Basically all you're doing well. You can do it another way which is put the paint on and then you take it off by means of a scraper or sanding block. Or what have you piece of wood? You know before it's completely dry and you'll get roughly the same look that particular look is called a distressed look and it can be done to liking there's kits that help you out with that if you need them. But it's basically just removing some of the paint that is on there by whatever means necessary. The less paint up you have on it the more distressed it looks

I would recommend that you remove your rings or wear gloves. Some cleaners can be damaging to natural stones etc.
