  • In-N-Out Burger is perhaps one of the most famous fast food chains in America, if not regarded as one of the best fast food chains in the world. Many people attest to the In-N-Out never frozen burger patties, the In-N-Out fries, particularly the In-N-Out animal style fries, and the In-N-Out milkshakes as legendary. However, is it really that great? Or is In-N-Out overrated? On my trip to LA I headed straight for this California burger joint to get to the bottom of whether or not In-N-Out is legit or not.
While there are many famous people who love the chain, most notably Anthony Bourdain and In-N-Out burger, he has stated his love for the Southern California great eat many times, many vloggers and RUclipsrs have stated they do not believe the west coast burger chain is that great. So what is it? Are Californians just riding off hype and nostalgia? Or are the critics just too hyped up and being too critical?
We will provide our typical delicious food faces with an In-N-Out mukbang, including the In-N-Out burger secret menu item of In-N-Out animal fries, and the In-N-Out sauce, but we will answer some key questions. If it lives up to the hype: why is In-N-Out so good? And if not, why are In-N-Out fries so bad? Stay tuned for another episode of UA Eats! As always we pledge to provide honest reviews!

For their fries I've found over the years the faster you eat them the better they taste, once they get cold they fall of imo. The burgers aren't the greatest in the world but they are still a really tasty burger especially after you know how you like it customized, order your meat medium if you want it juicier. Best part is they pay their employees more than McDonalds and they don't price gouge their customers. Took my family to McD's two weeks ago and family of 3 cost $52, went to in n out last week same family of 3 cost $28.

And he probably went to the worst and busiest In-N-Out in the Los Angeles area. You can tell it's going to be really busy location whenever you see a two lane drive-thru. So I've only been to LA twice, and never made it to an In-n-out. Next time I'm there, I'm most definitely going! The potatoes need to be soaked to release starch, that's basic cooking. Shake Shack is great, there's one 2 minutes from Mom & Dad's house. Remember, the owner Danny Meyer is also a Michelin Star restauranteur, so you're getting that quality. 5 Guys is also right near me, that's my go-to for a fast food burger. The best recipe I've ever used involves double-frying them and freezing them in between. Gives them a fluffy interior. Taste is subjective. For a California restaurant serving a basic three component combo, burgers, fries and beverages the price is on point. By far a price that is reasonable and appreciated living in California. Service , speed and accuracy are a benchmark for other restaurants to aspire to. IN-n-Out is in a class of its own. Five guys in Maryland cost me $23 and change for a burger, regular fries and fountain drink. Remember IN-n-Out is family owned with no franchises. Fresh beef, fresh potatoes, and a secret menu that is a favorite for those that know. IN-n-Out is a league of its own. They have the best pay rates for employees and benefits in the Quick service industry. There retention rate is the best in the business. IN-n-Out is far more than a burger joint, it’s an institution!

Shake Shack & Five Guys are NOT fast food! They don't even have drive throughs. Not that I consider In-n-out to be fast food. You're also not even in the same price tier with Shake Shack or Five Guys. They are at least 30% more expensive if not double. Especially with a milk shake. Also STFU and just eat the damn food. In-n-out has the shortest shelf life of any of the burger joints. I get that you need to make a review, but you're letting the food go cold. Not that it will save the fries. Everyone agrees they are disgusting. However, they are strait up garbage if you wait more than 5 min. Animal Style is, IMO the only way to make them even palatable. That, or ask for "well done" friend and ask for a pack of "spread" on the side.

    1) Get your Double Double and cheese with green chiles. (I also do no lettuce, just my thing,)
    2) Always order any fries with “Burn the fries”. That way they aren’t burnt but crispier.
    3) Next time try a Neapolitan shake, 3 levels of flavor to enjoy separately or mix. Very tasty!

Good first time experience. I’m not a fan of the fries but I did learn ask for them “well done” and they double drop them, kinda like McD. This is for regular fries, I’d let them do Animal Style the way they do. The big thing is the not-so-secret Secret Menu. Try a DD Animal Style next time. Google for all the myriad of options. Yes, they can be busy at meal times 7pm dinner. That’s Anthony Bourdain’s favorite location but he loved the chain totally. He always traveled when he was a live and doing his show. The LAX location was like you found out very convenient. That Uber deal sounds awful.
Depending on your time in LA and your proximity to Marina del Rey I’d like to suggest Killer Shrimp and of course the dish they named the restaurant after. They have presence on all the big socials for info. Have fun! I’m looking forward to Phillipe’s I’ve only been once but was blown away. It’s just not near me. Hey UA - from a Californian's perspective, it's best to take advantage of the not-so-secret menu at In-N-Out. I like to get my burger cooked medium-well with animal style (it's FREE for burgers, unlike the fries) and add chili peppers (also free). I like my fries cooked well-done, so they're nice and crispy. I'm not a huge fan of the standard fries either, which is why I opt for well-done fries. And, you can mix-and-match your milkshake as Neapolitan (chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry mixed) or any two of the three. I usually get chocolate-vanilla mixed. These hacks make the In-N-Out experience significantly better for me. Maybe give it a shot next time.
And Five Guys is great too, but way more expensive. As others have said, you get what you pay for. I'll try Shake Shack one of these days.

Every other burger place in Las Vegas charges 20$ for a meal. In an out burger charges 12.00$. I’m from the east coast and all meals cost around the same price. But when I’m in Vegas they all think they can charge 7 more dollars for the same meal. In and out charges the same price. For that reason alone it wins. The taste is as good as all the restaurants. Except White Castle. You forgot to mention free refills for the same price . I give In and out an A + for Service quality and most of all price.

(my order is always animal fries, double double w chillies and a LARGE choco/vanilla shake ;)
Also, you def gotta eat it asap during cold weather otherwise it'll def get a bit dry. The animal fries stay great even if you pop em in the microwave, but yes their regular fry is completely unremarkable if not bad.

Burgers aren't an everyday or even an every month thing so I'd rather spend the extra money when I do have a burger to get a really nice elevated burger with high quality meat and toppings. I'd rather buy a $20 burger from a steakhouse once every month than get an in n out burger 4 times in that same month. I'm not really a fast food person though. I personally LOVE LOVE LOVE the 3x3 animal style, with whole grilled onions + raw onions, extra toasted buns with chopped chillis. Fries have to be well done.

i love In and Out burger. I also LIKE Shake Shack burgers. The first time I had Shake Shack I thought it was much better than In and Out. The meat patty is better in flavor than the In and Out patty. But one thing I've noticed is that the consistency between the two. Almost every time I get a Shake Shack burger it always looks thrown together sloppily. Sometimes the burger is only on 30% of the bun!
Every once in a blue moon I get a really nice Shake Shack burger but usually it looks like hell. But at In and Out the bun is always fresh and sitting on top of the ingredients which are always fresh. Much fresher than In and Out. And I've been through more than a few In and Out Burgers- LA, Bay Area, Vegas, etc. And the quality is top notch at all of them. The one in LA was particularly great. So good I went back in to get another before my return trip to NY!
And of course the price- so much cheaper than Shake Shack. For me all things together make In and Out the winner for me. Just having a great meat patty alone isn't enough. Maybe quality of Shake Shack has gone down since it expanded? When they had the only one in Madison Park Midtown.. that one was great. Still was more expensive but at that time I thought it was a lot better than In and Out. But now i've changed my mind. I always have In and Out at least a few times when I come to the West Coast. And also...if you go during lunch or dinner... its always busy like that. Every single time...a testament to the love Californians have for the brand. Now if we could only get one on the East Coast...:)

I always see comments that are like "In-N-Out is the best!!!!" "But Shake Shack is better" "You can't compare In-N-Out to Shake Shack, Shake Shack is more expensive!!!" If it's the best, it's the best, you can't be like "it's the best within the specific band of hamburgers that cost exactly 5 dollars!!!" I mean, In-N-Out is fine and it fills a niche, but it is no more an incredible burger these days than Cheesecake Factory is fine dining. And yes, the fries are tragic.

As a burger goes, I'd eat it and know I'd enjoy it thanks to all the fresh salad served with the meat patties. Those fries though.. I cook fresh 'fries' (we here in the UK call them 'chips') all the time and the only time I've ever seen that cardboard texture is when I've had the misfortune to eat from a chain burger place. I always soak my cut chips in water to release the starch before rinsing, drying off and double frying to ensure they are fluffy on the inside and super crisp on the outside. But I appreciate that with such a huge daily turnover, with In N Out using fresh potatoes, that's not practical.

That was, hands down, the best review of In-n-Out I have ever watched. And I am in complete agreement. I live here in LA and I have never been excited about In-n-Out. Their burgers are ok. Fresh? For sure, but not stellar. And, no, I have never cared for their fries (when we get their burgers, we'll stop at McDonald's or Burger King for fries). It's strange because, on one hand, I "want" to love it, as it's a So Cal icon, but it's just ok.
The absolute best, best burger I have ever eaten was at a restaurant called Serratto, in Portland, Oregon. The beef was so beefy-tasting and it needed no ketchup or other condiments. Alas, I have never had anything that good, but it truly was an amazing burger (yes, really!).
Regarding fries, years ago, McDonald's used to have the best fries, as they fried them in beef tallow (fat) which gave them a crispy outside, but the inside was tender. Today, they fry them in vegetable oil which makes them mushier (blech!). Burger King's fries are good, although I don't know what they fry theirs in.

And Shake Shack burger is nothing compared to Ruth Chris steak burger. See how easy it is to compare something that cost double the price?

In and Out is great in the most mediocre way and I say this as someone that lives in California and has gone to in and out many, many, many times. It's never going to blow your socks off, I think a lot of people do it a real disservice over hyping it because outsiders that come in to try it are almost always disappointed because on it's best day, it's just a good tasting simple burger that's real claim to fame is it's clean and fresh and you almost never feel bloated afterwards or risk a random food poisoning, looking at you burger king... It's not the best burger, but it's priced great, always hits the spot, is consistent and just generally safe. I feel like a lot of fast foods you are literally at the mercy of each individual store, like you may have 3 kfcs in town, but one of them is absolute dog shit and one of them is safe and consistent, ect, where as in and out is pretty much great at every location because they all try to live up to a high standard and never feel like they are just coasting doing the bare minimal to get by. Their shakes are also great, the fries, I don't think they are nearly as bad as some people cry, but they are the weakest of the 3 main items.
I think Californians over praise it not to trick people, just most of us are well aware in the world of fast food, we are lucky to have them around because rather you go there a lot or once in awhile, it's always going to be good and not break the bank like some fast foods are trying to do now adays, mc donalds is on it's way to becoming a high end steak house with how expensive they have gotten these days. It's really something you can only appreciate if you live here or an area that has in and out and will understand why we rate it so highly and are so fond of it, but I think it's crazy to travel here just to try it like some people claim to do, I mean if your coming to California for other reasons, then yeah add it to the bucket list. I think people should temper their expectations tho and not expect a profound tasting burger, but just appreciate for it for being a clean, fresh, and simple well executed burger. Bonus points is since the employees are paid better and treated a lot better than most fast food places, disgruntled employees are not really an issue here. I can only imagine how much spit and gunk goes into food at some of the other fast food restaurants with lower standards and under poor management.

Sort of like East coasters hyping up shake shack and then it comes to the west coast and it basically taste subpar - five guys and shake shack are higher tier in price and they both taste pretty bad.

@@k-mark9187 Haven't tried shake shack yet, but man was I disappointed by five guys. All fast food is expensive these days, but five guys is insanely over priced and what made it worse was it wasn't that great. I mean it was good( I say good, but it was really just ok, kind of forced myself to think it was good after paying so much for such a subpar burger), but no where close to being anywhere good enough for it's price. Feel like five guys is a legit gimmick and meme place after eating there, no way people pay those prices to eat that poor quality of burger often, if you're going to charge that much the burger better blow my damn socks off.

The difference between In N Out Fries and Five Guys is they're not Double Fried....but if you're old enough and ate Fast Food pre 1985 they're more akin too fries you would get at County/State Fair....The Problem with nearly everyone who does a Review of In N Out is Not Eating the Damn Food While It's HOT

It maybe that most people are so used to pre-processed fries that the taste of actual fresh fried potatoes is so odd to them. Five Guys double fires their fries, and I love the cajun, but the regular flavor doesn't do it for me. I have Shake Shack about 4 times and don't find the price commensurate to the taste. I think as a burger goes, Five Guys tastes better than Shake Shack, but the closing of most of their store in Southern California shows that lots of people don't think the high prices aren't warranted. I did appreciate your POV!

Excellent review! Just to be clear In-N-Out is definitely not on the same tier in terms of quality as a Shake Shack or Five Guys (or Fatburger even!) A more apt comparison might be old school fast food burger places like McDonalds, Burger King, or Carl’s Jr. As you mentioned, In-N-Out hasn't really changed their formula in the last 70+ years.
With that being said, they do crush their competition in terms of price, quality, and endearing likeability imo.
