!
Through chattering teeth Frank greeted me and asked if I forgot my coat. Then he declared, “I hate winter!”.
To which I flippantly replied, “Fifty degrees ain’t bad!”
He didn’t see any humor in that. He shot back, “Easy for you to say. You don’t have to pick oranges in winter clothes!”
To which I had no defense!
Neil, I enjoyed my trip to Phoenix just like a spring break to Florida. The freedom from insulated wrapping and being outside prepared me for the second round of blizzards awaiting me when I returned home.
But, it did make me realize… everyone has to accommodate for the changing seasons… and, no one ever gets it done early!
I have flown many times in the winter and I am always still surprised/amazed/enthralled with the ability to leave a cold climate and arrive in a warm one within hours. It never gets old. And there is something invigorating about it too.
I can picture that Phoenix story perfectly because of relatable plane rides, but my best example of _driving_ between climates was in Idaho. We were driving that bucket truck featured in the chimney video. Up high in the mountains ready to make our descent down into the valley. I don't remember what town it was near. Anyway, we were in the snow and had snowmobilers riding along side the road as we travelled by them in the truck. Granted, this was a late snow fall but it was still cold up there. Way off in the distance down in the low valley (I think they call it the Interstate corridor or something) we could see dust rising up from the horizon. It took only 30 minutes to reach the bottom and while still on the same road we discovered that the dust was coming from farmers already in the fields planting crops! That was the quickest transition I had ever witnessed in a vehicle and sticks in my head very clearly, although I can't recant a story as eloquently as you do! Boy, I wish I was filming things back then like I do now!

You got lucky the Bronco didn’t catch fire. Just finished leaves yesterday, final cleaning and winterizing today. Thankful for sustained 20mph winds Friday to help get the leaves down.
Yes, very lucky. I didn't know how badly it was leaking and that could have been really bad, really quickly! Glad you got that wind to help Jim!

I used to enjoy winter quite often. Cutting next years wood wasn't a job, but something I enjoyed most of the time. Anymore days, pushing 70 years, I don't care for the cold near as much 😫
I could understand that. As I get older, my passion for it is starting to fade. Using the propane in late fall/early spring is kinda nice!
@@digdrivediy My chimney was no longer safe for burning wood, so 5 years ago I put in a corn-pellet stove.
I do field work for a good neighbor in trade for the 150+or- bushel of corn I use each winter.
Looks like a big party going on. LOL. I know I get frustrated with the shorter days. Dark so early!! Thanks for sharing.

Living in central IL and driving a truck for 14 years has given me all the character I ever wanted. I'm ready to be warm and spoiled all the time! I enjoy the bug-free months though, and there's nothing like crawling under a nice warm electric blanket after a day outside in the cold!
I can relate to this for sure. The older I get, the less "character" I really need to develop :)
Seems like this is how most of my project days go. I have a list of things to do, but on each item to do, there is a few things I need do before I can cross each item off. Another great video!

I am still dealing with leaves. I will give up on them this week and get my dock out of the lake. Easy job with the John Deere. Then remove the deck on one and mount the blade.
Yep. Don't know what I'd do without them. I just finished leaves up yesterday and it was snowing on me. I still need to pack it away. I'll probably be mounting the blower with a couple inches already on the ground! :)

Well Neil, part of your story brings me back to my childhood in Maine, but most of it is quite the reverse for me being here in the Sunshine State. I can't stand the super hot and humid summers, winter or part of fall and spring are my favorite times of the year, always further humoring me are native Floridians complaining cause it's in the 50's or 60's LOL. Winter is when I try to get my outside projects done, I even tell my friends and family, please don't call me between April and October, but I don't mind helping out between November and March. Here, the only thing that makes projects during the summer reasonable is my A/C in my shop, no heat needed. I do get your urge to have things stored away properly for sure. I like my yard and property looking clean and neat too and my equipment well cared for. Also, wow a 460 in that Bronco, that's special for sure. Still waiting to see what's going to happen to that 322😉.
I could understand how the heat would keep you inside the same way the extreme cold does here. I've been to Florida in the summer too and well, spent most of my time inside hotel conference center as it was much more pleasant!
I don't know what to do with that 322. One day I'm determined to sell it and the next day I think keep it. I have too many projects so if I get the right offer it's outta here most likely. I don't really need it I suppose... or the other 2 or 3 that I have for that matter! Thanks for watching Don!

I am hoping that maybe it is the rubber portion leaking and I didn't catch it cause I saw it was leaking by the filter too. I'm looking out my office window at that Bronco right now. I will just head out to the winter ice roads, and visit with some of my friends, in their fishing shacks, can't go to any of the communities (Covid restrictions), but getting out in the bush, will be enough.

This was really well done Neil. Heartfelt and I'm sure it connected with many. It did for me. I was a little worried in the beginning with the ominous background music and you suiting up in your armor. I thought you finally snapped and were gonna go all Don Quixote on us and stand out in the yard with a leaf blower to keep the snow from falling on the ground. Sucking the water out of the basketball goal was a little hard core, but you da man!!! I'll say it for you, stubby wrenches are fu$%ing fantastic! @@digdrivediy The siphon segment could have been worse if one of the cats had just pee'd in it. Dodged a bullet there brother! The Barbies are a right of passage. It's when you start pulling the heads off of them and using them as radiator caps on your tractors that we will start to worry.
living in northern maine usually winter comes early, just had our first semi plowable snow of 5ish inches. got to play on the tractor a bit. but even still had stuff to finish picking up.
i dont have a cab and after storms it can hit -30f and colder so i have to keep the tractor near a plug to keep it warmish. -51f is the coldest i have ever been in and i call that scary cold, esp when the power goes out. i really enjoy your vid production and editing it must be quite time consuming.

Yeah, but I haven't ski'd in years. This was our first trip with our daughters and wife along. The girls took to it like they had been waiting their entire lives to hit the slopes! That resort is about 3 hours from home.

So true! Like I mentioned in an email and comment a couple weeks ago I came back from deployment into winter. Looking straight in the face of projects I didn’t finish before I left last winter. And I only one day to stare at them before the first snow hit the ground while I was enjoy thanksgiving with friends and family. It’s important to reflect but it’s more important to be thankful and then also to take each day or season as a reset and a way to start fresh and prioritize projects based both on what matters most and what must be done for the current. It’s great to know how others tackle this or stay calm and motivated. Thanks Neil!
So true Stephen. I'm glad you made it home safe and have the time now to sit and reflect. Whatever you decide to do first will be a step in the right direction. That's what I tell myself is that as long as I'm doing something then at least it's progress - as long as it's towards one of my goals that is!
You are correct about the first cold days of winter, it takes me a few days to get acclimated. We just had our first really cold mornings and it was a shock to my system (physically and mentally). But, on the other hand, I do love dragging out the hooded sweat shirts and Carhartt overalls. After this past summer, I'm tired of sweating and enjoyed the cold weather. Great video, try to stay warm brother.
I'm the same way. Takes a few days to get settled in but then I can deal with it. Gotta get that first layer of wind burn on top and then I'm good to go.

I agree. I just need a few more weeks of fall too. I wasn’t anywhere near prepared for winter this year. About all I have going in terms of preparedness is (maybe) having enough wood cut for heating the house when it’s done. We’re currently framing with 4 inches of snow and 25 degree weather. But like everything else, we’ll make it through and have the story to tell in the end

Thanks, shifting seasonal gears is always a bit of a challenge. I always like to think of it as a two season year with summer and winter being the main ones, and the spring and fall having the similar operation as an automatic transmission, it is that shift between the two main seasons (gears):or prep time for the 2 main seasons, which I never seem to utilize to well until its to late. Probably never change either!!!!!!🙄😉😏👍

Yes, that option has been considered. But then I can't empty it out very easily to hide for winter...
Thanks for reminding me about the garden hose. Do you have any pallet racking in your shop? All I have is my 20x20 shed, and you wouldn’t believe everything I have in there due to my pallet racks. Especially for your smaller tractors, throw them up on the shelf man! You’ll gain tons of room just from that.
My pallet racking is all stacked up in a pile out on the slab. Been meaning to put it together for a number of years now. I'm not sure I'd put it in the shop now with the RV in there or not as I need the floor space up tight to the wall. May just need to add some storage space to put it in?
I use pink RV antifreeze in the basketball base.
Nice Deere just got my plow on my 318 and then I tested the snowblower but I really like the plow I think it’s money we’ll spent love the machine I would like a bigger tractor with a loader

I run battery maintainers on everything that doesn't get used regularly. They greatly extend the life of my batteries.
I'm hoping so too now Rick. At least for the golf cart anyway. I should probably get some for all the 12v that sit around too.
@@digdrivediy I have one on all my tractors, garden tractors and motorcycles. I've got an F350 dually that I don't use much so it has one as well. Really makes the batteries last a lot longer.

Very nice story Neil, but could you tell me how you got your girls to help with the firewood? I got my daughter to help once and somehow I dropped a piece of wood on her foot. She has never helped with wood since and that was over 30 years ago! :)
Ha! I could see how things could turn on me in a hurry too now that they're getting older. But on that particular day I told them we had to haul wood before we could go sledding behind the 4 wheeler. Thankfully they really wanted to go sledding ;) They've been pretty good little helpers for us though so no complaints. Time will tell how long that keeps going though.
Hello Neil my kubota bx1880 is in the shop because the Loader valve leaks Hydraulic oil from. It I dont recommend to anyone who looking for a new kubota bx1880 bx2380 bx23s stay away from it. Loader valve leaks Hydraulic oil.

I don't know what that 322 is for sure. If someone wanted to buy it bad enough I'd probably let it go. I got projects stacking deep but I'd like to work on it. Never enough time though.

The battery charger is doing great! Nice and quiet compared to my old clunky heavy one. The golf cart is 36 volt Club Car.

Was that your drum set on the other side of the bronco because I also play the drums and have several drum sets but my favorite set is my Tama drum set.
Those are my drums but I'm not much of a player yet. Only been playing 3-4 years in a little family cover band. We play local fairs and parties and stuff. That's awesome that you're a drummer Donald. You could likely show me a thing or two!
Hey Neil , I was wondering if on your bronco, does the oil filter face down? Me and my dad did a suspension job on our mustang and the filter collided with the new bigger correction : sway bar (1 inch thick).Also, the engine is a 302, so it’s smaller but I figured anything would help us figure out the mystery.

Mine kinda angles down in the front, very near the front by the crank pulley. It's clear of the suspension if that's what you're saying yours hit on. I hope you get it figured out but I'm not gonna be much help I'm afraid. Best of luck!

What battery jump box do you use?
I'm using an Audew in this video. It works great most of the time. Could be better other times but I always need it in extreme situations. Cranks over really good but tough when a vehicle doesn't want to start. It will crank anything with a dead battery just doesn't want to hang for the long haul when you're trying to bring something back to life that hasn't ran in a long time.
What did you pay for the 755 with the loader?
$4000 in 2015.
