I own a 2013 model nano. Its been 10 years and it still goes strong. Very minor issues or no issues most of the times. Perfect for a country like India. But recommended only within city due to safety reasons. Though it is capable of going anywhere. Space is unbelievable for a car this size. Turning radius is a life saver actually. Love this car!! Hope this comes in elecetric form with all the safety intact. And yes, its sheet metal need to thicker!
I felt very bad from my heart for nano, it was a very much ambitious project by Tata , we can't imagine how it have turned our four wheeler market, if it was a successful project, We would have become 2 biggest car market in the world. Respect for Tata ❤

Same case was with Indica! Tata dealerships were so busy selling it to cab operators, it had become a symbol of taxi in india. Although it was a fantastic, powerful and comfortable family hatchback; hardly any families bought it.
Main problem is tata never gave importance to its passenger vehicle business. They always treated it as a side business until very recent they were pretty unenthusiast as if they don't want to run it. That's why they remained unfocused which reflect in their cars.

I really want nano to come back in market. We have a first batch nano and it never gave us a iota of problem. It runs smooth and AC works good. And I live in hottest place of karnataka. I bought Tata Nano Genx XTA model in 2016 and till date it has never let me down , after the initial hiccups tata really improved Nano , Only if they had continued it improving like adding atleast front airbags, all around disc brakes etc then it would had certainly remained in market at least for city use.

Nano has been my family car for the last 12 years and it still goes strong. After using other cars we realised how good Nano is in terms of space, mileage, AC cooling and ease of driving.
I can proudly say that I am the owner of not just one but two Tata Nanos. A 2012 Tata Nano special edition and a 2017 Tata Nano genx xta. And both of them are still going super strong with zero major issues and now iam contemplating on getting another Tata Nano genx for my wife.
I saw a red colored one on road yesterday... Probably years after😅. And surprisingly quite well maintained. But nostalgia apart, it was basically a four wheeler auto rickshaw

My view on Nanos' failure is its attire and name, firstly it looks a bit odd lika an auto, minimal looks like a car, and the name itself resembles it is a smallest and cheapest among all. a middle class man need a good car in low price for their family, but they never want to showcase themselves in a cheapest among all car. Secondly the car is strictly for local use, not intended and reliable to use it for highway or some long rides atleast occasionally people want to go with their families. What i think is Tata hasn't properly understood the segment..
In addition One more reason of Nano failure is that firstly Tata put up Nano plant in West Bengal where they struggled with state govt and locals due to which they never gained much production and also lost much of their investment And then finally moved to Gujarat.

When we had to buy our first car, I wanted a nano, but my mom firmly put her foot down and insisted on maruti. I am glad that my views were not listened to and we bought alto k10. We still have it and it is an excellent car.
Nano should be a pure hybrid car with .5 l engine. Power should not be a problem if it is a pure hybrid. The price should be around 2-3 lakhs. Rather then the round look it should look like a proper car. Comes with 2 seat,4 seat variation.

I was in school when TATA Nano was launched and I brought an AUTOCAR Magazine to just read about that Car. But soon after the incidents of fire is started to rolled out on media...all hype was vanished just like smoke. I guess the Media reporting on fire incidents is the biggest reason of failure.

The Nano had a few issues but they could have easily been worked out. The Nano is the ideal car for city driving. And also on mountain roads. I've had two Nano cars and the worst that I can say about them is 1. The A pillar gives a blind spot on twisting turning roads. 2. The early model didn't have a temp gauge. Tha later ones all do. 3. The bonnet/engine cover could be a bit more easy to open. You need to twirl six wing bolts, one or two of which inevitably get lost 4. When the car gets older the fuel pump motor installed inside the fuel tank starts getting whimsical. Most of these problems can be solved and if Tata were to restart production of the Nano I will definitely trade in the old one and buy the latest. BTW I also have a Gypsy and Tiago, but the Nano is my vehicle of choice for going to town.
I agree with all your comments except the A Pillar one. I have seen similar issues with high end cars too. E. G. Honda City (Dolphin model). I drive a Mercedes ML350 and Honda Accord V6 here in Canada, but overtime I am in India and drive the nano, I say WOW. Perfect Point A to Point B car and more. In my experience, the nano was bad mouthed by people who did not even own a car.
They say- You learn more from failure than from success. In hindsight, the pricing itself was the problem. You simply cannot build a car for just ₹1 lakh. The company simply bit more than it could chew when it announced the price & stuck to it even though everyone knew it wasn't possible (unless it was ok for the company to have negative margins). Instead they could've tried to build a more valuable car priced in the range of the lowest priced car in the country at that time (say Maruti 800 or Alto). That could've given them some breathing space to come up with a strategy about cost cuttings in the product avoiding too many compromises in quality & reliability.
The only reason why Tata has resurrected its course is N. Chandrashekharan. He was the one who guided TCS to beat Infy and Wipro, and now at the helm of Tata group, he is leading the company beautifully.
When Nano was launched even 1 lakh was too much for those who were Target users according to Ratan Sir... I knew at that time Indigo Indica were good Cars from Tata... If someone had 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh (which was actual price of Tata Nano) most of the people choose 2nd hand Indica Indigo rather than brand new Tata Nano
Problem is in India people attach class status with the cars they own, that's the reason when jio cam for free or cheap price everyone accepted it on the other hand when tata gave nano for cheap price people called it poor man's car etc..

They should make it upto 2.5 lakhs.....and should change the look of car....
Only then it can change the perspective of consumers
I was in school when TATA Nano was launched and I brought an AUTOCAR Magazine to just read about that Car.
But soon after the incidents of fire is started to rolled out on media...all hype was vanished just like smoke.
I guess the Media reporting on fire incidents is the biggest reason of failure.

looks like you are tata fan, relating a cheap car with nation. nation car was maruti 800 which made dream come true for lakhs of people. even now when I see it looks so practical.
The Nano had a few issues but they could have easily been worked out. The Nano is the ideal car for city driving. And also on mountain roads. I've had two Nano cars and the worst that I can say about them is
1. The A pillar gives a blind spot on twisting turning roads.
2. The early model didn't have a temp gauge. Tha later ones all do.
3. The bonnet/engine cover could be a bit more easy to open. You need to twirl six wing bolts, one or two of which inevitably get lost
4. When the car gets older the fuel pump motor installed inside the fuel tank starts getting whimsical.
Most of these problems can be solved and if Tata were to restart production of the Nano I will definitely trade in the old one and buy the latest. BTW I also have a Gypsy and Tiago, but the Nano is my vehicle of choice for going to town.
I agree with all your comments except the A Pillar one. I have seen similar issues with high end cars too. E. G. Honda City (Dolphin model). I drive a Mercedes ML350 and Honda Accord V6 here in Canada, but overtime I am in India and drive the nano, I say WOW. Perfect Point A to Point B car and more.
In my experience, the nano was bad mouthed by people who did not even own a car.
Even till now the employees of tata moters thought they are doing a govt job. That is why the fit finish is still a big challenge for tata.

They say- You learn more from failure than from success. In hindsight, the pricing itself was the problem. You simply cannot build a car for just ₹1 lakh. The company simply bit more than it could chew when it announced the price & stuck to it even though everyone knew it wasn't possible (unless it was ok for the company to have negative margins). Instead they could've tried to build a more valuable car priced in the range of the lowest priced car in the country at that time (say Maruti 800 or Alto). That could've given them some breathing space to come up with a strategy about cost cuttings in the product avoiding too many compromises in quality & reliability.

The only reason why Tata has resurrected its course is N. Chandrashekharan. He was the one who guided TCS to beat Infy and Wipro, and now at the helm of Tata group, he is leading the company beautifully.
Yes definitely he is the man behind mighty tata group. Under him they finalized sanand plant deal and bought 450 aircraft for air india

I knew at that time Indigo Indica were good Cars from Tata... If someone had 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh (which was actual price of Tata Nano) most of the people choose 2nd hand Indica Indigo rather than brand new Tata Nano

Problem is in India people attach class status with the cars they own, that's the reason when jio cam for free or cheap price everyone accepted it on the other hand when tata gave nano for cheap price people called it poor man's car etc..
People keep mocking maruti suzuki but it is the only company in India that is still making some small cars which can be afforded by first time buyer.
Rest of the companies are only catering to middle class buyers.
