  • It’s the eternal question: what boutique burger chain makes the better burger? The Meat Show host and resident carnivore Nick Solares puts two regional favorites to the text - California-born (and animal style inventor) In-n-Out verses Danny Meyer fast food darling Shake Shack. Who will come out on top? Watch the video above to find out.

+Jacksirrom i tasted it on the east coast. Hands down In N Out wins. it's just in taste that the burger lacks that sort of unique taste i feel like. Like it's good and shit, but it's like bland at the same time you know?

+Andrew Jackson starts as a thick piece of ground burger, with just salt and pepper sprinkled on, pressed flat onto a flat grill. No open flame.

    • @andrewjackson7476

Jacksirrom I would prefer In&Out then, although I would still pay a little more if in and out used open flame for that char & smoky taste. I am not a religious person, but I like that the founder of In&out is God fearing Honest man, out to provide best for his fellow man. He has truly stayed true to principle. Everyone else is Mafia Swindler by comparison.

      Best Burgers
      #1 - Shake Shack
      #2 - Five Guys
      #3 - Culver's
      #4 - In-N-Out
      #5 - Smashburger
In-N-Out burgers are inexpensive and have tasty toppings but quality of beef is cheap. Hence, why they don't cost much. Also, they have the worst tasting fries in the world.

I think another important distinction is that In-n-Out is cheaper, in general than most competitive "boutique burgers" -are we call them that now?
Also, I think grilled onions are required for any In-n-out burger.

    • @Loathomar
      @Loathomar 8 лет назад +4

+hoshnasi Yup, I was thinking the same thing. In-n-out's Double double is about $3, which seems to change place to place, while a Shake shack burger is $5.29 in LA.

IMO In-N-Out burgers without grilled unions are nothin’ special...all the greatness of their burger revolves around, is highly enhanced, comes out with the necessity of grilled unions. That version kills shake shack, that outside of the shakes is mediocre. The buns are some of the worst ever do NOT like soggy ;(

I'm sure Shake Shack is fine. But Shake Shack costs TWICE AS MUCH as In-N-Out. You shouldn't be comparing In-N-Out to Shake Shack, or Father's Office, or some other new age burger concoction. You should be comparing it to McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Jack In The Box and Carls Jr. Because it's at that price point. On that basis, In-N-Out must win, walking away.

shake shack burgers are kind of only okay for me because nick is right about the bun, the bun is fluffy and buttery which doesn't go well because the burger and sauce is greasy also. Maybe this is a bit presumptuous, but I think In-n-Out being a rarity and "new" thing in Texas means that the people who work there don't have the same "home" passion for In-n-Out as we do on the west coast. That being said, maybe your Texan In-n-Out burger doesn't have the same love in it as the Californian one. (I live just several miles away from THE original In-n-Out in Baldwin Park, and other original ones)

Funny, because when I had Shake Shack I thought it was fairly rated. Not under, not over. Just a good burger.
When I had In-N-Out, I thought it didn't really live up to the hype. Found it to be a good burger, but more like a notch above Wendy's rather than the transcendental experience it was hyped up to be. Let's also not forget that their fries are virtually inedible.
For me Shake Shack is the clear winner.

I pretty much agreed with this dude. I would also say that pound-for-pound Shake Shack makes the better burger. In my opinion the Shack Sauce is better than the In-N-Out spread, and that for me makes Shake Shack the winner. But the Shake Shack burger only barely squeaks by the In-N-Out burger while being nearly double the price. Pound-for-pound Shake Shack wins barely, but pound-for-dollar (is that the term I'm looking for?) In-N-Out wins by a landslide. By that ruling, I would eat at In-N-Out far more regularly than I would at Shake Shack. But I love both places and would eat at either any day of the week.

Shake shake is a national chain. It is traded on wall street. Where do you get off with that Boutique crap? The idea of thinner paddies is lost on you. The best part of a burger paddy is the char. Double the paddies double the char. Potato buns? I'll drop some chips in my burger if I'm longing for Ireland's 20th century staple.

Something about the In-n-out experience. Concrete, freeway noise, the long line of cars etc. Burger Habit has better burgers ( The Santa Barbara is great) but the ambiance is just a little too "sanitary". I'll opt for In-n-out 3x3 and well done fries and a handful of those incredibly hot little yellow chilis.

    I go with Shake Shack.
They are both delicious and I know that In n' out has better prices and actually kinda better flavor, but shake shack has wayy better ingredients (I'm not just talking about the meat, as in n' out's also great, but also veggies, bun and stuff) And after eating an in n' out burger I feel heavy and not well, after eating a shake shack burger I feel great.
They are both really yummy, It just depends on the person, cause if you are more of a healthy eater who does not have a problem with splurging then you may prefer shake shack, if you are more of a person who wants food for the flavor and in a lower budget, then in n' out's for you. I personally like shake shack better, but it just depends, you can't compare they are different styles.

As far as everyday working bachelor food, In-n-Out burger makes for an affordable and quality balanced meal, since you can request protein style or extra lettuce and tomato at no additional cost.

I first went to a In N Out in the late 60's and early 70's. The closest one to us is 140 miles away. During recent travels we went to a Shake Shack for the very first time. The shake was pretty good and had to be eaten with a spoon. It didn't have quite enough chocolate for me. The burger was great! It tastes different than an In N Out burger. I like the In N Out shake better as they are more chocolaty and can be eaten without a spoon. I hate using straws for anything so I prefer a shake that I can drink slowly, slow because it is thick. As for which is better, I don't think a comparison is appropriate. Both have different tastes. In N Out tastes like the burgers you would get at small mom and pop, hole in the wall, burger places in the 1950's. They taste fresher and they are crunchy with ample amounts of lettuce, tomato and onion. They have a great sauce and the Shake Shack does not.
There is a Five Guys Burgers and Fries across the street from the Shake Shack we went to. When we travel to the area again we are going to try it to see how it compares. Some of the best burgers I have found across the country and the best malts (they taste better than a shake to me) I've had have been at Dairy Queens. I also like finding a good A & W, which are becoming far fewer in numbers. I don't drink sodas, but love an A & W on tap.

Yes, In-N-Out is better when you're on a budget. However, if you want the best burger and have the money, the Shake Shack is the best by far

@@FreedomFighter2112 I've eaten at a Shake Shack and the shakes were very good. I've had better at Dairy Queen, however. The burgers weren't better than In-N-Out, just different. Both Shake Shack and In-N-Out are really equal, but different. The fries at In-N-Out are better. Then there is the latter's "secret menu," I'm not sure if Shake Shack allows ordering something not on the menu.

      Best Burgers
      #1 - Shake Shack
      #2 - Five Guys
      #3 - Culver's
      #4 - In-N-Out
      #5 - Smashburger
In-N-Out burgers are inexpensive and have tasty toppings but quality of beef is cheap. Hence, why they don't cost much. Also, they have the worst tasting fries in the world.

  • @MarleneSTaylor
    @MarleneSTaylor 7 лет назад

Why is price not taken into account? For the price of an In-N-Out burger you can buy like 3 of them for the price of any other burger like at SS or 5 guys. Not to mention it's NEVER as greasy as those counter parts. I may be biased. I grew up on In-N-Out and now on the East Coast never found a burger as cheap and as fresh to trump it. And yes, I like brioche buns, so I agree with the bun being one of the best parts of an In-N-Out burger. Love onion? You can get it both fresh and grilled and the fresh is ALWAYS a solid full slice of the whole onion, not just a slice or two of individual rings like everywhere else. They aren't shy.

In an Out is the Starbucks of burger culture and is literally OK when it comes to fast food burgers but is not some holy experience that changes the course of young peoples lives. Go ahead and instaslam your meal to let your friends know you're trendy AF. Shake Shack. Honestly a lot of people hyped it up and my first experience was terrible. For that amount of money on a burger I better see a new color in the rainbow or at least sit in my car for 3 minutes panting before I can carry on with my day. Both burgers get plenty of hype that seldom has left me THAT satisfied. While in Austin I would drive people to a Mighty Fine burger for a true fast food burger delight. Big patties, fresh ingredients all locally sourced within a few hundred miles. It knocks the hype burgers out of the park.

I grew up in california my entire life, then went off to college out in Boston. In n out is the first meal I get when I come back to california. I have had shake shack multiple times and it just doesn't do it the same way in n out does. Their fries at shake shack are great I give them that, but animal style fries at in n out are one of my favorite things at a fast food joint. The quality of In n Out's ingredients are uncanny to the rest. You mix high quality, great taste, and an extremely affordable price you create magic. That is what in n out has done for me. Shake shack is good, but I don't think the taste is as good as it should be considering the prices are ridiculous compared to in n out.

These burgers needed to be judged more on the merits of the product and less on the intrinsic and sentimental value. While you touched on the former a little bit, the latter seemed to cloud the issue. Honestly, a burger's historical performance does little to influence me. You could have started with a more comprehensive segment on each burger's terroir then answered the question of "Which you prefer." And then follow it up stating variables that may have contributed to why the other burger underperformed i.e. "I may be inclined towards the newer Shake Shack Burger because it's a new flavor that does justice to the concept of the hamburger juxtaposed against being burnt out on the Double Double as an unintended side-effect of it's longevity and staying power."
