A good example of the type of jazz I like: the ability to improvise without losing the beauty of the underlying melody.

Really great how Mr. Hersch transformed the song into this piano version . I'm very impressed by this....It becomes more a "sacred song" than some others have tried to do. What a wonderful jazz interpretation it is.... reflecting about life. ...so profound .... great craftsmanship.

Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
    And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
    It's cloud's illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
Moons and Junes and ferries wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way
But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
    Don't give yourself away
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
    It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all
Tears and fears and feeling proud,
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way
But now old friends they're acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
    In living every day.
I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
    It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
    It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
    -Joni Mitchell

No lyrics have touched me so deeply or stayed with me for so long as those of "Both Sides Now." Reducing it to an instrumental (however masterfully and sensitively played) reminds me of that other great Joni Mitchell song, in which she sings: "You don't what you've got til it's gone."

The Jazz at Lincoln Center has 3 musical venues, the Rose Theater which is the main music hall, The Appel Room which is a smaller more informal venue overlooking Columbus Circle (where this performance occurred), and Dizzy's which is more like a jazz club space with dinner tables overlooking Broadway. The Big Band plays in Rose Hall Theater.

    • @afonsosousa2684

Ted Greene seems to have been the only one capable of conveying the power of the lyrics instrumentally. Great playing by Hersch as always, but the folk element, so crucial to the song, is essentially gone.

  • @mibentgen
    @mibentgen 11 месяцев назад

overambitious and a little scattered. very ingenious soft jazz quickly changes to confused strumming and back again. Ultimately without a concept and a display of possibilities that don't do justice to the delicate song and its quiet intention. This is not how I imagined the two sides would sound.
