I had no idea that In-N-Out actually paid their employees decent wages w/ benefits. I always associate fast food with worker exploitation because usually only one employee (The restaurant GM) makes a living wage per location. That's really cool that In-N-Out takes care of their own. Every company should be this way.

That place had a profound effect on me, the values that In-N-Out instilled in me remain to this day. My first year, I remember getting a turkey at thanksgiving AND Chrismas AND a 20 hour paid vacation. I remember once getting two raises in one month, both only a nickel, but still, I got TWO in the SAME month! I remember my senior year, the yearbook took a picture of those of us that had part time jobs. We have an In-N-Out nearby and it is always busy, busy, busy. When you walk in the store it feels like you are in the 1950's. The staff (regardless of age) are extremely polite but not like robots. I think they are also careful about where they open up their stores because they seem to only have highly desirable employees that seem to have a great work ethic even though many of them are very young. That isn't so easy to find anymore so they have stores where they rely on young people with good ethics. The food is always phenomenal and you can eat off the floor. Top that off with great pricing and you have the best "fast food" restaurant on the planet.

The thing I love about the In-N-Out model is it breaks the modern "rulebook" for running a company. You have a very simple menu, limited locations, low prices, and pay your staff well which is the opposite of the big guys. That said though when you go you know what to expect and you are not swamped with the insane amount of options most places have. Only to find out they are out of this and the ice cream machine is busted, again 😉.
The other thing that always amazed me was despite how busy the average location is, and trust me there is rarely a "slow" time, they still manage to get you through in an impressively fast time considering that making a burger and fries takes a fixed amount of time.
Overall I think there is a lot to be learned from their business model and I wish more companies followed suit. I do believe since the company is privately held, it gives them the ability to make the choices they do, without bowing down to shareholders who will generally not share the same values as the owners do. Sure offering 401K/insurance/high pay is costly, but with all the training they give their staff it pays off with the high retention rate which is rare in the fast-food industry.

I tried in n out several times in Arizona and California, and honestly I was a bit disappointed. It was a great burger, good service, much better than McDonald’s or Burger King (obviously a low bar, however). But, it was incredibly over-hyped. Everyone told me it would be amazing, the best burger I’d ever have, and just so many times better than other fast food. I just found it... pretty good, but nowhere near somewhere like Five Guys. I try not to have an East Coast bus here, I just think the burgers and fries are so so superior at Five Guys, or at somewhere like Cook Out. I’d eat at In-n-Out again, but it was definitely not what I was expecting.

In N Out is an excellent example of horizontal integration rather than often used vertical integration model. This gives ultimate control of all aspects and quality. Lastly, no shareholders to please at the cost of quality and low end employees.

Yes, there is a myth about how money can be dispersed. Capitalism works, its the pyramid scheme that kills it. I have said all along we don't need that model we need a trapezoid model of capitalism., a greater chance of making it to another level and disbursement of wealth while that is happening. The greed factor is a DC promoted attribute to keep people poor and despondent, not to mention ignorant. The greatest step in American freedom are those starter jobs that teach us the value of hard work. This company demonstrates that instead of oppressing the worker like the rest.

As a West Virginian, we have few local restaurant chains that are awesome (looking at you, Tudor’s Biscuit World), but I’ve always said that if we could just get a Popeye’s, a White Castle, and an In-N-Out, I’d be perfectly happy with our cheap food situation. I also LOVE that they take care of their workers, and it shows in their friendliness, accuracy, and willingness to do a good job. Happy workers=quality product, everyone should take a lesson from them and Costco.

I work for In N Out and you actually got the responsibilities of each level wrong. Level 1 would be Counter Orders, Host/Host Assisting, and Counter handout. Level 2 is Pay window, handheld orders, and all the previous ones mentioned before. Level 3 is Drive Orders/handout, and everything from before. Level 4 is Fries, and Dicer/Loader. Level 5 is Board (AKA salad table), you can also start to experience some responsibilities in store operation at this level. Level 6 is Cook, more responsibilities are given at this level such as safety evaluations and store walk arounds. And Level 7 is the beginning of the management ladder where you can be trusted to lead basic operations in the store.

There is an In-N-Out in my town, and I've legitimately seen tourists taking pictures in front of the sign in front of the restaurant. Or in front of the iconic crossed palm trees. You can say this or that restaurant is better, but I've never seen anything like that in front of any other place. Say what you will of In-N-Out, it's still a decent place to grab a bite, prices are really reasonable, and the employees don't look miserable. They are a pretty good company and treat their employees like human beings. Also, it makes way more sense economically speaking to retain employees, rather than just cycling through new ones that you have to pay to train over and over again because no one wants to stay in a stressful environment for little pay. In-N-Out knows what's up.

Charlie Terrell For super cheap its near the top tier. But that’s only for the absolute cheapest burger and fries. It’s really hard to say because not many chains are like them. It would be like eating at the original McDonald’s, if you ever watch the movie “The Founder” it’s identical to what McDonald’s was in the 1950’s. Burger is good but cheap. Fries are not very good at all and their cheese fries are made with literally two kraft singles melted on top. Milkshakes are quite good tho. If I were you and you really have to try it, go to Texas, so you can get Whattaburger too. I think it’s fair to say that In-N-Out is like the original McDonald’s and Whattaburger is a much better version of Hardee’s/Carl Jr’s. Don’t go with the high expectations that I did, you’ll surely be disappointed.

I tried In-N-Out for the first time in Colorado and I was fairly impressed. The burger was subtly flavorful and went down well, the prices were surprisingly good, and the service was pleasant. I hope they open a location in Florida because I would choose In-N-Out over BurgerFi, Five Guys, Shake Shack, Habit Burger, Fuddruckers, and the rest of the fast food giants

Another factor to consider is that the Burgers are sold at cost. The profit is in the fires and drinks. That is one of the reasons why the menu changed to allow for combos. It automatically adds the fries and drink to the order. That was not the case in 1990 when I worked there. Always had to ask if you would like fries with that burger.

i’ve worked at in n out for two years let me correct their leveling .
    level 1- basic counter orders
    level 2- backpay tendering/handheld orders
    level 3- drive through operation
    level 4- fries
    level 5- burger assembly
    level 6- cook
level 7- able to run shifts when managers aren’t around , manager training
then you have usually 4-5 managers.
Also managers don’t make 170,000+ , those are only for the much busier in n out stores . There’s a lot of goals , requirements , improvements , etc managers have yearly to get those bonuses.
