Dramatic footage shot on board vessel as it's rammed by Chinese ship

- (16 May 2014) Footage filmed on board a Vietnamese vessel in the Paracel Islands and released on Friday showed a Chinese coast guard ship ram the Vietnamese ship on Tuesday.
Chinese and Vietnamese ships have been locked in a standoff since early this month after Beijing deployed an oil rig near the disputed Islands which are claimed by Hanoi.
However, accusations of ship ramming have come from both sides. On Tuesday, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said Vietnamese ships had rammed Chinese vessels over 150 times since the standoff began.
Meanwhile, anti-China protests in Vietnam have turned violent, killing at least one Chinese worker at a Taiwanese steel mill.
Protests have also been held in the Philippines where more than 100 Filipinos and Vietnamese picketed the Chinese consulate in Manila.
China claims virtually the entire South China Sea, a busy sea lane and fishing ground atop what is believed to be rich oil and gas reserves.
China and ASEAN member states signed a non-binding 2002 declaration urging rival claimant countries to settle their disputes peacefully, refrain from occupying new islands or reefs and launching construction efforts that could raise tensions.
But accusations of repeated violations of the pact have sparked international calls for a legally binding "code of conduct" that could prevent a major armed conflict in the South China Sea.

It's International Maritime Law - The name of the ship must be displayed in English on the stern and/or the bridge in legible letters. The fact that they write "China Coast Guard" on the hull is because English is the global language of commerce. No matter where you go in this world, somebody understands English.
Other interesting fact: All Air Traffic Control communications worldwide are conducted in English. So if a Korean airliner is flying in Italian airspace, they are all talking in English. Maybe not the best English you've ever heard, but still, it's in English.

Chinese Maritime vessels are very aggressive, despite all cause of their ambition to expand sovereignty over the South China Sea.
If the AP correspondent does not go with Vietnam's Maritime vessels, it is impossible to think of the action of a large country like China acting like that, especially for countries in Southeast Asia, including both Vietnam.

My understanding is: We are currently reducing our world police activity, including sea lane protection, and turning more towards regional interests. The bretton woods accord established in 1944 is beginning to be a non issue. More to the point U.S. dollar is reserve currency, and we protect the shipping lanes. This agreement was more : United against The Soviet Union, but that doesn't exist anymore, so no more reason for U.S. to be the world police.
Is that a good thing? Are you tired of paying taxes to protect other country's trade that don't care about us.

I think that all the nations who have aircraft carriers should start circling one of their artificial islands and create wakes so large to wash the piles of sand a way.
