  • BEFORE YOU BUY! If you're considering getting the Fujinon XC 50-230mm f4.5-6.7 lens, let me tell you a little bit about my experiences with it. I took it on a four day safari in Northern Tanzania. Hopefully I can answer some of your questions about this lens, and help you make a purchase decision.

    HEY! I still love this lens! But one thing I want to put emphasis on: the aperture! f4.5-6.7 doesn't let in a whole lot of light. This is not a fantastic lens if you're in a low light scenario. It'll do the trick, but you'll have to bump the ISO. Just be aware of that when considering this lens. That is all! Carry on!

      Between this and the 55-200mm, which one do you prefer?

    • @stephengatley8144
      @stephengatley8144 6 лет назад

      Minev The 50-230 is optically great it’s just not as solid as the 55-200 & your shutter speed will be slower in the same lighting, but that might cause a lost shot due to movement in low light!.

    • @mgsxmike

      Thanks, still debating which one to get in the future, I'm primarily going to use it for landscape shoots

      It did pretty good at low light if you have a tripod.
      flic.kr/p/2k9e5v1
      On another image it had the background well focused as well.
      Well I am still learning to use it.

      4 years now, do you still have the same lens or have you upgraded ?
      I can find cheap second hand options, but the reason I upgraded to Fuji is to get great images.
      So I'm thinking if I should go for the 70 to 300, but it's so much more expensive

    Thanks for the review and honest opinion. Just picked up the XC50-230mm. I see that this video is five years old. The lens has firmware updates so hopeful some of the AF and IS has been addressed. I paid $230 for a refurbished lens, which is an incredible value.

    Excellent review! Love this lens: lighter and smaller than xf 55-200; wider focal range makes it much more versatile than the more expensive brother; wider focal length let me maintain this lens longer on the camera, Longer focal range is on the limit for wildlife but acceptable. Image quality is quite impressive for such an inexpensive lens, as well as the OIS. You just have to be patient sometimes with the auto-focus, and carry it to bed when the sun goes down!

    This is the best video on this lens and as a user of the XF 140 2.8, you can't tell me theres a $800+ image quality difference between it and this XC. Your images are amazing!

    I own the XF55-200mm and love it. I Picked xc50-230 up for $130 in the sales as a 'disposable' travel lens, disposable in the sense it would be used in extreme conditions and if lost or stolen it would be no big deal. Wow, it really is a cheap, tacky, piece of plastic junk... BUT, it performs fantastically optically and as a travel lens (if you overlook the build quality). It is sharpish (if you don't pixel peek or print larger than A4) it held up to a lot of abuse and as I didn't care if it got damaged , it caught images my XF55-200 would never contemplate. Coupled with my XF27mm for low light and my XF18-138 general use lenses it made the perfect travel setup. Do yourself a favour, put aside gear snobbery and grab one if you can get one at a good price. I did.

      Thanks! I'm always impressed with the actual quality one can get with the cheapest lenses if they just know what they're doing. I have been testing the Canon 75-300, which is a relatively equivalent lens to this one. Pretty similar results. Solid.

    I really enjoyed your review. It was straight down to Earth with no BS. I had been hesitating on buying this lens because of the slowness and the fact that it is basically plastic build. I currently have the 18-55 XC which is a brilliant lens. I did not want to spend too much on a larger zoom since I wasn't going to use it a lot. But I got a great deal on a used 50-230mm for $160! It's in great condition and hardly used. The person did not need it as he didn't use it and wasn't interested in making money on it. Your review sealed the deal! Thanks!

  • @barrycohen311

    I own this lens, and for the price, it kicks ass. And I own many lenses costing 2-3 times what this lens costs. I enjoyed your video. I will point out, that video is an entirely different world when it comes to image stabilization. Not to mention, shooting video at a 345mm(35mm equivalent) max focal length. The only stabilization usable at that point, is called a tripod. :-) And even with a top of the line tripod, video at such a long focal length is tenuous at best. Even the slightest jerkiness in panning with the tripod is picked up in the video.

    Dear Nick. I have XC50-230 lens with Fujifilm X-A1. My personally experience that its pretty good when i take portrait and flowers. The image quality so good on 230mm and the bokeh is especially beautiful. When i take landscape on 230mm appear some noise and leached but not bad. I will fujfilm X-T100 and really looking forward to what with this lens. Unfortunatelly if you shaked this lens the the lenses knock in it

      Bruno MG Melo It's a pretty solid combo! I was also looking at the same idea but chose what I have because I like the extra range and the 18-55 is known to be one of the best "kit" lenses available. Not just got Fuji, but overall. I'm very happy with it. But the 18-135 would also be great, just significantly less range.

    • @bmmelo2oo7

    i belive in 3:00 that photo of that boy is due to some camara shake more than miss focus

    • @nickslens
      @nickslens  5 лет назад

      It could have been camera shake, but it's shot at 1/2000 so it's not too likely. It also could have been the fact that they weren't exactly staying still and he might have moved slightly forward or backward right after my camera focused. There are a number of factors that could have happened. But basically, the lens is solid when it nails focus!

    Hi, I want to star with photography and I have three options to buy a camera, which one would you choose? thanks in advice,
    1. Fujifilm X-T10 with XC16-50mm, XC50-230mm, and 7 artisans 55mm F1.4 lenses for 650 dollars.
    2. fujifilm XE3 with Fuji XF 23mm and the Fujinon Super EBC XC 50-230mm for about 1000 dollars.
    3. Sony A6000 with 16-50 mm, 55-210mm and a zeiss 16-70mm for about 950 dollars

    • @nickslens
      @nickslens  5 лет назад

      These will all get you great shots. I'd say X-T10 over X-E3. The a6000 is a great camera, but in my experience those sony lenses are not great at all. Cheaper Fuji lenses will generally be better. But I'd say just get a used X-T1 or X-T10 and the 18-55mm kit lens and that's it. That's a fantastic starting point. Get used to what you have and find your shooting style. After a while, you'll decide for yourself what lens you'd like to get next.

      Lalyn Alamag they're both very different lenses. But I use the 18-55 much more. But I guess you'd probably use the 50-230 more if you shot more wildlife. It depends on how you shoot and what you like to shoot.

    How much does the camera body matter? Like can i still get relatively sharp close up photos with this lens on a Fuji x-e2?

    • @nickslens
      @nickslens  2 года назад +1

      The body matters most depending on what you're shooting. More expensive bodies will tend to have better and faster autofocus, more dynamic range, more features, etc.

    Nice Video! Is it possible to focus manually with this lens? Did you ever try to focus on the moon?

    You've just shown that it's the photographer, not the equipment that takes good photos. But it helps.

    Nice review. I am about to buy an xt20 with 16-55mm and 50-230mm for $1200 is it a good deal? What do you think about 16-55mm ? I want to use it for my travel and mainly i am going to do food videos, and landscape & street photos. Will these lens enough for my purpose? Thanks In Advance

    • @nickslens
      @nickslens  6 лет назад +1

      tomtoktak yeah I think those will be enough! You may want faster lenses if you're shooting food. Restaurants tend to be low light situations. From what I've heard about the 16-55, it's okay. Most people shy away from it but go for the 18-55mm, which is known to be one of the best kit lenses of all time.

      I'm not sure exactly. I'd probably google it. But my guess is it's just an iterative version with more effective stabilization.
