Chasing A Sub 22 5k At 65 Years Young! 🏃‍♂️🔥

  • Turning 65 has been such fun as I have new lines in the sand to aim for!
I love having a goal, and I have always enjoyed seeing how fast I can run,
right back to when it all began 53 years ago in my first race ( apart from sports days!) age 12, the Farnham and District Sports 800m on a grass track in my bare feet!
And despite my times being slower. the joy is in the stretching for an arbitrary goal set by me simply for the joy that striving for it brings me...
Without an attachment to the outcome!
I loved going to the Olympic Park this morning to race a RunThroughUK 5k
    www.runthrough...
I had a secret idea I might be on for a sub 22...
    Let's see what happened!
It was also fabulous to catch up with Vipul and Ed and see Dave, Lizzie and Kevan.
I also ran my race near Dave Mais from Haslemere Border AC, we ended uo meeting on the walk to the station and having a chat!
I was the first female member of the Club when i joined in 1974!
    / haslemereborderac
Run With Julia is an opportunity to talk about your own running journey with a lifetime runner and coach who understands the high and lows, the twists and turns of the running road…
It is also an opportunity to learn about running from a pro
I started competing when I was twelve years old. I loved finding what was possible…
I ran fast times in the 1980’s
    5k 15.50
    5m 26.22
    10k 33.29
    10m 55.10
    1/2m 72.48
    Marathon 2.36.31
In 1985 I had the wonderful experience of winning the Dublin City Marathon.
I also competed in the 1986 Commonwealth Games, but had to retire during the race at 20m due to injury.
The personal experience of the ups and downs has been growthful for me, and also given me a depth of awareness that helps me to coach others and help them return after disappointments and set backs…
All these years later I am still loving competing and finding out what is possible….

65 years YOUNG is an understatement. Simply amazing and inspirational. 22mins is an (sub) elite level time for your age group and a very good time for any age and even for men.
If I am not mistaken the women's world record in the 65-69 age category is 19:57. Just saying... 😁

What she’s doing is amazing! To those watching who are younger, understand that almost all of you will notice significant changes in your fitness level in approximately 5 year increments starting at about age 45 (younger for some and older for a slight few). For me it was about age 50 (60 now), and the best advice I can pass along to those who are 40, 45, 50 & 55 is that “you don’t know what you don’t know.” I work very hard at “HIT” at least two days every week, and am seeing improvement. I’m not running much distance right now as it is just too hot where I reside (desert). I’m putting in the hard work now in preparation for cooler temps later in the year.
I’m a lifelong exerciser (runner, biker, walker, strength training etc) and Army Infantry Veteran as well as retired law enforcement officer. Unfortunately, I’ve been battling back from lingering respiratory issues related to my COVID shot (fortunately I only got one shot). My goal is to eventually compete in the Senior Olympics given I’m still a very fast sprinter, and more of an average runner distance wise. The COVID shot annihilated my endurance, so I’ve been trying for just over 2.5 years to get back to where I was. I’m not there yet, but I’m bound and determined to get there.

Oooh so close! I reckon you will crack the sub 22 this year! I did a couple of sub 23 ParkRun's last year, well, one was a ParkRun at Market Rasen in Lincolnshire, flat, fast and not over popular and at Market Rasen Race Course minus horses! The other was on Trent Embankment at Holme Pierrepont running clubs grand prix, a mad flat dash along Nottingham's river Trent and 400 yards from my Flat! I ran about 17 for 5k when I was 32 but at 61 I'm a bit slower :)

I've tried several carbon plated 'super shoes' but the Vapourfly is the only one I've got on with so my choice for race day. I'm 56 and love running though in recent years a painful Achilles has meant to a few missed races and much missed training frustratingly. Just interested, what kind of interval session you did which gave you confidence that a 22 minute 5K was possible? Hello Geoff, Thank you for your message! I am sorry to hear about your achilles. I always go from the perspective that the body's natural state is to be healthy and there is a way to run free again... I have had every injury under the sun - including achilles trouble - and have found this attitude helpful😀When things hurt, i say to myself 'I'm not sure how, but i know there is a way to run free again...!'
I felt sub 22 was on the cards, because I ran 22.35 two weeks ago and on Tuesday I did a short interval session on the treadmill where I simply did 8 x 90 secs at 14.5kph with a 90 sec jog recovery- and I found them quite doable/ comfortable - so I reckoned i'd be able to hold a faster pace over 5k - and I did! 😀😃

@eddycurrant1380 Hi David, it's not sad or missing the point 🙏🏻it is your choice - and your running journey! And may be a process where you're working it all out! I have had many processes with the watch and the tyranny of tine over distance versus the joy of finding out the time over distance.😀🏃🏼‍♀️
As a track runner 'back in the day', you couldn't escape the lap times being called ! So, I learnt to manage my responses! Then, through the 80's when I was at my fastest, I abandoned the watch as I put myself under a lot of pressure, and it added to it in a way that I did not enjoy at all! And I ran better 'Running free'.
Now I don't put my watch on for easy runs and only occasionally for outdoor intervals- and depending on how I feel I don't always time races- but just recently I'm enjoying seeing my k splits and trying to hold the pace!
My first k on Sat was 4.10- too fast! But also encouraging as I haven't run a 4.10 k for ages!!!
The watch does have a tendency to bring us face to face with ourselves!
I've worked decades to set goals, but let go of being attached to the outcome !
That has been a long journey 😀

Well done on a fantastic time. How many miles a week do you run if you don’t mind me asking? I ran about 30 per week as a 55 year old, but now at 61 I seem to be courting injury once over the 20 mile per week mark.

Hi there, this year i have been running around 30 - 35, but that is because I have been very busy with my work! I intend to run more miles, but i need to create the space for it as it doesn't work for me without sufficient sleep! I think that strength training really helps with keeping injury free, and my easy running is super easy!, and has even been known to inclide coffee shop stops! 😀 And I only do two faster sessions per week. Even when I was super fast in the 80's I ran my easy running very easily and two or even one speed session a week was enough... I did do loads of volume then, up to 100 miles per week, but generally averaging 70 - 80! And I keep thinking more volume would help! But I super listen to my body and it hasn't suggested that this year😂

Great reply. Thanks so much for taking the time. I raced the Knowsley Harriers 4 miler last week (unusual distance I know) and had 27:41. So that’s sub 7:00 pace. By comparison my easy runs are slow at 9:15 to 10:00 pace (by feel) with one speed session a week. I think I just need a bit more volume to be competitive. Not used super shoes yet. I’m saving those until I get back over 80% age grade.

@@steveaye5427 Thats great to be running 6 something 👍I like 4 mile races... There used to be a Worthing Splash point 4 ( may still be!) and i once did The Yorkly gallop ( in the 80's) yes - i agree volume helps, but needs to be integrated slowly and fit in with lifestyle ? sleep /work etc! I love the Super shoes for racing! But i train mainly in barefoot shoes, or barefoot! 😀

@@steveaye5427 wait you train at 9-10 min per mile and race sub 7 min pace? Not likely!

9-10 min/mile is my easy pace. That’s most of my running including easy runs, long run and warm ups and cool downs. I ran with my daughter on Wednesday and averaged 10:00 pace for 45 easy minutes. 9:15 would be the fastest I run at easy, but I’ve no idea of pace as I go purely by effort as I feel like on the day. I only know my pace when I upload afterwards. Same in races and speedwork.
20-30 mins per week is the maximum faster running I do including track work, races and strides.
Today I clocked 21:07 at Croxteth Parkrun in UK, that’s 6:48/mile. Check me out I’ve got nothing to hide.
