  • The Fuji XC50-230 and the XF55-200 cover similar focal lengths. The latter has an excellent reputation, but is the much cheaper XC50-230 any good? Here's my review of the XC50-230, complete with sample images.

I got a great deal just before the XT20 was replaced with the XT30. I bought the following all for $950 (US):
      Xt20

      XC 50-230
I had some concerns about image quality of the XC compared to XF but I think it's very close. I can live with the plastic, lack of aperture ring.

Excellent lens up to to 200mm . Price is right being sold off in Australia for 185 dollars. Great walk around lens. I’ve found to be really sharp in bright sunlight. Turning ISO. To low. Jpegs were so good. Using classic chrome plus 2 colour. Thanks for the video. I hope others try this lens it really is value for money.

It's an excellent lens in situation where you'd be shooting at a higher aperture anyway. I've had a lot of fun shooting hummingbirds with an extension tube from about a foot from the birds. It even has good bekah in these situations. And even the AF in tracking (on the xt3) does a reasonable job tracking the birds. Granted, it doesn't have performance & contruction of the more costly lenses, but it cost a 5th of those lenses and weighs a whole lot less.

I turn the ois off when using fast shutter speeds, anything 1/500 or above. Find I get sharper results as the ois actually creates a little blur when at these speeds. Wasn't sure about it when I first heard about doing it but gave it a try and they were correct...

    I have this lens Ian.
I purchased it shortly after acquiring my X-T2 as a stop gap as money was tight and I'm happy to report that it has far exceeded my expectations.
So much so, that two years on I've still not replaced it with the the XF 55-200mm which was my original intention. As you quite rightly point out, with care and a little patience it's capable of some excellent results. The lack of aperture ring is a bit annoying but like the excellent XF27mm f/2.8 (which I love) you soon work around that and yes, it's relatively slow. But the OIS is excellent and it's far better than it has a right to be considering it's low price (bought new for £185). At some point I may upgrade to the XF 55-200mm but for me at least, that would be purely for "snob" value and for now I'm happy to have it in my bag.
Why would I switch off OIS? Well, if I have it mounted on a tripod I don't want the optics compensating for movement that isn't there, possibly affecting potential image sharpness as a result?

Once you get above a certain shutter speed, enough to produce sharp images without IS, many feel the movement of the stabilization begins to work against image sharpness. So using the old full frame formula, the shutter speed should be 1/focal length. With a zoom in APC mode, should be 1/zoomed out focal length (even if shooting at a shorter focal length) at the full frame equivalency. So with this lens, the minimum shutter speed should be 1/345. However at a photo institute I attended it is recommended to double this speed then you are pretty much guaranteed sharp results, so the new speed would be 1/700 or the fastest closest if setting manual, so 1/1000. Now if this lens is used to shoot dogs, wild life, etc, fast moving stuff, you probably want to set the shutter speed to something like 1/2000. At these speeds the IS is not your friend so turn it off.

I think for overall better quality of the 55-200mm, it is worth sacrificing that little extra 30mm you'd get from the the 50-230mm. I'm going to save a little more to get the xf 55-200mm. I'm curious to know how well this lens would stand up in a poster size print, is it sharp enough and good at colour rendering? I am primarily a fine art landscape photography and on a tight budget, so I'm just curious how well just the image quality would stack up against the more expensive telephoto lens with regards to prints? Thanks.📷✌️🖤

    • @DavcoMediaTV

Tricky question to answer Rocky as we may have differing views on whether on not this lens is 'sharp' enough. I'm sure it would be acceptable to me. For someone else? Who knows? One thing is certain. The XF55-200 is sharper, but so it should be as a more expensive lens.

Thanks for the review Ian. I have been using the XF 18-135 with my X T100 and was wondering whether I should go for the XC 50-230. Once I saw your images, I found them to be quite similar to the ones I had clicked with the kit lens XC 15-45. I hadn't particularly liked them , so invested in the XF 18-135. The only limitation I find with this lens is that when I try to photograph birds, the zoom isn't adequate. I was thus scouting for something with more reach, but wouldn't like to sacrifice quality for reach. I am not a professional, but I like a job well done. Could you suggest a reasonable lens ? Eg, fast autofocus, very sharp, better optics, metal mount and weather resistant. However, it's double the price. The better buy? It all depends on your requirements. If extended focal length is your priority, then the 50-230 is 'better'. If you don"t neèd to get so close to your subject and quality is more important, then the 18-135 is the one to go for if you have the budget.
