- Last week, one of my teenage piano students asked for this classic song when she heard her friend playing it. It's included in the 2011-2012 ABRSM piano exam syllabus (grade 3). Since the ABRSM's version is very short, I've decided to arrange a full version. Here's my take on this song.
The sheet music for this arrangement is available from the official Joni Mitchell web site. It's free to download from the site! - jonimitchell.co...

Thanks everyone, for the lovely comments :)
Last week, one of my teenage students told me that she found a piece of music she wants to play. She heard her friend playing it. So, I asked her whether it’s one of the grade exam pieces. And she replied with a positive no. It’s turned out to be Joni Mitchell’s classic song, *_Both Sides Now_*, which is, in fact, listed in the 2011-2012 ABRSM piano syllabus (grade 3). Who would have thought you’d get to play something like that as an exam piece! Since the ABRSM’s version is very short, I’ve decided to arrange a full version. Here’s my take on this song. I hope you enjoy it.
Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere,
I've looked at clouds that way.
But now they only block the sun,
They rain and they snow on everyone
So many things I would have done,
But clouds got in my way.
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels,
The dizzy dancing way that you feel
As every fairy tale comes real,
I've looked at love that way.
But now it's just another show,
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know,
Don't give yourself away.
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all
Tears and fears and feeling proud,
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds,
I've looked at life that way.
Oh but now old friends they're acting strange,
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day.
I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

This song brings back the old memories. I love your arrangement very much!
I’ve never heard C Major sound so gorgeous !!!
Thank you!
Perhaps because it is in G major? 🤔
Thank you for sharing your talents and making your transcript available. Very much appreciated!
Incredibly moving arrangement. Beautiful, really and you have such a wonderful touch on the keys. I have always loved this song but fell in love with it all over again after hearing Sally Barker's incredible and emotional rendition on The Voice. I wanted to play it on the piano and started looking for varying interpretations as well as the sheet music and here I am! I love what you have done. Thank you!
Glad to hear you find it useful. Thanks for listening!
I love it! It sounds great👼
So beautiful melody!
Lovely version! Thank you!
Here it is, the sheet music of my piano solo arrangement for the Joni Mitchell's *_Both Sides Now_* is officially available, and it's free to download from the Joni's official site. Hopefully the accompanying audio will be there soon but it looks like it's up to the webmaster. Have fun with it!

Hi so beautiful I did this for the ABRSM grade 3 but your version is so so much nicer - where could I get the music sheets from please Best Denise
Hi Denise, thank you for listening. Here's the link to a free downloadable sheet music of this version (N.B. you'd need Acrobat PDF reader). I hope you enjoy playing it! - jonimitchell.com/music/transcription.cfm?id=479
I'm trying to practice the vocals and this is only half :( Beautiful though :)
thankl you very much - I did pass my Grade 3 with the version in the ABRSM of Both Sides Now - however yours seems a tad more detailed, albeit beautiful, would you have any tips on how to tackle it, as the piano does not come easy to me at all. Sadly !!! i only wish it did, but I love the beast so much !!! Any tips would be much appreciated Denise
Yes, it's a little bit more intricate compared to Grade 3 version, because of the added harmonies and syncopated rhythms to make the sound fuller. I'd recommend you start working on the left hand part only and get really comfortable with it. Since your right hand is free, see if you can sing along the song whilst your left hand is playing, then you'll hear how the left hand part fit into the song. This will surprisingly help you greatly in acquiring coordination between the hands! If you listen to Joni's original version, you'll notice I modified the melody line quite a bit to make it more suitable for piano solo playing. You may try getting yourself familiar with the song first to be able to sing along or just humming. Since I followed the bar (measure) count exactly as Joni's original, singing will fit no problem with my version. Then you can work on the right hand part. If you find adding all notes in difficult, you can thin them out as you wish Technically, here're some tips: Your fingers should feel strong as steel but your wrists and arms are always relaxed and flexible. Also make sure your thumbs feel always relaxed. I hope it helps. Thank you for taking such interest in learning this version!
thank you very much for your help, so what grade would your version be please
Best Denise
I'd say grade 4 (UK exam standard), simple melody part is not that tricky but when the melody line is layered with another line (part writing), that's what makes it a little challenging hence more harmonically fuller and pleasing. Good luck!
