I have owned Hiluxs models from 1979 to 2012. petrol and diesels. 6 of them. My last Ute was a ranger. I now own a v6 Amarok. If you are a true tradie and you can afford it, the current Amarok is the best Ute on the market.

Got to drive the Amarok Ultimate 580 this week. Did 400KM's over 3 days. As A Hilux driver it blew me away. We know the Hilux is king off road, but the Amarok is king on the road. Chalk and Cheese. The engine is smooth and so much power and the wide stance gives stability. Full time 4WD is a big advantage for the Amarok over the Hilux, Ranger etc which are 2WD on the road. Horses for courses off course, depend's what you want? Ranger has bells and whistles, not convinced on it's reliability though, many friends have electrical issues. The Hilux king off road, reliable etc but it's utilitarian compared to the Amarok IMO.
Drove both and drove out with the v6 Amarok. Hands down better car
Um, so what’s up with the merc apparently bending it’s tray with less than 300kg in it so you can’t close the tail gate anymore. Happened on The Grand Tour as well!
Really like my Highline V6, can get a lot of truck and mods for way less than these models. But the Merc fit and finish and feature set is great. But you can get that in the base model too.

Dose the Highline come with tyre pressure monitoring system ?? I have the Ultimate ( the Mrs demanded a blue one and they only came in the ultimate). Hey I'm not complaining
Would be great if you could discuss towing a camping trailer while overlanding.

I have an Amarok V6 and it tows my 2600kg (fully loaded) caravan and two spare wheels and 6 jerrycan backpack plus 3Kw generator and recovery gear 4 water jerrycans plus in the tub and the fuel economy is 16>18 LT per 100 Km but it doesn't miss a beat been out to Sapphire and Ruby vale down to Wedderburn and thru the Blue mountains without a problem. Hope this gives you some info. Oh if your going off road get some steel rims and chunky monkey tyres. Cheers
He obviously didn’t do his home work with VW before mentioning the low range. If he did he would know that 1st gear is geared for low range and that when the off-road mowed button is activated the Amarok knows to use 1st gear to give maximum traction.
Amarok 1st Gear: 4.714 (8 speed)
X class 1st gear 4.377 (7 speed)
Hilux 1st gear 3.600 (6 speed)
And he obviously hasn’t driven one off road long enough, big toe sniffs the pedal and you point she’ll go without a single complaint.
Also not bad ratio considering it’s not a dedicated low range gear like the rest .
True... Same thing I wondered about... I have the Amarok V6 and many other people have that misconception that the V6 is not made for off-road... But when you buy your Amarok from a well trained dealer... They too will show you how exactly VW uses the three buttons to do what other UTEs can do... VW Simply uses a different approach to deliver a more sophisticated vehicle... Think about it.. Why would they come into the market unprepared?

The second i sat in a X-Class, i knew it wasn’t a true Mercedes. It just felt cheap and that huge ugly gear shifter looks out of place. They cut a lot of corners.
Because what you call cheap is from a Nissan where the X class is based on…

I think you also forgot to mention that the amarok has no power in reverse. They de tuned reverse gear. Now you cant reverse a trailer up your drive way, or reverse from a bog hole. RUclips amarok reversing issues

I reverse my fully loaded caravan up the kerb and into my yard without any problems and it is 500mm from kerb to the back gate
There's one lacking option from the amarok, which is the only(petty) reason I wouldn't buy one.....
Proximity start and entry.
For the money, and the VAG technology in general, it dumbfounds me why you can't get it yet.

I am happy wirh my Nissan Navara NP 300, 2017. Hauling, daily driving, range, TOC ist perfect for me. I have column shift and 4 cyl. diesel, king cap. My Next pick up is a Nissan Titan Worrier if it is available in my region or I keep my midzise Navara NP 300.

The last model - that one- got a merc motor but the previous 2 years it was the 2.3l Nissan. Discontinued. VW is way better I'll be buying one after I've got bored with my XC90.
At Benz you just pay for the shiny star in the bonnet. The Volksi is the real deal

Creative Noise Phil I must say on our country Chile Mercedes Benz is way better that vw on service and sales progress .. Saying that couple of weeks ago I test a Mercedes x350 that come with Mercedes engine and the x250 and x350 the only that share with Nissan is "the chassis " but ! For the record .. That chassis was tune and stretch out for wider and better handling ability so what people think or people say that x class is just a badge pick up rebranded and they do nothing more . It's false you must to test it

C'mon 4x4Australia, every bloke is waiting for a 2019 thorough comparison review of the flagship 4x4 utes.. Ranger Raptor, Hilux Rugged X, Amarok V6 Ultimate, Colorado Z71 Xtreme and etc.. real world testing in the outback environment would single out the showp pony's from the work horses !
All utes in the future are going to be joint ventures most of them are now excluding the Amacock and Slowlux.

Imo these vehicles should be broadly categorised under Poser vs Real class. A bit ridiculous to take $70k+ vehicle to the outback..Poser ute test may include ingress/egress for nana & kids eg sidesteps, grab handle , city maneuverability etc

Yet again the Renault / Nissan X-Class bites the dust - its a joke of a "Mercedes"! I sincerely hope that the next generation X-Class would be a true Mercedes (G-Class chassis and drivetrain with 3X locking diffs would be great) with aspects that would beat the opposition. But for now, if I see and X-Class on the road, I wonder if the owner is insane...
Johan Kriek The smaller 4 pot diesels in the X-Class are the Renault/Nissan engines but the V6 is pure Merc, just the chassis is Navara based.
But I 100% agree the X-Class should’ve been based off the G-Class. It’s strange cos Merc already had 4cyl diesels and a perfectly good off-road powerhouse before the X-Class came out, yet they chose to go to Nissan for chassis and engines
My favourite Pickup in this segment is the Toyota, I wish they would put the LandCrusier engine in it to compete with these two amazing trucks!

I doubt it. The Ram and its rivals are still too expensive for many Australians. (and too oversized for the city slickers that carry tools in Rangers.)

You would have to be insane to buy an Amarok!! No curtain airbags, means an owner does not value their passengers life. One side impact, even at low speed, means the ‘kids’ in the back will be gone through head trauma. Just ask around at ER!
