Very useful video. I’m eventually planning to purchase an A9 and this video was extremely useful to show how flexible and versatile it can be. Love your setup. Keep up the awesome content 👊🏻
After watching your videos I bought the A9II. It’s a camera that’s in a league of its own. I haven’t tried shooting landscapes yet, but I hope it does well with it despite just 24MPs.
Can you use the my menu section to setup for a specific shooting event? I want to have a wuick way to setup for shooting fireworks, without having to remember the settings I need for that specific type of photography. Longer shutters to get the color streaks, etc. Or am I better off setting M1 or M2 for that?
Hello Wes, thx for the video. Looks like a good setup! 👍🏻 I know you take pictures in RAW and the DRO function affects jpg ... but: does this not also affect the jpg preview, i.e. don't the pictures in the preview look "brighter" than the raws later?
Hmm. I haven’t checked this, but it would effect the preview, yes, as any jpg change alters the preview. I consider that a somewhat minor thing, though.
Wes Perry ... I think also that's in fact not a big deal. For me, I shoot often raw and jpg simultaneously, the jpgs are about half a stop brighter than the raws. This is not a problem for correction in lightroom.
Probably not new. But used, especially if you’re planning on using electronic shutter mostly, you can get an amazing deal on it, and it should work pretty much forever.
I thought it was you who commented on Pye’s video on DSLR. Man, that’s some un-called for trolling. Here’s a guy who gives so much valuable information for free that’s over and above feeding GAS, and I thought you were a nice guy
Lol. I simply consider that whole mindset to be despicable. Sorry that my advocacy for the customer offends you. Photographers aren’t magical creatures that are better than everyone else. Few consumers understand why we think so highly of ourselves, and believe it or not, they notice what jerks we all are. They just don’t think there’s anything they can do about it, because they have few options.
Wes Perry There’s lots of options - the worlds full of photographers. But Pye answered you specifically in his latest video. I think if you were thinking a bit more about what he said rather than trigger reacting, you’d be a bit slower off the mark and perhaps more thoughtful with your response.
I think my response was quite well considered, actually. Watching the new video now, and it’s definitely much better explained this time around. I’ve spent way too much time around shady sales tactics in my life, so many of his words in the original video set off red flags like crazy for me.
Thanks Wes this was really helpful!! I need help with my Sony a9 it’s my first camera. I’m having issues fixing this problem it says “This operation or setting not available as follows ‘Shoot Mode’ and intelligent Auto’ if anyone can help me with this it’ll be very helpful thank you in advance
I assume your top dial is set to the green intelligent auto mode, instead of P,A,S or M. In intelligent auto most features in the camera can’t be altered or configured, because the camera intends to handle them all automatically.
Just have to learn about camera controls ;) Being an f4 lens, it doesn’t gather a lot of light, so if you’re shopping indoors in auto modes, the camera will be doing what it can to make your image brighter. One of those things is making the shutter speed longer. You can raise your iso higher to prevent this, depending on what mode you’re in. Or just use more light ;) I’m afraid I can’t tell you in the comments section how to work in Aperture priority mode, because it looks like you have a lot of stuff to learn, more than I can say here! But you’ll want to make sure your shutter speed is faster than 1/125 to keep your images sharp. Unless you have shakes hands, then maybe even faster, like 1/160 or 1/200 :)
Hi, I'm a wedding photographer and I'm considering switching to Sony A9 from Nikon DSLR. The only reason for buying A9 for me is banding free silent shutter. Could you tell me, do you use silent shutter in churches all the time or are there churches that you need to change to mechanical shutter? Could you tell me % of times that you had to change to mechanical shutter? It would be very helpful to me. Sorry for my bad English.
Glad you’re thinking about this. It depends on the church of course. For me I might switch to mechanical 5% of the time. But you always have to be careful and not get overconfident. It’s not perfect just yet. On the a7iii I have to switch to mechanical about 70% of the time. Which makes me not even try silent shutter a lot of the time, because it takes time to figure out whether or not you’re getting banding, which often feels like a waste when it fails so often. I mostly just use the silent shutter on the a7iii outside in natural light.
This video is for those who find Mark’s to be too long/too slow. Interestingly enough, he addressed this in this most recent video today, when he suggested that those people watch his video at 1.5x speed.
Another helpful video! Just received my A9 today and found this inspiring.
Thanks Wes, I am using quite a few of your suggested settings, a great video for someone like me to get a handle on the A9.
happy to help!
Hi Wes, your complete A9 set up was brilliant, fancy doing the same for the new A71V
If I manage to get my hands on one for long enough! Still waiting my chance. Lol
Thank you Wes... I do appreciate you taking the time out to help me set up this beast of a shooting machine with this video!!!

“Just 24MP”. That’s still a lot of pixels 😉
Wes Perry True! But typically for landscapes people prefer more. But nailing focus is more important, haha.

Yeah that’s more an M1/2 sort of thing
Fantastic video, Wes. Thank you very much for sharing your perspective on each of the settings you change during setup.
Second
The a9, my favourite camera with the R4
I’d gladly trade my a9 for an a9ii, though 😉
Saving this video.

Hello, how can I solve the banding on my a9? is it configuration? or factory fault? it happens to me when i use high speeds of disoaro
What is your light source and exposure settings (aperture, shutter speed, iso)
Do you think it is a good idea to buy an a9 in 2021 and use it with very compact (mostly pancake) lenses?
Probably not new. But used, especially if you’re planning on using electronic shutter mostly, you can get an amazing deal on it, and it should work pretty much forever.
Wes Perry thank you for your answer! :-)
amazing video

Wes Perry ohh i see, can that be fixed ?
You just need to get out of Auto mode is all.
Turn the dial to one of those four modes.
Thank you so much it worked! God bless you man
Can I custom deferent button on battery grip for a9¿:) I mean deferent between numbers on button1,2 ,thanks

You’d need Very steady hands to get a sharp picture at 1/30!
thank you there are not enough cats in camera videos. :)

i have difficulty following this instruction. please put the screen to the camera more longer and less on your face talking.
Not possible to keep up with your settings of A9 in this video. Have to constantly pause and then continue. Mark Galer's video is much better.
